My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)
ShoppGirl replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would ask the surgeon if they have a nausea Med that will work but if not maybe the neurologist would consider the other medication if you need it just for a week or so. -

That's what worries me. I'm already having a hard time with my pills with just shakes, so if I'm to do this another 2 weeks, I don't know what shape I'll be in when I'm allowed to finally have mush. Also, I have 1 medication that has nothing that can be substituted for it (Tecfidera for my MS. It's the strongest oral med there is for it, so I can't take any of the others, and the injections and IV infusions are too strong for me since I'm stable on the Tecfidera and my neurologist won't put me on anything stronger than this as long as my MS doesn't dictate a need for it). So that's why I'm so concerned. My stomach is nauseaus and actually hurts and feels like it's burning (not heartburt because it's not traveling up). I tried stuff to settle my stomach (pepto, Mylanta) and nothing has helped. -
Revision surgery 9/8/2021

Hello sleeve to Sadis. It’s been a while… I did a lot of yo-yoing 2-3 lbs. finally I stopped with my dietician's advice + phentermine and working out 3-4x a week;I’m down a Little over 40 lbs. I know that’s not saying a lot but it doesn’t have to be fast… I just need to see the scale consistently move. I think i wasted my time with the balance diet and probably would have seen better results on 30g CHO or less off top…. but im not complaining. p -
Wow, you lost 44 pounds in 8 weeks! I’ve only lost 7.6 pounds since my surgery two weeks ago. I can’t even imagine losing that much so fast. How often were you exercising? What type of exercise? P.S. Sorry about your injury. Fingers crossed for quick healing.

Iron Deficiency Anemia - Recipes

I cook often in an iron pan. It helps boost the iron content. It can go right into the broiler or oven. I take vitamin C like the others said too. Raisins have a high iron content if you’re looking to add a little extra here and there. A couple times a week, who am I kidding, weekends only, I remember to throw in some spinach/ham in an omelette and eat it with 4oz of V8. Kapow! -
So funny! My husband actually asked me this last week. I hadn’t thought about it until he asked, but it’s a legitimately relevant question.

New to all of this

You can do this! I didn't have a liquid diet; just low carb/low fat/high protein. But even if you do have a liquid diet before surgery, it's just a week or so, and then it's done! The first few days when you are getting over the sugar addiction are the hardest I hear. I had some gas the first day or so after surgery, but it wasn't a big deal. I had a fair amount of pain and took three pain pills total over three days. For reference, I took 4 pain pills in ONE day after some dental surgery. Don't let these things scare you; in the grand scheme of life, they're over in the blink of an eye! -

Do y’all get in ruts with food? I’ve had the same thing for lunch every day for a week. Still enjoying it though! Deli turkey wrap made with a carb balance tortilla, turkey, light cream cheese, and a sprinkle of everything but the bagel seasoning. -
Post-op tips/necessities
Splenda replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This, this, this. I needed the cane for about a week, mostly for going from sitting to standing. It's really nice to have something sturdy to push off of. Go to Walgreens and get an extra sturdy cane. I also needed to sleep in the recliner for about 3 months after surgery. I am a stomach sleeper, so it wasn't until I was completely healed that sleeping felt comfortable. A comfortable recliner was a necessity. For most other things, play it by ear. You don't want to stock up too much on foods because a lot of people experience a change in their taste buds after surgery, so you don't want to have a fridge full of protein shakes that you hate. -
The pre-op liquid diet is only stressful if you let it be that way. It's a new way of life. The sleeve will give you back new life and new opportunities and health. Isn't that worth 2 weeks of a liquid diet? I didn't have any trouble with it. And I had no pain or gas problems after the surgery either.

Hi everyone. I found this forum while trying to research the gastric surgery options. Both my GP and my GYN have suggested a sleeve because of my weight gain and the depression it causes. I will be 50 years old in August and every time I think about how I have struggled with my weight all my life, I start ugly crying. I am 5'2" and 212lbs which is the heaviest I have ever been. I feel old and tired and cant reach my feet. I am terrified of getting this surgery. I have been able to get to a healthy weight only once after having my kids and it was a very strict low carb diet and working out 5 days a week but I was not able to sustain it and it only lasted about a year before I crashed and then Covid happened and I gained more, then my mom died and I gained more. I am reading how stressful the pre-op liquid diet is, and how much pain is suffering from post-op gas and its just worrying me more. My first appt with a gastroenterologist is in 3 weeks.

Yes I do. I learned the hard way the same as you the 1st day lol After that I take them with the last swallow or so of the shake, and while it's not as bad as day 1 when I took them at the beginning, my stomach is still really upset and I get nauseous. My meds are for MS, and they don't come in a liquid form or anything, and I can't skip taking them. So I'm worried about the rest of this diet and the first 2 weeks after surgery. -

Post-op tips/necessities
catwoman7 replied to IWant ToDelete MyProfile's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had very little pain to speak of (many of us don't), but getting in and out of bed could be a challenge - for the first few days I felt like I'd done a thousand crunches when getting out of bed. I didn't have a recliner, but I just had a ton of pillows propped up behind me so I wasn't lying flat. It did help. After I had my first plastic surgery (which was much more painful than my RNY), I bought a wedge pillow. In fact, I'm still using it, three years later. That may have been helpful after my RNY, too. -
The leak will be normally apparent by pain, fever etc. You can find information on google. I had a leak test about a week later which they say if a leak is going to occur, it is usually in the first week. I drank some barium stuff and they x-ray looking for leakage outside the stomach. From what the Doc says, this is a rare occurence.

This part of the journey can be really hard. Try focusing on the reward at the end. What really helped me also, was burying myself in Instagram stories of bariatric patients' progress photos and with those who have reached their goals. Their pictures are truly incredible, and so inspiring. I also agree with Bariatric Hero, try completing a shake first, then take your medications. Hopefully that will help. You got this! You are doing great! 🙂 Is your surgery Monday 5/2? In all honesty, I may have sucked on a french fry from my kid's happy meal. Not one of my proudest moments. I kept repeating to myself during my week pre-op liquid diet..... "I'm shrinking my liver. I'm shrinking my liver. I'm shrinking my liver." -
weight gain after surgery
The Greater Fool replied to Siameseplease's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Scales are crazy making tools of the devil. Cast them out. I am so glad (for a quixotic definition of glad) that pre-op and for at least the first year post-op that I was too large for a home scale. I could only weigh at monthly at follow-ups. As a result, I never saw the stalls that I inevitably experienced. I also noted that my Doc never talked about my weight loss unless I brought it up. He was concerned with how I was doing on the plan, how my health was, my mental attitude, or whatever I wanted to talk about. Once I was able to weigh at home I weighed myself 2-4 times a day for a couple weeks, mostly for the novelty of weighing on a home scale. After that, I just went back to weighing only at follow-ups. All these years later I don't weigh at home, but only at my annual physicals. I can tell by how I feel or how my clothes feel if I need to adjust anything, but honestly don't worry about my weight otherwise. All this to say that especially early on you don't need a scale. Follow your plan and it will work for you. Good luck, Tek -
honestly, weight loss is about 90% food and only 10% exercise. I know WLS patients who lost a ton of weight even without exercise. That said, exercise is great for your overall health and people should do it - but an injury that causes a temporary pause in your routine is not going to be the end of your weight loss. also, you could be in a stall - they're very common. Just stick to your program and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks. and no, I doubt "this is it" as long as you're adhering to your program. Most of us lose for a year - if not more (20 months for me - but I started out much heavier than you, so I had a lot more to lose)

Constipation after gastric sleeve surgery
catwoman7 replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
very common with both sleeve and bypass. And just as a heads up, chronic constipation (even after the first BM) is pretty common, too. the first BM can take up to a week and can be a real doozy, so we were advised to take stool softeners. after that one, a lot of us take a capful of Miralax every day to stay on top of constipation - although others take stool softeners, probiotics, SmoothMove tea, or magnesium tablets. Whatever works... -

4 Weeks Out - Eating is a chore
The Greater Fool replied to eclarke's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I recall feeling this way during the 6 weeks of puree and another month or two with real food. Just had to pay attention to the mechanics of relearning to eat that the actual food was secondary to the process. Once the mechanics became normal eating was more enjoyable. All these years later I still go through periods when i'm fatigued, stressed, focused elsewhere, or in pain where eating is a chore, but this I think is more about the joy of being me than anything else. Good luck, Tek -

@GradyCat @possum220 @ toggletrue thank you for the support and encouragement. I get so much out of this app. I appreciate sharing their journey. I found out from my doctor’s office that I may need to be out from work for 2-3 weeks. My boss said that I could work from home. -

Ok, so day 3 is a wrap, and I'm still struggling, although i was surprised to see I've lost 5 pounds in 3 days on this liquid diet, so that kind of helped my motivation lol I know this isn't necessarily for weight loss per se, but it's at least a nice perk. I'm really just having issues when I have to take my pills. They require food, and even when I take them with milk and/or milkshakes, my stomach still gets really upset. This worries me when the surgery is over and I can only have clear liquids for 2 weeks. I'm really nervous about how sick my stomach will get. -
No leaking for me either. Neither did my three who also had a sleeve. I didn’t have a liquid test to test for a leak either. They can occur anywhere between the first days or up to a few weeks after surgery - I guess until you are fully healed. They are not very common. Surgeons tend to staple & stitch to decrease the risk of a post surgical leak. You can do things to help avoid a leak too. Follow your eating plan (nutrition & not stressing or straining your healing tummy), don’t carry anything too heavy (<10lbs to begin), don’t be too active too soon (gentle walking at first). If you have any symptoms go to your nearest hospital & contact your surgeon as soon as possible. All the best with your surgery.
