    May 2022 surgery?

My 1 week liquid diet starts 4/29! Very close to yours. Can’t wait.
  2. In 1 month, it will have been a year since my surgery. I have gone from 286 lbs to 168 lbs. I like how I look and I feel better in some ways. However, my energy level has not improved much and I am still soooo tired. Also my pain issues have actually worsened and I cant go a day without sucking childrens liquid ibuprofen straight from the bottle! But I was hanging in there and doing ok. But for the past 2-3 weeks, I constantly belch and feel icky for 15-30 minutes after eating. Any ideas as to what may be going on? Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

    Pre surgery pre weight loss

Has your surgeon had you work with a dietician yet? My dietician was WONDERFUL. She worked with me on discussing my personal food preferences and established goals. I've almost lost 50 lbs and haven't started the liquid preop yet. I'm on a very high protein, low fat, low carb diet. Lots of baked fish, chicken, and green veggies. Also supplementing protein shakes to get to my protein goals for the day. I found the first week was the hardest. But the carb cravings stop.
  5. I was able to sit up and be pretty much normal by the 3rd day but as others have noted, everybody is different. The pain I felt throughout the week was mostly incision pains which would've been doable for a 4 hour flight. The long walks at the airport though is something I would hesitate to do but then again the next morning after my surgery when I went home I had to walk a long way to get to our car (huge hospital and parking lot), and I was okay. Good luck and congrats to your upcoming surgery.

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

I’m 17 months out my starting weight was 245 and now I’m at 155 and this past week I lost 5 pounds I’m drinking water now a lot . I’m a caregiver and I sit with people in there home . So I do take tuna for lunch with ritz crackers any suggestions I need then I do take a small orange and I do drink 2 shake a day to get my protein in . I’m planning to get skin surgery in 6 months
  7. Hi Marianne hope you're well, I might be postponed due to a iron infusion, we'll find out on Tuesday as I had it done on the 14th and I was told it that iron-transfer does not settle before 4 weeks even if there's a blood test it won't give accurate results, the surgery is due soon the results wont be accurate to get the all clear I'm assuming. So it's really up to the hospital to decide what the decision will be with this situation they may postpone they may not I'm just waiting for Tuesday to call them find out but will definitely keep you posted.

    Help with protein

I love tofu! I wasn't sure if it was alright during puree as it's listed on soft food on most things but if others have tolerated at 2.5 weeks I probably will. I've tolerated everything I've tried so far (limited as it may be) I do have PB powder from Naked Nutrition. It's a little grainy never blends to smooth but that's ok cause my brain interrupts it as like crunch PB in a drink lol
  9. Day 3 y’all! My surgeon and nutritionist have both told me I should be feeling better daily and I’m so blessed in my case this is true. No throwing up today everything is staying down! My water intake is better and I’m currently having some strained cream of chicken soup that I thinned down with my water to make it easier on my tum! Today I’m focused on trying for more protein the thick premier proteins Im waiting for the 1 week mark to try again but I have found these alternatives! V8 has little baby cans that have 10g of protein I found at Walmart and also Gatorade has sugar free with 10g of protein. I also heard of this brand called BiPro that carried protein water that has 20g of protein! Premier protein also has a clear liquid drink that’s high in protein but very sweet, I’m hoping to have some success today with protein intake and get some more walking in! How is everyone else? Anyone want some reviews on the two drinks I’m picking up today? Lots of love ❤️
  10. I had Dr. Mun at the South Bay Kaiser location. I know some doctors outside of Kaiser don’t require weight loss, but I’m pretty sure all doctors within Kaiser require it. They want to make sure you’re serious, and they want your liver to shrink down enough to do the surgery. I was not thrilled about doing the weight loss before the surgery, but share your concerns with your care team. They are there to help. The Options class does everything online, but they keep your weight confidential. They will not disclose your weight to other members in the class. I think I only had to submit my starting weight, then progress weigh-in on week 5, then final weight on week 10. Hope this helps! Doing this with Kaiser is a journey. There are a lot of hoops to jump through, but I’m really grateful that they made me do these things before the surgery.

    Help with protein

Have you tried different types of protein? There is one powder made from eggs instead of whey protein. I had vomiting for weeks. I wasn’t able to get enough protein all that time, and I survived, so hang in there and hopefully it will get better.

    Laxatives

Constipation is very common. But the dosage you’re having all sounds too extreme & are suffering as a result. ☹️ It may take a little while for your body to actually get back into some sort of routine after this & also to have anything to excrete. You’ve basically cleaned yourself out. I took benefibre every day & only a single stool softener when needed. Usually after three days of no movement to keep on top of it like @catwoman7. It wasn’t an every week thing. I also had rolled oats most morning from purée stage - good fibre. You’re not consuming much to begin so your movements tend to be small & you may not go every day until you are eating a greater volume of food each day.

    Help with protein

Hello [emoji847] You are doing amazingly, well done! I am in the exact same position as you, I hate protein drinks of any kind with a passion. My surgeon told me not to panic over protein in the first few weeks, he said recovering and fluids are more important initially. I have followed his advice and haven't lost any muscle so far and I'm three weeks out. I drink glasses of cold milk with a scoop of skimmed powdered milk mixed in to add extra protein. I also add a tea spoon or two of it to my yogurts. I have mixed low fat dairylea cheese with mash and thin sliced ham. Mug of hot milk and coffee (although some say no coffee), cooked chicken in a casserole with carrots, onions, parsnips, sweet potato, butternut squash and lots of peas and a few lentils for extra protein. This was cooked in a pot in the oven, or it could go in a slow cooker, and cooked until the vegetables were extremely soft. Easy to eat, a tonne of nutrients and vitamins and plenty of protein all in one meal. I also don't mind eating low fat cottage cheese in various flavours. Hope this help you [emoji3059] Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. The first week sucked for me as well. It’s rough there’s no doubt about that! My tummy dislikes anything cold, I couldn’t deal with a popsicle! I’m starting to feel more myself now, it’s one week tomorrow. Hang in there, each day is a bit better than the one before 😄

    Help with protein

I would suggest you eat it with a spoon. You're two weeks post op. It's too soon for veggies, chips and crackers aren't a good idea nutrition wise and I doubt they're on your approved foods list.
  17. Ok, so excited. You tend not to "be noticed" at my age. In the last week, several compliments from the opposite sex. Great mood boost!

    Slow Losers Club…..officially *sigh*

Yup, slow loser right here too or at least I do count myself one. 210 surgery date weight 1st month - 18 pounds 2nd month - 10 pounds 3rd month (Feb) - 7.6 pounds 4th month - about 12 pounds And in my 5th month now: Half way through and only have lost about 3 pounds 😂 (I have stalled for more than a week now). Let's see how this month ends. So yeh, more or less I do think I am slow loser with stalls here and there. And yes it does get to you but seeing many others talk about it, I am being hopeful that I'll eventually get there.

    Cutting hair pre-op

Hi redhead_che, I am a recent band to bypass conversion. I think I may know a little about how you are feeling. With the band, I felt more comfortable having long hair when anticipating hair loss/thinning. This time, I decided to cut 17 inches of my hair about a week or so before my 4/5/22 surgery, which I plan to donate to a cancer non-profit. I am still early in my present journey and so I have not had to endure any hair loss/thinning yet, but I can attest that personally it has made showering and washing my hair a lot easier during my recovery. Also, importantly, my hair is definitely still growing despite a very low-calorie intake for the past four weeks, and I can gather my hair back in a band again. For me, a ponytail is very helpful for covering hair loss/thinning. I have no regrets at all. For what it is worth, I think you should do whatever makes you happy and comfortable.

    Help with protein

Hello all. I am two weeks post op. My surgeon combines the full liquid and puree stage. He said at week 3 I can start soft foods. I love yogurt now. I found a no sugar added 25g protein yogurt. I eat half for breakfast with my meds and chewable vitamin since it had iron and iron on a stomach with no food will make you nauseated. So there's 25g of protein. I drink enough water cause I loooove water so that's not an issue. The Issue is I am not hitting the protein req. I've never liked Protein shakes, they've always tastes bad. Since the surgery though Protein shakes make me nauseated just thinking about one. I tried today to force one down. Three sips in I was on the verge of vomiting and 10 minutes later was dry heaving. The thought of the shakes make me almost vomit. Idk what to do here. Even protein powders have the same effect. I tried the protein soups too same effect. I don't think my body tolerates that kind of protein. What do I eat? I tried a scrambled egg (pureed even further) it went down ok but I don't really like eggs and they're only 6g of protein. Also I still can't eat much at a time. I think I max out at 3 oz of yogurt. I've been subsisting on yogurt mainly. I tried tuna as well (made a tuna salad) tolerated that like a champ. Issue with canned tuna is you WILL get mercury poisoning from it. Three cans in a week can cause mercury poisoning. I got some expensive canned tuna that SAYS it's been mercury tested to be within 0.1 part per million and a can is 40g of protein. Since they want you to not drink water 30 before or after eating I'm also thirsty. I always want to drink water. I always have this is not new post op, I've always been this way. It's like torture not drinking water. So mainly I'm asking what can I eat to help with protein? Any tips on helping with the water issue? I just don't know what to do. I'm tired of being nauseated all the time.
  21. Day 2 of post op! I’m kinda turning this into a little self journal for myself but also putting it out their to others in case anyone is experiencing the same thing, I think it’s nice not feeling so alone. Soooo starting Day 2 I’ve been yaking that bright yellow fluid and also kinda dark brown I’m assuming this is bile and stomach acid from the horrible after taste I’m getting. The oxycodone is helping with that abdominal pain big time and the melt in your mouth Zofran. water is still really hard to keep down and I could barely finish a popsicle!! Going from having like 2 or 3 as a sweet treat to not even half of one was mind blowing to me! I’m mustering the courage to try more water and some protein liquid today I have now a fear of throwing up just because it’s very painful. Keep hanging on my first week peeps it sucks now but the results are so worth it! Lots of ❤️
  22. I am in the minority in that I despise Fairlife shakes. There's a taste in there that I cannot identify and my brain won't let me swallow it. One tip I have is do NOT buy a ton of ANYTHING because you think you'll want it after surgery. I lived on bone broth with cayenne and fresh-squeezed lemon for my pre-op diet (2 weeks). I had several boxes of it left over after the surgery and the mere *thought* of it post-surgery truly made me gag. Luckily for me, my neighbors are big cooks and happily accepted my offer of the bone broth. The protein shake that I've loved for years is made by Click. They're coffee-flavored. I know that they used to have a decaf version, but I can't seem to find it on their site now. You can have it hot or cold, even blended with ice to make a shake. You can mix it with water or milk, but the slight saltiness of coconut water as the liquid is suberb. They offer a 3-pack sampler with free shipping. NO, I have nothing to do with the company - I'm just a fan.
  23. Good Morning -I have been reading all of the questions and answers and a lot of them helped, first time posting cause I need some help. Four weeks post-op, down 39 lbs. The constipation hit me. About 8 hours running back and forth one night, finally passed at 1:15 in morning. Now in lots of pain. Phoned my doctor, they have me on 2 pills twice a day, stool softener, 1 dose Miralax and one dose Milk of Magnesia. Now I can't stay out of bathroom. I think this is too much laxatives. What is everyone on daily that helps stay regular. Sorry for the TMI.
  24. I felt same way, but after my 6 week recovery I decided I was going to live with my choices. As long as I’m eating right and exercising and moving throughout the day, I will have a little piece of that cake.(not everyday) I’m post op 3 months now and down 60lbs.

    Not losing weight

You're in a stall. And your weight loss is in normal range because you started at a lower weight. You lost 10% of your body weight in two months. I lost 11% of my body weight in the first two months. Very similar. You're on track. Pounds wise, yes, I lost more, but I also started well over 300 pounds. Try not to stress as your weight loss is on track. Though yes, stalls are frustrating. I had many, many, many, many stalls in my journey. Several even that went in the 40 day range (which is way beyond the norm which is usually 3 weeks) so I fully understand how disheartening they are. Just keep on track and it'll break in time. The stalls are generally just your body trying to readjust itself.
