Hi Bernie, I don't mind helping out. I had the Lap Band in 2005 and then had a revision to the Gastric Sleeve last month. You can email me if you'd like @ kekerene@hotmail.com, just put your name in the subject line so I don't delete it thinking it's junk mail. -

Getting insurance coverage can be difficult. Generally the hospital and surgeon have staff that can assist you. Cost is generally a major concern. There are several different forms of Weight Loss Surgery (WLS). These different forms have different outcomes. In some you lose weight faster and deeper than others. Some have a higher probability of requiring revisions. (I decided that when I underwent this surgery I did not want to undergo it again.) Some forms of surgery are better suited for any co-morbitities you may have. For example I had GERD. If I got the sleeve it would only compound this problem and RNY was better suited for this condition. You might want to get briefed on the various steps you will need to go through - psych evaluation, classes, pre-op tests etc. You may want to start to attend Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meetings. They are free and generally occur monthly. Depending on the requirements of your insurance, you may need to go through a medically monitored diet and exercise program to qualify.

Gastric Sleevr Vs. Bypass
kweenSash replied to NYCGirl9269's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If I knew what I know now I would have just went with bypass from the jump. The regain is ridiculous but that was my fault and the pandy didn’t help either. So now im headed for a revision in December😫 -
I was Sleeved the 20th a revision from Lapband, so far everything is great except Iv had a few breakdowns over not being able to eat. I still have 2 more weeks before mushy I feel great and went back to work after 3 days off. I'm only required 40 g of protein and for the first time ever I'm actually taking all my vitamins. Iv lost 14 lbs so I'm 15 lbs from goal but I know the less to lose the harder so I'm in no hurry. I love hearing how others sleeved the same month are doing so please keep the stories coming !!

Jacqui, I'm happy for those for whom the LapBand has--so far, anyway--caused few or no problems, but that group is not a miniscule as you might believe...nor are the problems as minor as one might assume from reading your post. A young woman on another board I frequent, who was LUCKY because her surgeon was Rumbaut, just spent 9.5 hours in surgery and 11 days in the hospital having her band revised to an RnY. If it took Rumbaut, one of the most experienced band surgeons on the planet, 9.5 hours to fix something...it was a mess. a mess that MANY other doctors would not have had the experience to repair. I never said that mental health was not important. If someone is unhappy being obese, that's just another good reason to do something about it. But if anyone is having any wls in hopes that "the other kids" will like them better...they need help. There ARE people who have surgery for all kinds of reasons...and doctors who, for their own reasons, actually perform surgery on people with bizarre reasons...like the doctor in Scotland who amputated the healthy limbs of people who just felt they'd be happier with only one leg. But to tell the truth, I've encountered several people who have learned AFTER having wls (or various types) and losing substantial weight, that not fitting in and not being accepted and all of that was NEVER about their weight.

Taking a Gut Punch (Self Defense, Martial Artists, Boxers Advice)
cakegirl replied to JJLESLIE's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I asked my surgeon about the port in these situations, given that I did karate and wrestling and can't wait to go back to them... He seemed to think it would all be fine, and I he chose the type of band based on which port had a lower profile with the contact sports in mind. He has said that if I lose all my abdominal padding () that he can revise the port's location in the future. -
Marla, I am sorry to hear that. I'm at 135 which I guess is a better weight for me or at least my boyfriends says so. But I'm going to try to lose 5 and remain around 130 give or take a few. That is my goal anyways. It's not easy maintain. Really have to watch myself. Although I think my biggest downfall that is hurting me is I quit tracking my intake. So I really need to start tracking again. Again Marla, I am so sorry to hear that about your revision. Does your surgeon have an answer as to why it "failed"

Hi! I'd love to be your buddy! It sounds like we are in a similar boat. I was also banded, was successful, and then had complications... My revision to RNY is next Monday, July 20 I am curious to hear about how the surgery went for you? How does the healing compare to the recovery from band surgery? Be well! I'm right behind you! -

Sleeve Revision to Bypass
Tomo replied to SarahP1220's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was 100% worth it for me. Easier recovery for me as well. I feel normal, normal as in pre any WLS but with the added benefits of smaller meals. Hard to explain. No side effects except the common constipation which is easy to treat daily with a tsp of miralax in my coffee. Severe gerd was hell to live with day in day out, night in night out, year in year out. I finally got tired of acid coming up through my nose when I was finally asleep. In the end, no ppi helped no matter what I took. I was told right away not to expect much weight loss. "Perhaps 40 lbs" . If your previous WLS was done properly, the weight loss will usually be much slower after a revision. I did it for the relief of the gerd. I really had no choice. -

California Guy replied to Holodisplay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No fraud there. You changed your eating habits for the better and lost weight as a result. That's great progress. I started the year at 300 lbs. and had my Revision to DS in May. I talk about the change in nutrition and revision surgery with whoever asks. Getting comments like "You look like a different person" all the time. Remember the surgery didn't take any weight off. Your new nutrition plan did. If you follow the plan long term, you'll reach your goal. I got the sleeve 7 years ago. I didn't plan out my nutrition very well. I relied on protein bars and protein shakes heavily as a long term diet. I've learned since then it is better to base your nutrition on natural sources, not processed foods. Once I finished the puree diet, I stopped consuming protein shakes and protein bars. -
Band removal and sleeve done at same time?
Dr. Treen replied to june2010's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Having 8 cc in a VG band and still no restriction raises the question of a possible errosion of your band. You should request that your physician send you to a gastroenterologist for an upper GI endoscopy. You should have the band deflated first to permit the endoscope to cross through the band. If there is an erosion, the band will need to be removed. Revision to a sleeve gastrectomy if possible would have to be at a later time, not simultaneous with band removal. -
Weight gain and freaking out.
Carriejess replied to CaliGal1's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I spent last year cross fitting I'm taking a break while I heal from my revision. I weighed 182 when I started and a uk 18 I weighed 182 ten months later uk size 14. Cross fit puts muscle on quick but will improve your body. When you do something like cross fit you have to focus more on measuring/ clothes size especially if you are somewhere around the weight you should be because you probably won't lose and may gain some weight but imagine how fit, healthy and toned you will be! So hard when you have been purely focused on losing for so long, good luck! -
Excess Skin: And the Emotional, Thick Skinned Woman

@@My Bariatric Life may I ask what ongoing complications you are dealing with? I am 2 years post plastics and doing great, but I had some sort of injury to my right breast, resulting in a seroma that would not go away, resulting in removing the implant, resulting in me needing a replacement. My implants are small, but they give that youthful upper fullness that I have none of without. Anyway, it is not a big deal but I had no idea that implant revisions are so common (for one reason or another). Anybody on the fence about it should be aware that something like 20% of implants are revised in the first few years post op. sometimes it is because the patient wants to "go bigger" but sometimes it is mysterious stuff like my story.... As far as my arm lift, lower body lift - no issues, it is behind me and i don't expect any ongoing problems. My scars don't bother me either. -
Hi there! Welcome!! I had my band out just before Christmas and revision to RNY. Best thing I ever did! Yes you can keep it secret. The first month or two isn’t hard at all (esp if you are ‘on leave’ for the op itself). Within a week you’ll likely be up and about, many return to light duties. I needed 3 weeks but had full open 5 hour surgery. I am 5 months out. NOW it is hard to keep it secret! I look normal. People who saw me 3 months ago when I was 20 or 25kg weightloss didn’t really notice - but the last 10kg I have gone from chubby to normal - and it is dramatic. NOW people are asking if I am well etc. If you want to keep it private, and I did because I am a sort of public figure, then in those early months make it clear you are dieting hard, on a high calorie restriction diet like optimist (All will be true, so no problem!) and also have people see you exercise. I do the stairs at work, 7 stories, and people see it and talk - positively. All of this is not RNY specific - any optifast-type severe calorie diet will do the same - my strong recommendation is, use that early food-restrictive time to get people used to “you’re gonna get thin’ - and double benefit is you’ll find some buddies who will help you stay on track with it all!! Good luck!

How often do you vomit/PB?
SherryW replied to mandi78's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Kyoto...this far out you shouldn't have to stick with such liquidy foods in order to keep them down dear and to still be having slight issues with those tells me something isn't right. Bridgette - you should also be able to eat solids without having issues and having "a sore throat from throwing up so much" is also a sign you're throwing up ALOT. Damage can be done to your esphogus. Be careful folks! What I can't stress enough is a simple swallow study that takes 15-30 min will allow you peace of mind or at least to know IF something is wrong with your band. BELIEVE ME......I've been there. I too was surviving on soup, soft cheeses, liquid protein drinks and a tell tale sign something is wrong is if it's been 2-3 hours later or more and you're still burping or tasting whatever it is you put in your stomach. NOT GOOD! I had my first band in 2/2006 and a revision surgery because of a slip in 12/2008 and my band removed in 2/2010 because of yet another slip and prolasp. I know all too well what can happen. This last time was a doozy in that my band that was placed inside me in the position of looking at my left shoulder was looking at my left foot by the time it was removed. PLEASE.....just get yourself a swallow study. As I said before whats the worse that can happen...1. you're ok and have peace of mind or 2. something is wrong and now you know why you're burping, throwing up and can't get healthy protein down. When folks have the band all that should be happening is that you can eat smaller portions and feel full...not feel pain, not throw up and you should be able to eat just about any healthy food you want other than foods that group or bloat when in your stomach like bread, rice and pasta. Any meat, veggie or fruit should be able to be eaten without too many issues or getting sick. Sure you'll have some foods that just won't agree with you but for the most part you should still be able to eat, exercise and be comfortable. If you're not then your band is either too tight or something is wrong. -
How often do you vomit/PB?
NurseMelly replied to mandi78's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Tammy, I know this can be hard to hear but the band does not work for everyone. There might not be anything wrong with your band. Some people just cannot tolerate having something around their stomach. Why are you against the sleeve, may I ask? There are many people on this very board who had problems like you describe and have revised to a sleeve. I wouldn't rule that out as an option. Definitely check into everything and see a new doctor. I wish you the best of luck. As for PB'ing eveyday, it is not normal. I don't care what people say. This board really concerns me at times because it seems as though people will put up with anything to be thin. That makes me sad. Throwing up everyday is not normal and it can be harmful to you. If it's happening, you need to find out why. -
I had the band installed in 2011, and whereas I lost 70 lbs then, it just stopped working and ended up causing more issues in the long run. I revised to RNY March 21, 2018. I was nervous as well, but, it was the best thing I've done and I really wish I did it before. Now, to your questions. It's going to be hard for you to just hide your new eating requirements. You can keep it to yourself, but, you might get questions about why you are not eating breads, or sugars, or high fat foods. If you haven't researched it, the bypass can (and does) cause dumping if you eat certain foods, dumping sucks. My nutritionists hammer the 5/5 rule. If the food has added sugar, then it can't have more than 5 grams of sugar per serving, and fats should be less than 5 grams per serving. This is harder than it looks at first because of how many foods have added sugar that you just wouldn't figure would. So, ordering appetizers (which are typically bready or fried) might not be the best answer. But you can eat a nice side order sized salad with some grilled chicken and balsamic or other dressing that would fit your personal restrictions. I've eaten a whole slice of pizza, took me a while, no dumping or major issues, except I felt like crap shortly afterwards, very run down and drained. It's a major lifestyle change. Not to scare you off, I wouldn't go back to eating the way I did for any reason at this point. Don't think you can't enjoy yourself, oddly (for me anyway and it seems most people are the same) I have ZERO problem with natural sugars. So, I could sit and eat a ton of strawberries and not have a single issue. Plus there are the whole taste changes that seem to happen to folks. For me, I can't stand the taste of things that are too sweet or have too much added sugar in them anymore. So, bottom line, you can flub a bit, tell folks that you've made an eating habit change, which isn't a lie exactly, and that's why you are eating differently, but that's really going to depend on your friend/family base if that answer is going to appease them. Good luck on whatever you decide!
