I need to make a decision
Editor57 replied to Beautfully Flawed's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I chose the sleeve even though I have an enormous amount of weight to lose. The doctor even suggested in the first few meetings that I should do the bypass. But I had taken 10 years to make the decision to have the surgery and I knew that I didn't want all of the issues associated with the bypass. I was willing to settle for not reaching my ideal weight and simply getting healthier with the sleeve. I had the surgery 12-12-18, I'm down a total of 93 pounds since I started the entire journey 6-1-18 and I don't regret a thing. Even only 6 months out, I can just about eat anything, albeit it in very small amounts, and have not had dumping or any issues (except chronically low iron, which might not even be related). I guess my only advice is don't be pressured into having the more extensive surgery. Do what's right for you and your goals. -
I agree with what GreenTealael said. For really severe cases that can't be managed otherwise, they'll sometimes suggest a revision to bypass (which often improves - if not outright cures - GERD)

Vyvanse after surgery
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to Mickeymay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
VSG typically does not cause malabsorption because the pyloric valve is left intact and not bypassed (such as with RNY/MGB/DS). So it generally does not interfere with meds. That being said, you should absolutely check with your prescribing doctor and your surgeon to be sure. Additionally, as you lose weight, you may need to have your dose adjusted. Hope that helps! -

Hello Lisa I had my bypass on June 7 2018 I am from West Virginia -
This is all so great to hear! I am scheduled to have my revision from band to RNY on April 5th. I have been vomiting 5-6 per day for the last 3 months and I found a new surgeon who is excited for me to get this revision. Since I have had such a hard time with the band I am not so sure what to expect with the bypass but I am trying to do as much education for myself as i can!

8 hours to go... Am I crazy... update
lambada posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi guys, I'm so excited! I'm having surgery in 8 hours.. My story is a little different from most as I have just had my last big meal. I was allowed to eat up to 10pm tonight and no pre-surgery diet. It's midnight here. I'm in Amman,Jordan, coming from London, met my surgeon for the first time today. Also had all my pre-op tests. this afternoon. Everything was quick and smooth and easy. Tomorrow morning surgery. He said it would take half an hour 40 minutes. I was considering either mini gastric bypass or sleeve and he convinced me to go for the sleeve, even though it's much cheaper. Surgery is cheap and my surgeon seems fantastic. This is all he does and pretty laid back. Originally I was going to stay in hospital only one night but I asked him whether I could stay longer as I'm alone in this country , no companion and he said I could until I fly back to London at no extra charge, and they will be my companion :-) The only problem is there is no Wifi in the hospital.. I'm so looking forward to it and I'm so positive!!! I just know its going to work! Well... I'm 90% sure :-) I guess it's a lot to do with what I do.. and I'm pretty determined. Good night! -
I've heard really good things about the silicone scar tape. Have you talked to anyone who's used it for scar therapy? I'm really not that concerned about my gastric bypass scars from the laparoscopic surgery because they will be so small. I am VERY concerned though about the circumferential scar that's left behind after the lower body lift, and I'm sure I'll need one down the road.

Help Me Understand ... Why The Stigma?
shrinkydinkme replied to amw157's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stigma - you have touched on a different topic then the usual "to tell or not to tell" so I am going to be honest even though it is UGLY! ( Not asking for those of you on here to tell me my feelings are wrong and I should change them, they are what they are and I am admitting up front with UGLY I know they are, but feeling have a mind of their own- they are not facts or chosen beliefs that we control) #1 I am EMBARRASSED I felt I needed to and decided to "not do it the right way" and I am taking the "easy way out". #2 I have judged others for years and wondered why they would have WLS and take that giant risk when they could have just changed the way they ate and exercised more. #3 I do not feel like people understand the difference between the different types of WLS and when I say I had the sleeve even with an explanation of what it is, they just lump me in the WLS category with everyone else and I feel I am so different and made an informed decision and was unwilling for years to get the bypass because of the complications. I do not want to be considered "One of them" ( see UGLY judgement on my part once again) #4 FEAR! So many I know who had WLS have gained it all back and I it breaks my heart and I feel so bad for them and can only imagine how difficult it must be. To have taken such a big risk and failed. I fear that will be me and if others do not know I had surgery it will just be another in my long list of diet fails - some how that I know I can handle, but a WLS fail seems bigger and I would feel much more judged/disapproval so I would rather they did not know. #5 I have way to many friends who would be watching me, asking questions wanting explanations of why and how come and asking me to help friends and adding a lot of to-do's to my daily life -when I am taking time to establish a new healthy lifestyle and do not need the stress or burden that would bring. So if they do not know about my surgery, I do not need to be bothered to help, inform, explain or whatever would arise by their inquisitive minds #6 I am loosing about 1 1/2-2 pounds a week which is so normal there is no need to give details. It is the easy way out by not telling them. Except for the tiny bit of guilt when they are all excited and proud of me and just can not believe my will power and ability to eat such a small portion and move on. That tiny bit of guilt ..... for now I can live with. -
Be Honest- Is Banded Life Hard?
ireallywannabthin replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Oh boy! I'm so sorry for your struggles! I hope that you are doing better now that you got your band opened up. Thank you everyone for your advice and stories. I think I am losing sight because someone I knew just got the sleeve done and lost 32 lbs the first month... I think I got caught up in that awesome weight loss. I think I'm going to stick with the band.. I truly don't like the thought of my stomach being cut off forever.. and gastric bypass scares me. I know two people who have had terrible complications from it. Thank you all for your shoulders and ears -
Any other BAND on bypass patients?
daisies76 replied to Deleted Account 2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Ladies, I am getting my band over bypass done on May 10th. Everyone that I had talked to has had amazing results, at or below their goal, so I am hopeful. I had my gastric bypass done in 2003, so I am almost 10 years out. Ive gained about 1/2 back. My goal now is to lose about 50 lbs. Are you guys happy you did it? I will be a self pay and Im hoping its the right decision. How was your recovery? How long before you went back to work? I have a desk job, pretty sedetary. -
Any other BAND on bypass patients?
msbam replied to Deleted Account 2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass in June 2005 lost about 120 pounds keep it off for 3-4 yrs then gained back 65 pounds.. Got my band Jan 4 2013.. had 3 fills for a total of 9.2cc in a 14cc band.. have lost about 20 pounds mainly from exercise bc I have a lil restriction after 3rd fill.. am hoping to be at da green zone with my next fill in a few weeks. And yes, I too felt like a failure after gaining weight back but this time around I feel more educated and ready for this life time change.. my 1st couple of yrs with gastric.. that weight fell off without any effort and I felt great, I figured there's no way this weight gonna come back.. But it did and it will continue to if I don't start back eating right and exercising.. I'm happy to have that 2nd chance to get it right once again... good luck to u all! -
I had Gastric bypass in May b4 my surgery I had heartburn all the time couldn't lose a pound now feeling better no heartburn losing weight slow but steady my back is feeling better I can walk more then a few steps I would do it all again to feel like this so glad I did it.

This is my EXACT story, well minus having the baby part. I too was banded in 2005. I was 280 lbs, lost 70 lbs, didn't keep it off for very long and am now back up to 288. I have had HORRIBLE HORRIBLE reflux, able to eat anything, and am so frustrated!! I have been 3 times to talk to my surgeon about a revision to the sleeve & each time he tells me I need to get an EGD & then I just never go back. I've been looking into revision now since 2013. My insurance covers bariatric surgery but not sure if that includes revisions. I am going to call my surgeon again on Monday & make another appointment. Unfortunately I am in graduate school right now, in addition to working full time, so I don't really have a lot of down time available, so I'm not really sure how this surgery would fit into my life. At this point though I have GOT to do something. I can't continue on this way. My BP is out of control, I'm pretty sure if I'm not diabetic by now I am RIGHT on the edge & this reflux is the worst. I am so happy to hear that you are loving the revision. If I get it done I definitely only want to have it done in one surgery. I can't even imagine the weight I would gain with NO restriction...Anyway, thanks for your post & keep us update about your progress! Candi

I had my revision surgery on 11-14-2012 after surgery they told me the band removal went fine and they were able to repair a hiatal hernia , that was a surprise to them ( and me ) and sleeve me in one procedure. I was SO relieved to have had it done in once procedure. The day after surgery I started throwing up Water and unable to keep it down . After a couple more tried they ordered an EGD for me . They told me if the scope went through easily then and showed no obstructions I should be fine and not need another surgery , but if it did not I could have excess scar tissue from the band and I could need another surgery . WHAT !! Yikes . So they did it and it showed no obstruction some swelling around the band area ( where the band was ) they told me to take liquids slow . For several days I was still throwing up just water, in fact it freaked me out because it looked like I was throwing up some blood as well. Finally around day 3 or so the water was staying down . So finally I was able to go home today . NOT an easy process that's for sure , but I am glad its over. The doc told me to progress my liquids slowly , as long as I was keeping liquids down I was fine , the minute i started if i did throwing up liquids I needed to come back . But to just take it slow . Now 10 days out and I hae had a few instances of throwing up since i got home. But I just back track and go on Clear Liquids again and It gets better. Since I was unable to eat prior to surgery due to my band i sometimes wonder if I will ever be able to eat solids again , but this HAS to be better than the band and the pain and issues i had with them .

What surprised me? I didn't know I'd be having surgery not once, but twice. First time was bypass, 2 days later it was corrective surgery because there was a kink in the small intestine causing me to throw up, have reflux, and not be able to hold anything down. Nothing could prepare me for this. I was concerned I was going to have a nervous breakdown and cried hysterically when I found out during my swallow study that something got messed up. God, it was tough. Tomorrow I do another swallow study. I'm a healthy 27 year old who in a million years never thought something like this would happen. I took the surgery very lightly and I took the pain and recovery lightly. There are millions of things you will see and feel that you simply CANNOT research or read about to understand fully. You will be tested. Emotionally, physically, mentally. You may even regret it. After years of preparing, none of that really helped lol. It's all very individual.

Be Honest- Is Banded Life Hard?
gpax replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The procedure was sold to me as you are saying. I tried my best to follow my water intake, protein shakes and foods off their list. My problem was that I was constantly throwing up stingy meats like chicken, lettuce and almost anything you couldn't grind down to powder consistency with my teeth. I did not throw up soups like tomato or chicken soup or mashed food like mashed potatoes. When my weight loss stalled at about 20 pounds I was told soup was bad for me - too much sodium. We played with adjustments about once every 6 weeks. Not what I was expecting. I have three doctors in the family who suggested I involve my primary care physician after a year and a half to have my band opened up. My HMR diet place in town just closed its doors and I am going back to weight watchers. My gastric surgeon said I should have had a gastric bypass and not the lap band. I would not do it again if I knew my results would be this poor. -
Thinking of getting the Sleeve ... need more info
Malaika replied to Kikiphiasmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They are not really cutting in to you - like a C-section - you will have 5 small incisions - it is done laprascopically. It really isn't painful at all -- I had surgery on Friday and was back to work by the following Friday - I could have gone back on Wed/Thur if not for some intestinal issues. I never had the band; however, after reading all the psots here from those who have had revisions, I thank God that I learned about the sleeve before deciding to go through with the band. With the sleeve, you don't have any foreign objects in your body and the follow-up is minimal. -

I completely understand. I was what we call a bottomless barrel! Lol I could eat all day without feeling full, which is how I got up to my highest weight of 368 lbs =/ I can no longer eat anywhere near as much as I used to. 4 oz and I'm stuffed! There are days I forget to eat and have to drink a quick protein shake before bed to make sure I get in my protein for the day. The majority of the hunger hormone, gherlin, is cut out during surgery, making you feel less hunger instantly. I thought I was going to wake up hungry being that I hadn't eaten anything since the night before, and nope! I was drinking fluids because I had to, I didn't want to end up back in the hospital due to dehydration. Same goes with food! I even set alarms to remind me to eat, because I can go all day with my morning protein, but I wouldn't meet my requirements for the day. Sometimes I'm busy and silence my alarm, only to realize after I put the kids to bed, and I'm about to catch a show on TV that I forgot to eat. Both surgeries ate great, both will help you lose the weight you need to lose, but ultimately your success will be all on you. With either you can stretch your stomach beck out. The sleeve had only been around 5-6 years and I have heard of people gaining back 5-20 lbs, but haven't seen anyone gain back drastically. Do searcheson this site, it's very informative! There actually is a thread where someone asks if you gain back weight after the sleeve. Do the same search for bypass. This site helped me choose between the two surgeries also. There are many ups and downs for both, and it's not the easiest decision to make. Best of luck! -

At the rate I'm losing with my current stall...I'm thinking I should revise my goal to inches lost, instead of weight! -
Sorry if this is a little bit long, but for me it was all part of the process..... I had never considered weight loss surgery. Even though my BMI qualified me, I never thought I was "fat enough" and I also thought I had to do it by myself. Then around New Year's I started having hip pain, and after going through a lot of exams, tests, cortisone shot, etc., it was finally discovered I had an injury to my hip, on top of arthritis, and that I needed arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury. When I finally got in to see the surgeon, he was quite blunt. He told me I was too fat for arthroscopic surgery. That the tools he had to use wouldn't reach through all the fat on my thighs to get to the injury. He also said my hip was in worse shape than originally thought and I was probably looking at needing a total hip replacement, but that he would not perform that surgery on me at my current weight. He explained that I'm young for a hip replacement and chances are it would need to be replaced again in my lifetime - and the heavier I am, the faster I would wear it out. Also the riskier the surgery would be and the more difficult my recovery. He said "I strongly suggest you look into weight loss surgery". I cannot tell you how shocked and stunned I was. And humiliated. At first, I thought "I'm not going to tell anyone". Then I realized... they all know I'm fat. In the end I told all of my co-workers, my boss, my HR person -- they were all SO excited and happy for me and so supportive, I am truly fortunate. My family is equally as supportive. My insurance specifically excludes coverage for weight loss surgery so I started the arrangements for a loan against my 401K. I also started the sleep study process in motion because I knew that would take awhile and I knew a weight loss doctor would require it (the hip surgeon was going to require it too). I started my surgery research. I went to a support group meeting at a local hospital, then a seminar put on by the surgeon I eventually ended up choosing. I was all over the internet reading diaries and blogs of weight loss patients, and watching You Tube video diaries, and I watched the surgery being performed on You Tube. I went back and forth for awhile between bypass and lap band, but being self-pay, I decided bypass was more than I could afford to spend, and I couldn't afford the higher risk of post-surgery complications. It was mid-March when my hip surgeon recommended I look into weight loss surgery. I had just missed the March support group meeting and seminar, so I had to wait until April for them. In the meantime I got the sleep study done. My appointments with the surgeon, nutritionist and psychiatrist were May 1st and 2nd. My surgery was May 15th. I still have the hip surgery ahead of me, and in the meantime I live with constant pain, but it has gotten a little more bearable since I've lost 30 pounds and I'm really hopeful that the more weight I lose, the more the pain will diminish and maybe I can postpone the hip replacement, or possibly even get by just with the arthroscopic surgery for now.

considering the sleeve- please give me your results and why you chose this
FitatFifty replied to coreyandbrett's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi there and welcome. I cannot give you my results yet, but I can tell you why I chose the sleeve. Based on current medical research the sleeve provides almost comparable results to gastric-bypass and in many cases, surpasses that of the lap band. I prefer the sleeve because there is less tinkering with the small intestine, and I have an autoimmune disease that impacts my small intestine. Tiffy's response provides great information on moving forward once you've had the surgery. I know I'll listen to her...she's been so successful with her journey and generous with her knowledge. Hello Landy! I haven't been back in awhile so it was nice to get your post! I had gastric bypass on Jan.21, 2009. I have lost 20lbs. in two months and a total of 65lbs. since last July! Where in Bingo are you? -
When they exclude WLS they usually spell it out saying that any type of WLS is not covered. What you quoted is usally for things like Weight Watchers, LA Weight Loss, etc.. If you can't find anything that specifically mentions WLS (mentioned as adjustable gastric banding and gastric bypass) then they probably have special qualifications. They won't list everything that they cover, but they will list what they don't. Call them and ask. Ask for it to be broken down and emailed to you. I emailed my insurance company, and they sent me a complete list of requirements for surgery. Good luck to you.

Why did you choose sleeve over bypass?
RJ'S/beginning replied to rocknrollmama1980's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
With the sleeve you are able to get some nutrients where as with the bypass you only absorb some nutrients in your bowels..Your bowels are designed to take the last bit of good out of what you eat and then waste. Your stomach is small but it is still there and your stomach acids still break down food and use it for your body. We need a certain amount of Protein to be successful and i don't see how the bypass can get enough good out of what we eat....The pouch is as small as the sleeve.. Eating junk or grazing only leads to dumping with the bypass....Not healthy and not nice.....When I learned about this I switched to the sleeve... How ever that said I am among a very tiny percentage that has both due to complications with the sleeve....But I look at it as if I only have the sleeve because that was the one that made the most sense to me..
