Yes, eating and drinking gets much more comfortable. You're less than a week out now, so everything is still healing. That's why you have to progress through the food stages before you get back to regular food. I'm almost 5 years out now and I tolerate most things, at least in small quantities. Like most people, I struggled to sip enough fluids in the first few post-op weeks, but after a few months, I could drink at a completely normal pace. Everybody's a little different in terms of what they can eat and what causes discomfort (and what kind of discomfort), but you will learn what you can eat without issues, and that will just become your new "normal."

Food Fatigue?
BlondePatriotInCDA replied to SpartanMaker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes! I too am exactly in the same situation. Most food just as you said taste off lately. It just doesn't appeal to me. I used to enjoy food, now its just something I force myself to do. I'm hoping this is just a phase, keep us updated on if its your meds or something else! -
What's okay to make once you graduate to mush

I think the soft food stage might be a tiny bit early for crispy pepperoni? But it sounds so lovely and it IS a long time since I was at that point. I was super wary about troubling all my staples and stitches back then. You've got to get creative after WLS for sure 😍 -

Not very exciting but sometimes plain comfort food is what I crave. beef sausage with mashed potato, gravy and veg. -
I did the Fast Metabolism Diet (Haylie Pomroy) to reach my goal weight. I wasn’t able to eat the amount of foods it requires but eating them in the phases was enough & I dropped the last stubborn 15 pounds!

How very strange, Now I want to know the reason why ? I am lucky then because I have no issue with the microwave. Just as well because I always heat my food again as soon as I feel able to eat more, I still have a massive restriction.

Spelt is the new in name that is being used in bread here. Probably sounds bettter than the old fashioned word. Emmer is a very old word I recognise from really old cook books, so we used that here back in the middle ages, peasant food. Porridge mostly. I love antique cook books. -
Sticking to post-op plan working 80 hour weeks?
Chrys Kiy replied to Chrys Kiy's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Yes, I already have my food plan for my 2 week post-op period as well as the 6 week period after. My bigger worry is the full Bariatric diet while I go back to work and making sure I can stick to something tenable. -

It is always a challenge to know how many calories are really in restaurant food, but generally I think it's a fair bit more than the at home equivalent! 😆 There is an app now that guesstimates based on a picture or camera of the food, but I haven't tried it, no idea how accurate it would be, but may save you some time? :dunno: Considering your current underweight status, maybe focus on just trying to up the cals without worrying too much about tracking? Or does your Dietician/med team/ own Enquiring mind need to know the data? -
A Change is Coming...

I'm wiped out! This morning I went with my husband to get him settled in for his neck lift. I drank about 10 ozs of water while waiting. After he got to recovery i came to the apartment and drank some tomato soup and protein shake. They are concerned that I haven't pooped but I'm thinking there's nothing in there. The nutritionist told me to drink papaya puree with water. The doctor told me to do laxatives if that doesn't work. Our coordinator came and we went to the central market to get souvenirs and papaya juice. I've been sipping it and it has no sugar so it's very much just fiber and water. 😆 Will report back on the results. 🤣 🤣 🤣 -
Food Fatigue?
SpartanMaker replied to SpartanMaker's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do think there's an element of "meh" going on with me as well. I'm not entirely sure if that's all due to things tasting a bit off, feeling tired (I've been really upping my workouts lately), or if I'm just losing some of the joy from eating. I'm sort of in the opposite boat in terms of food prep. I do almost all the food planning and shopping, as well as 90%+ of the cooking around my house. This is mostly because I'm retired and my wife is still working. When we were both still working, it was closer to 50/50. I do think if I didn't feel obliged to make food for her, I probably wouldn't bother for myself. -
Stricture Gerd correction now bypass!
Mark1107 replied to Mark1107's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the bypass surgery and already it doesn’t hurt to drink water or protein shakes. I’m in a lot of post op pain but excited for the future when I can simply enjoy food again. 3 months of nasty protein shakes and then normal food. I can’t wait. -
I am one week post op and an STRUGGLING to get water in. I’m not worried about food just yet, so just nibbles throughout the day, but I’m forcing water and still can not get my recommended 64. Help!!!

Need help; 2 years post surgery
waterwoman replied to AbsoluteScenes134's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
How much are you able to eat at one time without stomach pain? We don't need to eat a lot at one time, but we do want to eat the most nutritious food we can, so that every bite benefits us as much as possible. Glad you are on a better track! -
Sleeved 2 weeks ago

Hiya. Loads of us struggle with foods and hydration. Even now My stomach will say a resounding NO to something it was pleased to see the day before. I had terrible trouble with smells, my wild hormones made my brain think my body was pregnant. I called on my team such a lot through these stages. They were very understanding and helpful. They told me not to worry about what I couldn't do. TBH I struggled for months but once I could get my hydration right, I felt so much better. My surgeon was against protein shakes and had me on skimmed milk. It has great protein and you can add protein powder or my fav was peanut butter and banana. I was allowed coffee so had lattes. Some have dairy aversions so its not for everyone. I couldn't do pureed meat, it revolted me just looking at it. I made soups with lentils and beans in and added cheese. I blitzed these and ate it thick. I tried to eat 6 tiny meals a day. I ate a lot of low cal ice lollies, still do, addicted. Just do your best, its a tough time -
Sticking to post-op plan working 80 hour weeks?
Chrys Kiy posted a topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am set to have my gastric sleeve next week (hooray!), and it has me thinking about my post op diet. I’m currently working a very demanding job, where every other month I’m working 80 hour work weeks for a month at a time. In the next few months I will also be starting night shifts as well (anticipate 3 months of night shifts per year). In preparation for the surgery, I’ve taken two weeks off pre op, and am taking 8 weeks off post op, but my biggest worry is the time after that. Last year my worst food months by far were the long hours working, where I felt I had very little time to do anything, much less prep food. Does anyone have experience with working long hours and how they kept up with their post op diet? -

That's a good point that I haven't thought of. I'm on pureed foods now as well so yesterday I went walking after lunch because it sat a bit heavy in my stomach. That really helped. Nice to exercise without needing to get the helmet, the bike locks, making sure it's locked near a CCTV camera etc. Just my own foot power and walking tunes. (Iron Maiden yesterday, will switch it up today) -
How can I intake more protein and more calories without eating a huge amount of food throughout the day, all day long? It's almost impossible for me to get in 3 meals a day, and small snacking all day isn't possible either. So what are some ways I can get in extra protein without heavy shakes/smoothies? Or some meals/snacks that have a lot of protein and/or calories in them, but aren't a huge amount of food (if that makes sense)! Thanks for the help in advance!

I didn’t eat it in all one sitting but through out the day. I’ve been having hunger issues. I still have 5oz of the dinner left. I didn’t say I was portioning the puree out because I got lazy to type it all.

Salmon chick pea salad. Small bowl and it’s a cake fork, ate about half! It’s great to be back to real food again!! 😁 -
Congrats! I had my testing earlier this week. Everything went well and I'm ready to go for Tuesday! Liver shrink is HARD. I'm fine all day long, but really struggling when it comes to dinner time when I can actually eat real food and not just a protein shake. I feel like I'm eating the same boring things every day. I think I'd almost rather being in purely shakes, because at least that I can vary the flavor of. @one more time, I wonder if it has to do with BMI? Maybe your bmi is lower and the size of your liver won't be as much of an issue?? I know bc my bmi was over 50, that's why I needed 3 weeks of liver shrink instead of my Dr's usually two week rx of it.

can you live entirely off protein the shakes??
NeonRaven8919 replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree with this. I'm about 4 weeks post op. According to my plan, I can start soft foods on Monday. But I've struggled with purees and eating too fast so I've gone back to liquids and protein shakes. I'm honestly kind of scared of moving to soft foods and even more scared of moving to solid foods. I think if you're going to use shakes and things to supplement your diet, Meal Replacement shakes are a better alternative to protein shakes as they also have more vitamins. While on my LSD, I would mix the chocolate slimfast with some chocolate protein powder and little skimmed milk to disguise the taste of the slimfast, but also to give it a little more protein. I would not WANT to live on those long term, but occasionally, I think can still have a place in the diet if you're in a rush or not feeling well enough to cook. -
Going back a step?
NeonRaven8919 replied to NeonRaven8919's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! I've been blending tuna and yohurt so it's about yoghurt consistency, but I wonder if purees weigh more. 4oz of liquid is fine, 4oz of puree is too much. I might try the guidance of 8 small mouthfuls. I have a small spoon that is smaller than a normal teaspoon so I will try that. -
Does anyone smoke post surgery, preferably wax. It seems to help after I eat if I'm having any discomfort, and I havnt gotten the munchies since surgery thank god. Plus I have more will power to give in to the food, I'm too excited to keep losing weight ! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

Adjusting to my new life
Bessieboop1981 replied to Bessieboop1981's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Spartan maker thankyou for your post it really give me something to think about. I have always hated being hungry too and I think my head is trying to control me again! I have always loved eating and even though I'm not craving junk food I think I am missing eating. I got into a habit of looking at recipes and looking at healthier food options online shopping. I am always thinking about food which is definitely not helping. Today I sat with my 'hunger' and found that if I waited a few minutes and diverted my attention away from food I was fine. The mind is such a powerful thing I can hardly believe it! My mind has tricked me into eating more and gaining weight my whole life and it's what has got me here! So I need to change it up and use sone CBT practises to push away the intrusive food thoughts. Thank you so much you really helped me to see this after reading your reply!
