    Heparin shots at home

I had surgery on Dec. 18,2012 home on 12/20 and had to do shots for 10 days, needle is small kind of painless better safe than sorry. Good Luck!!!
  2. Tomorrow is the big day for me! I am feeling super nervous today. I feel the butterflies flying around in my soon to be smaller stomach. I can't wait for it to be over! I have lost 9 lbs on the liquid diet. My goal was 10. I am pretty short, so I am okay with 9. Heading to the store soon to pick up a new robe!
  3. I was banded on the 14th of this month and I had a little freak out myself right before. To make matters worse I developed an abscessed tooth 4 days before the surgery, then developed intractable vomiting 3 days before from a reaction to a medication prescribed by my dentist. I was really scared for my health and afraid that the surgeon would cancel the surgery. He didn't, thank goodness, but my stress level was about a 20 on a 1-10 scale before I went in. I really think the wait in pre-op was the hardest. The anticipation and nervousness just feel like they are going to overwhelm you. Once I was wheeled back to the OR everything went super fast. I got onto the operating table, everyone was super nice, and the anesthesiologist put the mask over my face. He said "take some deep breaths for me" and literally after two deep inhales I was out. Woke up later in PACU groggy, nauseous, and in pain. The PACU nurse was very diligent though and got me medicated pretty quick and everything got a lot better. I ended up having to stay overnight because the anesthesia didn't clear my system fast enough. I was loopy and hallucinating almost all of the first night. Dilaudid and Zofran were my bestest friends that first night, lol. The only time I felt true pain was anytime I used my stomach muscles to shift, or sit up, etc. You don't realize how often you flex your abdominals, but it became obvious then. Kind of felt like a combination of WAY too many crunches and a pulling sensation. The worst thing for me was the first pee after having the indwelling urinary catheter removed. My god. Felt like peeing little serrated knives. Second and thrid times werent as bad, though. Adapting at home has been a journey in itself. I couldn't tolerate anything more than an ounce on my stomach at a time. I lost 9 pounds in 3 days. I made the mistake of trying to get out and go grocery shopping on one of these bad days. Almost passed out in Publix. I also wanted to hurry up and start eating solids but knew I couldn't stress my stomach. Now that I am on pureed it has been a challenge to find the happy medium between satiated and overstuffed. I'm either still hungry or about to burst. And hungry every hour or so. I am looking forward to a fill so I can feel the satisfied fullness earlier. Even still, I do not regret having this done. Those first few days were full of discomfort, but the body adapts pretty quick and I was even able to sleep on my side/stomach by about day 4/5. Jitters and nerves are normal. This is SURGERY for god's sake. I'm a nurse and even I was scared going in. What you are feeling is very normal. We are all rooting for you and know you will do great! PS: I cannot stress enough finding a good small pillow for bracing your abdomen for coughing afterwards. I could have forgone everything else but my little pillow I brought from home.

    nausea

I'm 10 days post op. band removal and sleeve. rough couple of days. 2 days in hospital. no vomiting but lots of heartburn/nausea. hard to tell if hunger pains or nausea. salty foods go down better loving tomato soup. on pureed diet. Breakfast is worst, as I luv my coffee. taking Prilosec 20 30 minutes before breakfast. didn't work today,lightheaded/nausea. greek yogurt goes down ok and dry chicken soup mix. I am very sick of the Protein drinks but know that is a guaranteed protein.

thanks, sorry to say it doesn't get better, but time goes fast. slim fast chocolate or coffee I liked the best but premier had to most Protein. you should drop about 10 lbs pre-op
  6. Hi there! Had my surgery 10/6, the few days were rough. I did not any pain mediation home. I'm feeling great but sure do miss coffee with sugar. My biggest challenge is drinking enough water. It's difficult to drink every 15 minutes. Anyone interested in being part of buddy support group that meets via zoom or Fbook? Stay the course, follow the plan and take Vitamins!!

    Daily Diary 2/11/15

I went out to restaurants pre op with the fam - we were visiting the inlaws at the time - and it was hard as h*!!. Also had several sessions of M&M poker and rum - we always use M&Ms as chips (and the rum is for, well, getting toasted) - and that was hard too. But I brought had my blasted Protein shakes and told myself it wasn't going to be forever and these were special occasions for the rest of the fam. Its a lot less hard post op because you're just not hungry in the same way - and eventually you get to eat food. On the other hand, my husband has done all the cooking - and he cooks like a 10 year old (read spaghetti every night) - for the last month because we all agreed it would be cruel and unusual punishment to have to cook for them and not eat EVERY day. Now that I'm in soft foods I'm back to cooking some. You're pulled both ways. I think I'd probably go for the wife's birthday and eat the spinach but see if you can come to agreement that this is the only one until you're certain of yourself.

    Pissing off my boss

LOL. I loved working bedside as a nurse, but I have to say that the management to nurse relationship sucks rotten eggs. I was a mid-life career changer to nursing, from I.T. and I have never had the levels of disrespect in any other industry that I had as a nurse. I gave my supervisor and the scheduling person 6 months' notice of my wedding. I needed three shifts off, and had the PTO built up. We only got our shift schedules about 10 days before the start of the next schedule, and that's when I found out they only gave me 1/2 of one shift off, and it wasn't even on my wedding day. I had 4 out of town guests in my own home before the wedding, and a dozen people coming from out of town. I'd already re-scheduled it due to scheduling conflicts as well as not being able to get off for it several months before. I worked in the ER. Came in one night with what I thought was just allergies, but by a couple of hours into my shift, it was clear it was actually pinkeye. Was told they didn't have anyone to cover, and I had to finish my shift. WITH PINKEYE IN AN ER. Short staffed for a shift? Does management come in to cover? Nope, they just add more patients to the nurses' loads. I worked in one ER where I carried TWICE the recommended load for patients, and they didn't adjust for when I had super sick patients for the entire shift because the ICU was in overflow. That same ER when I hired on told me I was to work weekend shifts 1 out of 3 weekends. Then they proceeded to schedule me 5 weekends out of 6, and told me to suck it up. And I had it much better than floor nurses. Hug your nurses, they need it.

    PostOp Lifting?

I was told nothing over 10# for 6 weeks.
  12. oh heck yes, I had bought an all natural organic 100% pure jar of peanut butter right before I decided surgery. I had learned the trick to pour all the oil off the top to lower fat a lot, and I did. For the last week or so, I've had a small spoon of peanut butter almost every day, teaspoon at most. Its so unbelievably thick from the fridge that it takes almost 10 minutes to slowly eat a spoonful. I enjoy every second of it. Besides that, the only other cheats I did were on day 1 of my all shakes, then all easily edible food was removed from the house or thrown in the garbage. Down 20lbs in 3 weeks so I don't exactly feel bad about it (well secretly I feel a little bad..)

    Sodas

Some folks drink soda some don't or can't. With all things you need to judge for yourself are those calories worth it (if drinking non-diet soda?) I had a sip of soda about 6 months post op, it tasted horrible and the carbonation made me bloated and feel horrible. I couldn't eat my normal meal when the time came, so for me sodas are out. I am 10 months out now and just steer clear of soda and beer they just have too much carbonation for me. If I do have a soda maybe a few sips to half of one every 3 months it is almost flat or flat. To me the flavor that I liked is not the same as I remember so it just isn't worth it. The "negative reinforcement" of the discomfort and horrible taste just has me craving it less and less. Pre-surgery I would have cringed at the thought of no soda ever, now the only problem is when we go out the non-carbonated low calorie options are few and far between.

    Is this a real stall?

Probably could be a stall. My last stall was when my BMI was about 33ish (last month, my month 5). Lasted 3 weeks or so until scale started moving yet again this month, month 6. Since you're month 10, I am sure weight loss slows down too closer to a year of surgery. Like the above poster suggested, try play around with calories and exercises and see if it makes a difference. It can get frustrating when you still haven't come close to the goal but hang in there and hope scale starts cranking again.

    Brand new here

Hi there and welcome! As you research more and more your choice should become very clear for you. There are tons of threads on both of these surgeries and both can help you meet your goal. I chose bypass in the end mostly because I suffered from severe reflux and type 2 diabetes. Bypass has a proven record in curing these diseases and getting to better health was most important to me. By the way, I have never had a single episode of heartburn or reflux and my diabetes is completely gone! I have lost 135lbs and have 10 to go to hit an ideal weight. 1 pound to go to no longer be overweight. I do not get dumping syndrome at all although on occasion if I eat too much sugar at one time I do get a tummy ache. Also I cannot eat eggs, those make me sick. Other than that I have no complications whatsoever. Having bypass was the best thing I have ever done for myself. Good luck and feel free to reach out with questions!
  16. I was banded on 6/13 and weighed in at 216... I have been on full liq/mushies, with restriction and only 700 calorie a day intake and my weight hasn't changed.. I am kinda freaking... My doctor said its normal, but someone please reassure me!!!

    Treadmill Reviews

I have a used precor c954 model @ home for a couple years now. Actually, I got it a couple years before surgery (July 2012), but did not really start using it until post op month 5 for running (lost about 100 lbs first). It is commercial quality and has been super solid. Literally. The thing is built like a tank. It also is made almost 15 years ago. We bought it used off Craig's list for about 1000. I have put in many different types of runs on it from long (20 miles) to race length (5k and 10 k) to HIIT to sprinting. It has only a few programs, but I don"t need more. I can make it do anything by setting speed and ramp at any time. I do not need built in TV, DVD, mp3, etc. I have a wall mounted tv hooked up to cable with wall mounted Bose speakers. I have an iPod with Bluetooth headphones for music while running. Go with precor if you can as they make quality equipment. Personally, I run outside more today than on the treadmill, but did spend a lot of time on it for about 6 months. Be sure to invest with good quality running shoes if you will be running on it as opposed to walking on it. The right pair of running shoes make a huge difference, no matter what treadmill you end up buying.

    Kidney stones...

I went into the ER yesterday with extreme pain. So much that I was throwing up every 10-15 minutes. It was sudden on-set. I had no symptoms before yesterday. The ER doc ordered a CAT scan, and there was a 1.3 cm stone in my kidney. The pain was being caused by the stone blocking the tube from the kidney to the bladder. They said there is no chance of this stone leaving without assistance because it is so big. They've managed the pain, and I'm waiting to see a urologist who can take care of the stone. I also have a call into my weight management office to see if I need to come in to adjust my consumption. I've been trying so hard to follow the rules. I'm disappointed that I have to deal with this. My RnY surgery was August 28, 2014, and I've lost 105 lbs to date.
  19. Hi all! I am new to this site and am having the VSG on July 30th (in 10 days!) .. I am currently on day 5 of my liquid Protein diet. my doctor wants me to have 5 shakes a day. in addition I can have sugar free Jell-O, sugar free popsicles, crystal light and other sugar free drinks. that's pretty much it, no food at all. the first couple of days were really tough but I got through them.. I seem to struggle the most with being around my family when they're snacking (chips, icecream, etc) and when they're cooking dinner, the smell really gets to me! I'm searching for a buddy that's in the same stage as me to talk to and see if we have any advice for each other. also, anyone that has already gone through this that has some helpful advice!! I wouldn't say i'm having doubts about surgery, i'm just SUPER nervous and very hungry lol. anyone who wants to reach out it would be greatly appreciated!! Jaimie

    Banded 1/31

I was banded 01/29/07 and was in at 10:00am and out by 1:00pm ... I didn't have too much pain except a lot of burning at the port site and horrible left shoulder pain also. The shoulder pain is probably by biggest complaint right now, especially if i'm working and can't get up to walk around. But I can't sleep much on my left due to the port pain but i'm doing ok with the diet and all ... everyone keep up the good work !!

    Banded 1/31

I was banded 1/29/07 and it was just yesterday that I finally felt "good". Maybe being 52 has more to do with taking a bit longer to feel better but nonetheless I'm glad it's done. After reading almost every post on this site,,lol,,I had all my pre and post op lists checked off before going into the hospital. Thanks to all who gave their suggestions from which the lists were compiled, it was a life-saver! It's full liquids for me until my 5th week,,so I'll keep checking the food/recipes section for updates. God bless all those who have posted and have eased the way for all of us "newbies".:clap2: Banded 01/29/07 Dr. Ken Cleveland CMMC-Bariatric Weight Mgmt-Jackson, MS Pre-surg wt 330 Post surg 7 days-318 Goal- 160

    Banded 1/31

Hi Anne, A little delayed in responding to your post, but just saw it today. I had my surgery the day after my 66th birthday. I did great. It took me about 10 days to really feel close to normal again, but from reading a lot of the posts on here, many people much younger take that long and longer. I really think it is very individual and that had I done this at a younger age I might have bounced back a little sooner. But I really believe it was worth it. I believe that I will probably lose the weight a little more slowly than those that are younger, but that will probably be better for my skin. I am mostly excited about what the weight loss will do for my health and my ability to be active and not have to "slow down" due to my age. At least it will no longer be my weight that is holding me back.

I have only had few minor burps, however, I do think that the Prevacid SoluTabs, 1 daily, is taking care of that. This was a prescription by my surgeon upon my release from the hospital. The cherry creme chewable Gas-X tabs are really taking care of the gas pain in my shoulder. Thank you so much to MICHELLE & JILL for their truly appreciated advice ! . I also forgot to make arrangements for my slew of daily prescribed meds to be changed to either liquid or chewables, so going cold turkey has make me so weak.:faint: I can't believe I am really getting this senile ! I'm still on only clear liquids, but, tried a little applesauce today and it great ! We'll stay in touch..........10/31 banders ! Until later.........take care everybody.....

    Packing For Hospital

You will have an IV while you are there, so plan to enjoy rocking a hospital gown. Take two or three pairs of pannies, maybe a robe, and a comfy outfit to wear home. I took basic toiletries like toothbrush, toothpaste, deo., lotion, Chapstick, shampoo and conditioner and a brush. If your hair is long, then a ponytail holder. Take books or a tablet, most hospitals have wifi, cell phone and don't forget chargers. Also, some slip on shoes are great and some socks. Good luck! I was sleeved on August 28th and have lost a total of 22 pounds, 10 from five day preop. I am so happy I did the sleeve! ZERO regrets other than should have done it sooner! I only spent two nights in the hospital and was up walking the afternoon of surgery.
  25. I started my liquid diet early and felt day 1 was ok but day 2 was horrible. I am still eating today (ajuly 4th) because the fam planned a big deal for what was supposed to be my last day of food for 6 weeks! Lol. My "last meal" will be a steak. Tomorrow I am back on the liquids. I didn't have money for protein shake stuff so I am just doing skim milk am/lunch/pm and juices and diet gold peak tea for caffeine. And water water water! Chicken broth in the evening to quell the hunger pangs for better sleep. In two days I lost 10 lbs! Back on it tomorrow though for the long haul! July 31st needs to come soon! Still waffling between excitement and fear...but I feel like I am getting things together so As I get stuff done I will be more calm.
