    Example of Food Quantities

Also, is greek yogurt like ice cream and considered a slider food?

    Example of Food Quantities

Yougurt is a slider food even though it's good for you it passes right through the band without much effort. There is nothing to chew. The best thing to do is add something to yogurt like fruit berries or some high protien Cereal. Like to add Kashi go lean crunch to it. This way your getting all the benefits of the yougurt and Protein and not letting it slide right through where you are hungry again too soon. Best of luck to you!
  3. I'm newly banded and am still on full liquids. I had 1/3 cup of greek yogurt for breakfast yesterday and it kept me satisfied until lunch. I love yogurt but was told when I get on regular foods I don't need to eat it because it is a slider and won't keep me satisfied for long.

    Need to loose ten pounds

I lost 20lbs ish three weeks prior I had three protein shakes and a very lean dinner. I had unlimited raw veggies and for snack a cup of Greek no fat yogurt. I also rode my stationary bike 30 mins. a day, minus Sundays.
  5. I'm almost 6 weeks post op! My eating options are SO limited right now, there are a couple of things I crave on a daily basis....I LOVE McDonald's Unsweetened Tea w/Splenda. I get a large and sip it over time! It's a lot and I'm getting in plenty of fluids!! (Water makes me vomit, twice last week) Also I'm loving my Greek yogurt, it's sweet enough to feel like I'm having dessert!! What are your must haves? Kim

    Helpful tools at home post-surgery

I'm in Memphis too! Who is doing yours? I went to St. Francis. I didn't really use anything different kitchen tools wise. I just stocked up on Protein powder/drinks and sugar free popsicles. I did get a bunch of those ziploc plastic containers. They have the small ones that hole 4 oz and that's I measured meals once I got to that stage. I put my yogurt, eggs, etc in them and grabbed and headed out the door.

    Protein shakes

Are you doing preop diet? I added Greek yogurt. Go for Fage or chobani because they have a lot of Protein in it and that will keep you fuller longer.
  8. Hi All, I am looking for any suggestions that you may have to my nose issue. 11 weeks ago I had jaw surgery and 4 weeks ago Lap Band surgery. Lapband was easy because I could not eat from my jaw surgery. I have yet to really eat solid foods. My Issue- meat stinks to me now. I usually have yogurt, yogurt smoothies, Atkins drinks, 42 gram protien shots, Water, Vitamin water, and all of my Vitamins. If I smell meat at all, I nearly gag. Today at work in an attempt to begin eating more solid food (as I have no energy) I ordered a scrambled egg with cheese and bacon on the side- It stunk when my co-worker brought it to me. Later I ordered a chicken salad and potatoe salad- trying to find something that I could have a few bites of and when I opened the chicken salad, it smelled awful. I know it was not spoiled, its just me. It has been 11 weeks since I have had food my jaw does hurt when I chew but now I need more nutrition to make it through the day. I know of you are thinking why is she trying to eat those things and had the lapband, because I do not know what to eat anymore and I need the protien and I am trying anything that I can. I can only eat about 3 to 4 bites and I am full. Not sure if I have restriction or if my stomach has shriveled up from lack of food over the past 11 weeks. HELP ANY SUGGESTIONS. Thanks
  9. I would try substituting healthier options for your current ones. Try drinking Water instead of diet coke. Or crystal light. Maybe try herbal tea instead of coffee. I found that it wasn't the caffeine I needed in the morning, I just liked a hot drink. It's not easy, and I agree with everyone else, you can't change them all at once. But boosting your water intake and going to the gym regularly are so important post surgery and getting in the habit now will make it a much easier transition. As for sugars, now could be a good time to start checking out healthier sweet tooth foods. sugar free Popsicles are a favorite of mine, and sugar free pudding. I also found healthy choice makes 100 calorie frozen greek yogurts (little bit higher in sugar and carbs than my normal foods, but everyone needs a treat once in awhile!). Most important thing I found pre-surgery is record everything!!! Journal what time you eat and how much. Record how much water you're drinking, and how much you exercise. It can be really helpful to look back and reflect on what you did good and what you can improve on. Good luck!!! You can do this

My husband has been a raving lunatic and pretty much useless since I had my surgery. I think he is having a hard time wrapping his brain around it. There are lots of people here who will help you. Use the search feature for threads about needing or getting support. Also make friends with people here you age? Or maybe close starting weight or surgery date? He is very emotionally supportive but not very helpful, though he does shop and cook for himself and our teen aged son. I only shop for myself. Makes it easier. I buy about the same thing every week: Large tub of of 2% milk cottage cheese Large tub of Greek yogurt 2 cans of albacore tuna in oil 2 1/2 gallon containers of unsweetened cashier milk extra fruit as needed (we have kale in out garden year round and store apples, pears and kiwi from are garden) I also use: 1 medium sized yam About a pound of assorted fruit Cucumber, carrots and 1/2 pound of kale for juicing 1/2 of a chicken ( I pouch it in chicken broth because it needs to be moist so it doesn't get stuck 1 tub of unjury unflavored Protein (I buy it on the internet) To prep meals: I divide the chicken into 6 portions (our chickens are small) 1dump a cup of yogurt into the bullet (you can use a blender) and add a scoop of protein powder, some Stevie and vanilla blend it then fold it back into the rest of the younger in the tub. I usually have 4 oz so that's 8 servings. I mix 2 scoops of just protein powder into the cottage cheese same way. I like it lumpy but if you like it smooth you can blend the whole tub. I make tuna salad no celery because it does go down well. But I do use pickles and onions and some mayo. 2 cans make 4 serving If you don't have a juicer, I do realize that most people don't you can buy fresh pressed juice the small bottles will make 3 servings of Protein shake. Logos the "super foods" versions as they have vegetables mixed with the fruit so are lower in sugar and carbs Sometimes I make the shakes with unsweetened cashew milk because it only has 25 calories (and very low carb or no carb) for 8 oz I bake a yam and cook vegetables for three or four meals (about 11/2 cups. So for one meal a day I might have 1 oz of yam 1 oz of vegetables and 3 oz of meat. I do add a bit of butter to my veggies. It's good to get some fat every day. I like 1/4 of an avocado.i add it to my shake or have it with my tuna salad.

    Pre-op liquid diet

I stated my liquid diet today, surgery is next Monday 11/17/14. So far I have been ok with Atkins shakes and broth. Going to get some Jello and yogurt too. My doctor said I could eat oatmeal too but not a fan of the consistancy of it so I won't be eating that. Good luck to you, I don't know if I could do it for 4 weeks (unless that counts with post op).

    Full now starving?!

I drink about 8-10 cups of water a day. I eat and focus on protein. Typical day: breakfast of either 1 c. cottage cheese or Greek yogurt. Lunch of some sort of protein like tuna, chicken ( no more than 2 oz), or cottage cheese. Dinner again is protein in the form of meat and maybe some veg if I have room. Snacks, maybe some fruit, had watermelon the other day. I'm also not that active right now as it's 30-34 degrees C out. I'm not used to this heat and worried about dehydration.
  13. I am a month post op and am on soft foods. What seems to be the case for me is I can eat up to 15g of protein at a sitting. My protein goal is 70g for the day. 5 sittings brings me up to 75g, IF I get 15g at each one. I don't. Some sittings are only 8g. So, I need to eat 6 times a day. Before noon I might get one solid meal, but mostly it is just milk, coffee, vitamins, and fiber (26g protein). After noon I usually have a can of tuna, an egg, cottage cheese, and yogurt. Takes until bedtime to get everything in.
  14. I have Medicare and Medicaid and they paid for everything. I would suggest you try some Protein shakes. Greek yogurt also helps me for a snack. Please keep working on this your health is important. I have HBP, High Cholesterol, Arthritis, Insomnia. I went to the doctor last week and he took me of my acid reflux meds and took blood work to see if I can stop my cholesterol meds. I waa banded on January 27. When I went to my first doctor's appointment on September 27 I weighed 249 now I am down to 215. Please keep me posted on what happens.

    New food choices

I'm going to try yogurt tonight and see what happens. I also had a tbl. of hummus at lunchtime that went down well. I've got 3 calls into the nutritionist at my doctor's office, but she still hasn't got back to me. Thanks for the help!

    Pain

I never hear anyone talk about the pain you feel when you eat solid food. I'm wondering I am the only one experiencing this? The pain is excruciating, it'll take me to my knees! I'm unable to function, barely able to handle it at all and it will last for 2-4 hours. When I was able to eat solid food, the first thing I tried was soup with veggies so soft they melted in your mouth. I had two teaspoonfuls and before I took my third I felt this really hard knot forming from my stomach to my throat, my back teeth started ringing and shooting pain. It hurt so bad I could barely get to my bed to lay down! It lasted 3 hrs. I figured I ate to fast. The next day, I tried again, the same thing I figured I ate to much this time. It took me awhile to try again, it really is something I am afraid of now! The next time was on the day of my 1st check up, 10 days later. I had a scrabbled egg, chewed the crap out of, took 20 minutes to eat it and didn't actually eat the whole egg! It didn't hurt but it was alittle uncomfortable. My doc app was fine! So from the time I ate it to the time my doctors appointment was over was 3 hrs. I got into my truck and took a sip of water (first sip since before breakfast) and almost instantly I was doubled over in pain. I sat in the parking lot for about 40 minutes before I could drive, I still wasn't ok but better. When I got home I went right to bed. An hour later I tried water again and same thing, pain. At this point it was 5 hr since breakfast, and by now I'm behind on my water consumption. It was a total of 8 hrs of pain. Thankfully it goes away and I'm able to drink water again! Doctor told me to goto liquids only again for a while. It's about 7 weeks since surgery and I can't do solid food unless it puréed. I've hurt myself a couple more times trying to salmon and spaghetti O's. Now I'm just to afraid to eat. I stick with the protein drinks, yogurt and broth. If it doesn't have protein in it then I don't bother. My family and friend keep telling me that I have to eat at some point but I'm to afraid and plus no appetite. Doctor says that with the supplement and protein drink I can live fine. Does anyone else experience this pain?

    Way too full

I decided to start using up my unflavored Protein powder. I mixed a banana yoplait yogurt, soy slender and a scoop of unflavored Protein Powder together in my magic bullet. I have never had a Protein shake fill me up as much as this one did. I can't even drink my Water cause I am so full and I drank that hours ago. I thought the yogurt by itself would need some liquid. Next time I will use less soy slender.

    Burping

I'm almost 1 week post-op and I'm burping a whole lot! One weird episode I had tonight was weird stomach cramps that come and go. It felt like contractions! I don't know if maybe I ate too late or the yogurt I had was too thick but it freaked me out! Has anything like this happened to anyone before?

Time For An Update - May 2012

I honestly can't believe how time has flown. At first it seemed to go oh so slowly. I think in part because my diet the first few weeks was liquid and I couldn't wait to move onto eating something more substantial. I am very pleased with my progress so far. I will see my surgeon on Tuesday, 5/29, for my 3 month post-op visit (though I will be shy by 10 days of being out 3 months). I think the main things I've learned are how badly simple carbs affected my life. My surgeon does not allow carbs until Month 7 - so I have had no bread, pasta, potatoes, beans or even nuts since surgery. It really hasn't bothered me which has been a surprise. I think it also shows that if you stay away from these things you won't miss them, but if you eat them you will think you can't live without them. I am currently on my surgeon's Stage 4 diet which means I am to eat 3-5 oz of protein and 2 oz of fruit/veggies for my meals - 3 x day; plus a serving of yogurt and then a protein shake, if needed to make my required protein levels (63-87g per day). I am completely unable to eat this much food. I can tolerate 1 1/2 oz of protein. Any more than that and I cannot hold it down. It also seems that everytime I have tried to even have a bite of veggies after my protein I also then can't keep my meal down. One thing about the Sleeve is that it is unforgiving and it teaches you what you can and cannot do quickly. One thing I continue to have to work on daily is taking a good amount of time to eat and chew, chew, chewing my food. I downloaded a free app for my iPhone called Timer+ and set up two timers (amongst many others). One is called "Take Time to Eat" and it's set for 20 minutes; the other is called "Wait to Drink" and it's set for 60 minutes. So what I do is when I begin eating I activate the first one and then when I am done eating I activate the second one. It has worked out pretty well for me. Not ideal if you are in a big group or travelling - I was out of town for several days each of the last 3 weeks. Speaking of that I took six different flights to travel - on different airlines and different models of planes. I brought my personal seat belt extender with me, just in case, and I'm thrilled to report that I never needed it. What a great feeling!! At the same time I found it so much easier to walk down the aisle when having to go use the rest room. If there's one main thing that I need to do better, it's get in regular exercise. I have done OK - usually at least 30 mins a day of walking, swimming or biking. But my surgeon wants me to get 90-120 minutes in a day. To help with that I just joined LA Fitness this week and signed up to work with a Personal Trainer once a week. It was a big financial commitment but the sales guy reminded me that by having the surgery I had already made a major commitment (smart sales guy I guess I had a introductory session yesterday and have my first official one tomorrow night. I'm also going tonight to get my measurements done and do some cardio. On Sunday, 5/13, I celebrated not only Mother's Day but also the fact that I lost more than 50 lbs -- 50.8 to be exact. What a great feeling. I'm going to try and attach an updated photo of myself taken that day below. That's about it for now..... Very, very happy with my decision to have this life changing surgery. Im struggling preop diet

I am on day 10 of a 2 weeks liquid diet. When I get hungry I eat greek yogurt, usually with a squirt of Water Enhancer (like Mio) or have broth. I'm suppossed to have 3 ensure nutritional drinks a day and I usually make an additional shake myself with Protein powder. Also I have been having Miso soup- I figure its really a vegetable broth if you strain out the seaweed & tofu. It just feels more substantial to me. I can have sugar free Jello or pudding or popsicles but I just dont care for any of those. I ended up trying each but feeding the rest to the Grandbabies. Plus of course lots of water and ice tea. I'm not starving, sometimes I feel kind of empty and my stomach does growl loudly when its getting time for some yogurt. I do have to keep reminding myself at the grocery store- you can't have that as I start to reach for something. Good luck to you both, it will be fine.

    KC Metro.....

I was very unsure about it as well - same thing I never cared for protein/diet shakes either. It actually went a lot better than I thought it would. My preop diet was 2 shakes and then a lean cuisine type meal - if I absolutely felt like I needed another meal/snack they said I could do one more shake. I never had to though. I went through something mentally right before I started the preop diet - where I told myself this is ridiculous. I have spent years destroying my body with poor choices - I can give myself 2 weeks of doing anything to help start getting back on track. Dr Malley's staff actually told me it would be ok to drink a slim fast shake vs some of the 'protein' shakes. This pretty much saved me - because I ended up really liking them. In fact, I still to this day enjoy one almost every day as one of my meals (sometimes b/c it's fast and/or portable and sometimes b/c in the morning my band is tight and I still want to make sure I get protein in. They said I could add some frozen fruit and puree it in - which helps with flavor and making it thicker so it's more like a smoothie. Now I will admit that I choked down the first 1-2 until I got used to the taste - but now I do love them (I still don't care for the smell - it's the protein smell - so try not to smell them b/c that is what made it hard at first) I would buy the slim fast high protein shakes, creamy vanilla and creamy milk chocolate (I do not like the chocolate royal or other flavors such as strawberry or cappuchino) The high protein varieties have only about 10 more calories than the regular but several more grams of protein. I would add about 1/4-1/3 level cup frozen blueberries or frozen diced strawberries (unsweetened) to the vanilla and strawberries to the chocolate, adding 2 packets of splenda helped really offset the tartness of the fruit and made a delicious shake. (ps - I use my magic blender to puree - great item!) Now I add the frozen blueberries, 3oz nonfat plain greek yogurt and 3 packets splenda to the vanilla shake - tastes like blueberry cheesecake (the greek yogurt only adds about 40-50 calories but 10 grams of protein which gets it to around or above the protein level of true protein shakes (you will have to clear the extra calories with your dr though) I also add the same greek yogurt, splenda a dash of cinnamon and 1 tsp espresso powder to the chocolate shake - tastes like mocha cheesecake. Just make sure the pre-made shakes in the can are cold or add cold milk to the shake powder. The reason I never cared for the other protein shakes was due slightly to their taste but a lot of it was a texture thing - they were very watery/thin. Other tips - I had lots of sugar free jello, sugar free gum and hard candy on hand (couldn't go crazy with the candy b/c it still has some calories - but it helped keep other things out of my mouth!) When I picked my lean cuisine meals I picked ones < 300 cal. and tried to stay away from ones like the pizzas or sandwichs (more obvious bread)and also avoiding the ones heavy in pasta. I wanted my calories to have a higher protein value than carbs - I knew that would help me feel fuller. I hoped this helps some - GOOD LUCK!

    Lump in throat

I have had a lump in my throat for two days now. I am four weeks post bypass. I have eaten only yogurt and cottage cheese since the sensation began. I thought it was from turkey that I ate that may have been too dry. I would have expected it to have dissipated by now. I am on ant-reflux medicine, so I don't think it is that. Any ideas?

    Full liquid phase

I was able to have all of the above, plus yogurt, sugar free pudding and cream of wheat.

    Help!!!

Breakfast: Greek yogurt or oatmeal Lunch: Usually salad with left over protien from night before or cup of chili or chicken salad sandwich on a bagel thin Supper: Protien (steak, pork chop, meatloaf, fish) fresh veggies (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower) maybe a starch a couple times a week. Sometimes I just need a potato.
  25. Liquids slide right through. You are fine! Put your thumb and forefinger together to make an "O." That's about how big the passage is. Of course liquids can flow through easily. I was told that things like yogurt, applesauce, etc., will have the same effect -- they will flow through easily and as a result, you may become hungry somewhat quickly. I was banded on the same day that you were. My doctor does things very differently than many here, I am finding. I was told to start mushies two days after banding. (I really could not stomach that thought until today though, when I started feeling very 'normal' and hunger resumed to a slight degree.) I have no idea why my doctor's office is so different. They just call themselves "progressive." LOL. But you should stick with your own doctor's advice. I think you actually lose a lot of weight on the liquid diet, vs. those of us who start mushies fairly early, so that is one benefit. Anyway, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Being able to consume a lot of liquid doesn't mean your band slipped. After all, they want us to consume about 64 oz of Fluid per day. They wouldn't recommend that if it would mean a possible slippage.
