Sleeve to bypass
Losingit2018 replied to heatherann's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am going in for revision from sleeve to rny on 9/12 due to hernia and gerd. I will be following this thread and your progress good luck and thanks for sharing! -
I just did this early June. I was around 5.5 years out from sleeve. I didnβt have any issues with the sleeve and my RnY revision has been equally smooth. I prefer the restriction of the RnY vs the Sleeve and my loss has been more significant percentage wise vs my sleeve. Getting used to the vitamins has been a struggle I never took them with the sleeve nor did I need them.

I'm also 5 years post VSG this year. Dealt with some regain about 3 years ago. Also lost a parent, moved, changed jobs, etc etc etc. My regain was slow and I did the "I can eat everything in small amounts" thing for a while. I went crazy online looking for the magic reset button. I consulted on a RNY revision. I was desperate...then a really ugly health issue (one that I had surgery to help combat) returned and was really bad and I had a very REAL 'come to Jesus meeting' with a doc who told me some cold hard truths. I went full on Keto and haven't looked back. Got the health thing back under control. Lost my regain. The BIGGEST thing- I had to get out of my own head and realize that I knew what to do, I just had to DO IT. So I started attending support groups again, seeking out all sorts of them that were NOT affiliated with my surgeon, since I was embarrassed to run into someone familiar. I also met with a new nut. psych and NP team. I focused on my health and thankfully, mostly got it back again. I know that this will be an ongoing issue for LIFE, for me the work never stops and unfortunately life doesn't just pick up one day as a 'former' WLS patient. I will forever be a WLS patient, working through my plan, dealing with struggles and keeping the focus on point.

Peggy now that your 4.5 years out from the VSG to sips revision how is everything going? I havenβt seen anyone else on these boards that far out from revision. Any updates on lifestyle, weight loss or regain, bathroom antics. Curious bc I am considering a VSG to sips revision. Thank you!

Just starting journey band to bypass
kathymae replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had issues with the band. Emergency surgery to remove it. One year later revised to bypass. No issues what so ever. Best decision. -
Has anyone dealt with Health Alliance for a revision. Some yrs ago I had BCBSIL and they didnβt even want to cover my hernia repair let alone the revision. So here I am three yrs later trying it again. The only difference is this i Sudan remains requires you to meet all requirements plus have a complication. Iβm just nervous of trying it again to be let down and still be in pain.

Next Thursday the 29th I will have a revision surgery. It has been 5 years since my sleeve. I am having it due to complications from another surgery that included vagus nerve damage, in addition to severe reflux and reoccurring hiatal hernia. Just needed somewhere to share to help with anxiety. Since the surgery that caused the nerve damage I am a lot more anxious this time. HW:316 SW:284 LW:170 CW:194 Photos-before sleeve, lowest weight, last weekend I've obviously had some regain so the revision will help me get back. I have struggled with nutrition since the nerve damage. My blood counts are low and I go in for iron infusion at the hospital currently. I'm really hoping that the surgery won't make it worse! Pain on left side, sometimes under my ribs
beautifuldaymonster replied to lspringman's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I hope this message isn't too late to be helpful, but I had those. It turned out to be a serious kidney and bladder infection. I had to really push all of my doctors and visit the ER three times to find out. The cause of the infection was gross and TMI: I'm overjoyed with my surgery results, but I have to be truthful and admit ultimately the gastric bypass surgery was behind the infection. As you know GBS requires you to eat in a way that makes you vulnerable to constipation. As a result I became very constipated. My stools became dense, hard, round, grayish and heavy like large smooth stones, around jawbreaker size. When these plopped down into the toilet bowl, toilet water containing stool and thus BACTERIA splashed upwards into my underparts. Over time, despite proper hygiene, this created a bad UTI. Moving to a new apartment with a taller toilet bowl helped, as did liquid Keflex, increased water drinking and cranberry juice. But the infection announced itself with sharp, stabbing bedtime pain worse than shingles, under my left ribcage. Later the pain traveled down my back and spine, then to my right side, then back again. It was a very stubborn infection. If you still are experiencing this pain, check for a UTI and kidney infection and make sure that isn't what it is! This was my experience and it started with pain identical in type, severity and location to yours. -
I just had my surgery March 27th if this year so it really freaked me out last month or the month before when we thought I was pregnant. So I contacted my dr about birth control because apparently Iβm allergic to condoms. We never used them since my weight made it impossible to get pregnant. So we tried them and I get rashes and sore after. Anyway since I couldnβt use those I asked my dr about getting on birth control. And she tells me βyou canβt be put on birth control since you had gastric bypassβ okay so I feel like thatβs wrong so have any of you ladies taken birth control after surgery? As of right now weβre doing the βpull outβ method and I know thatβs not the best contraceptive but they refused to put me on any type of birth control and we canβt use condoms smdh.

VSG to RNY - The Good & The Bad
NovemberSleever posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Iβm scheduled for a revision from VSG to RNY on 10/4 (VSG 2016, HW 246, LW 186, CW 233). Hoping to resolve my reflux and regain. I would love to hear some experiences from others whoβve done the same revision. Iβm looking for all the good and bad info! Iβd especially like to know: 1. Any side effects or complications? 2. How much weight did you lose and how long did it take? 3. If you had reflux or GERD, did the revision resolve it? 4. Any regrets with having the revision? Thank you! -
Dr. Francisco Gonzalez and/or Oasis of Hope - Any Feedback?
NovemberSleever posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am scheduled for a revision from VSG to RNY with Dr. Francisco Gonzalez at Oasis of Hope hospital in Tijuana in October. Iβd love some feedback and experiences with either the surgeon and/or hospital. Nervous but excited! Thank you! -
Yeah Like I posted a couple weeks ago, PCP says I am at 68.3% weight loss, He only expected 70%, sorry Son , you're getting me mixed up with the VSG folks , Bypassers can and do lose up to 85% comfortably, like you I have a little more to go to My Own Goal, I'm within 15 pounds and I AM NOT STOPPING WHEN I'M THAT CLOSE!!!! Don't Get Mad, Don't get Sad , Be Glad and Cheer ME on! And I DO NOT THINK THAT IS TOO MUCH TO REQUEST! After all I turned out on this roadway to beπTHE LITTLE JALOPY THAT COULD! BEEP BEEP GLORY-GLORY BEEP BEEP.

I had the bypass done 8/15. Prior to the surgery, I was super excited and ready. The day after surgery I started to regret everything. I was in pain, nauseas and not feeling well at all. It had only been a day so I thought I wasn't being fair. I started moving more and felt a bit better. Here I am....5 days later...balling my eyes out because I have to do this darn puree diet for 4 weeks!!! I want food, REAL FOOD. I am depressed and question myself; was this really worth it? Lies to tell people about what surgery I am having
Frustr8 replied to a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well you could say your Gall Bladder stump revised. Me , sometimes I can be goofy or a prankster- my last off the wall one I'M HAVING THOSE BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH REMOVED- I can get away with it pretty good, because when you're over 70 who really knows what's in there? Of course I really should have used something like that in 2018 when I Did Have mine. Hindsight is 20/20, you know, but I was so durned glad to receive IT. I simply forgot to be flippant. And that's the TRUTH. -
Walk me through your operation
BoredCW replied to Dee2938's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Similar process as GreenTealael. Only difference was that since my surgery was a revision, they offered a epidural and that was done in the operating room. They also asked if I would be ok with a direct line in my neck as it would make injections and taking blood easier later. I said yes to both. 9 hours later I was waking up feeling like I was hit by a semi truck minus the broken bones. After recovery where your pretty out of it and I can barely remember much from it other then a nice nurse that hit a button when I said I hurt. They rolled me up to my room where I took inventory. Besides the incision site, I had 3 drains, Feeding tube coming out of my abdomen. What I didn't expect was my right leg and left arm were sore if not in pain. This was due to how I was laid on the operating table. The nurses were nice about it and provided ice packs to help recover. Your Milage May Vary though as all surgeries are different. Good Luck! -
Nervous about revision
catwoman7 replied to KadieEuropeBound's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
actually, bypass is pretty well known in Europe, so I wouldn't be particularly worried about that piece. complications aren't very common, and when they do happen, they're almost always minor. I had a stricture when I was about a month out, which is an easy fix. I was told that it happens to about 5% of bypass patients, so it's considered the most common complication. I'd hardly call something that happens to 5% of patients "common", but there you go. Suffice it to say, complications just aren't all that common. You can also get vitamin deficiencies, but those usually happen to people who aren't consistent with taking their vitamins. The one exception to this is iron deficiency. Some people just don't do well on oral iron and have to do infusions. But again, the vast majority of us do fine on oral iron supplements. I guess you could call dumping a complication, but only about 30% of RNY patients dump. You can avoid it by not eating a lot of sugar at one sitting (which we shouldn't be eating *anyway*, so...) I'm not sure what other complications you've heard of - but anything outside of what I mentioned are pretty rare. -
Nervous about revision
KadieEuropeBound replied to KadieEuropeBound's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
@freetobeallofme, I would love to stay in touch of your progress with your revision to RnY. I don't know why I'm so nervous now. Maybe, the closer I get to the 9/19 revision date then the more I find more frighten possible complications that goes hand to hand with the gastric bypass. My gerd is mild, per my latest upper GI. The pantoprazole 40 mg is suppressing my acid reflux for now. I'm still experiencing some mucus buildup in my throat and lump like feeling if I eat more than 4 oz of food or eating too fast. 4oz seems to be my sweet spot for comfort level and no gerd like symptoms. I use to be under the believe if I reach the 24 bmi; then my gerd goes away. However, I see some fit people posted on YouTube or othe wls boards still experiencing gerd. I have to lose 25 more pounds to be at a 24 bmi. I'm blame myself for worrying about possible side effects of the gastric bypass. The dumping and reactive hypoglycemia. I worry too much about things that have not happened yet. Up until June of this year, my gerd was not as pronounced. Not until an asthma/allergy attack put my acid reflux to being extremely bad while taking omeprazole. My doctor switched me pantoprazole and that medicine has controlled the daily acid reflux for now. On top of all of this, I will be making a major relocation to Europe, moving to the county Netherlands. So I'm worrying about would the Dutch doctors know how to handle my new medical case if I should still proceed with the bypass. My aunt had a revision from VSG to gastric bypass last year. She has no problems. She's happy. My aunt is super positive and do not let life worry her. I not at that level yet. I still have time to decide if I need to continue with the revision. I pray that I have a sense of peace about this decision. Thank you all for sharing your experiences with me and offering your kindness. -

should i intervene?
GreenTealael replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Nothing to add except this odd coincidence today πππππππ Story Time πππππππ So I'm sitting here the ER with a sore throat (waiting for my thoroughly hot physician to evaluate me) when a random patient blasts past me and nurses chase her down. I overhear the following conversation: *names changed to prevent HIPPA violations* Nurse Jackie: Where are going , hun? Sally Speedman: I'm going home to sleep Nurse Jackie: we can't let you go home. Youre intoxicated and threatened to harm yourself Sally Speedman: I want to go, I'm not drunk Nurse Jackie: Your alcohol level was over 400. We cant let you go. Security or Police will stop you and we will need to strap you to the bed. We don't want that. Please follow me back to your room Sally Speedman: This is my life & I can do whatever I want. I had gastic bypass so my alcohol only appears higher than normal people Nurse Jackie: Sorry but you are intoxicated and you have threatened to harm yourself 4x this month alone. The bypass doesn't change how much alcohol is currently in your blood. You are a danger to yourself. Crisis will need to evaluate you and your levels need to be stabilized before you are released... ππππππππππππππππππππ Patient is escorted by nurses and security back to room. I'm beginning to wonder how many people are experiencing crossover addictions/increased addiction/mental health crisis after WLS. We don't talk about it much prior to surgery except the warning not to drink etc but I don't see a lot of support groups/threads for it popping up either. Are they too embarrassed to ask for help so they simply fall through the cracks? Are Surgeons/Teams just not prepared to support these patients? -
Average loss per week after surgery?
BoredCW replied to loridee24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am 7 weeks and 1 day post-op. I've lost 48 lbs and average about 6.8lbs a week. I have also been told tall men lose the weight faster. I had a revision from RNY to DS. Granted you need to be mindful that your situation will be completely different from ours. You will lose the weight at what your body is set to do. Just focus on learning to eat again and get those proteins. Hope this helps. -
So, my coworker's brother had gastric bypass a few days after I did. Same office, different surgeon. This was 10 months ago almost. He is STILL not eating solid foods. He tried eating a few things, but he got sick, so now he has a food aversion and only eats jello and yogurt. On top of that, he has become an alcoholic. He had blood in his stool and a local doctor thought it was his colon, but then he woke up one night covered in blood. He went to the local hospital (not the one where our surgeon's are), and lost 3 pints of blood due to a bleeding ulcer in his pouch. He drinks a bottle of whiskey a day and also drinks beer. He looks GREY. He has lost nearly 300lbs in the last 10 months alone. He has not told our bariatric clinic about any of this. They don't know about the ulcer, or his drinking, or that he still isn't eating solid food. He is literally going to die. His family hasn't contacted the bariatric clinic either. I don't know this guy - only what my coworker has shared. She says that every day he tells her he regrets what he has done, but is ashamed to contact the bariatric surgeon because they are going to tell him to stop drinking and he doesn't want to. His family has been unable to get him to see anyone about the drinking. Should I make a call to my bariatric office and just be like "hey, I know you can't confirm or deny that this guy is a patient but so and so had surgery on this date with this doctor and this has happened... maybe just make a call to him as a casual "checkup"" in hopes that that will trigger him opening up to get help?

How important is the no drinking before?
Frustr8 replied to Ellf's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Yeah it can push the food along so fast you can't absorb calories, especially if you are part of the general Bypass family, your digestion starts much farther down in the proximal/or/distal end of your jejunem and you are naturally now at a caloric deficiency and this only compounds the malnutrition, sad to say. As the Old Carnival Barker said " YOU pay Your π° money, YOU take your choice" well when we "BOOKED in" our surgeons probably told us, to guarantee good weight loss, a modicum of perfect digestion is given up. In my case I went in more than twice the BMI an 70+ woman. should carry, I needed to LOSE weight before I lost my LIFE and /or I developed all the hereditary diseases I was potential heiress to. The fact that I HADN'T was more Good Luck than Good Planning and my PCP was starting to have a conniption fit that his fancy- shamancy diets weren't working. Want the dictionary definition of conniption? A fit of hysterical excitement or anger, and YES that is exactly how Dr Carroll saw it in October 2017 when I became the ONLY PERSON in his knowledge to ever GAIN 30 pounds with one month of Phenteramine therapy. Oldest person I ever Saw have a tantrum, and like I said, I've been around "since Hector was a pup" and He now has gray on his muzzle. But many of the Things have resolved, I am now. 188 down from 365+, surgeon/ bariatric staff. was SATISFIED with anything below 200, I want to attempt to stay on track to 175, that's MY GOAL! And Doctor Tantrum- Thrower, now he's.PO.end thinks I've lost TOO Much Too Quickly, should have watched What He Said-- for I am nothing but a Compliant Soul , I follow Medical Advice when all's said and done! And although without clothes on, I have blobby stretched out skin where the blubber used to be, barbed I am a Firecracker if not a full- fledged stick of Dy-noh-mite! Honey for a 73 year broad I am looking pretty fine, never was petite, won't start NOW but I look as good as the average over-70 RockStar, and facing the facts there are a lot of 60s and 70s music icons there these days. Always was prettier than Mick Jagger, even at my Worst!πππΆπΈπ΅
