    The Maintenance Thread

The sick part of me would be happy until I was 90lbs and on a feeding tube and dead by age 40 just so I "finally looked skinny". Every day is a struggle against those thoughts to even eat the 700 calories I do get. So that in itself is a big achievement for me. The script flipped from food addiction to food aversion and now since I have a "reason" I "can't" eat more... the sick part of my head is like "oh, you CAN'T eat more because you had bypass. AWESOME! don't bother! lose more more more!" (And, yes, I do see a psychiatrist for all of this). If I could get over always seeing myself as fat, which I did when I was thin virtually my entire life, maintenance would be a much simpler path.

    Surgery Date

YES!!! If all goes well and all the hoops are jumped through, mine is November 20 also! And you are in Virginia also? Can I be nosy and ask where? I live in SW Virginia (Christiansburg) but have to go to NoVa to have my bypass done. This is great!
  3. Also I would LOVE to see threads where people who need/want revisions and don't have medical complications explain how they were able to get it done. Too often you see GERD + weight gain = revisions but not everyone develops reflux and regains. It can be either/or/none. What about the percentage of patients with no issues at all and the band/sleeve/etc just wasnt very effective on them. Or start at a very high weight with the sleeve then need to go on to the DS/SIPS. I think that could help others see that sometimes is no just about you doing everything right or wrong
  4. I asked about revision surgery on another forum and I had a similar reaction to the responses. They made me angry because I felt that they were condemning me for weight regain. I went back and realized that they weren't condemning me. They were just telling of there experience of getting back on track without surgery as the surgery is not as helpful the second time around. But it is a very touchy subject and I was extremely hurt and I did not get any answers to my question which was have you had revision surgery and what was it like. Which is a difficult question to get answered. I advise people to approach people seeking revision for weight regain with extra compassion. It is a very painful subject.
  5. I know I'm replying to an old post here, but how is everyone who had the gallbladder out and hernia repaired and the gastric bypass? I'm meeting with my surgeon on Tues Nov 12, and I'm hoping to do all at the same time. His office said they do all 3 on patients regularly.

PS: My cooked cereal contains teff, amaranth, quinoa, and slivered almonds, along with soy milk, so the oat carbs are getting somewhat balanced by higher protein grains, nuts, and soy. I would never try something like plain cream of rice. I used to have very bad reactive hypoglycemia to plain carbs in my former life, so I learned to never take carbs without protein. I shudder to think of the reaction I could have now after bypass.
  7. Hello Everyone! I now 53, I had revision done from lapband to gastric bypass 12.10.18. Thus far I have lost 100 lbs. Sad to say i wish it would stop. Lol. No major complication, now I am dealing with a lot of snagging skin, butt look like elephant legs, breast look like IV bags and arms look like a turkey neck.🙄. Health wise I feel pretty good. Wishing everyone the best of luck, please, please follow your doctor instructions.
  8. I’m 62 and will be having a gastric bypass procedure on December 16th.
  9. I had a HUGE NSV this weekend, I rode roller coasters without having to get off due to my size and without be smooshed into the restraints. I have worked at this park for several years and have only been able to ride a couple of the big coasters due to my size so I finally got to enjoy them for the first time since high school! Also, a fun perk of having gastric bypass, I don't get that stomach dropping feeling going down the big drops like before surgery! My daughter and I were running from coaster to coaster trying to get on as many as possible, I had so much fun!

    Is anyone else always Thirsty?

I dont sip. Havent since couple days post op gastric bypass. I'm thirsty too but we are basically on a keto diet after surgery. When I was on the keto diet before surgery I was always super thirsty. So I think that might be normal. Not sure on not drinking before, during, or after. I can tell when you when I didnt adhere to that rule and ate too soon after I drank, I could only fit 2 or 3 bites in because my stomach was already full. I go tomorrow to have my 6 week check up with blood draw. Have they checked your blood yet for any deficiencies?
  11. I didn't tell anyone at first because I didn't want to be judged or get some snide remarks but in reality, everyone has been so supportive. I'm an ER nurse and while my hospital doesn't do bariatric surgeries another one in town does so it's possible we could get a bariatric surgery patient. All of my coworkers are genuinely supportive and I have no problem with them asking questions. My sister got married a month ago and the rest of the bridal party was curious when I had my husband bring me chipotle (bowl with chicken, pinto beans, black beans, and cheese) after declining donuts and McDonalds. When I told them I had gastric bypass everyone was supportive and even asked questions about how I went about getting the surgery. One of the gals even said she was going to check her insurance to see if it was covered. I was so scared at first because of other peoples reactions but this surgery gave me a whole other lease on life that I wouldn't trade for the world. Each day that passes I'm even more confident in my choice to have surgery and wish I would've done it sooner. It's been hard as hell, way harder than losing weight without surgery, but I wouldn't trade how I feel now for the world.
  12. I’m 51 and having revision from band to rny November 26th.

    Changing Habits Prior to Surgery

I too am a band (2012) to bypasser (9/19), and the thing that I have been most amazed by is the need to fight the “head hunger”. I am not hungry like I used to be, so my head starts playing tricks on me, like hey you should really be eating something, don’t get too hungry. It is definitely a different lifestyle than being banded and at 6 weeks out still trying to figure it out, but good luck.
  14. It is difficult to compare the two directly as few surgeons do both, (Mitchell Roslin in NYC is the main one I can think of that actively performs both) so there a lot of variables that get in the way. The DS is indeed the most powerful procedure commonly available, but it is also the most complicated to do, which is why few surgeons offer it. It has been around since the late '80's, it is one of the procedures endorsed by the ASMBS (along with the VSG, RNY and bands) and accepted by US insurance as a mainstream WLS procedure (they can't call it "investigational" any more since Medicare started paying for it.,) The SIPS (SADI, Loop DS, and other names that it goes by,) is newer and not as well established, nor quite as standardized, as everyone is still figuring out the optimum configuration. It is being promoted as being "almost as good as" the traditional DS, but "more accessible" - simpler so more surgeons can offer it. The hope is that it will fall somewhere between the RNY and DS in performance, with fewer side effects and limitations than either. If that holds true, then it will earn a spot in the WLS world, and if not, it will be another procedure that doesn't quite make it, like the "mini" bypass. Most of the BPD/DS surgeons don't offer the SIPS as they don't need a simpler procedure, and already have the VSG for the less challenging patients. Here is one very biased opinion on it from one of those surgeons: https://www.dssurgery.com/weight-loss-surgery/sadi-sips/ The position of the ASMBS on the matter: https://asmbs.org/resources/position-statement-single-anastomosis-duodenal-switch and, here is Dr. Roslin's take on it: https://www.nycbariatrics.com/weight-loss-surgery-options/sips-procedure Dr. Roslin is well quaiified on the BPD/DS (and is one of the few with the skills to do the very complex RNY/DS revision) but it seems that he is actively working on the SIPS for the greater good of the WLS community as a whole - that "almost as good as, but more accessible" concept that can hopefully benefit more patients over the long run. At this point, only time will tell. As an individual decision for right now, that's a tough one. With your regain history, I would be inclined to go the the well established BPD?DS, as that has proven to have the best regain resistance, but that would likely involve travelling for you (I don't know of any DS docs in MA, but there are several in the NY/NJ/PA area.) It is good to see that you are doing the "head work" as that is an essential part of any of these procedures - one can "eat around" any of them, though it is harder to do with the DS. One of the things that I have found to be helpful is what this doc covered here - One of the things that doesn't get covered much by other surgeons is that our eating capacity does increase slowly over time, and this is something we have to compensate for. One may or may not get along with this doc's prescription for a veg first diet, but it does make sense from the perspective of filling in that added capacity with bulky, low calorie veg. Think about it, discuss it with your therapist, and maybe you find a different approach to handling this problem. Good luck!
  15. I just had my gastric bypass surgery done yesterday and everything went good and doing a lot of walking to get rid of this gas.

    Still no 2004 Bandsters here???

Sure! I love talking about this stuff with people I know won't judge me. My friends all look at me like I'm crazy... Anyway, I know if I have my band removed my weight will explode. So the surgeon I'm seeing says I could have a revision done in one surgery--right after removing the band he could do a sleeve or an RNY. He said the sleeve was a bit more difficult to do because of the scar tissue the lap band will leave behind after the removal, but could be done. But the main reason I'm going with the RNY is I used to have terrible acid reflux before I got my band. The band all but cured it. And many people who have never even had trouble with reflux develop it after getting a sleeve so that sounded too risky. And I've developed a touch of maturity onset diabetes, and a RNY is supposed to really help with that. So that's why the RNY. If you need to know more, just ask! WLS isn't for the faint of heart and it's great to find like-minded individuals to discuss this with.😁
  17. With the fact that you have gerd the dr should be able to get approval for the revision I have only had the Vsg and preparing to revise to bypass. Gerd is my issue as well.
  18. JRT Mom: I'm unfamiliar with all the newer procedures and/or revisions. Did study the RNY prior to my own Band. Wondering if you would mind informing what makes that your choice now? Thank you, Jack '04 Bandster
  19. I’m researching SIPS vs DS and I’m so confused on the correct choice! SIPS seems easier to live with less side effects possibly and an up and coming surgery while DS has been around longer and has more follow up data. My surgeons office only does SIPS and truly has not done that many of them so I’ll probably switch surgeons as well. My story is that I had a nightmare band experience in 2011, didn’t lose much at all and regained all as well as port discomfort etc until being revised in 2017 to sleeve. I did amazing on sleeve for 2 years lost almost all my weight (112lbs) but regained about half. I’m desperate to find the right surgery and so afraid I will make another mistake! I know I need a more powerful surgery than the sleeve and yes I’m doing the “head work” in therapy. Any advise on which I should choose or how I should make the decision?
  20. I say metabolism and genes are a big player on my side. Before surgery I was hungry every 2 hours even after eating a huge plate of food never get full but now after surgery I feel better the bypass does change your internal plumbing and metabolism...
  21. I am stoked i got weighed the day I was admitted Monday 28th i was stuck in hospital a week on fluids only could only walk the last 4 days got home last night finally had a really good sleep couldn't sleep much in hospital due to pain and being woken every few hours by nurses... I weighed 257 on admission and today this morning I'm 247 by my scales so that's 10lbs gone in 8 days since admission That's pretty good since I could still be a little bloated from gas or fluids but I just felt I needed to weigh myself to get a base line to continue my journey. Feels great to get under that 250 number I'm drinking water and protein shakes very easily Just taking smaller mouthfuls than normal definitely going to the toilet more often so it seems that the bypass makes the liquids go through me quicker now 😛 glad to be back online!!!
  22. I'm looking at a revision from sleeve to DS loop too. How are things going now? Also, you mentioned you were self pay - do you mind sharing the cost? I'm looking into insurance but might end up being self pay too. Thanks and I hope you are doing great!

    The Maintenance Thread

I am never going to be able to maintain my weight with the little I eat argghhh Today I've only had one yogurt, 3 wings, a packet of protein chips, and a packet of dried seaweed. My plastic surgeon saw me today and said I looked awesome and not *gaunt* like some bypass patients end up.... but I'm on that path. Making turkey brats w/ coleslaw for dinner. Yesterday I ate straight JUNK knowing I would get sick but it was a lot of calories and I felt desperate in the moment to "stop losing". I did get sick, not shockingly. I'm about to have my plastics so I have GOT to get the cals and protein up for recovery. Big unf. I tried eating some beef veggie soup my stepdad made that *gasp* had TINY cubes of potato in it and it made me sweaty and nauseous. Edit: Just reading the few above comments. I DO know my BMR and it's 1350 (give or take). Which is comical since I eat about 600-700 cals tops (and obviously a lot less today).
  24. no problem Mac..... Have you been approved Yet? Reason i'm asking..... most insurance requires 35 BMI with 2 co morbids. When i had my band in 2009 it was the requirement. ORRR 40 BMI which is where i was. 5'2" and 232lbs. This time i didn't have to because i was still considered a revision even though my band was removed 2.5+ years ago. My bmi this time was 31. SW 173.5..... Today, 145.2 Fk yes.... Back to you.... if you have not be approved yet, you may want to lay off the dieting. Some insurance with not approve you if they see a weight loss. My dr. advised me to not lose anything till i got the final approval. Did you go watch the youtube vids...??? I've been in the WLS community for over 10 years and he is 100% right with everything he says..... no sugar coating with him at all.
  25. After many months of jumping through insurance hoops I’m scheduled for November 26th for my revision from lap band (2008) to rny. And the new journey begins!
