    Vitamins??

I have already started taking my post op vitamins to get used to the chewables. I take 1 Centrum adult chewable and 2-3 Tums a day for the calcium. After surgery I'll add in some type of fiber supplement, like metamucil and pepcid for acid control.
  6. Hi everyone. I had surgery 9/4 and I am doing good. No nausea or vomiting. The gas pains are more or less gone after day 6. I had my 1st followup last Friday and the doctor is allowing me to move up to soft foods. I was on a liquid diet day 1 to 5, the mushies for 2 weeks, then soft food for another 2 (I believe). Starting this Friday, I can eat anything. Has anyone been able to move on to regular foods this fast?

    Anybody on here Jump Rope???

While your healing, I wouldnt advice it. I just had my band last week, and when I am walking up or down stairs I can feel the stitches moving
  8. I would suggest to allow your self time to heal. When in doubt, don't do it. My surgery was 1/23/12 and I waited a month and tried just a 10 lb weight and I felt a burning sensation at the incision where the scope is. I did not pick up a weight again until just the beginning of this month and they are 3 lb weights. I do a high intensity short circuit training where it's mostly focused on my core but I do boxing with the weights and I have found this to be suitable enough for me. I don't want to be ripped, just lean & tone. I waited until a little over 2 months to start. The worst thing would be to rupture or tear something because you're pushing yourself too fast. Best of Luck!

    Strength training?

Yoga is an awesome form of strength training. I work out like crazy like walking, jogging, calistetics, ankle and wrist weight exercises, medicine ball and I just started yoga a few days ago. Let me tell you that the yoga has gotten me the most sore out of all the exercises. I felt every single muscle in my body hurt later that day. It was also too the most relaxing form of exercise. My daughter and I walked 4 miles and then I let her play at the park while I did yoga in the shade. I LOVED IT! I'm planning to do it again today. Go on YouTube and theres several workouts you can stream from your phone. You hold he positions so you're able to pause your phone between moves. ~Leticia **HW: 259**PreOp: 216**SURG: 3/21/13 **Discharged @: 221**9 weeks post op. CW: 182.6 lbs. ---ONE-DERLAND ---

    Strength training?

So I am 5 weeks post op RYN, 3 weeks post op bowel obstruction. I am ready to slowly start adding strength training but I'm a rookie... Does anyone have a suggestion where to start? Does yoga count as strength training? I don't have a gym membership and I'm not ready to get one yet.

    Exercise questions

Hi, I think that is a bit excessive too. I have been losing weight steadily for the past 2 1/2 months (still very new) as I have been losing I have gained oodles of energy. I workout about 5 times a week now but not for an hour each time. The days when I am really busy I try to do higher intensity exercise and on the weekends I do longer walks. I think you should just try and do as much as you can and you will see that you will soon feel like doing more.

    Pain in chest

You shouldnt of had the soup. Follow your doctors plan. For the first 3 days you are to be on clear liquid only. Cream of chicken soup is to heavy and you should only be sipping liquids all day long. Then when you go on full liquids which consists of protein shakes, you only drink like 2 oz at a time every hour. While sipping water or sugar drinks in between. You body hasnt heal from the operation, Remember the band is sewed to your stomach so you have stiches inside that have to heal. The pain should go away. Very importat to do what your doc says.

    Mountain (trail) biking

I would wait the 6 weeks. I started riding 2 weeks out and I can tell you the port hurts like heck and remains sore. Let the port heal properly before putting strain on the muscle that the port is attached to. Just my opinion.
  15. I have been walking briskly for about 2 months now. I have got up to 3 miles 3 times a week on a walking path. The other days only around 2 miles on a treadmill plus weight training 3-4 times a week. The past 2 weeks, I have had severe cramping in my calves and my back hurts really bad. I am 54 years old so that may have something to do with it but I feel as if I am missing something in my diet, vitamins or something. I have also stopped losing weight which has not been coming off real well anyway. I have to keep an eye on the calorie intake to be sure I get at least 800 calories a day. I have started a protien shake but the cramping is still there. Any suggestions appreciated.

    Any Crossfitters here?

I've been going to CrossFit 1-3x/week for about 2 months now - usually twice a week. I got passes for 20 classes to 2 different studios through Groupon, I'm nearing the end of my classes with the first studio. I like it a lot, I enjoy intense workouts that are more about short bursts of energy rather than endurance (e.g. running). I think I'll keep it up after my Groupon discount passes are over. It's pretty brutal though, I always go to the Saturday morning class and then I'm basically a vegetable for the rest of the day. Today my boyfriend commented that my arms hang half-bent in front of my body - took me a second to realize I have to forcibly straighten my arms thanks to the 200 ring rows I did earlier this morning.

    Burping/ Water

holy cow - my personal opinion is that your body is telling you that you're doing too much! At my post op today, I was told no exercise (other than short walks) for a month post op because the stomach is still very swollen. not sure mowing the grass when you're 1 1/2 weeks post op is a good idea, but I'm glad that you're feeling well enough to do so....but be careful, ok?

    Cardio or Strength

Gotta do both! Your cardio sound awesome! Have you thought of running 20, Bowflex 20, run again for 20? Sometimes I split my cardio like that just for something different to do. You have already made the exercise commitment, so I'll bet it will be easy for you to sneak in some weights a few times a week. You will be SO happy you are lifting!!! DO IT!!! DO IT!!!! DO IT!!!!

    Eating for weight training/Cardio

brickgirl - i understand what your saying...i had to have an unfil because i could no longer get enough calories in; specifically complex carbs to fuel myself for workouts. i just didn't sign up for this to drink my meals, nor eat them after they got cold - i also noticed, as did you...my scale did NOT move when i was barely getting in 1000 calories. literally 3 days after my first unfil (had 2 / and recently had a small increase) the scale became a friend again. i really believe one has to play around w/calories - fill qty, along with your activity. hope it all works out!!

    Exercise Outrage

Last Monday my husband bought bikes for both of us to ride with my daughter, who already has a bike. We had riden together everyday with the exception of last night. He and my daughter rode our usual route and I told him that I wanted to just ride up and down the street to practice turning and braking...even though I have been riding for a week it has been approximately 20 years since I had riden a bike. I was riding up and down the street and then heard "d**n look at that fata** on the bike" from a group of pre-teens sitting on their own bikes on across street. I was angry, very angry...a few minutes later my husband and daughter came around the corner and he instantly knew something was wrong. That night I told him I did not want to ride again. I know kids, heck even adults say mean even cruel things. They were old even to know better....but I will not let them win. I have dealt with the stares and the whispers for too long. I am trying to make a bether life for me and my family. I will get back on my bike tonight and ride.

    best thing for muscle soreness?

Sombra, a topical analgesic you can buy on Amazon works great and doesn't stink forever like Ben Gay. Stretching is also very important. Gonna look up the foam roller info for myself too. pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2; 5 month post-op 262.6; 6 month post-op 253.2

    upper arm workouts?????

Like the rest of your body the biggest visual change will come from simple fat reduction. Many women first notice upper body definition as a result of weight loss, its the first place it becomes obvious. So good eating and loads of cardio to shift the fat are your first line of defence. Light dumbell toning exercises (high reps, lowish weight) will tone and maintain lean muscle. However, if you have significant loose skin (bat wings) then actually building some muscle will help to fill it out - only marginally though, women dont tend to gain lots of muscle no matter what they do. But if building muscle is what you want then you need to change the focus to heavy weight and low reps. Stuff like drawing up a chair, or backing up to a waist high rail (like a fence) putting your feet out in front of you and doing dips. Go RIGHT DOWN into the dip and have your legs as far away from you as you can handle, so that you work the muscle to failure within a couple of reps. You can adjust difficulty by making it easy (knees bent, feet right in front of you, legs taking weight) to super difficult) legs straight out in front of you, unbent knees, all weight taken through the arms. Work the muscle to the point where it fails a couple of times a week - if you can do 12 reps, its time to make it harder. Do the same with push ups to attack the arms from different angles. And arms always look nice with a little bit of shoulder definition which you can achieve with side lateral dumbell raises, heavy heavy dumbells, so you can only do a few reps. It depends what your goal is and how you want to look. But some loose skin unfortunately is a result of weight loss and only surgery can remove it.

    The date is set

Well insurance let me down. I wasted 6 weeks but when I called the doctor's office they have had a cancellation this Friday, June 9th and I'm taking it! Yippee! I am so excited and scared at the same time. I can't think of anything else. David is being a poop about it........... it's all about the money, not my health or happiness. I won't let it get me down. I'm doing this for me and me alone. I have to be there at 8 a.m. and it should be finished and out of there by noon. Wow! It's really going to happen. I have wished for this for years and now that it's here, I can't believe it.
  24. Manda 87 amen to that. Couple years ago my office was moved from one end of the building to the other. And by building I mean 3 enormous factories that were connected to make one collosal building. I sat as far away from the cafe as you could get. After that move I started buying a breakfast sandwich at Dunkin Donuts every day; which was also pretty expensive. I started buying low fat breakfast sandiches by weight watchers and lost probably 10 pounds from that alone.

    Tanning and Swimming

I went to the tanning bed the day I got out of the hospital. I was very careful in getting in and out of the bed. Swimming I would wait about six weeks of surgery date or better yet, refer to your doc. Good luck to you!
