Its been over a year since my surgery. The past few months I've been experiencing constant pain on my right side, lower back, neck, nauseous after eating, some constipation, bloating. More recently, headaches and not sleeping well. Over past few weeks pain has increase particularly at night. My primary doctor has ruled out problems with pacreus, liver. I'm doing my own research to cover all basis. After a brief discussion with my gastric surgent he didn't think I had a leak, reason being that its not very common so far after surgery. I have experience a number of things with my health that was not very common and it took doctors a very hard time to diagnose. No one has said that after a years time a gastric sleeve leak can't happen, It was said, it was not common. So I continue to search for answers.

    August surgery buddies!

Between the cramps and fatigue I have been a hot mess. Showing signs of slowing down so I’m hopeful that I’ll soon start to feel better and maybe then see some movement on the scale again when this wraps up. Trying hard to remember this is a sign my body is getting healthier but in the last 4 weeks I’ve only had 7-10 days WITHOUT my period so I’m a little worried what the next few months will be like. Hope you start getting some relief and feeling better soon.

    Just curious

Keto is HIGH fat, low carbs and moderate protein. Bariatric is HIGH protein, and from there depends on the surgery team. Some are low carb/sugar low fat. Others are a BALANCED low fat/low sugar diet. Mine is VERY balanced, I have never heard anyone on my team tell us we can't have carbs. Through all the classes, appointments and Nutritionists follow ups. They all say the same thing, balanced diet while making sure we get our protein first and then veggies, if you want or have "room" then have the carb. Understand this is only my opinion: I do not think it is realistic to think someone is going to stay "keto" or "extremely low carb" for the rest of their life. Isn't that how we all YO-YO? By doing extreme diets that we realistically cannot maintain long term? I have lost 100+ lbs 4 different times. (I know, ridiculous) The last time I even had skin removal surgery and still gained it back because eating chicken and broccoli every single day was not realistic! This is what convinced me to finally have WLS. I went through the classes for pre-op still hesitant to have WLS and just figured what do I have to loose by learning more about it in a formal manor. I learned that while some things we might not be able to eat, there was really not the restriction of foods like I heard by travel of words. Even on my worst days, I haven't been even able to eat more than 1200 calories. it really is the restriction of capacity that makes the HUGE difference from a diet to WLS. Eating healthy (most of the time) was never a problem for me. My problem was ALWAYS being hungry, eating 3 servings of chicken rather than 1. Eating 3/4 slices of pizza rather than a half a of slice without eating the outside crust. Again, my opinion and what works for me may not work for you or the next person. I think we all have to figure out what works for us and go from there. Everyone is so different and every bariatric team/center is just as different. I had this surgery so I can eat like a normal person and not like a 400 lb person. I am almost 6 months post op and when I eat around people, rarely does anyone notice my diet being different than their own. I think maybe 3 times someone (who doesn't know I had WLS) has commented about what I was eating. You do you girl, work with your team. Find out what works best for you and run with it! Modify it as you go if needed. We are all on the a different version of the same journey. We got this!! (Sorry for my long post, I got carried away)
  5. Hello my name is Kelsey and I’m new to this website/forum. I came on here to seek advice/friends to help me out. I have been struggling so so bad lately. I had weight loss surgery 11.28.2015 and I was 400 pounds when I did. After about a year and a half I had lost a lot of weight, I got down to 170 pounds. I was happy at this weight, healthy, had less back/foot/ankle/knee pain, etc, you knew the drill. Until Covid i kept most of it off. In the past 3 years I have noticed a steady incline in weight again, so much so that I got back up to 270 at one point. i went back to my surgeon, dr Scott in search of maybe a revision. What I got instead was a speech on how sncking is bad etc, things I already knew and he told me to do nothing but shakes for ten days. I did pretty well on my shakes, drinking 4-5 a day and got down to 253. Of course, when I started eating again, I’ve gained weight back and I’m back to 265. I am so unhappy, and stressed out about this and I’m not sure what to do. i did have lbs done, my thyroid is acting up and my b12 is not absorbing correctly, vit D low, etc, im thinking hypothyroidism is the main cause of my weight gain and low energy but my surgeon wants me to see a pcp about starting meds. I don’t have a pcp, so I made an appt (I made this appt one month ago) but I’m having to wait until OCTOBER 25 to see the pcp. I just don’t know what else to do. i do have history of bipolar and depression, which causes me to stress eat. I’m fighting this very hard, but I feel like I would do better if I had friends or online even pals to help me through this. Anyway. That’s me. I need help, obv, so if anyone feels inclined, reach out to me. We can exchange whatever info we need to stay in touch.
  6. I finally found some before photos. The first photo was 2 months before the surgery. I was 145+ kg. Second was 3 months after the surgery when my clothes started to get baggy. Last one was taken today. Pants size went from 52" - 44" - 38"

Is this normal? Does it go away?

Yeah, your tummy can be pretty fussy & sensitive for a while. Plus the temporary changes to your sense of smell & taste can make finding foods you can tolerate a bit of a challenge. There even may be odd times when your tummy just says no to something you’ve eaten without issue then it’s fine again a day or so later. I used to say my tummy was like a tantrum throwing, pernickety 2 year old. Eggs, chicken breast, beef can be difficult for many. Don’t give up any food doesn’t like. Just leave it for a week or two or so & then try again. Or try a less coarse, more moist cut like minced beef or chicken thigh. It does get easier.

    September surgery buddies!!

I was told to expect 2 weeks minimum, and I work from home. The issue isn't pain, it's mostly due to tiredness and brain fog. Also, it's super hard to get your fluids/protein in, and that will just be harder if you're trying to work as well. Can you take short-term disability?

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm taking 4 weeks but I have a pretty physical job with basically no time to eat or drink so I gotta take the financial hit, or I'd probably pass out. You'll probably be fine. I'm 5 days post and if I had an office job, I probably could have gone to work yesterday. Can't say if productivity would be great, but you do what you got to.
  10. I only planned a week but that is because we work Monday-thurs but I hope to be able to do other things by Thursday

    September surgery buddies!!

How long is everyone taking off work? My surgery is Thursday the 29th and I need to be back at work by that Monday... is that possible? For context I work in an office sitting for 8 hours with the freedom to get up and walk around as much as I want... I noticed people on fb were taking weeks off and so I'm nervous. I kinda HAVE to go back to work...can't afford time off.

    September surgery buddies!!

Sending hugs and positive vibes to all having surgery this week. I go for my one week post op follow up tomorrow.
  13. My first week was clear liquids and protein drinks weren’t allowed. This week I have been allowed, but they are just sickeningly sweet to me. I was able to get down a third of an Atkins shake by cutting the whole shake with about 1/4 cup of heavy cream. Mostly I’m living on Creamy chicken soup broth and it hits the spot. So good. Before surgery, I loved the Gatorade Zero with Protein. Now I hate it. Ditto on sf pudding…yogurt…protein shakes…anything sweet. All I want in this life is a fried egg with half a piece of toast.
  14. My birthday is next month and coincides with my projected second week of pureed, as a reward for staying on plan I'm gonna buy a new phone lmao. A local tandem skydiving place had a 160lb weight limit for my height, so naturally I decided when I hit that, I'm jumping out a plane.

    September surgery buddies!!

I'm honestly a bit surprised so many of you are trying to (or supposed to), drink protein shakes so soon? In my program I'm supposed to do clear liquids only for the first 3 days. Considering that dehydration is the number one reason for hospital readmission, I think it's critical to stay on top of your clear liquids. The protein is important, but probably a bit less so.

    September surgery buddies!!

I take 4 sips from the 1oz cup with about 3-5 minutes between each sip. I came home and took a usual gulp from an Evian bottle and it made me scream out. It is learning a whole new way do eating/drinking!

    September surgery buddies!!

I’m day 3 post-op and I’m barely making the liquid goals 1 oz at a time. I have a checklist and I literally tick them off each time. Day 1 I slept a lot. Day 2 was a lot of pain. Today is a little soreness and trying to get cream soup or some protein shake down is pretty tough. I was surprised at how little I can drink….no kidding but it is TINY SIPS out of a 1oz plastic cup otherwise the esophagus and stomach spasm like the dickens. I plan to start adding protein supplements to my soups starting tomorrow.

Is this normal? Does it go away?

Wow, interesting, I still can't eat lettuce but I guess I'll see how that goes with me. And I'll wait a week or two to try chicken and eggs again, and see how it goes. Thanks for replying! Sent from my STK-LX3 using BariatricPal mobile app

Eggs seem to be one of those foods that bother some people and not at all for others - I had scrambled eggs in the hospital and boiled eggs the first week home (on the plan...) with no problem. It's just one of those things - for some it may be lettuce (when it comes to that phase) or beef or who knows what. As suggested, try it again in a couple weeks to see how it does - that was one of our program's basic rules - test foods one at a time for tolerance and if one doesn't work, try it again in a couple weeks.

    Stretching Exercises

I agree, talk to your doctor. Most doctors want you to avoid any form of exercise other than walking for at least a couple of weeks and some even longer. Also, I would not call most of your examples "stretching exercises". At the very least, they'd fall under what we used to call calisthenics in the old days, but more properly fall squarely into the bodyweight strength training realm. Your toe-touch example is the only one that might be considered a stretch, but it's highly dependent on how you're doing it.

    Stretching Exercises

Listen to your body and take it easy. Do partial movements without too much weight engaged.  Honestly, I say wait 8 weeks. Then all systems go!
  23. Good luck to everyone who has surgery tomorrow!! You all are going to do great! Remember to sip, sip, sip your water! My surgery was two weeks ago and I’m only down 10 lbs so far but it’s a marathon; not a race. I had a revision from VSG to RNY. No acid reflux! Hurray!!!😁🎉

    Stretching Exercises

I think I'd probably hold off on the sit ups and toe touching until you see the surgeon. Not sure about leg lifts. I wasn't supposed to do anything other than walk the first four weeks. You could always call the clinic and ask...
  25. Tomorrow at 5:30 as well!!! I have not cheated a single time on the pre op diet of 3 shakes and clear liquid since 8/31 and have lost 23 pounds…
