  1. Oh my! I started doing kettle bells and am doing them 4 days a week with recovery workouts in between. I use either a 15 or 20lb KB depending on the move. In two weeks, I've suddenly gone up 4 lbs. NO CHANGE in my diet. In my 'pms' week and usually experience maybe a 1-2lb gain but it is quickly lost. But 4lbs?? Ugh. Have had a stressful week (2 elderly dogs had to be euthanized yesterday. Been preparing for a week).. No inches gained or lost. Any thoughts?? Think it's temporary? Just in that flux between building muscle and losing extra fat? Btw, I am 10 months out, down to 176 (was 172) from 285.

    Steroids, obesity, and WLS

the reason I got a sleeve was so that I could continue steroids if and when I need them. I have had my sleeve for 10 years. I have fairly well controlled asthma, with the use of inhaled steroids 365 days a year and when I get sick,.. bronchitis or anything else that might hit my lungs hard, antibiotics and oral steroids usually with decadron injection to start it out. I end up on fairly high doses 60 mg for a week then descending doses for 2 to 3 weeks to insure breathing.... at least once or twice a year. I get ravenously hungry. I gain some weight. Then I lose it over the next couple months. It is a pain in the butt. But I do really well, as far as I am concerned. My sleeve has handled the steroid use. And I am still kicking at 64 years old.

Dropped 3 pants size in 2 months

I was shocked. Before my massive weight gain I was 270lbs. Avg pant size 38. I started to develop sleep apnea which really got bad over time. When I finally got checked it was in the severe stage 65 episodes a minute. by time I was diagnosed I was 380lbs and pants size 52 (I like them loose). All this happened within 3 years. I had about 10 new pants I havent wore since weight gain. Im 10 weeks in, and now im at 287lbs. Im still very big, but the weight loss didnt hit me until I didnt have any clean pants (havent done laundry... I work 2 jobs.. dont judge im not lazy..lol). I had to attempt to try one of these pants on since I had a party to go to and all stores were closed. I jumped into a size 44 and it was still too big. I believe im currently a size 40 I jist havent checked. Its summer I been wearing shorts all summer and surgery was in jun. So we will see. Sorry for long story im just really happy with my surgery getting to sizes I havent seen in years.

    Beginning week 3

Around week three I spent 10 days jumping up and down between 259-261. Finally started losing again, about a pound a week, then in the last 5 days suddenly lost 3 pounds. I didn't even chart it at first because I thought it was a fluke, but woke io this morning and still gone. Keeping my fingers crossed now. I think this uneven weight loss and stalls is the most frustrating part of the whole experience, but the big picture is I am the lowest weight I have been in 10 years!

    Too Uncoordinated To Dance

I hear you on that one as I just got Zumba and am struggling! I'm gonna persevere a bit longer, but I'm going to keep doing my Caribbean Workouts with Shelly McDonald. I like the Step workouts... you need a lot less co-ordination than with Zumba! I'm gonna go back to my '10 Minute Solution - Ultimate Kettleball Fat Burner' DVD once I'm a bit more recovered (only 4 weeks out at the mo). Good luck and I'll be interested to hear other people's suggestions.

    Warrior or whimp?

I soooo agree with both of you!!!! I feel like I gained 10 pounds overnight....everything I put on seems to stick and rub...... Even the earrings I put on seem to "hurt"....
  8. This might not help, but I could not afford a band either. But my husband told me that I was always good at getting new credit cards. We were way in debt, but I tried anyway and the credit union approved me for another $8,000. It sounds insane to accept that loan, but my band is paying for itself. If the credit union refused me, I'd have written checks in advance to a bunch of cheesy quick-cash places. I'd have pawned all my jewelry, cashed in all my change. I was dying. There was no choice. In order to pay for my band I made a couple sacrifices. I used to get manicures 2ce a month. No more. And I cancelled our Arrowhead Water delivery and bought a $20.00 Britta filter. My food bill is crazy now. I don't pick out anything for myself. My meals are whatever food my husband doesn't finish. I was spending tons on Taco Bell, Jack in The Box, etc. Fast food 5-10 times a week. Now fast food sounds gross to me. After the surgery all I wanted was liquids cuz I was afraid to eat anything else. Once they allowed me real foods, my body craved healthy stuff. Like my body knows it needs Protein. I was craving tomatoes and asparagus. My credit card payment is $130.00 a month. I found ways to come up with the cash. It's worth every red cent. I have dual coverage. I have Blue Shield through my work and Health Plan of Nevada through my husband's. Both approved the bypass, neither approved the band. I could have appealed it, but I wanted to start living right this second. Screw the insurance companies. As far as this new debt, hell, the credit union shouldn't have given me the money cuz I was behind on my mortgage with them, so let them try to repo my band!
  9. I am nearly 10 weeks out...it does get easier. Hang in there! You can do it!

Mistakes women make at the gym

I had my 8 week nursing assessment at the gym today. I have avoiding losing weight because I'm preop and borderline BMI for insurance to approve. I have been working out with pretty heavy weights 3-4 times a week and meeting with a trainer once a week. I have intentionally not done a lot of cardio. Today -- weight was the same as last time (intentional) but my body fat % was down 4% and my lean muscle mass was up 10 pounds!!! Woot! Imagine how great my numbers are going to be when I get the food under control!!!! Next Monday can't come fast enough.

Does anyone use a Wii Fit??

I want the my fitness coach to. I homeschool all three of my kids, so having the ability to steal 10-15 minutes here and there for a workout is much easier than finding an hour or two during the day...
  13. I work out in the morning right after a light Breakfast. If I don't do it then, ill find excuses throughout the day. I'm not a morning person either so I set my alarm early enough for me to get up and relax a half hour before I start. I'm a nurse too, but my shifts are usually 9-10 hours and they exhaust me, so I can only imagine how hard it is for y'all to make yourself do it. My feet, legs, and back KILL me and i have to force myself to exercise. Gone are the days I volunteered for double 16 hour shifts lol. Not worth it!
  14. Hi there! I was just wondering how many other folks on here are into yoga. Despite being overweight for a long time in my life, I've been doing yoga for over 10 years. I taught modified yoga classes to other overweight folks for a while to show that yoga can be done by all body styles, even people with very limited mobility, as long as the pose is modified enough. Anyhoo, I was curious if there is anyone else around here? My goal is to eventually heal myself enough and become healthy enough to become a yoga teacher as a side career. It's probably my favorite form of exercise.

    Heparin Shots

I had my surgery on 05/10 and my doc also has me on heprin for 10 days. I asked if i can stop they told me no. I also have bruises and am running out of places to inject the stuff and what was once a painful necessary task is now turning to be very sore and hard to stick myself. My mom who had the same doc, stopped doing them on her second week of them and was fine. I guess you either have to decide better safe then sorry? But I am glad to hear that i am not the only one experienceing these stupid things...LOL

How hard did you work out after?

Here is roughly my activity plan post op. My starting weight was 360 and my current weight is 180 with roughly at 16% body fat. Week 1-6 : walking up to 3x a day. Started walking a block first day home and progressed to 1-2 hour walks with my dog. I did one hike @ week 3, but I serious regret doing it because it nearly sent me to er from dehydration. Month 1-4: more walking and ellyptical for up to 45 min. Month 5-7: started running on my treadmill. Worked up to 20 miles a week. Did different types of running like distance, speed and HIIT every week. I was able to do a 18 minute 5 k and a 37 minute 10 k at my fastest. I averaged 22 minute 5 k and 55 min 10 k. Rarely did more then 10 k in a single run, but z few times did 15-20 miles. Long endurance running is not really my interest. All the power to those that enjoy running 1/2 marathons and marathons. Month 8-14: personal training cross fit 2x a week, a video series called "you are your own gym" (completed 2x from beginner to advanced). Continued to do some 5k and 10 k running, but focus switched to sprinting shorter distances up to 1 mile at a time. My best mile time is 4:55. I average 5:30 mile when I run for time now. Started my first weight training at this time. Month 9-18: open gym cross fit 5-6 days a week. Started with 3x a week and now do 5-6x a week. I do Olympic and power lifting daily and also a high intensity metabolic conditioning workout that pushes you to the wall like nothing else. These types of workouts keep me fit and mentally interested. There is also the social aspect of working out with friends on a daily basis that I enjoy. It is how I socialize currently. You can see my activity levels are definitely following a progressive pattern. This is the ideal way to do it, to grow a little every day by doing more and becoming more skilled. The reason why I started cross fit at month 8 is because pure cardio was wasting away my muscles. That simply would not do for a guy of my age. Today I am not only at my ideal weight, but have an athletic body fat percentage and build. It was not until I started open gym at cross fit that I was able to achieve this. Listen to your body and fuel it with the right food choices, Water and supplementation. The sky and your mind is the limit.
  17. I'm a long, long time lurker, love how you help each other and maybe me. I've had my band 4 years. Made my goal, and have lost 10 pounds more. Had a fill in Jan. 08, but by August saw my weight was starting to creep up (6 pounds) and had a fill (total of 5 in 4 years). Now I feel my band is perfect, except for one little problem. At night, after being asleep for 5 or 6 hours (around 3 AM usually after going to bed at 10 PM) I have stomach juice slipping up into my mouth, wakes me up, I cough, spit, go back to sleep and then a few hours later, do it again. I've tried not drinking fluids after 7, not eating after 7, drinking tea or hot water before bed, tums, and nothing seems to work well. I know I could call the DR and get an unfil for $140, but to be honest, this level seems to work well --weight is back off, not hungry, everything else is fine. Any idea on how to stop the nightly ooze??

    What am I doing wrong?

I am just shy of my one month mark and have been stalled almost 3 weeks. I lost 19 before surgery and so far only 11 since. I put this same question out there a couple weeks ago. What just about everyone said is that my body has to catch up to the 30 lbs lost. I get that truly but am getting frustrated. I all but double my Fitbit daily step count and ride my recumbent bike about 30 min a day at a fairly quick pace. I'd like to go faster but know I've got a lot of healing go do yet so Im practicing safely. I go for second post op check Weds so I will ask about that and also abou why I am so doggone cold all the time! Best of luck to you and the rest of us who keep trying.

    Ramblings from week one

Jodie I didn't sleep well until about day 10. My tummy is still tender and I'm 16 days out so it's hard for me to get comfortable. You will feel better once u get some good protein in you. Get some soup and blend it up if u r allowed to at this point. Protein drinks (isopure) and shakes will also help. 22 pounds is fantastic! Good luck!!

  23. I have created the Lap-band Blueprint, hopefully this will help you as well. The band was designed to eat a normal meal. A normal meal means you eat a smaller meal without side effects. If you are properly adjusted you can eat without experiencing Productive Burping or much sliming. · Learn to chew your food to liquid form. Chewing your food to liquid form will reduce the amount of productive burps; this will also help reduce the sliming effect as well. · Avoid Soft Food Syndrome. If you are eating softer foods because it is easier, you have no way of knowing if you are properly adjusted. Eating softer foods allows you eat more and can halt your weight loss altogether. · Eat your Protein first. Eating protein first ensures you are getting enough protein to keep your energy levels up. · Don’t be so dependent on the band. Some patients are expecting the band to be their “Food Police”. Taking responsibility for what you are eating and how you are eating will take away the disappointed feeling. · The band is tighter in the morning. There is no scientific reason why the band is tighter in the morning. Just because the band is tight in the morning is no excuse to skip a meal. Mix up a Protein shake to start your day. · Being too tight serves no good purpose. If the band is too tight and you are experiencing PB after PB this will not aid in the weight loss efforts. Also having a band that is too tight could result in a slip; which could result in another surgery. · The band is not properly adjusted. You are wide open and can eat anything you want, this is a sign you are not properly adjusted. Make an appointment with your surgeon to get another fill. · Tweaking your band. It could be as simple as .01 CC to get you to your sweet spot. Don’t think you have to have a full 1.0 CC to be properly adjusted. · Don’t compare yourself to others. Just because someone has reached their sweet spot with 2.50 CC’s doesn’t mean you are going to reach your sweet spot with the same amount of fill. There are too many different size bands on the market and the person you are comparing your fill to might not even have the same band as you do. · Don’t deprive yourself. Eat what you like in moderation. The more processed the food the easier it is to eat with the band; it also means more calories. Read your labels if a serving size is 15 chips then only eat 15 chips not the whole bag. Keep in touch with your surgeon so he/she knows what is going on. If you are not following up with your surgeon they can’t get you to your sweet spot. Don’t feel bad if you have not lost any weight since your last visit; your surgeon will not yell at you. Especially if you keep a food diary and exercise diary; this will aid your surgeon to help you stay on track. If you are newly post-op take advantage of this time to really learn how to chew your food; trust me you will “Thank” yourself down the road. If you are properly adjusted; you will have to chew your food to liquid form; otherwise you will be experiencing productive burping and sliming. This leads to frustration and could possibly lead you to soft food syndrome which will halt your weight loss efforts. You have worked so hard to have the surgery and expected to have amazing results. It is possible if you work with your band as opposed to working against it. Don’t think of this as being another diet; think of this as being a “Lifestyle”. If you watch skinny fit people eat you will see they still allow themselves treats; you should be no different. Remember you had surgery on your stomach not your brain. It will be hard at times and you might make poor choices. Getting back on the band-wagon is easy to do. Go back to the band basics and you will see the results you want and deserve.

    runners knee (maybe)

Its strange. I had a lot of trouble with this knee issue over last few days (quite painful at times), when just doing normal stuff. Then I did a new sprint run variation yesterday afternoon (10 segments of 3 min increments one after another (1 min 6.5 mph, 1 min 7.5 mph and 1 min 8.5 mph)) before moving onto a body weight strength workout (about an hour). My knee kind of whined a little on the first 3 min segment and then started feeling better as I did more segments. By the time I finished the running, knee felt strong as ever and no more lock ups or other knee annoyances when doing normal things non exercise related; in other words, just walking around. Weird huh? Do you think my knee was just slightly out of alignment and the running fixed it? Maybe loose cartilage moved so not rubbing. I hope it stays pain free! I really enjoy running (fast) and hope my knees last many more years.
  25. I am 5 days into the liquid diet before the second screening. I have an ugly day tomorrow that includes a 6 mile walk and being away from my house for 10 hours. Panicking on how to stay on track. Did they go through everyday of the food diary at the second visit?
