  1. Lap Band 10/25/2013 - Can't tolerate broth nor sugar free popsicles. Yesterday afternoon, Monday, 29th first episode of attempting vomiting. Dry heaves x6 along with sweaty skin and feeling weak. Tuesday morning my husband went to store and got Ensure Clear for me to drink. So far I have had 2. Did I mention how much I hate water? Always have, guess I always will but must struggle on. Still feeling bloated. Taking Phazyme for gas and passing but bloat back up again. Shoulder strap pain from being "blowed up" doesn't feel good but at least it doesn't scare me............................

    Harder Than I Thought

I had mine on 10/18 also, same doc as marketing dude (even rode to the airport with him, that's where I met him). I have some pain and gas and shoulder pain but walking helps tremendously. Just walk slow around your home every bit helps. Everybody is different and you will be great in no time!
  3. Since your starting BMI was a 43, I think you are probably with me in the "little big girl" category. Folks who have more to lose will lose faster; they just will. But, since you are starting smaller, you will still get to your goal fairly quickly. I have set my expectations at losing 10 lbs per month; If I hit something close to that, I will be thrilled. And hey, at that rate, in December, I should be a size 6. I haven't been a size 6 since I was 17 years old, so I guess I can wait another eight months. Remember, you didn't put this on overnight, it won't go away overnight either. The sleeve is a tool, not a magic wand.
  4. I got my 6th fill yesterday. Tonight I was able to eat a turkey burger with veggies. No bread. Is this ok? How long should I wait before eating solid food after getting a fill? I am at 6.2cc in a 10 cc band. Very little restriction. No weight loss in the past month. I am ready to lose some pounds. What I am doing wrong?
  5. I was banded 8/01/11 and it was a God send. Things were going slowly but steadily. In January I started having severe heartburn/reflux issues and no matter what pill, liquid med, ect I tried I got no relief. I was in so much pain I went to the er. I was admitted and my surgeon removed all the fill from my band. After a 5 day stint in the hospital, I had an egd done, protonix, dilauded, pepcid by IV I started to feel a lot better. I was told I had an esophageal erosion. I was given another med for that. I stayed with no fill for about 2 months the first 2 fills were fine just no restriction. So last week I went in and had another cc added. I am now up to 3. But again here comes the same pain I was dealing with in January. My GI doc said it had nothing to do with the band. Does ANYONE else have this issue???? Also I burp constantly....I heard thats a sign of a slippage with the band. I am terrified. I would love any advice you can provide! Thanks all and God bless.
  6. I had to do a physician supervised diet for six months prior as well. You can do this! I was able to lose 10 lbs, my requirement was 15, but was still approved. Here are some tips: -log your food! Myfitnesspal is a great tool. The more support you have the better, you're not alone. My username is westcomk -give Protein shakes a whirl, maybe one a day to get used to them for your pre-op and/or post-op protocol. I've bought them from the nutrisystem website, canisters off of amazon, and at Walmart. You can also buy extracts in the baking aisle to help switch it up. I had a coconut banana chocolate shake last night and a peppermint chocolate this morning (I'm on my pre-op 10 day/500 cals a day liquid diet right now) -find the exercise that you enjoy. I'm horrible at following this advice. I HATE exercising. I find it discouraging, annoying and pretty much all things negative. But I recently joined a gym with a pool and found I love swimming. Any exercise will help! -filling meals: protein, protein, protein! I liked to buy low carb tortilla shells and pack small tupperware containers of refried Beans, diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, salsa, taco sauce, and I would make ground turkey with taco seasoning. Very filling! I'm not sure what you like so that's just one idea. But another tool to use is Pinterest, it has a TON of recipes and good fitness/health ideas -practice chewing and slowing down your meals! It'll help with the prep! -BE KIND TO YOURSELF! If you fall off of the wagon, get back up. We are all human, but hold yourself accountable. You can do this -Water, water, water! It'll curb your appetite. Even if you pee 50 times a day (drove me crazy at first) -enjoy the journey and don't look back! You're brave for taking this step and we are all here to support you. Maggie

    Loss

Everyone is so different & loses at different rates. Most people I've seen on here based on their signatures, lose anywhere from 10 - 30 lbs the first month depending on how much they have to lose & such. People who are more overweight generally lose more than those who have less to lose, but even that isn't always true. There are too many factors that go into each of us losing. It's important not to compare yourself to others & also to take measurements & not just weight. Sometimes the scale won't move, but the inches will. It's important to rejoice in your own journey and not focus on comparing to others though. Personally, I lost 12.6 lbs in my 2-week pre-op diet and 18 lbs my first month after surgery. I'm 5'8.5" & started with about 130 lbs to lose. Again, we're all so different though that even if two people are the same height and weight, they'll lose at different rates.

    no longer morbidly obese

30 is obese. 35 is severely obese and 40+ is morbidly obese. you can use a chart or roughly: 702*(weight in pounds)/(height in inches squared) so 279 for 5 foot 10 is (702*279)/4900 = 40 the 702 is there because BMI originally in metric units and the 702 used when doing lbs and inches instead.

ReadytoMaintain- I basically fit 12's & 14's depending on cut, material, and style of the garment. Sizes vary greatly, but I don't mind trying on clothes, so that's okay with me. I'm still having trouble convincing myself that this weight will not come back as soon as I'm done losing it like every other time. So far I've gotten rid of 24's through 16's. I think I might have to hold onto my 14's for a while, once I'm out of that size, until I can get my head around it or find someone in need (that always makes it easier). Congratulations on your loss so far, it won't be long before you're posting about your size 10's zipping up!

    liquid diet

Im doing a preop diet also. Im on day 10 of the diet, and have lost 11 lbs. I bet you can do it too. I personally think that two weeks is too long, let alone 16 days. Best wishes!

    Protein Shake

I have tryed so many and can't seem to gag any of them down . I know I will have a 10 day before diet but every protein drink shot scoop makes me gag . I'm starting to worrie about this
  12. Milk of magnesia has helped me deal with any bathroom issues. (If you use it, just take a sip or two and not a complete dose. I learned that lesson the hard way the first time...) And the "three week stall" is quite real. I hit it, on schedule, right at the beginning of week 3. I lost about 2 pounds total over the next 2 weeks, and then it started to pick up again. I've lost about 10 pounds in the last 10-11 days, so it doesn't last forever. Feel better.
  13. First off take a deep breath and realize on the internet you can't always believe everything you read. Part of the issue with message boards and internet sites is many of the people who report are those with complications. I understand fear and regret, I had some myself but this is literally the best choice I've ever made. I've been overweight since I was 12, morbidly obese most my adult life and now for the first time in years I have my freedom back. I had the sleeve 12/30/16. I've had no issues with my surgery and my recovery was smooth and as easy as to be expected after major surgery. My physical pain lasted about 2 weeks with minor aches lasting about a month. I returned to work at the 2 week mark and other than being tired, I had no issues going back to work. The worst part for me was the gas pain, which you can help minimize with gas meds and walking as well as pain where my drain was but that was removed on Day 2 post op. I also has nausea on Day 1 but that is a side effect of anesthesia for me and had it after every surgery I've had. I was allowed to begin sipping about 24 hours after surgery and had no issues taking small sips. I had no swallowing issues, no pain with swallowing and have yet to have an issue eating or drinking as I move through the stages. I did have some minor heartburn early on and was prescribed Protonix once a day for 3 months. I no longer have had any issues in terms of heartburn. It's was a minor issue for me and taking a pill once a day didn't effect my life negatively or set me back. To this day, I've been able to eat almost everything I did pre surgery (though I chose to avoid unhealthy foods). I've also been able to tolerate straws, caffeine and carbonation with no issues. I also enjoy going out to eat on a regular basis with my friends and family. I've lost 101 pounds so far and wouldn't change a single thing. I had no co-morbidities but it would have only been a manner of time as I was at the highest weight of my life. My lab work (blood sugar on the climb, cholesterol was high, thyroid was off) was not great the last time I had a physical and my body ached. Now I'm in perfect health, just had my yearly physical and I was 100 pounds down since last year, my lab work was perfect and I feel 10 years younger. As for sleeve effectiveness, I have not heard that it's not recommended for weightloss. In fact at my clinic it's replaced all over forms of weightloss surgery in popularity. I have people in my local support group who are 3-5 years out and have success still.

    So sad about Hair Loss

I feel your pain, and here's my sob story: My hair finally stopped falling out at about 12 months, but all is not well. At about 10 months out, it was still falling out and then it started breaking! These high Protein diets can do something to the hair, especially if you use the wrong shampoo/conditioner. So, not only is my hair super thin now, it has broken so much that it looks like I've cut 6 to 8 inches off. I've switched products, so I'm hoping it will recover. But, you know what? I say to myself, "I'd rather be getting healthy and weigh a lot less with stupid looking hair than weigh 350 pounds with awesome hair!" Hair grows back... LOL
  15. I am curious as to how much time you need to take off work after surgery. I have a desk job but I work about 10 hours a day and I need to be quite alert and able to think. If my energy level is low, effecting concentration, I won’t be able to do anything - so might as well plan for a longer leave. Would 3 weeks be enough time?
  16. I lost 12 then I quickly gained back 5. So now I am just around 10-11. My first fill is Monday and boy I can't wait.
  17. For some people (very few..) just having the band placed around their stomach provides adequate restriction and in turn their appetite is dimmed and they lose weight. This was certainly not the case for me. I was WIDE OPEN after surgery and was able to eat like pre-band. I am happy for those with automatic restriction but am pretty amazed that the band alone can provide that type of restriction. I felt nothing from my unfilled band. ~Liz~ banded 03/10/06 Dr.Ortiz 241/197/150 5'7'' current fill-2.7 cc
  18. I am gettin so distressed over this whole thing. I lost a few lbs before the surgery (like 5) I have followed everything exactly and held once I reached 10 lbs minus. I had my first fill the end of Feb which was 4 months out. Still no restriction. I do have difficulty with exercise because both of my knees are bad - however I do walking exercise in the pool 3 x a week. I just keep hovering around the same weight. I put the @#$$%% scale away for a while because I was obsessing. I went down about 7 lbs but put it right back on. I'm not loosing but not gaining either. I am frustrated. I go in for another fill in two weeks. I certainly hope that it helps b ecause I feel just like I did prior to the fill.

Oh Tiff-you are so way past a 16. I bet you'll be shocked with how small you go with your new clothes...I can't wait to hear all about your NSV's after tomorrow's trip. You are doing such a great job and will be at goal in no time and then have to buy even smaller clothes. Itstime-I have never been in a 10 in my whole life. By the time I left the girl's husky clothes, I remember going right to a woman's 14. There might have been sizes between there, but I was in upper elementary/middle school and honestly don't remember this size. I know I was a 16 by my freshman year in HS, got to a 12/14 my sophomore year and then back to 16 and so on. I also know this must be a 10 that runs super large, but hey, I'll take it.

A 10! I haven't seen that for decades. Good for you deedee. I can't wait to throw out all my clothes. Just maybe a few jeans, but more than likely outdated for sure. Make a clean sweep...

    Loss

Hi all I am having my op in 10 days and was wondering how much people lost in their first month?? X
  22. Oh holy buzzards, this is NOT easy! I've drank about 20 oz of my clear protein. And MAYBE 10 OZ OF WATER so far. This is not easy at all. Every sip I take makes me feel full... Is this normal?
  23. I was sleeved Monday. I spent two nights in the hospital, I was supposed to go home Tuesday, but was very nauseous so I stayed an extra night. The first day in the hospital. I'm not sure how much I drank, but it probably was only like 10-20oz of water diluted cranberry juice and a diluted protein drink. This morning before I left I probably only got in like 10oz or so. But since I got home I've managed to get down an 11oz premier protein drink and about 15 oz of crystal light. It's hard taking very little sips. But I've only been home like 5 hours. So I guess that's ok. I guess it's going to take time. I'm not hungry at all so I'm forcing myself. But the bariatric coordinator and my surgeon at my hospital made sure to drive in the fact that you have to drink in order to stay hydrated or you're going to end up in the ER for dehydration. Good luck

    Psych eval nightmare

Their concern is likely the fear of addiction transfer. A fair amount (I've seen numbers saying around 10%) of people after surgery develop drinking problems. So she's probably looking at if from the standpoint of occasional drug use (even if it's just weed) and a previous phase of uncontrolled drinking. Just remember that they are looking out for your well being. You can find another pysch to go to for a second opinion, but if you feel you have real issues to address now is the time to do it. Don't simply go looking for somebody to sign off without seriously taking into consideration of what is best for you long term.

    Feeling really scared

I can relate! I'm getting sleeved tomorrow at 9:45am and I'm scared, nervous, and jittery. I just have to keep focused on why I'm doing this. I want my life back. I want to go skiing with my 10 year old this winter. I used to love to ski, but haven't been since around 1992 -- I just got too fat to fit in a ski boot (I have thick ankles) and I was afraid of tearing up my knees. I don't get to see him all the time -- he lives with my ex in California. He comes and visits for a week or so over winter break and for a month during the summer. We also see each other every other month or so for a weekend. Last year, he came up here over Christmas break, and I took him up to our local ski area twice -- he did really well in his lessons. I want to go skiing with him so bad. I believe that with this surgery, I will be able to do that. Good luck to all of us this week!
