  1. At week three, I can move to "smooth" foods. Is that what you are doing?

    2days post op

Try to start getting some Protein. Isopure is considered clear liquid and counts as Water. You wont get any energy till you start to get some protein in your body. It will also help you to heal better. Sip,sip, sip every sip helps. If Jello is on your protocal, not one mine week one you can make it with unflavored protein. I use unjury and use it in sugarfree black cherry jello. Can't taste it and its chalk full of the coveted protein. Good luck, it gets better. I'll be a week post op tomorrow and am managing about 80 grams of protein and I do feel great.

Only 25 Lbs In 4 Weeks!

Last time I was on a diet, it took me three months to lose 14 pounds so I think 25 in one month is awesome!!!!! It's all in your perspective
  4. Hi everyone! I'm scheduled to be sleeved January 9th! I'm quite active now, group cardio and weight classes 4-6 times a week. I realize after surgery weights are a no-no for at least 6 weeks, and I think my current cardio classes would be too intense on the little energy I'll have, but I'm wondering if anyone has taken up Pilates or yoga shortly after the surgery. Any recommendation on how long to wait? I do have a treadmill so planning on that too, but I tend to get e trembly bored just walking so looking for something else. I'm going to Mexico and although I'm sure the surgeon will be great, I won't have any regular check ups. I also don't have a NUT, and plan on mostly keeping the procedure to myself (would rather not hire a personal trainer and share the details). Long story short, anyone start Pilates or yoga 3 or so weeks after?
  5. Hey guys. I made a video to let you guys know how I'm doing. I've recently been switched over to mushies!!! Yay!! So this video update of what I'm eating and whatnot. Enjoy! YouTube - LapBand Day 6 - So far what I'm eating - 11/19/09
  6. Found this in OH forum, hope they don't mind me sharing it here, but it is such a great explanation for why we all go through the inevitable stalls! I take great comfort in knowing this information, so that I don't blame stalls on what I am eating or not doing etc. This explanation is courtesy of Diana Cox. A "stall" at this point is inevitable, and here is why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a sabertooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.
  7. I am a slow loser myself. I've only lost about 34 pounds since my surgery on March 15. Everybody is different. My piece of advice is don't weigh yourself everyday. I don't even weigh myself once a week any more. I only do it when I go to the doctor's office. As I go about every six weeks I see the dramatic loss and it makes me feel much better. Also, don't fret about the amount. Think of it this way: at least you've lost weight! Every pound is a victory.

Sounds like they might have used steri-strips which are strips of adhesive paper tape used with an adhesive liquid to help them stick. They will eventually fall off on their own after a week or two. Does it have lines going through it? If so, thats what it is. VergasAngel, as far as allergies, it sounds like perhaps the latex or plastic in the tape and bandaids may cause skin rashes. Ask for paper tape. Most people handle that without problems.
  11. Correct , I work out 4 times a week and on those four days I have to up my calories , well try to anyway
  12. it gets better...the first two weeks were the hardest...

    Question About Drain

The drain is a flexible tube the surgeon leaves in your abdomen to draw out any fluids that might be collecting near your incision. The end of the tube that hangs out of your body has a squeeze bulb attached to it that creates suction, thereby draining or slowly suctioning the accumulating Fluid out of your body. This is done to prevent infection. Not all surgeons use one. Some folks get theirs removed before being released from the hospital. Some folks get their removed in a week to ten days. It's really up to the surgeon how long it stays in. The drain is also called a "JP" drain. Google "Jackson Pratt" and you will find more information on how the drain works.

I think I overdid it today?

Were you just walking? No lifting, twisting, etc. If you were just walking it is probably OK. If you have a fever or it doesn't subside in a reasonable amount of time, call you doctor. I was cleared to swim at 3 weeks. The first time back I felt great but ached on the left side for several hours afterward. My doctor told me before that I may experience "popping" or "stretching" but that was normal so not to panic.

    Im stalling :(

Regardless of where u had surgery our eating habits wld need to change or we will gain the weight right back. I had my surgery in Mexico and hv changed my eating habits. Not sure why you wld think having it there you wouldn't hv too. The most important thing for success in this surgery is to learn to eat diff. Protein first then veggies. About Your stall... what has worked for me is fluctuating my calories, carbs, protein daily or several times a week. I am over 8 months out and my calorie goal is 1000 (I fluctuate 600-1000 & sometimes over that), carbs (fluctuate 20-60 normally not 60 but I dont freak out if it is that or more every once in awhile) & protein I get as much as I can. Sometimes its 70 or 80 & at times 60. Do you use myfitnesspal app to track your calories, carbs, protein, act? Do yo hv a goal? I realize that everyone's body is diff so what works for me may not work for you. You just hv to experience diff ways and see what works. Dont get discouraged you can do this!

    Im stalling :(

A bunch of my friends (sleevers and non-sleevers) are doing the "Bootcamp" this Monday-Friday that was detailed on another thread. Why don't you try it with us this week?
  18. Hi everyone. I got my band on April 17th - just one week ago today! So far, so good. I have had a lot of my questions answered by reading this message board. Thanks to everyone who posts! Today I found a large red rash on the inside of my thighs and on the sensitive inside skin of my upper arms. What the heck? It doesn't itch but looks like hives or something. Anybody had a reaction like this? Jeannie

    What is recovery like?

okay, I must be weird. Very little pain, other than getting a killer period. I'm uncomfortable, but not in pain. I'm a little bloated, a lot windy (yeah, so what else is new?) and making aome funny gurrgly noises.. (I was drinking Water and sounded like a bath tub draining! ooooh sexy...) I went shoping a couple days after surgery, and drove 800 miles on Friday night with my DH... tomorrow will be my one week bandiversary...

    4 Weeks and almost 40lbs!

You should be very proud of yourself. What an accomplishment! I've lost 14 lbs. in a week or so, and I feel on top of the world. Keep it up!
  21. Gene, as you can see I had the same doctor as Susan so the same from me but I can't believe he did not put you on post-op restrictions. Your stomach does have to heal and mine was swollen and bloated for about four or five days. I am two weeks out and just today started mushies. Let me know if I can help any other way.

    Pain Meds

Yup. Liquid vicodin. It worked really well for me, as I had a hernia repair which gave me a lot of pain for two solid weeks. I used 2 whole bottles. Actually I have about a dose or two left in the bottle. I was not shy about taking it when I could. There's a reason they give you a refill. Everyone reacts differently though.

    Pain Meds

I was told no more than 10 pounds for 2 weeks, then no more than 25 pounds til 6 weeks.

    No loss

Generally when you went in for the operation, you gained weight because they filled your body with fluids. You have to lose those first before you begin to see the scales move. You body is in a major heal mode at the moment. It will take a few weeks of being on the mend and then the numbers will begin to drop. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes. Some people find it difficult to meet their daily protein and fluid goals the first couple weeks because their body is in a heal mode. Just keep working on it and you should get there.

    whyyy?

I only used Protein shakes the first two weeks after surgery... never really liked the taste of them... my doctor said it was better for my metabolism to eat solid protein. I make sure I eat my protein first and take tiny bites the size of my finger nail and I make sure i finish what I have in my mouth before I take my second or third bite. Try taking smaller bites... hang in there. Tom, Toronto Banded July 6 06 Wt. Loss: 156 lbs
