  1. Hi, I got my first fill yesterday. I was banded on April 25th. I really havent eaten much real food yet, just some cottage cheese, Soup, applesauce ect.......... I just drank liquids until tonight and when I tried to eat some cottage cheese, I felt like I needed to cough. Is this what "restriction" means? It sort of hurt and now it feels like something is kind of sitting there...not real pain, but not too comfortable either. Will this feeling go away or is this what it will always feel like? I dont know how much saline the Dr. put in... I hear he isnt agressive and takes it real slow. I really dont like this feeling. It feels like it is in my chest more than my tummy. Is this normal? thanks in advance for your replies, Janette P.S. I have lost 33 pounds in 6 weeks, which I assume is good.... but my doctor didnt say anything to me yesterday about my weight...is that weird or what? :paranoid
  2. Ses - I'm really surprised that your doc would want to fill you every two weeks! My doc and all others I've heard about have to be nearly begged to fill after a month or so. That may be something you need to consider. Doing it too fast doesn't give it time to heal from the previous fill. Also sounds like your doc has the typical bedside manner of troll. Good luck sweetie and we are all here for ya!

    March Bandsters Pre-Op diet?

I am goign to NYU to have my surgery and will be doing a 1000 calorie liquid/high Protein diet for 2 weeks before surgery. I start on March 10th since my surgery is on the 24th. I have done medifast in the past and have some of those shakes. When those are finished I will do Slimfast Optima. They also give in for about a veggies Soup you area llowed 2 cups a day. I know I will also supplement with that during the 2 weeks. Christine

    March Bandsters Pre-Op diet?

I'm going to NYU for mine, where the standard requirement is a two week liquid diet pre-op. For me, they recommended 6 cans a day of Optima Slimfast, allowing sugar-free drinks, sugar-free ice pops, sugar-free puddings. The idea is to aim for about 1000 cals a day, and to keep Protein intake above 50 gm. If you're going with the surgery, I'd highly recommend WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY FOR DUMMIES - it's a fantastic book, and has loads of information about all aspects of this process.

1 week post op follow up visit-SO HAPPY!

My post op appt was Thursday. I saw the surgeon for maybe a minute. All was well and yeah ,I get to start mushies next week. Only downer we are vacationing in beautiful ,sunny ,Galveston Tx. next week, and I am not allowed to get in the water. I was so looking forward to the heated swimming pool, hot tub and Schliterbaum, but the surgeon said no because risk of infection. I will make up for it next year.I go back for f/u visit in 2 wks. good luck to all.

    Had my PreOp Appt today

Hey Sotex, that's great. I don't have a scale, so I won't find out how much I've lost during my 2-week pre-op diet until I go in for surgery on Wednesday, but it definitely feels like at least 10 lbs. Not much when you weigh in the mid-300s but it does feel good, and I'm getting pretty excited for the 19th - lot of us going in on that day! Let's do this thing!
  7. WrenBird you need to look up The Diet Solution by Isabella Del Rossi. It's a 15 minute video keep a pen and pad beside you to take a few quick notes. My husband and I started to eat this way back in March and I lost 15 pounds in the first week. If you do let me know what you think.

    drinking water/liquid intake

For the first week don't expect to get to 64 oz per day. Surgeons generally recommend 4-8 oz the first day (the day you have surgery), 12-24 oz the second day, 24-36 oz the third day, 36-48 oz the fourth day, 48-64 oz the fifth day and a minimum of 64 oz per day going forward. Increasing your Fluid intake slowly gives your body time to readjust. Start with hot tea in the morning, then go for cooler liquids throughout the day, hot broth, etc. If you start your day with a hot fluid your band will open up a bit and it will make things easier.

That "full" feeling and another question

I am just over 3 months post op. I was like you measuring all my food and stopping at that point regardless. It all depends on what food I eat. For example lets say I eat some salmon. Salmon is a lot more dense thus I get full on 4 oz. If you eat some steamed veggies they are less dense and you can eat more. So how much food depends on how dense it is. The feeling of full is really hard to find or understand. Remember your brain takes twenty minutes to realize your full. You are looking for that physical feeling. Hince thats why we have bands because we eat till we feel full. At that point we ate way too much. I have 5.75 cc's now and I have to be very careful on how fast I eat. or I can get stuck, which hurts. I still measure out my food volume. your only two months out so your still healing. Measure out your food and stop. Time yourself between each meal. if you start to get really hungry at around 2 hours after then you need a fill. I eat every three hours regardless. As for drinking water, (only after about 45 mins after you eat), I drink that stuff down like there is no tomorrow. It wont extend your pouch as it will pass right on through. When you get good restriction and you just ate a very dense meal and didn't wait long enough after you ate to drink water....ouch! that really hurts. P.S. I also had my 3 month labs done. all was good but Vitamin D was low. apparently this is very common. You need D to absorb calcium. Just a heads up. Good luck! Be diligent and dedicate yourself to exercise and good nutrition.:sneaky:

    bad fill?

Thanks for your support - it really means a lot! Since I actually do feel restriction now, I am hoping that they just missed the port last time. Also, at the first fill, it hurt like hell and this time, I hardly felt anything at all. I guess I will have to wait until next week to find out for sure. Good news - I actually lost 1.5 pounds since yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! See what a "good" fill can do. No, Jorget I was unable to attend the last support group, but I do plan on being there next time. The paper that I have says it isn't until the 27th - it seems like a long time away! Eileen

    Congratulations all 4/22 banders

Lita, How are you doing? I am feeling fine...pretty much back to normal. I don't have runs and very little gas anymore. I was advanced to Stage 3 on Thursday and on the following week I was told to go to Stage 4. I did cheat a bit today and had Spanish food but not a lot. I had a meat and cheese empanada and 1 spoon of rice and Beans and a bite of chicken. It was soooooo good but I don't want to start doing that on the regular. The gas will be a problem for you for about a week and then it just goes. I do find I need to eat every 2 hours or so or my stomach will roar like never before. I have Cream of Wheat for breakfast, yogurt for snack, a smoothie or 1/2 c of soup for lunch, an Optifast for mid afternoon snack, and some Protein, veggies for dinner. I always end the day with a popsickle, applesauce, or Jello. My biggest problem is trying to drink 8oz in an hour. I know I need the Fluid but I just forget. I do get full quick but am not losing right now...think I am stagnant. I have been released for exercise so next week its off to the gym. My mini-goal is to lost another 7 pounds by time I go back to the doctor for my first fill on 5/16. Wish me luck!!! I sent you a private message with my email and messenger info...look forward to hearing from you soon.
  12. Hey there to all bandsters! I'm just wondering if anyone has had as much difficulty as I am trying to shrink my belly! I work out faithfully 5 days/week. I do not eat large portions. For the most part my diet is healthy, but to be honest I do eat not so healthy things also. Has anyone had this problem and overcome it? If so how? Was anyone lucky enough to not have this problem?!!! If so what type of diet and exercise habits did you follow? I'm so FRUSTRATED!!!!
  13. Ok ok, I know I shouldn't be weighing myself more than once a week but I stepped on the scale this morning and I gained 3 pounds since Tuesday! How is this possible? There is no way I have eaten 10,000 extra calories in four days! I am freaking out slightly here...am I just overreacting?
  14. Jorjet

    bad fill?

Awwww Eileen, I am sorry to hear you are having problems. I went to the Dr. on Friday, and I requested the doctor, not the PA. I don't feel any restriction as of yet, but as I read here....it sometimes takes up to a week. Were you at support last week? There were so many people there...I don't recall seeing you... Cheer up.....the DR. will get you straight.... Hugs

    Banded at JH Bayview?

Barbara C - Yes I am. I tried to get approval from BCBS in june and was denied. Then I immediately started the 6 mos supervised weight loss with my doc. Tomarrow is my last appointment (for the 6 mos). I hope what we've done is sufficient. Did they (GEHA) tell you exactly what should be happening during that six months ? I hope the drs notes in my chart are sufficient. I should have all the paperwork together next week...

    plateau already?

I went on vacation this past weekend. Fri- Mon. I ate whatever I wanted. It was mostly ice cream, fried seafood and crab legs. I guess it's obvious I vacayed on the beach. When I got on the scale this morning I was 209!! I cant believe I struggled for a week and finally lost when I was trying the least! I'll take that loss and hopefully I'll be at 207 by Monday.
  18. BeefromCalie

    plateau already?

I keep reading and reading the average is 1 to 2 pounds per week so looks like you are on target. Are you feeling restriction yet?

    Hiatal Hernia

I just had my band done this week; after the surgery the doc told me he had found one when he got in there and just repaired it while he was in there. I'll ask him when I go back for my 1-week checkup if that increased slippage possibility. It'll be interesting to hear his viewpoint, since it sounds like opposite opinions from equally qualified experts! Emily
  20. The biggest question is what will your diet be at 2 weeks post-op. Many surgeons are totally different. I cannot predict what your surgeon will have you on. If I were you, I would absolutely lie like a rug and develop a very nasty stomach virus, or to explain why you were off work, say you had hernia surgery, that way you can either postpone your lunch for another two to four weeks until you are certain to be on solid food (some surgeons have you on regular food at 4 weeks, some at 6 weeks post-op), or if you choose to go ahead with the dinner, then you can just order some Soup and explain you are taking it easy after either the stomach virus, or the surgery, whichever you choose.
  21. I am two weeks post op & had that same feeling. But its all gone now, except when I get full. That is my signal that I have eaten to much! This band is a God-Send! I am so thankful for this site & this band...it is saving my life! All will be fine I'm sure, the swelling & tightness will go down. Good luck!!!

    Crazy "sweet spot" question....what next?

The monthly visits are very important, whether you're losing weight or not. The doctor wants to monitor your progress. Too much weight being lost, they're going to unfill you a little bit. I know that might horrify some of you, but I lost a lot of hair during my 100 lbs fiasco that scared the bejesus out of me because I ate terribly, nothing nutritious, mashed potatoes loaded with butter and southwest eggrolls...but I kept losing because my restriction was so tight. Fortunately I have a lot of hair and it wasn't noticeable except when I wore black suit jackets...but I put a stop to that by going vegetarian and following the blood type diet, which is the last regimen I will ever need! If you are not losing fast enough, they'll bump you up a little. I could swear the thinking at my doc's office was: 1. Fill - liquids 2 days (lose weight) 2. Mushy foods 2 days (lose more weight) 3. Solid/regular...which makes you maintain for another 3 - 4 weeks til next follow up. Like clock work, 4 - 8 lbs a month. I always lost the most during fill time and then it was just my body dealing with the lost fat. Then my body would be like "OK...lord...we can survive with those 8 lbs, I just made the adjustments, we should be able to hang on to calories again!" and then I thwart it with another fill :wink2:
  23. Ok, so I am starting another thread, but I REALLY want to see pictures of you guys and your progress! Here are mine! The fist was taken 2 weeks after my surgery and the other is from last week.

I'm a stomach sleeper, are you?

This Was My Biggest Whining Issue After Surgery!! I Had TROUble laying on my side and stomach for a good week. then about the middle of week two i was able to sleep on my side//stomach. so i say two weeks and you should be able to sleep comfortably again. fyi-my port is in the upper center line of my abdomen, below my diaphram. sounded awkward to me at first too, but i would not have it any other place now that i am used to it.

    Feeling discouraged, depressed...etc.

Hey Chickie... I was banded a week before you...And you are a loser-- 34lbs worth! Go get a fill. I am going to get one next week because I have very little restriction--only in the morning. I didn't gain over the holidays but I didn't lose anything from Thanksgiving till last week and this week. But I have not been working out until the last 2 weeks (just got my treadmill). I also joined Daily Plate to track where my calories are coming from etc. It is a wake up call. Enter in your little grazing Snacks and see how bad they are-- that will wake up the bandster inside you. It did for me. A month of mashed potatoes/gravy and green bean casserole made me feel like a loser too-not in the good way. This is a learning process. We have to undo decades of poor eating habits and other issues--it is not going to happen in 5 months. In addition-I committed myself to measuring out and weighing correct portions (4oz at a time). This has helped me realize that I need a fill. You are on track for at least 1 lb a week though..... Keep your eye on the long term.... Kick yourself in your now 34lbs smaller ass and lets make February a fresh start! Julie-- YOU TOO GIRL. Let's focus gals! We're the September Samuri! And September SUPERSTARS. I will check in with you both tomorrow-- Let me know how you did.
