Hello! Just a short story of how I got here! 8/2012, I underwent the Gastric Sleeve. I went from 230 lbs to 140 lbs. I had a hiatal hernia repair during this surgery in 2012 and again in 2021. Every since I had the sleeve in 2012, I have had reflux. Within the last few years, it has increased, severely. It did a little better when I had the hernia repair in 2021. However the hernia has returned and the GERD is even worse. I wake up quite often gagging on stomach acid. Sometimes waiting to go to bed three hours after my last meal/snack, will help SOMETIMES. A lot of times, I have to sleep sitting up. I am taking Protonix 40 MG twice a day for many many years. If I skip a dose, I regret it! I, unfortunately, have gained quite a bit of my weight back. Once I started gaining, the front desk clerk at my Bariatric doc's office told me I didn't need to come back. I kind of felt like I got kicked out of the program!! So it just got worse after that. Because of the severe GERD I am having, I bit the bullet and went back to see my bariatric doctor. I was ashamed because I lost 90 pounds after my surgery but have gained 60 of it back. He didn't seem to say much about that. However, he suggested that the best way to get the GERD under control was to revise my surgery from the Sleeve to the Bypass. I have concerns! I am worried about the diet and will I screw up again? I am worried about mal absorption, dumping syndrome and all the other complications that can come from the Gastric Bypass. I worry about how the vitamins will taste (silly I know, but if things taste nasty, I have a hard time eating/drinking). What if I can't stick with it like I did the Sleeve? This is a permanent surgery! I am scared but I feel like it is necessary to relieve me of this terrible GERD. I could end up with Barrett's Esophagus and worse, cancer of the esophagus. Would really appreciate outlooks and suggestions! Thanks in Advance, Michelle

Stomach feels bigger and more bloated than before
Arabesque replied to Brittneykdelacruz's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
You may still have swelling & strained muscles. They pump you full of fluids & gas & prod & poke you internally during the surgery. And of course the inflammation swelling from the actual surgery on your tummy like any wound. I had a sort of general tenderness & found anything tight on my waist uncomfortable for a couple of weeks. I used to roll down the waist of my pants so they sat on my hips & often gently rested my hand on my tummy under my pants. It was sort of comforting like I was protecting it. It will pass. Just give yourself time to heal & recover. -
Tins of beans, tomatoes, chick peas, lentils, vegetables & fish, dried barley, etc. Keep powdered stock on hand too. You’ll get protein from the beans, chick peas, barley & lentils. I always have frozen vegetables on hand too just in case & keep rotating out & using frozen mince, chicken thighs, diced beef, etc. & freezing fresh packs. I can shop from my pantry & freezer for a couple of weeks.

Pre-op is 2 weeks of liquid diet (4 protein shakes a day) Post op Day 1-2 clear liquids (60g protein goal) Day 3-5 clear liquids + 2 protein shakes (minimum 60g protein daily going forward) Day 6-13 full liquids Day 14-21 puree Day 22-29 soft foods Day 30+ healthy solid food Sent from my Pixel 6 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I’ve been doing really well… until last night. My right side is suddenly so painful, but only when standing and walking. It’s so bad that I don’t know if I can even manage to shower tonight. I have this persistent heaviness and tugging sensation, and while I understand why, it’s quite painful. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Me too! I rotate between beans the ricotta bake. I am 4 1/2 weeks out.

Ooh you mean within 4 weeks. Ooh okay. I thought you meant overall. I was like ummmm I think that’s a bit conservative.
-
No, as a general guideline I suppose. She said most lose more than that but as a general guideline that amount seems to be the average lost in 4 weeks post op (Im guessing for lower BMI ppl probably but who knows). Of course each person is different.

Marijuana Use and Nausea
Sleeve_Me_Alone replied to stewy56's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Cannabis hyperemesis syndrome is a thing. Likely has nothing to do with your surgery, just your use. It often starts with nausea and grows into recurrent vomiting. Mode of delivery doesn't matter, the only thing that resolves it is cutting it out. If you go a week without and the nausea resolves, you'll have your answer. -
Well apparently talking about it set things off because i got a notification of a decent amount of work next week... LMAO hahaha.

Marijuana Use and Nausea
FutureSylph replied to stewy56's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It might be the vaping that's causing the nausea. If you're unwilling to give up cannabis for more than a week, you could try edibles instead and see if that helps. -
Interesting. I am almost at week 4 and the only taste change i have had is certain drinks i dont like anymore.

It's been since about week 3 roughly. Meats are particularly gross smelling and I'm struggling to eat a reasonable amount of anything. I know it's hormonal but I just want to know if things will get easier. X Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank you for responding [emoji4]. I have spoken to my doctor and he said that I've obviously responded extremely well to the surgery!! I have to wait until next week to speak to my nutritionist. I'm really hoping that it will go away. Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app

Marijuana Use and Nausea

Why stop at a week? Keep going! I agree, drugs are a bad idea post weight loss surgery 😊 -
Hummm. Never heard of that. I don’t recall how many weeks I was when I was on purées though. Could’ve been around the same time frame.
-
I can’t have the sauce until week 8 🙄 the dietician won’t approve Alfredo substitute either. So I wait. It’s literally saved in my phone for when I can have it 👌

I had gastric bypass in Oct 2019, within the last 6 months (or so), I have been vaping THC pretty regularly. Slowly, I've had nausea feelings everyday. Some days worse than others (like today). At first I thought I'll just vape some more and this will take care of my nausea (like cancer patients will do for pain and nausea). Well, the nausea seems to be getting worse and I think there is a connection (duh). Has anyone else experienced this? Do you know if THC is NOT a good thing for bariatric patients? I'm going to stop for a week and see what happens. I'll keep you updated. Stewy56

I only like mahi too. Funny thing is I used to have to make myself eat it once a week but post surgery I like it a lot more. Sorta makes me wonder if I should try other fish again.

I’m three days away from surgery and I’m so nauseous from protein shakes and broth. I’ve been doing the liver shrinking diet since May 1st and I’m just over this. I don’t even want to drink anything but water.

Hi Everyone [emoji3059] I really need some help and reassurance please. I had surgery March 24th and have since struggled. Foods taste and smell awful, I now hate meat because the smell is so revolting. I'm struggling to eat anything. Will this change? Why does everything smell so repulsive? Will my taste return to normal? I'm now 7 weeks out and feeling quite low. Hope you can help x Sent from my SM-G980F using BariatricPal mobile app

Wasn’t the first bite of beans the best thing ever? My surgery was 5/2 and now I’m having dreams of the purée stage, which comes next week. Lol

Achieving your goals and rewarding yourself
ms.sss replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
When i first started, i said I wouldn’t buy any new clothes until i was done with weight loss. It helped that I am/was a low-key-hoarder of clothes so i had a whole closet full of “skinny” clothes I could shrink into. BUT…when those clothes ran out (or just looked dated to me), i was all, eff this, im buying some new clothes that dont hang of me cuz i wanna look good. Yes, i spent on items that I would only wear for 2-3 weeks, but I looked GOOOOOD those 2-3 weeks wearing it! Lol My one really big ticket item i splurged on was plastic surgery (which i got about 14 months post op). BEST. PRESENT. EVER. If i may be so bold to suggest, if you are gonna spend enough to purchase leather goods at the price tag of a small car anyway, maybe considering plastics instead. Its the gift that keeps on giving! (or do both!) -
Its nice but BOORRRRINNGGGG! lmao. Its been like 3 weeks now without me having anything to do. before surgery i would spend most of my day out on the water on my jetski to keep busy. but still waiting for my incisions to fully heal before i go out in that water. Its not the cleanest water out there lol
