    First Fill

I had flouro on Friday and my port is totally flipped. They tried to manipulate it but couldn't. So I am having a revision surgery but they don't know when they can schedule because I have to pay the hospital fees and my doctor is going to reimburse me with free care for a few extra years. So I am dissappointed because I am very hungry now, and no longer loosing weight. However, I just want to get this surgery over with so I can get a fill and get back on the wagon.

    Medicaid/Wellcare in GA

I just got Wellcare and considering either the bypass or the lap band. Pass on the names of the Dr's that accept wellcare. PLEASE!
  3. Keep in mind that when these doctors are talking about success rates, 'success' is determined by patients losing 50% of their weight...and they only track for a short period of time. By those guidelines, bypass is far more successful, because patients will lose about 60% of their excess weight just from the malabsorption aspect of the surgery...and they'll lose it quickly. However, you read the statistics 2-3 years out, you'll find that it sort of all evens out and there's little difference between any of the WLS surgeries in terms of 'true success'. There are many bypass patients who never lose any more than that and some will actually gain their weight back. Some do just fine after surgery, but there are also people who have one medical problem after another as a result of the malabsorption...and you never know which one you're going to be until it's too late and you're stuck with whatever it is because it's not reversible. I've had my band for 15 months now and am having it taken out due to constant phrenic nerve pain in my shoulder. I'm still debating whether I'll have the revision to a sleeve. I'm not worried about any 'leaks'...the success rate without postop complications is very very good. I just haven't wrapped my head around the idea of cutting out most of my stomach...but that's just me. If I could get my head around that, knowing what I now know about the band...I'd do the vertical sleeve without any qualms.

    Leak still NOT healed

Stacie - I'm so sorry for what you are going though. Your posting about you leak is freaking me out as my surgery is this Wed 3/3. My Dr has not had a leak with the sleeve and only 7 with 2500 bypass surgeries so I'm hoping I'm not his 1st sleeve leak!! Did you Dr. test for a leak during surgery (before he closed) or later? How did he test? I'm curious because my Dr said he clipped off below the stomach and applied pressure on the esophagus and did air testing using more pressure than any cough I would have. I had not found this type of testing mentioned on the boards so I thought I would asked about you leak testing. Hang in there and best of luck.
  5. It is more important to get your fluids than your protein at this point. Try a different brand of shake. You can also get fairlife milk from grocery store and drink it instead of shakes if you just can’t tolerate them. I had no problem with the premier protein shakes pre op. Had my revision to rny last Friday and I am not able to keep premier protein down at all. I switched to syntrax and fairlife milk. Another thing is to make sure you are just slowly sipping your shakes. Like one ounce in 15 minutes or so. Go too fast and they will come back up due to lack of anywhere to go once your pouch is full. Hang in there and keep us posted.
  6. I had Dr. Nick do my revision on 9/10/13. He was so sweet and it was very quick from the first appointment to surgery (self-pay so didn't have to wait for insurance approval). I was very pleased with Dr. Nick, his staff, and Forest Park Medical - so far it's been a great experience. I just hope I have better luck with the sleeve than I had with the band.
  7. I had mine at Forrest Park Dallas and there were only 2 others on my floor. Everyone was pretty sleepy and we all walked at different times. I would have talked to them but we all seemed grumpy. There was a nutrition class we all went to but some slept sitting up lol. Oh and I was number 1 of the day on my day. I was a revision And my surgery lasted 50 minutes from wheel back to notifying my hubby. My hubby said 50 min later Dr Nick came out to notify another family. Efficient and great success rate with leaks!

    Dr Nick Nicholson- Dallas, TX

I believe he said he has done 6,000 total, but I don't know if that is just sleeve surgeries or if that includes lap bands and bypass.
  9. I've spoken to several people who were only going to have the lap band but in the end had gastric bypass because it's easier in the long run. Thoughts.
  10. I think that some people get the bypass as the band is still relatively new. I think that in about 10 more years the rolls may be reversed as the complications are so much different. I know that the death rate is considerably lower also. For me, my cardio Dr. was happy to ok the band but a bypass,, He wouldnt recomend that one. Best wishes, your decision is one only you can make!
  11. True - they dont do the bypass in Australia, probably you could get it done if the lapband failed, but its not the first choice for most bariatric surgeons. Too risky, too complicated, not good enough long term results. Longer term stats are showing that you lose more slowly with the lapband and its more dependent on personal habits (which is a good thing in my opinion) but you get greater weight maintenance at the end of the journey, compared to GBP where there's a significant proportion of people who lose fast and then begin to regain. So easy choice for me as I wouldnt have been able to find a surgeon to do a bypass but I would never have considered it given the size of my weight problem - simply not worth the risk of malnutrition and the surgical risks.
  12. Hi Speck, I have mixed feelings about it. I think the lapband is more difficult to lose weight. I've lost 30 lbs since June but compared to some who have lost 30+ lbs it makes me upset. Keep in mind that the doctor only wants 1-2 lbs a week which would put me right on target at 1 lb a week. Some of the time I think gastric bypass may have been better for me. The main reason is because if I'm going to have the band for life why not go all the way. I think the reason I didn't go that was was fear and lack of knowledge. I don't know too much about what you can eat. I heard that you can no longer have alcohol or sugar as it will hurt you. Don't know if that is true. In the long run I'm sure I will be happy with my band but like I said I can't imagine being 70 years old and never have had to replace it, therefore gastric bypass might be better. Good luck in your decision.

    The difference a year makes...

Well there is nothing to remove because with the bypass they reduce your stomach by 80-90% and that is permanent. I would say I ate between 500-700 calories a day for the first 6 months. Currently I'm eating around 1200 calories a day. I don't worry about my stomach stretching because I don't eat too much food at any one time, probably no more than 1 cup or 3-4 ounces of Protein. I've had to really retrain my brain to understand what "satisfied" is rather than full. Before surgery I would stuff myself to the point of being uncomfortable. Now I eat until satisfied then stop. It took a while to learn that! Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using the BariatricPal App Ok now I understood the difference Many thanks for your help and information it was very useful Wish you all the best Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Abbreviations

I had RNY gastric bypass 8/1/16. For the first 4-5 months, I had CONSTANT nausea and vomiting. I was on a lot of antiemetics but finally, about 5 months out, that passed. I now only get sick if I eat/drink too quickly or too much

I am officially REVISED to a SLEEVE!

Yay Congrats Barb on your revision!!! I'm glad to see you are doing good Get plenty of rest, walk and sip the water. Wishing you well!
  18. lap band has taken what little butt and legs I had. But now I have to revise to another surgery and have no earthly idea as to what in the world I'm going to do. this is one of my biggest fears. I can't help but I'll heed all of the advice that others here are giving you. Therefore, I suppose Me and my bad knees will be trying to squat. I don't think my tooth pick legs can lose any more, Lord I hope not. Good luck to ya!

    First Fill

Had my first fill today! I found out I have a 10 cc band, with 3 cc's already in from surgery. He put 1 cc in. The doc was VERY happy with my weightloss. He says I'm on par so far with his bypass patients! And he didn't want to give me a fill - I said no way, I'm hungry! So he did. It wasn't that bad. He didn't give me any numbing medication or anything, and it hurt a bit, then a bit of pressure, but it wasn't intolerable or anything. Now that I know what it feels like, the next one won't be as bad.

    Lap band questions

I never had a lap band (I had sleeve) but I have seen a lot of people on here posting with issues and most of them end up having to revise to another procedure eventually. May be worth doing some research if you are having issues.

    Marketplace insurance

typically in Texas any marketplace plan will not cover any kind of bariatric surgery. SO its a lot of the southern states that do not cover it due to the fact that the majority of people there are overweight and eat poorly. (Which is what one insurance agent told me) So the only way to get it covered would be to move to a state that does cover it, get your surgery and move back. I thought about that if i ever needed a revision because here in Florida its also excluded. I paid cash for my surgery
  22. I have to admit I have seen many people mention it on here but had never tried it till today. I failed with the sleeve and I’m trying other things before I go the revision route. The NP said to try tea, especially when I know it hasn’t been long since I have eaten and surprisingly I think it worked.

    Happy with your dietician?

I have had no support. Got banded Jan of 22. Since then I have only met with my dietitian once and that was upon request. I’m so confused as to what to eat. I just had revision surgery last week. I had a port leak. And now I’m trying to figure out what I’m supposed to be doing. That’s why I just got this app. Any advice?
  24. While the decreased vitamin and mineral absorption after gastric bypass is very well known and researched, not very much can be found about various drugs absorption or antibiotics absorption. I did a bit of research on this topic since I know UTIs are a concern especially for women. It is interesting to see that some antibiotics absorb as low as 37% while others absorb at 100%. Please see below some articles on this subject. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/754391 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32314257/ https://www.jabfm.org/content/jabfp/20/3/310.full.pdf https://www.drugs.com/article/antibiotics-for-uti.html

    Lap Band causing irregular bleeding??

First of congratulations on your weight loss. Your gyno is an idiot. If I were you, I would get a new one. Preferably one who knows a little bit more about that band than her. (I know that will be hard to find) She obviously is confusing the band to gastric bypass. My doctor told me the same thing that the band wouldn't affect any of the pills I was taking, just to take them one at a time about 5 mins apart and with warm liquid. Good luck to you.
