the slippery slope and excessive rate of loss
FluffyChix replied to mousecat88's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Ok, so reality check time. You are 143lbs and 5'3". You could be built like a brick sh*thouse. And you still are NOT in danger of being dangerously underweight. You are at the VERY high end of normal. So take a deep breath. And don't stress. Here's the standard chart. But you may not be built standard. Now that we're all breathing and know there isn't any reason for anxiety...congrats! That was a very FAST trip. Your PCP is an alarmist--so is your surgeon. Average weight loss per week is 2-4lbs. Yes, it does usually slow down. But you are building muscle and tearing it down at a very fast pace. Your strength training builds muscle and your biking tears it off of you. Now...more reality...with the amount of exercise you do, I've no idea how you live on only 700cals/day. I don't care if that's weight loss or some kind of monkey butt magical maintenance. You need more calories. You have 3 macros and only 3 macros to choose from: Protein - no one needs (or few need) 120+ grams of protein per day unless you are in that 1% of 1% elite athlete zone. Carbs - you probably are metabolically flexible at this point, and could handle 50-100g per day. But I understand fearing the carb monster. It is real! And carbs (non-veggie sources) are a slippery slope trigger for many. Fats - here is where a major source of calories reside. Some of us can't do super high fat meals. We get nauseated. But when you suppress your carbs, the % of fat naturally goes up relative to everything else. It doesn't mean you're eating gobs of fat. You could probably easily up your fats to become 65-75% of your diet. (AKA keto). Healthy fats and easy sources for fat: avocado olives nuts nut butters olive oil butter coconut oil palm kernel oil lard, tallow omega 3 oils These foods have the smallest volume footprint but pack in the calories and are nutritionally dense. I would personally start by upping your calorie load by 200 cals per day. You can pretty quickly get up to 1400-1600 cals and then stop and see where you are. You may continue to lose quickly. Your metabolism is amped up. But for most of us, we start slowing down in the last 20 lbs. And at 5'3" and 120lbs, you would STILL only be smack in the middle of normal and healthy. So technically you "aren't on your last 20lbs". Congrats. You are a beast! -
Be careful what you ask for...

That depends. You don't drive yourself as cray, BUT the other way gives you more time to really deep dive and do the head work. Any prep work you do up front is time very well spent in my opinion. In the 6-9 month lead-in for me, I broke up with high glycemic carbs, most processed foods, caffeine in any form, all white stuff--especially sugar and white breads, pasta, potatoes and rice. And I was also keto adapted. That made the 2 week liquid diet and post op diet infinitately easier!!! I would have hated to go through all of those things PLUS recover from a major surgery. -
Pre op diet and cheating
KarenLR75 replied to brandimichellexo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
See - you have many victories! You can ABSOLUTELY do this. It also takes bravery to be honest on a WLS forum about cheating. I admire your honesty. I hovered on these forums since late in 2017 and didn't actively post until April of this year (2019) so I have seen many many ppl just start to give things up (cigarettes, caffeine, soda, carbs, etc.) at the start of their pre-op diets and I always feel for them as it can be a bit overwhelming especially if they start to feel what some call the low carb/keto flu. Yes, you are close to my youngest's age so age is on your side which is GREAT!! Please don't think I was giving you a failing grade on your pre-op diet or trying to judge you. The only thing that kept me on mine was being older and like I said...being scared. That does not make me better than you. And I always, always defer to a person's individual doctor unless a poster posts something that sounds hideously.um..dangerous. You WILL be ok! I do hope you can do whatever his/her directions are for the rest of your pre-op (I say this as I couldn't drink anything after 10 PM the night before (so not even 'liquids' on my liquid pre-op) as I was up first at 6 AM the next day as it will also help prepare you a little bit for post-op...without the feelings from having had anesthesia, and some of the bloating and gas pains you may or may not have to deal with. Most of the ppl that I have participated on their topics that have cheated, I'd say about 95+% of them go on to sticking to whatever their pre-op plan was and they took pride in that even though it wasn't 'the whole time'...meaning they didn't have to be perfect, they could take pride in what they did do. Focus on what you can do from here on out. No matter what happens in the next few days though, I AM rooting for you! Us women are STRONG. Whether we are 24, 34, 44, 54, 64, 74, or 84+...we are STRONG. -
Pre op diet and cheating
KarenLR75 replied to brandimichellexo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon explained it and so did another doctor that was originally my surgeon is that they literally have to move your liver out of the way for part/all of the surgery. BOTH surgeons expressed concerns about nicking patients with larger livers as us just having larger livers makes things much more difficult. What I want for both of you, @brandimichellexo and @NagathaChristieis is that you have successful surgeries with positive outcomes and hopefully little to no difficulties. I wish this for everyone who undergoes what I call the 'nuclear detonation option'. WLS is not for wimps that is for sure. WLS is NOT the 'easy way out' no matter how often we might all hear that. I takes COURAGE and commitment, bravery, perseverance, will power, 'higher power', power of good relationships, and sometimes literally blood, sweat, tears, puke, and many many other things. I also think fear when not used in unhealthy ways, can also help keep us on the path we need to go and when we stumble, help us get back to where we need to be. My surgeon had an UBER strict pre-op diet. I also changed surgeons late so I literally ended up doing liquid 800 pre-op diet for 34 days. I've shared though that I did actually have 1 day 'off' during the 34 days. My new surgeon told me to start on 7/5 so I had 7/4 off & I had 1/2 a hamburger, no chips & later that night 1 hot dog. I had been on liquids already for so many days, it felt surreal and weird. Prior to qualifying for WLS, I did keto for 15 mos as my health had deteriorated to point that I knew if I didn't make drastic changes and also do the headwork, I was not going to be here in 5 yrs. Ironically despite my heaviest weight, I had normal BP, NO high cholesterol, NO diabetes, etc. I knew though it was a matter of time. It was WHEN, not IF. I have other very serious health issues& realized that I wasn't ready to die any more prematurely than I needed to. I have a daughter who really really still needs her Mom. More than what most young adults do. I was TERRIFIED that if I did not commit my best to the pre-op, I would put a variable out there (my liver) that my surgeon would not be in complete control of. The 1 thing I told him & my anesthesiologist and that was "I'm at peace with not making it, if that should happen, but my wishes are that you do everything and anything to revive me as I have a child that would not make it through my loss'. So..I didn't cheat as I was terrified. Also, WAY back in my late 20's, I did the Oprah Winfrey "Optifast Diet' and drank 5 of those dang protein shakes (they were so bad back then) for NINETY DAYS. Don't ask me how I did it back then as I literally don't know!! I lost 80 lbs and kept if off for a decade. My Dad was known for having an iron will when he needed to. Likely that is what I had back when I was young. When I count pre-op& post-op diet together (in terms of liquid diet with 800 or less cals), then I roughly did over 46+ days (Dr put me on pureed food 3 days earlier than planned). This does not make me better than either of you. I shared the raw truth of why I adhered to the pre-op diet like there was literally no tomorrow. If I have an 'will' to give at all, is to spend some time on FluffyChix headwork thread....and that I wish you both nothing but the best. Love yourself (and your surgeon..lol) enough to do what you can with your pre-op diets as dictated by your doctors with the days you have left leading up to your surgery. And keep us posted!! BEST WISHES!! -
So what are you unable to eat now?
KarenLR75 replied to mlmx1138's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
REALLY? I hadn't done as much RNY research as up to a few weeks before original surgery date, I was scheduled for VSG. Ended up with an RNY and my date getting pushed back a few weeks but was so into getting thru pre-op diet that I didn't get a great deal of research done on RNY to be honest. Watch me be a 30-percenter I'm pretty hard core on the keto front although I'll have to reconsider the use of artificial sweetners down the road when I'm ready to introduce more things into my 'way of eating.... -
2weeks ago, I went to see my Naturopath, has successfully helped me with an number of health issues through diet ( ie. yeast infections, urinary tract infections, anxiety). I had not seen her since before my Gastric Bypass procedure in May 2019. When I weighed in with her, I was down to 253 from 302. My presenting concern was I feeling very muddled and disorganized in my daily living. After tearfully describing my struggles, my Naturopath immediately told me that she wants me to start the Keto diet. She encouraged to be mindful of the guidelines I was given at the Bariatric clinic and incorporate them into the diet plan that I was encouraged to follow. So far so good, I have not been exactly perfect, however the majority of the food I eat is Keto friendly. I feel really good about this lifestyle and follow up with my Naturopath tomorrow. Fat and Carb intake at stage 3
AZhiker replied to Bianca S.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can get a little sick feeling from too much fat, as well. And I still have steatorrhea (unabsorbed fat that comes out in stools - fluffy, light colored, and floatie) Sorry, if TMI.Since I had fatty liver disease prior to surgery and since I don't tolerate it very well, I tend to stick to fat free dairy products, lean meats, skinless poultry. I do use olive oil, coconut oil, and a little butter, some nuts and an occasional avacado. So I get plenty, but not nearly like a pure KETO diet, and I do not use MCT oil like some do. My poor liver would just not like that. Everyone is so different. You gotta figure out what works for you. But low carb (especially refined grains) can be deadly for weight loss. I only use whole grains - unrefined. Simply cooked grains, and rarely at that. Refined grains (anything in flour form - even if they are "good" grains like quinoa, teff, amaranth, millet, sorgham, buckwheat) will absorb much quicker than whole cooked grains. The quicker absorption causes a higher spike in blood sugar and a more vigorous insulin response. Remember that insulin is what makes us fat - it drives the sugar into to cells, and then the extra goes into fat storage. It turns off the fat burning engine. Keeping the carbs low is the only way to keep the blood sugar and insulin levels low. Even when you eat carbs like sweet potato, fruits, or starchy veggies, it is important to have protein along at the same time. Fruit makes a great dessert, but not an appetizer. You want to slow down the carb absorption (and insulin release) as much as possible . This is also why restricted eating time (6-8 hour window each day) is such a powerful tool. It ensures that insulin is low for 16-18 hours, which allows fat to be used as the fuel source instead of glucose. WHEN and HOW you eat is just as important as WHAT you eat. -
1. personal goal: Imma get to Onderland guddamit; exercise every second day; follow Keto with some IF 2. Surgery: MGB conversion from band, losing (slowly) 3. 91.5 kgs = 201.7 lbs / BMI = 32.8 4. Imma struggle with bad knees so it's gotta be easy 5. Favourite flaw: that I have or that other peeps have? Hehe mine is: I'm naively gullible. I'm like the opposite of Judy Judy - I think everyone tells the truth and is innocent. But I figure that's a kinda nice way to be (except I get terribly shocked when I do find out someone has lied to / manipulated me).

July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
KarenLR75 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, we went on that last nature walk and it was NOT supposed to rain but in the middle of it, we got hit with a deluge of rain and wind (rain coming in sideways). Made it back to car after what felt like forever, completely soaked. We managed to walk 1.7 miles that day and it may have been more if it hadn't been for the rain but that's for another time. It's been 38 days since surgery now and I've lost 19.8 lbs. I'm made peace, at least for now, with the rate I'm losing as I was a very slow 'loser' prior to surgery (did keto for 15 months) so I have to remember without this surgery that I definitely would NOT have lost 19.8 lb in 38 days. Yes, in my first month or two of my 15 month keto journey I did lose a LOT...close to this same rate, but that was probably at least 10 lbs of water weight and that pace was not sustainable. Current weight loss rate is roughly .52 lbs a day which is actually pretty great in my mind. I do feel STRONGLY that I have to keep up the physical activity multiple times a wk. And I know there are more stalls in my future & even gains as I continue to walk with my daughter and am working on a plan to join a friend at a local gym to walk an air conditioned track with her and also to have access to other machines/weights/etc. For now I just wanted to give an update. The 'vent' that I left here the other day helped me to get things out so I could start breaking past the negativity that was going on in my mind and thinking. Thanks for the support. -
pre packed meals snacks breads
momof3_angels replied to lisabaxter62's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My doctor/nutritionist do not want me to ever eat any product that contains yeast. Not sure why yeast specifically, but I know they do not want me to have most breads and similar products. They also do not want me to have any rice and only limited portions of wheat pasta. I CAN however eat 6-10 whole wheat crackers, so I am using that as my "bread". I think I am going to just have to do my best to do a mostly keto"ish" diet. I also just ordered cheese crisps to substitute crackers and add a little protein in their place. Not sure how I will like those yet. Ordered a variety so maybe I can find something tasty. Pre-packaged food: I am going to do my best to avoid all processed pre-packaged food. It usually isn't very healthy for you. But, if I do need something quick and easy I am not opposed to using them occasionally. But instead of frozen meals, I will try to get some fresher versions from local delis. Haven't tried the bariatric site meals, but I did buy some bariatric soups for after surgery. -
Nutritionist thinks I should be eation 1000 cals a day!
FluffyChix replied to Briswife15's topic in Food and Nutrition
My doctor told me pre-op that I needed to be eating around 1500cals, so my body would get the advantage of a sudden drop in calories after the surgery. Make sure you are getting enough cals/nutrition in right now so that you do lose weight, but aren't starving or the surgery might not be as effective. You want your metabolism amped up still. Here's a good link to healthy low glycemic selections of all kinds of food (scroll down to see fruits, fats, meats, etc): https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/keto/vegetables -

Yay girlie!!! You ARE a fierce warrior!!!! What I love about you (and find SO inspiring) is that you own your junk. And you figure out how to hack it to get back to your norm/happy place. And you keep trying and DO-ING until you achieve success!! That's a powerful lesson, not only in life, but here in the post-bari apocalyptic world! You know!?! One thing...with the warrior diet, it's important to throw some variation in there. Mix things up like, maybe doing ADF warrior OMAD or 20:4 combined with 2MADs and even 1 "controlled" feast day. You might even stick a complete 24 or 36 hour water fast at some point in the plan. With IF, it isn't necessary to be keto or low carb, especially if you are metabolically flexible (able to move easily between fat burning and sugar burning). So, so glad this thread has been able to help you get back to your happy place! We missed you! -
I haven't been doing keto on purpose. The current guidelines from my doc are fruit, veggies, and meat. It's okay for me to do 1 protien shake or bar a day (getting me to focus on getting nutrients and protien from whole foods) . I don't do very much fruit because of the sweetness. I've been leaning towards and loving strawberries and berries in general. I suppose one thing that I have a few times a week that I love Is peanut butter.
-
Have you been doing Keto or anything like that? Apparently that can temporarily push up your cholesterol too, but like your doctor said, I bet it's just from the rapid weight loss.
-
Is there any way your doc would supervise you with fasting? Mr. F. is ok to fast with metformin, but he was able to stop his T2 drug (think it was Januvia? or something...) by IF and low carb/keto...just trying to spitball. Lantus absolutely will make you gain or make weight loss very difficult.

Yes! The egg foldover! Love those. But I actually made my original psylli wrap for this one. I'd made them last week and so have them hangin' around lurking and acting shady. Adding the psyllium husks (whole, Now brand) to the egg whites and letting them chillax then frying in a pan til they dry out makes them very tortilla-like. You can even nuke them in 15 second bursts on a paper towel until crisp. Turn them once or twice to dry them on both sides. And you have the equivalent of a psyllium cracker that works for everything from Mexican to Mediterranean. Here's the recipe for the original: https://fluffychixcook.com/basic-psylli-wraps-low-carb-gluten-free/ Here's the link to the recipe index. I have a bunch of versions of this that make it fluffier using different low carb keto ingredients like coconut flour, oat fiber, pork rind crumbs (sssshhh don't judge). Scroll Down To The Flatbreads/Tortillas Area: https://fluffychixcook.com/recipes/recipe-index/ -
I used to be a low carb keto blogger (fluffychixcook.com) and so I was aware of all the new products on the market both for low carb keto and sugar free/grain free ingredients and food products. These came on the market a few years back and I liked that they used erythritol as a sweetener and were dark chocolate for extra polyphenol action and also had inulin in them as fiber for more pre-biotic support of your gut. I liked their taste as well, and if you do "net carbs", then one serving is only 2g of net carbs because you can subtract fiber and erythritol (sugar alcohol) carbs. Oh, and you can now buy them in many grocery stores with the other chocolate chips.

Tomorrow will be 8 weeks since surgery and I have lost 23lbs. This is the lowest I have weighed in 3 years. Weight loss has now slowed significantly to 1-2 lbs a week. Averaging 900 calories a day and my doctor recommends no carbs for 6 months. I can eat anything on Keto diet and have been enjoying some recipes I got off Pinterest. Exercising 3 days a week for 45 minutes each with 20 minutes dedicated to elliptical for cardio . It is hard not to get discouraged but I have focus on goal to get to December where I can introduce healthy carbs and if I can just do 5-8 lbs a month that is another 20 lbs. July 2019 Surgery Siblings Post-Op
KarenLR75 replied to Mom_of_Chaos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so confused. I had RNY on 7/25. It has now been over a month and my weight loss is 16 lbs TOTAL since surgery date. The first 2 to 3 weeks I ranged in calories from 100 to 340 calories. The following weeks I'm under 600. I have been walking 1 to 1.5 miles twice a week with my daughter. I am now back in the pool and I work out and also play - but our water volleyball games are intense workouts. It is actually surprising. My 'fit' family and friends even get worn out. So no, I'm not yet exercising every day. My right knee is torn up still but I have been able to sustain/keep pushing through the pain for the small walks we are attempting. I also did not win the 'no hunger' lottery. Seems that many do not. I had true stomach hunger return on either day 2 or 3. At first I chalked it up to stomach acid, etc. but now even almost 5 weeks out, I can almost always discern the difference between head and stomach hunger vs stomach acid. I also have tried to ensure I stay as hydrated as possible. I just needed to come here to VENT. We all know that...these first 3 to 6 months are what...the honeymoon period? The period where the most weight is lost? My dr. recommended RNY for me as I had such a LARGE amt to lose. Now I have those doubts creeping in saying "see, no matter what you do...you are always going to be the slowest loser"..."you just rearranged your anatomy to lose less in 1 month than you did in the first month of doing keto 12 months ago"...."you had RNY to ensure a larger weight loss and ppl within same age and almost same weight range are losing double, triple, what you did". I am struggling mentally and physically. I am INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTED. I have narrowed search for therapists down to 2 so that SHOULD help but I've missed so much work lately that it will be a couple of weeks before I can schedule an appt. I've gone back to tracking the macros on ANYTHING that I eat or drink to ensure extra calories aren't creeping into what I'm doing...and so far my tracking (am SUPER analytical about it) only backs up the fact that I SHOULD be losing more weight, especially as I was probably the most sedentary person you ever saw prior to surgery and I've incorporated actual ACTIVITY finally. I go with daughter also to stores when the heat is too high to walk outside. All I get from dr's office is 'you will lose more weight after you are fully healed' REALLY?!! Then why are all my July siblings and other friends on here blowing my weight loss out of the water by such a significant amount? We are ALL healing. Forgive me for not being more positive. I haven't been posting as I've been so distressed and didn't feel I had anything helpful to say but then I remembered that this forum is for me as well...so yeah...nothing great to add for me but I REALLY REALLY needed to get my frustrations out and my deep dark..makes me sick to my stomach feeling..that I have just 'yet again' done something that won't work. You'd think that the more than 1 yr of head work I did with other counselors and doctors would have helped out more with this thinking..but as a former person in 'recovery', I know all too well that you can have multiple years behind you and have 'stinking thinking' come creeping back in. -
5'2", βοΈ10m PO, maintaining 115.6 lbs Yesterday, Sun Aug 25: I swear, I felt like I was eating NON-STOP yesterday. Btw, another Spoiler Alert: I didn't even attempt the planned 10K run this morning, I woke up super-unnaturally tired and achy and meh despite the calorie and carb increase yesterday (Yeah the carbs were still on the low-ish side for a regular balanced diet, but not for me) This got me to thinking to another possible reason as to why I've been feeling so unenergetic/tired/un-10K-runnable: Keto Flu! I went from being super carbaholic for over a week and then back to 30-40g daily carbs. Sooooo, modifying my experiment: will keep carbs at a level I know I like (while still upping cals in form of fats) and see if this lethargy passes in a few more days and the 10K comes back to me... So today Iβm upping my protein massively and Iβm giving myself a 10 hour eating window 9:30am (80cal) 1/2 premier protein shake (bananas and cream) and in my morning coffee. 11:30am (210 cal) 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 8 ounces fairlife milk 3:30pm (278 cal) 1 cup of that Tuscan keto soup (no extra scoop bone broth powder) 7pm (268 cal) Italian sausage and 1 ounce kimchee. Over 75gm protein and a VERY high calorie day for me at >900 cal. Iβm trying my best to switch things up because Iβm working 22 hours in the next 2 days and will slip into sub 600 calorie days and a 18:6, followed by a 16:8 day. Exercise was a cardio 1.5 class followed by a flow 1.5 β each class was 50 mins -

Okay so broke my fast with this wonderful soup. https://www.galonamission.com/slow-cooker-low-carb-zuppa-toscana-soup-keto-friendly/ For extra protein, we subbed beef bone broth instead of plain broth and I also added in an extra 1/2 scoop of the bone broth powder to pack in 22 gm protein in my 1 cup serving. I can do soups as long as I slurp the liquid, then wait a few minutes and eat the solids. There were no leftovers. -
BAKE COOKIES?? This is a challenge I definitely can't do waaaaaaa (I know I know but even keto cookies would make my calorie load fail under pressure)

So coming off of a 20:4 day yesterday and planning a 16:8 today. The last bit of my cheeseburger casserole (almost 1 cup) and some olives and feta cheese that got from the olive bar at my grocery store. The p3 will be my afternoon snack, and then dinner will be a recipe I found earlier this year for some keto Tuscan soup. Iβll have to get on their website later to get all of the nutritional for that. So far, Iβll have 31 gm protein and under 7 carbs with these 2 meals. Breaking my fast now (12:30pm my time) with the casserole and olives and will have the p3 around 4-ish and then Iβll have 2 Pilates classes tonite from 5:30-7:30. My hubs is the best so heβll finish up dinner while Iβm away so I can get down to eating by the time I get home and be finished up before 8:30 when my eating window officially closes. -
I'm also 5 years post VSG this year. Dealt with some regain about 3 years ago. Also lost a parent, moved, changed jobs, etc etc etc. My regain was slow and I did the "I can eat everything in small amounts" thing for a while. I went crazy online looking for the magic reset button. I consulted on a RNY revision. I was desperate...then a really ugly health issue (one that I had surgery to help combat) returned and was really bad and I had a very REAL 'come to Jesus meeting' with a doc who told me some cold hard truths. I went full on Keto and haven't looked back. Got the health thing back under control. Lost my regain. The BIGGEST thing- I had to get out of my own head and realize that I knew what to do, I just had to DO IT. So I started attending support groups again, seeking out all sorts of them that were NOT affiliated with my surgeon, since I was embarrassed to run into someone familiar. I also met with a new nut. psych and NP team. I focused on my health and thankfully, mostly got it back again. I know that this will be an ongoing issue for LIFE, for me the work never stops and unfortunately life doesn't just pick up one day as a 'former' WLS patient. I will forever be a WLS patient, working through my plan, dealing with struggles and keeping the focus on point.
