The last two weeks - post revision
Orchids&Dragons replied to affy304's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The gas that causes pain after surgery is not in your intestines (where Gas-X can get to it). It is the gas they use to inflate your abdomen during surgery to give them room to work. That gas gets trapped in your tissues and muscles and has to work it's way out of your body. It tends to rise which is why the pain can be so severe in your shoulders, upper back and neck. As to the original post, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I did not experience anything similar with my revision. -
I had the Lap Band in 2005. While I lost about 80% of my excess weight, my life with the band was very miserable. I had horrible reflux and later found out that I had been living with a slipped band for years. I had gastric sleeve April of last year and am very happy with my decision. No significant complications and I feel great! One thing: when I had my sleeve done, my surgeon said that the procedure took him at least an extra half hour while he sorted through the scar tissue from the band. From what I've read on this form, that is quite common when you see revision from lap band. For me, all that scar tissue and extra work to deal with it made my initial recovery a little different. I saw others talking about feeling great and being up walking right away. I felt like I had been hit by a Mac Truck! I couldn't tolerate the laps around the nurse's station and was lucky to make it about 20 feet down the hall. I stayed an extra night in the hospital and was a little more on track by day 2.

I’m 10 days away from bypass but at some point in the future would like to have some wine. What type of alcohol did you have?

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Balloon
New&Improved replied to cam128's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
VSG is a very good procedure 1000s of people have lost weight and kept it off. One guy I know lost 200lbs over 2 years and doing well. It is technically the least restrictive out of all but still good enough for what you need as long as your follow surgeons advice to the letter. Pcp is NOT a bariatric doctor! And IF sleeve ends up Not doing enough it can easily be converted to bypass or DS (Being 5ft2 your ideal weight is like 120?) -
The last two weeks - post revision
Losingit2018 replied to affy304's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not yet had my revision so really can’t give any advice. I am wondering though. Was all of this caused by dehydration? Were you getting all of your required fluids in? Thanks for sharing your story. Hopefully someone else will chime in and be able to answer your questions for you. -
So let me give you a run down of my last two weeks........ I’m definitely not looking for sympathy, I just want to know if any of you have been through this so I’m not going through it alone. I had my revision from VSG to RNY on 7/22 - Day 1 was rough but after that everything was a breeze. I had tapered myself off pain meds and felt great. Sunday morning (6 days post op) I felt pretty dizzy and light headed which I linked to dehydration so I stepped up my liquids. This lasted on and off all day. Come Monday morning and I’m starting to have some left side stomach pain and linked shoulder pain. I’m not gonna lie, the shoulder pain hurt worse than anything imaginable and I tried simethicone and nothing helped so it was not linked to gas. I called my surgeon and he suggested to come into the ER for eval. CT scan and blood work later, I was getting admitted. Let me tell you what though - I have not felt the same since they stretched me flat on the CT scan, it felt like every fiber that had started to form back together was ripped open again. I was admitted to the hospital for 3 nights for severe dehydration and to fully rule out a leak, which was definite after an Upper GI. During the first 2 days of admission my surgeon allowed me nothing by mouth and near the end of that I could just feel my stomach going crazy inside my abdomen looking for substance. When I was finally able to eat, my stomach hated me. The first thing that hit my stomach caused unbelievable cramps. A day later and I can still feel fluids hit my pouch and cramps follow. My pain in my shoulder has gone away, I’m still pretty sore in my stomach but for the life of my can’t figure out why my stomach is so mad at me for drinking. Has anyone of you experienced this? If so, PLEASE reassure me that things do get better 🙏🏻

I’m just over a year out from bypass and generally have had smooth sailing. However, today I had a Cobb salad for lunch. Not 45 mins later I was running (hobbling) to the restroom, sweating, groaning, clenching my cheeks and praying I’d make it (I did, I’m such a big girl) A few hours after that, my blood sugar tanked and I was shaking, heart racing, dizzy, etc. The only thing I can think is maybe the dressing had loads of sugar/fat in it that I’m not used to. Regardless, it was a gentle (ahem) reminder that my insides still make the rules. If you need me, I’ll be drinking about 60 more Oz of water. What a day...

Eating AFTER gallbladder removal- Tips? Experiences?
FluffySaysForkIt! posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Hey, y'all So, I am set to get my gallbladder out shortly due to many stones and sludge. (Yippee...) Being 8 weeks out from my bypass surgery, I am just starting to really feel like I am getting a good handle on this new way of eating/ planning food as it is right now. For those of you who have had your gallbladders removed, what changes did you notice/ need to make in eating? Did those changes, if any, resolve over time? Any tips or tricks? Thanks in advance for sharing! -
Wow, I'm not hapf as interesting as you guys!! 1. Personal goal this month is first to learn what i can/cant do post surgery, also figure out how I'm going to go New Orleans for my birthday without indulging! 2. Surgery type - 1 week post surgery - Gastric bypass Revision to Partial Duodenal Switch (no shrinkage of stomach), 3. Weight and BMI - i have my 1 week post op appointment tomorrow so will know my weight then 4. Fun fact - Well apart from me turning 50 on 8/31, so looking forward to it! I guess, I'm a Candy crush fanatic and am currently at level 5405... I was also a gifted student when i was younger, not sure what happened 😁 but in 1988, i won the Y.T.S (Young Training Scheme) award for all of London and was given an award by the Lord Mayor of London and had to make a speech. At the time The Bank of Nova Scotia was a Sponsor, they asked me to come work for them, i started the following Monday and spent the next 18 years working for them, the best years of my life 😊😊

MEN 300-350 LBS WEIGHT LOSS
Thomas Epting replied to New&Improved's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hello, I started at 338lbs in September of ‘18 and had gastric sleeve completed on Dec 27th of ‘18. I’m currently 193.6lbs and am shooting to reach my Ideal BMI weight of 160. The ideal weight is just a target and my surgeon and nutritionist are closely monitoring my weight and blood levels and have told me repeatedly they will stop me if I need to stop prior to that. I know you stated you are planning bypass, that is what my surgeon wanted me to have, however, I had previous abdominal surgeries from a appendix that ruptured and the bypass wasn’t an option. The surgery, the “pain”, the pre-op diet....EVERYTHING WAS WORTH IT! I was down around 50lbs at surgery and have been steadily loosing weight since then. Some months more than others. Everyone sees the change in themselves a little differently in my opinion. I sometimes still see the Big Me, so I weigh myself every day. It’s my reassurance and my accountability to myself and my family. I will tell you, I lost weight faster from month 1-4 than from 5 to current. But if I track my food, make good eating decisions (forever), I will reach my goal weight. I will not be in the statistic that only looses a portion of the excess or even regains. If there’s ever anything I can answer, I’d be happy to give you my opinion based on my experience. You can message me in my inbox. Regards -
1. Personal Goal: imma hit onderland if it kills me! 2. Surgery: MGB (Oct 18), still losing 3. CW: 93.6 kg (206 lbs), 33.6 BMI (pre-lapband 153.5kg, pre-MGB revision 135.5kg) 4. Fun fact: it won't mean anything to peeps outside Oz, but keeping on with famous ppl theme, my daughter is besties with the daughter of Waleed Aly and Sudan Cartland and Wal's brother was my surgeon for my original lapband. (Keeping it in the fam 😂)

❤My Revision Story❤
WOLVESFAN1 replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Congratulations on your successful revision! I'm in the situation that you were in I had the Lap Band in 2005 and due to throwing up, it was removed several months later. In 2006 I went to Mexico and had the Gastric Sleeve. I have lost over 100 pounds and I've kept it off. My problem started almost 2 years ago. I started throwing up undigested food. I went to a US surgeon and was told I had a large hernia and it was causing a large portion of my stomach to push into my chest cavity. Long story short, the hernia was repaired and the doctor thought that would correct the reflux. Well it hasn't. After having more test ran he has determined that I now have spontaneous reflux. I'm actually dropping more weight due to the spontaneous reflux. My doctor said that usually if you have problems throwing up with the lap band, you will with the sleeve. He said my sleeve has some angulation. He has recommended the conversion to an RNY in order to sustain life. Unfortunately, my insurance is not wanting to cover. I will be eligible for Medicare in December and will limp along until then. Medicare will cover the revision. Thanks for your updates on your revision. I'm extremely nervous about having the RNY, but have no choice. BTW, you look awesome in your pictures. Keep up the great work! -
I’m starting my journey in getting the bypass. I have 6 months to get all my requirements done. That’s no problem. I’m just having a hard time opening up to my family about this. Anyone have advice in how to talk about what I’m doing?

Hi! What questions did you have about your surgery?
mlmx1138 replied to mlmx1138's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good questions, thank you! It's good to see someone my age (not that we're OLD or anything) have success with this. My niece had a successful gastric bypass but she is 20 years younger than me. Still, I am looking forward with hope so that I can start a new life! -

Thank you! This is what I am hoping for, remission of diabetes. This happened for my niece who had a gastric bypass and she is doing great. I know it would change my life if I lost alot of weight but I need help, so I hope my insurance approves! And congrats on your 73! -
Waiting, waiting, waiting
SeattleLady replied to TX2NC's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yep, I understand the waiting part plus a fighting component! I am on the first day of the fifth round for this revision. I might have to go through abratration in away. The hardest part? Why do I have insurance if it doesn't pay for what is necessary? It should be "optional" for me to have a higher quality of life? I don't think so! Thanks 💜 that's why i decided to try and share my experience. I don't think I've seen many people needing a revision without hoping to lose more weight. When I was looking through threads it was usually a mix of GERD/substantial regain but that could be because they are the most vocal. I can only think of 3 people needing revision while already at goal 😳
-
Well, I think you are doing something pretty awesome. Cuz others will be able to look at what you've done and be helped by it. Cuz all the time we read here about people needing a revision but are afraid to do it for fear of losing more weight! The struggle to maintain is real! ((hugs))
