  1. Hello, I am in NH and received the Gastric Bypass 3 weeks ago. I have lost 38 lbs since the surgery and 46 prior and so far it had been great. I miss food but love the way I feel more. Good Luck!! U will do great! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    DS for lower BMI revision

I'm not going in for a revision but I am getting a DS in 8 days. I didn't want to be in a place where I'd need a revision later and went right to it. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app
  3. I'm currently scheduled for a MGB in February (from a GS). My surgeon and I only talked about the MGB, and not DS. My BMI is 36.6 (with two co-morb.), but I really want this to be my final surgery (no more revisions!). Should I talk to my doctor about the DS? Is recovery/life style really that different than a MGB/GB? I'm a self-pay, so insurance is not a concern. I have to take Rexulti for depression (I've tried stopping and it went poorly) and it caused me to regain 30 pounds, so I'm particularly concerned about weight regain. Thanks in advance!
  4. I am undergoing a revision from gastric sleeve to a MGB in February, and I'm a little worried about my meds. I currently take Vyvanse 70 mg and Adderall 20mg 3x daily. (yes, I am aware that is a crap ton of stimulants). Anywho, how have people's experiences been taking these meds post MGB? Do you crush the IR Adderall tablet? Does it work as well? I assume the Vyvanse doesn't work as well because its extended release. Has anyone switched to IR Ritalin or the patch? What dose were you switched to? The highest patch doesn't seem equivalent to 70mg of Vyvanse and Methylphenidate hasn't worked super well for me historically. To quote my previous psychiatrist after hearing my new doc switched me to it, "But that's for children!" I currently also take a prescription NSAID for migraines 1-2 times a month. Do I have to stop taking that? I assume so but Triptans (maxalt, sumpitriptan) make me super sick. What have you switched to? Tylenol will not cut it. Cambia has been the holy grail of migraines for me, so I'm bummed to stop taking it. Of course, I'm going to speak to my neurologist, psychiatrist, and surgeon, but would love your personal experiences. Thanks!

    Lap Band Removal

I got mine 10 years ago and it worked great-until it didn't. I was never able to eat meat without getting sick, so I just became a vegetarian, but I was OK with that and now I'm happy about it. But back in January I started to slime and vomit almost immediately after EVERY meal, so I had the fill removed and then only got sick about three times a week. But that respite only lasted about 2 months, then I was getting sick again, even after just drinking water sometimes. They did barium swallows and it looked great-no slips, dilations-things of that sort-but still something was wrong. So I went back to the surgeon where he explained that if even if everything looked great on an x-ray, scar tissue develops where the band rubs the stomach, and that's what's causing the restrictions even with no fill in the band. And it was just a matter of time before it restricted so bad NOTHING would get through it without much difficulty. So it's coming out Nov 20 and being revised to an RNY during the same surgery, and I can't wait. I hope I'm not changing one problem for another, but I don't think so. The plus of this is the transition should be easy since I've practiced the "eating rules" for 10 years and know the difference between "head hunger" and true hunger, and maybe finally I can eat without dreading it and wondering "would I get sick THIS meal". I know the portions will still be small, but if they go down without the sliming and "productive burping" and pain I'll be happy!

    Lap Band Removal

Hello Pita4404, you are not alone at all! I had my lapband for 7 years and words can't describe how liberated and relieved I felt when I had it removed this past may and revised to sleeve in August. The last few months were horrible and I didn't have a slip! The bloating, the reflux, the plain discomfort of eating and slimming etc!!! I felt like I was in a life sentence! Especially when one pays for it out of pocket. You just feel like I bought this pain on myself and have to live with it...NO YOU DON'T! At one point it was no longer about weight loss, it was about survival. I can't believe how long I allowed the band to rule my life. All healthy foods didn't pass through and I had to subsist on unhealthy foods. You NEVER can predict what the band would allow on any given day! Arghhh, just thinking about it makes me very sad, it was truly like an abusive relationship! My life has been completely different since it's been out. I have control back. The sleeve is like a night/day difference. I can eat salads and fibers again. I feel so grateful being able to eat out without checking to see where the nearest restroom is. I feel healthy and "normal" again. TAKE IT OUT!!! And Congratulations in advance to a whole new existence[emoji176][emoji176][emoji176][emoji176][emoji176] Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Early Procedure Confusion

bypass tends to be a bit more effective at resolving diabetes, but I know people with the sleeve who've had it resolve, too. Ask the surgeon - he/she should be able to advise you one way or the other.

    November Surgery

November 22 for me - having the bypass. Planning to take two weeks
  9. Here's a story! I was ON THE TABLE, put to sleep... SURGERY DAY (this was just in September) and they woke me up 20 minutes later and said "sorry, we can't operate. You have a huge mass in your stomach and we don't know what it is." YEAH. So I'm more-than-half drugged... confused... asking everyone who will look at me "DO I HAVE CANCER??" and getting answers like "we don't know what it is, yet. The doctor will talk with you when you are awake." I clearly remember replying OH I AM AWAKE NOW. They referred me to OBGYN and I found out a few days later I have a huge cyst on top of my uterus. I am heading back into surgery this coming Thursday for a hysterectomy and, if there are no surprises or complications, I will also receive my gastric bypass surgery at the same time (the two surgeons coordinated and are working together). So there's a story for you! : )

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

I would go with your surgeons recommendation since most of the folks here are not doctors. I weighed 215 (5 ft 5) at my consult....I’m thinking since I’m at the “lower” end of the BMI that he’d recommend the sleeve. I have reflux so he recommended bypass. Since the surgery, reflux is gone. My BP went from high 140’s/80’s to 120’s/ 70( or less) , the same day. It’s crazy! Do your homework, sounds like you are. Btw, your pcp probably isn’t an expert on bariatric surgery. Good luck with whatever you choose!

I HATE I GOT THIS STUPID SURGERY!

I had the bypass on the 22... a week later I had IVs at home for 5 days and it was awesome. However, now I’m having a hard time getting enough fluids AND the protein. It’s one or the other for me, sometimes I suck at both. I do not regret it one bit but I’m anxious to get my energy back. I went to an Escape Room today and I swear, my brain is not functioning. Was useless, lol. Once you can have soft food, it won’t be as bad. Think about it...it’s a few crappy weeks out of your (most likely longer) life. It’ll be worth it.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

I completely agree, Im having the bypass done after having the sleeve due to vomiting and constant reflux and its been going on since the sleeve was done 3 years ago. I just assumed the vomiting was from me overeating. I can't wait to get this over. My surgery was scheduled in October but due to some family emergency I had move it to Nov. and now I'm on my second 5 day fast in 2 months and I can't wait til they put me to sleep just so I can't feel hungry anymore. The Maintenance Thread

Yes I’m a VGS patient and the main reason I chose VGS over bypass was exactly bc of malabsorption. Had I been even 10 years older, I might have chosen bypass, but I’ve still got to work full time while maintaining super-high levels of energy and focus. This info stays here, but my career is extremely youth-oriented. It’s extremely difficult for those of us >50 to keep up. Lately at my age and stage I was STRUGGLING physically to hang in there. A chain retail pharmacists MUST be able to work 10-12 hour shifts with zero breaks, downtime or relief all the while being able to multi-task incredibly heavy burdens. One moment of distraction (which most commonly is a result of a full bladder, empty stomach, or physically worn out body) can be deadly and every single one of us is aware of this at all times. For me, side effects from malabsorption, whether it be dumping or fatigue from vitamin and nutrient deficiency wasn’t an option if I want to be as safe to the public as each and every person deserves. On the other hand, being chronically tired and physically wrung out due to carrying around 100+ pounds excess weight wasn’t helping so that had to change. I figure with just the weight I’ve lost so far, I’ve given myself another 10-12 years extended career time, which is amazing since I’m 51 and I’d love to keep working part-time after age 65. I’ve always been a slow metabolizer. Even when I was a thin college student, I’d gain weight easily if I didn’t keep track of calories and activity. Even though WLS gives us a metabolic reset, mine prior to being completely messed up wasn’t the best so I’m expecting that I’ll never be the girl who can maintain in the 1800-2000 range even with increased activity. Honestly I’m okay with that. If I have to maintain at 1200-1400 daily, then that’s what I’ll do. I have this tool. I plan on using it for the rest of my life. I will use my tool and I will use IF. I do battle intense constipation. Like Sillykitty, I’m a 1-2 times weekly “mover” and once it hits 4/5 days, I’m uncomfortable. It does take me at least 3 days though bc the discomfort starts. I use senna/mom about once weekly, and that’s on top of my daily miralax. I drink plenty of water, but I’ve always battled chronic constipation so it’s nothing new. Side note: weighed myself this morning (still slightly constipated,BTW) and I’m now exactly GW -5 pounds. I’m thinking I’m going to set a goal to lose 2.5 more pounds between now and thanksgiving so if I do have some holiday bounce I can stay right around 150.

    Sleeve failure??

I added this to the" revision... omg" page but ill add it here too This is from a surgeon's perspective not mine. The sleeve is not for everyone. Some people did not have the correct surgery for their needs. (My perspective: The may have needed extreme malabsorption along with restriction because the lifestyle changes just could not last. And what to you say to people like that? Just try harder, knowing they cannot? Thats cruel. Give them better tools to do the job.) Sleeve was originally part 1 of 2 of the Switch (DS) but it worked so well some people never needed to have part 2. Then insurance companies allowed it to be billed as a stand alone procedure. But that didnt mean everyone should have stopped at part 1, some people needed to go forward with part 2. When regain happens (Goodbye honeymoon phase) its seen as their fault instead of noncompletion of the process. Shame and guilt adds fuel to the fire and getting insurance companies to cover the "revision" without a complication is an epic battle. Also structurally (VSG or any WLS) is not infallible. Many things can go wrong immediately or even years down the line. *Disclaimer not pointing any fingers at anyone or this thread at all but perhaps the caste system the entire WLS community has created?* IMHO I think its easy and possibly careless to forget that we all (here) needed some level of intervention from WLS after we are successful. It becomes problematic to believe if do everything absolutely correctly (maybe even the first time) some cosmic merit/lottery/award will be paid out for all of our hard work. And those that need more help are getting off easy. Not everyone will lose or maintain 100 % excess weight let alone 65% & the surgeons will tell us this but we ignore it constantly. Sometimes it just doesn't work like in the books no matter what/who's at fault I have learned to mind my business big time because if someone goes through hell and back, the doctors & insurance companies open the pearly gates then they must have their reasons. Apologies for the length
  17. Hi everyone. I have finally hit my goal weight!!! I am over 2 years post ESG now and stated regaining weight steadily late in 2018. I was really worried I would be back where I started regarding my weight so booked a surgical consult to consider revision to a bypass or gastric sleeve. As the wait was 2 months to see the surgeon I wanted to see, I decided to see a doctor led weight loss clinic and start saxenda. I am glad to say that I am now at goal weight, 28kg lost over 2 years with my combination of ESG and saxenda. No surgery needed. For those of you who have had esg and who are struggling with hunger, this has helped me so much. I have mild restriction to meals from ESG but it was snacking that was killing my weight loss. The saxenda has helped this greatly. The combination of the two has been effective.
  18. I can chime in a little here about sleeve failure (although mine didn't fail me) This is from a surgeon's perspective not mine. And I've asked a few. I wish I would have recorded it. Some people did not have the correct surgery for their needs. Sleeve was originally part 1 of 2 of the Switch (DS) but it worked so well some people never needed to have part 2. Then insurance companies allowed it to be billed as a stand alone procedure. But that didnt mean everyone should have stopped at part 1, some people needed to go forward with part 2. (Goodbye honeymoon phase) When regain happens its seen as their fault instead of noncompletion of the process. Shame and guilt adds fuel to the fire and getting insurance companies to cover the "revision" without a complication is an epic battle. But y'all heard this all before...
  19. Back history..... I joined the site back in 2008-2009 i think. Back when it was called Lapbandtalk. Of course, it was for people that had the lapband done. Which i did back in 2009. SW 232, weight the day my band was removed 143 March 2017 due to a slip. This is a revision for me. I know most people say.... well 30lbs is nothing, but when your 5'2" it is. I have told no one except my husband about the sleeve. I didn't want to hear all the crap from all the people. I did what i thought was best. and because i had had a previous WLS and was cash pay.... sleeve it is. Band SW 232, LW 130... removal weight 143 (i stayed here for years) 2009-2017 Sleeved SW 173.5, CW 144.4 (as of today). Sx date Aug 28, 2019....... 10 weeks and two day PO. Chris
  20. I have had both and would take the Laparoscopic surgery over a one scar surgery. For one, the scar is about a foot and a half long. It is also more painful. I just had my bypass surgery and some of my scars are almost gone.

    Rotten timing

My father had a heart attack back in Canada and my surgery is in a week. He has a history of heart disease and has had many heart attacks plus a quadruple bypass, but this is the first heart stack in a decade that was bad enough to fire off the defibrillator unit in his chest. I don't know if I even have the option to move my surgery date or what to do. Sent from my Pixel 3 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Head hunger

most people don't lose weight nearly as fast after a revision as they do after a virgin surgery. So your 33 lb drop is actually very good! Check with your surgeon's office as to what you should be eating. All surgeon's plans are different.

    Need Suggestions on Vitamins

Most of the vitamins out there don't have the amount of vitamins my doctor wants me to have, but I am a bypass patient. I've only found 2 kinds that match what they want, at least in a chewable variety since I haven't been released to capsules yet. My clinic doesn't require as high amounts for sleeve patients, so I think these would likely match my clinic's requirements for sleeve patients just taking the 2 a day. Maybe you could send an e-mail over to your clinic just to be sure you are following your doctor's recommendations? Hair loss starting at 3 to 4 months is, unfortunately, quite normal. Make sure you are hitting your protein goals and keeping up with your vitamins, that's the best way to minimize how much loss there is!
  24. I asked my Weightloss Center and they only support vitamins that are sold by the WLC. It's a horrible place to go and I do not recommend them to anyone. Anyway, I bought Bariatric Fusion Tropical Fruit Bariatric Multivitamin Soft Chews for Post Bariatric Surgery Patients Including Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy, 60 Count, 1 Month Supply and I asked my WLC dietician and she was upset that I did not want to take the Celebrate MC r18 that they sold. I explained that the chewable they sell makes me sick and I cannot even force myself to eat them without getting ill. She said "fine" then told me that I could take the ones I bought but didn't tell me how many I needed to take or if the recommand two chewable a day were fine. Anyone know if two chewables a day are fine? I'm not sure if it's natural and I never noticed, but today I was able to see my hair start shedding and I had my surgery 3 months ago today. I haven't noticed this in the past.

    Changing Habits Prior to Surgery

Hello! Glad to connect with another local person! I think you really hit the nail on the head about making things off-limits. I tend to fail when I do that (long term, short term I can do it). I would like to live a life of moderation and I'm hoping that the bypass can help with that. It's overwhelming at times, but hearing from folks like you is really helpful! I am really, really looking forward to getting a more effective tool. Fingers-crossed! Thanks for sharing your experience!
