  1. I'd rather have scars than fat. There are some posts on here with pictures of the scars - you can do a search for them. Maybe that'll help you some. I too had a revision on my port (it flipped) and my scar is healing now and looks kinda weird. I'm hoping over time it'll look better. It is in my left chest/breast area, but you can't see it even if I am wearing a bra or swimsuit. Scars are no biggie.
  2. Just thought I would say HI. I Live in Australia and I had a lapband done nealry two years ago. I have had no luck with my band. I have only lost 10kg in this time. I am finding my band is either to tight and I vomit all the time or too loose and I am hungry and eating lagre meals. I went to see another surgeon for a second opinion and he wants to take my band out and do a gastric bypass. I was asking about the sleeve but he wont do one because I have had the band. He said that the band leves too much scar tissue and the chance of a leak is really high. Wow I have never even thought of having a bypass was a bit of a shock to me. Which I dont really know why because a sleeve is something pretty major. So I would love some imput or advice about he bypass good or bad thanks.
  3. It has been a long time since I last posted. It is now 2017 & Im still suffering from reflux. Just had an EGD which shows esophagitis & reflux issues. I recently retired & now am only covered by Champ va insurance. My doctor is recommending surgery again & her office just called & said my insurance approved it. I am scheduled 7/11. I am still worried that once I have this done Champ va will try not to pay it since I didn't go through the weight loss protocol back in 2012 when I went to Mexico. I need the revision for reflux, not weight loss. I am so tired of everything I eat coming back up, also I'm not able to digest salad, veggies or fruit. Also lactose intolerant since my sleeve. I really hope this works.. I have kept my weight off, I'm 125lbs..
  4. How soon did you have these issues after your surgery? I started having these issues about 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery which was 2 years ago. I did get a phone call from the surgery cordinater last week. He said my case was discussed at a meeting with my doctor & she was going to contact the insurance company to discuss my case! So I am hoping that I will be able to have it done. How are you feeling after your revision? Please keep me updated on your progress!
  5. I just got the approval for my revision and I'm set for August 1st. I have a thread posted here where I'm going to document my whole story and experience. I have bad reflux, a stricture that won't heal and keeps getting more swollen and inflamed, and my esophagus is eroding at the site of the stricture. They told me if I don't revise soon I'm looking at Barret's which will eventually lead to esophageal cancer. My insurance company okay'd the surgery right away because my doctor is extremely worried about the future health of my esophagus. Oh, and the fact that I haven't been able to eat sold food since my sleeve in 2012. I'm kind of a rare case I guess but I'm Iron, Vitamin D and Protein deficient and I can't stay hydrated enough to keep from having bad kidney infections. Hopefully the surgery will go well for me and finally allow the stricture to heal, I can't wait to eat real food again! Keep us updated, I'm hoping your insurance company will approve your surgery and I definitely know how reflux feels. Good luck!!
  6. Good luck with your upcoming gastric bypass!! I hope you’re working on resolving any emotional eating issues as the new surgery won’t prevent you from eating poorly or overeating. It is also common to lose less weight with a revision versus an original surgery. But if you follow recommendations to eat dense protein first then non-starchy vegetables, and to avoid sugar, processed food, simple carbs, alcohol, and liquid calories, you should be successful. This new way of eating needs to be a long term lifestyle change, and not just until you reach your goal weight. You can do this!
  7. I had the revision on July 10th for the same reasons. High weight before sleeve in July 2014 was 300, lowest after sleeve was 210 and then I regained 40+ and couldn’t get it off. Was 250 when revision was done, weight loss has been kinda slow but they said it would be. Stalled at week three for over three weeks but scale is finally moving again. Down 23 pounds so far. Best thing is my restriction is great, can’t even finish a quarter cup of protein most of the time. I’m glad I had it done, wish I would have gone with the bypass to begin with. Good luck to you.
  8. Please, do your research *before* you get the band. You'll be much more satisfied with your decision and your band and be in a better position to work with your band. It absolutely amazes me how many people get banded and then are surprised/stunned/disappointed/angry that they are not magically transported to the land of 'skinny' where they are never hungry again. You may not have had your surgery yet, but read through the posts on the postop lap band board. Not only will you be better informed, but you won't be one of those people who regrets their surgery a week after they've had it. When you get your band, you will probably notice a lack of hunger for a few days (maybe not) because your stomach is still dealing with the trauma of surgery, but when that swelling goes down...and until your first fill...you will be hungry if you stick to the doctor's diet recommendations. It just is what it is. You'll most likely be hungry until your second or third fill or even longer depending on your doctor's policies regarding fills. This is not a bypass. You will not magically drop 50 pounds in a matter of weeks without doing anything. Our weight is about calories in/calories out (assuming you have no medical conditions that would affect this such as thyroid issues). You either have to decrease your calories, expend more (through exercise) or a combination of both. Be informed. Let this decision be something you *do*...not something that just happens to you. .

    Definately Unhappy....

NeeCee, that sounds pretty much like USA protocol. Did you go all the way up to 2cc's or did you mean .2cc's. Usually, in the US they will give you .5cc's to begin with & go up in .2cc increments. Don't all jump on me if that's not been your experience; it was what I was told by Dory @ LIBariatrics. Also, FYI, she's the one who did aftercare for the celebrity from NY Mag, etc. Dateline is coming to next week's support group. They already filmed her port revision & major plastic surgery in TJ; I can't wait to go the support group. Sorry to veer so much off the topic, just wanted to tell you all where I heard the protocol info. I think a lot of it depends on whether they use fluoro or not. The do tend to be more conservative when it's not used.

    Here we go again

My daughter had gastric bypass surgery done 3 years ago, and although she has lost 100 lbs. she is not feeling good most of the time. If she isn't pooping she is throwing up. She says she wouldn't do it again even for the weight loss. It is an extremely invasive surgery where they cut the intestines and a lot of things can go wrong. Lap banding is minimally invasive and much, much safer, but in the long run it can cost a lot of money for insurance companies because of the costs of the fills after the surgery and the follow-ups. My daughter only had to follow-up twice in a whole year. I am never going to get gastric bypass. My dr. vetoed it right off the bat because the danger, but completely approves of lap banding. Don't let insurance talk you into something you may regret and can never, ever change for your whole life. If you are unhappy with the banding you always know deep down it is reversible. This perogative does not exist for gastric bypass patients. They are stuck with the consequences for life. My daughter is so affected by this she has been depressed for 3 years. Anyway don't give in.

    Here we go again

Well, I was verbally told that they approved me for the lap band surgery but the doctor wouldn't set the date until they had the letter in their hand. Well I got the letter today and they approved me for the Gastric Bypass not lap band. Guess I have to wait until Monday to see next steps I have to jump through. I'm so tired of this crap and so emotionally shot.

    Here we go again

They won't talk me into the gastric bypass....but it is hard to think about leaving this doctor as my partner is a OR nurse and works with him on a lot of other surgeries. I've had two surgeries with him in the past and he is an excellent surgeon and he does lap bands, just prefers the gastric bypass. I'm sure he'll try to talk me into the gastric but it ain't happening.

    Here we go again

My surgeon does both the lap band and the gastric bypass and actually prefers the bypass over the lap band. So having him state that I have greater risk on the RNY is probably not going to happen. However, I have stated numerous times that I will not have any surgery if the only one I can have is the gastric bypass. I do not want that surgery and won't have it. I've got a call into the doctor's office waiting for them on Monday. This is such an emotional roller coaster and I'm definitely tired.
  14. Thanks, Em. 100+ pounds is a scary number -- a little overwhelming. Makes me want to cry sometimes. I guess the RNY has appeal because of the speedier weight loss. I'm looking to do WLS so I can have quality of life. Losing weight won't help me if I end up being sick all the time, which can happen. My sister has a friend who has been nauseous everyday of her life since she had her bypass 4 years ago. She says that if she had known then what she knows now, she'd rather be fat. Really gives me something to think about.

    April 2014 sleevers

I am scheduled for April 10th! Band to Sleeve revision

    Miss my advil!

I thought that was only for Gastric Bypass. I could be wrong of course.
  17. First, congratulations on surviving breast cancer! Secondly, I was sleeved December 4th, no dumping for me however I do have terrible GERD. There's no malabsortion srestriction but I do keep up on my Vitamins, vitamins are important!! Its a "tool" I still make the daily decisions however best choise I ever made. Im on ppi for gerd, I think if that doesn't correct itself I'll probably have to have the revision to bypass. I don't know the waiting period, does anyone else know? Good luck!!! Thank you in advance :-)
  18. I'm really struggling (pre-op) to comply with the prescribed low carb high protein diet I've been given and am concerned about how I will do this long term. I have cut out all desserts, rice, pasta, but still am struggling. I do not eat a lot of proteins so am used to having a lot of beans. I have a history of kidney infections and stones so am worried about having so much protein. My oncologist's office told me to keep animal protein's to 14 oz per week to prevent cancer. I have always heard high fat diets cause heart disease and that vegetables, fruits and fiber are healthy. So all this seems counterintuitive. I know if I go with the gastric bypass proteins and fats are not absorbed as well so can understand having more of them and eating protein first but just can't get my head around why it is necessary or desirable to limit healthy carbs. Is it the calories or fear they set up cravings? I haven't been able to get a clear explanation from my center's nut.
  19. I'm concerned as well. Had band removed 3/16. Conversion to bypass scheduled for June 7, I see the success of others, and that gives me hope. I know I wasn't losing with the band...and I know I wasn't losing before the band. All I can do is give it my best effort.

    Re-sleeve or revision

It would depend on why you need the revision, I think.
  22. I just wanted to update everyone! This has happened so much better and faster than I (or anyone in my world) ever expected . I had my sleeve done on October 16, 2012. I was low BMI but hypothyroid so this should have taken longer but I'm so close to goal that I can taste it. I started at 194 with a goal of 115. My goal has since been revised to 120-125 as I've taken into account my short curvy body type. That said, as of this morning I weigh 134.8... I need to reach 128 to be a normal BMI and I know I'm almost there! I've posted a pic showing me today as well as my highest weight which was right before my Hypothyroidism was diagnosed (first pic) and my weight a few months before surgery (middle pic).
  23. I don't have the answers to all, but I'll answer what I can. 1) Do you get dumping syndrome with the sleeve? In theory no, but some people claim to have had it. I never have experienced dumping. Dumping syndrome is the movement of food too fast from the stomach to the intestines. The pyloric valve, located between the stomach and small intestine regulates the movement of food and is still in place after being sleeved. It is bypassed in Gastric Bypass surgery, so dumping is something GB patients have to be aware of. 2) Does the sleeve make osteoporosis worse? Can't answer that one. 3) What do you take for chronic pain (like arthritis or back pain) that works? For a month or so post-op, I was told to take Tylenol for pain and to avoid NSAID based pain relievers. I've never had any problems taking any kind of over the counter pain reliever - aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, Excedrin, Tylenol. I do not take any prescription pain meds. 4) Do you suffer from Vitamin or mineral deficiency or poor nutrition from stomach being smaller? It's possible, if I were to eat unhealthy foods, but I take a Multivitamin supplement as well. I had to make a conscious decision to make good food choices post-op, not only to lose the weight, but to develop good eating habits once my sleeve had healed and I could hold more food. I started eating the diet my doc recommended right after surgery. At first, I could only hold 1/2 cup of food per meal, so I had to make the right food choices. At 6 months, I could hold a little more, and at 1 year, I could hold even more at each meal. That's why it's important to get into the habit of good eating habits. Eventually my sleeve healed and I could tolerate ANY food. It was up to me to make the right choices. And I can honestly say, everything I went through was worth it. VSG gave me a 2nd chance on life. I only regret waiting till I hit rock bottom before realizing I needed the help of VSG surgery to lose the weight. Control what you can, cope with what you can't, and concentrate on what really counts in your life. Know what matters and never give up on it.
  24. Hi there! I've been reading quite a bit here and other places about revising from band to sleeve. Here's my backstory: I got the realize band in 2009 - self pay unfortunately, due to a stupid anti obesity clause with my insurance policy at the time. I was relatively successful - my starting weight was 335 and I got down exactly 100 pounds over the next 2 years. I experienced regain of 45 pounds after a car accident in late 2013 and another injury a few months later. I've worked hard since then and am about 5 pounds away from my original low weight (and plan on surpassing that). The thing is, the whole time I've had the band, I've been a chronic vomiter, I get stuck ALL THE TIME (especially when I eat things I'm SUPPOSED to eat) no matter what and I never really feel full or satisfied, just uncomfortable and stuck. I always blamed myself and thought it just must be normal. But the more I read now, the more I realize that life doesn't have to be like this! I've been asked if I'd ever consider getting it removed and even the thought starts to hurl me into a panic. "I could NEVER get it removed!! I'll gain all the weight back and more and get diabetes again and a fatty liver and increase my depression and anxiety... NEVER!!" Plus I spent $25,000 on this dang thing!! But I hadn't thought much about a revision until the past couple months. The insurance I have now covers WLS. One question I have though is do you think they'd cover a revision? Especially if the band was self pay? Also, my BMI is now under 40 (as of today it's 37.6)... my comorbidities have pretty much gone away, aside from slightly high cholesterol and I just found out I have 2 herniated discs (definitely related to obesity. I'm only 35, for crying out loud!) would they even ok it based on that stuff. I know no one here can say for sure. Just looking to see if any of you have had any experience with a similar situation. Thanks in advance! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
