    Folks Who Have Had Complications

I think that all sounds pretty standard. My insurance would only cover the surgery if done at a COE. My surgeon didn't have me do the injections pre-op, but he did have a sonogram of my legs done to make sure I didn't have any issues with my veins. If I did have a problem, I may have had to do them before surgery. As it was, I did them for 10 days after surgery and had another sonogram done of my legs one week post-op. If I still had my gallbladder, they would to an ultrasound on it at six months. If you really want the sleeve, I would push for it. Personally, I think it's the best option. My nephew's wife had the bypass done in March and I was sleeved in August. She's lost 65 pounds and I've lost 68. Of course, she's much shorter than me so that is a variable but I saw how much she was eating over the holidays and I don't think it bodes well for her long term success. Hopefully, the sleeve will continue to give me good restriction for the long term. And by the way, my daughter has a friend that just had her gallbladder removed and has been admitted to the hospital twice with complications. So it can happen from any procedure. You just have to trust that your surgeon is the best possible one for your procedure and pay attention to any warning signs your body gives you. Good luck!
  2. I have my pre op appointment in a couple days. They are shooting for April 30 or May 1 for surgery. I am very aware that this is going to be a lot of work. I am hearing all these stories of weight gain after bypass surgery that I am so afraid I will be one of the statistics that do gain it back. As many of you all know the feeling of diets not working, I can't help but keep asking myself what will make this any different? I know me getting the sleeve is different then bypass, but I am still very scared. Any advice would be so appreciated.
  3. So when i was in for my first fill last week, I had a lady that had the procedure done the same day say a comment to me that I wasnt sure how to take. My surgeon does the post op class for "how to understand fill process" on the 6 week mark and all the people that had the procedure done that day comes in to the class and then goes and has thier fill done right afterwards. There were 4 of us that was banded on 4/14. So I have met these people twice in the last month and 1/2. Both at classes. This one lady is kinda big and walks with a cane. But I could tell that she has done well and she seems to be moving around better than she did the last time I saw her. Well we got to talking a little bit before the class and then again right after our fills were done as we sat next to each other while we were sipping on our waters. We talked about how the fills went and all that. Then she said "not to be mean, but why did you have the procedure done, you dont even look overweight" I wasnt quite sure how to respond. I just said that I definately needed it done and that I was happy that I had done it. My bmi was 37, which makes me severely obese. I would say this lady is probably under morbid obese. I kinda switched the subject after that to something else. Im just wondering if this is the norm on how people feel about someone that is not over 40 bmi having the procedure done. I hope I am not opening up a big can of worms asking this question. Either way, would not bother me because I am so glad that I did it. When she said it, I almost wanted to say "well why didnt you get the bypass done" But I didnt think that would be nice at all to say and I am not a person that would hurt someone just to hurt them. It is up to her what procedure she wanted to have done, just like it was up to me on having this procedure done. That was just a quick thing that went through my mind when I was trying to decide if I was offended or not by her comment. Anyway, was just thinking about it and was curious if anyone has had a comment like this before.

    Medicaid Question

I have heard that band is the first step in bypass for people over a certain weight. With that aside I'm not sure you have confidence in this surgeon . I interviewed 2 surgeons before making my decision. You will be going to the doctor for the rest of your life. And if you have red flags now they are there for a reason. Take a step back and look at the options best for you.
  5. I had VSG on 5/12/14. I converted from sleeve to bypass on 7/1 because of severe reflux. My reflux was gone the day after surgery. I was basically at goal when I converted and my doctor told me not to expect to lose much weight as a result of the surgery. I gained weight right before the surgery but am now almost back to goal (4lbs to go). I had to go through the 6 week food progression again but basically eating is the same. I do not eat any refined sugar as I have no desire to test whether or not I'll dump. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I had the sleeve done in August 2014 & lost 70lbs just like you, and gained 20lbs back. I was still very far off from my goal weighing 260 at the time ....I tried diet, and diet pills and the most I would lose was 10-15 pounds which was super frustrating. My doctor decided it was time to convert me to the bypass. Like volleyball girl said ^^^ there is less restriction with the bypass. I can sip sip sip and not feel full or discomfort. The recovery is longer though for sure...more painful and lingers .....I can have soft foods now and I enjoyed my scrambled egg and ate very slowly and chewed it to mush. Today I was rushing when I had my egg and I felt really full 3/4 of the way and threw out the rest. I also felt uncomfortable & pain as well. Won't be doing that again. I also had a small size cottage cheese snack. I feel satisfied after I eat, nor really that full feeling as I did with the sleeve. We shouldn't eat until we feel that full feeing anyways, we should just feel satisfied good luck and you will do just fine ! Yes the whole liquid thing is a pain but stay focused on the bigger picture . Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  7. Hi Everyone, I had a vsg back in 2016, I’ve had regain and want to have a revision. Of course insurance won’t cover unless I have gerd or other issues. I did my surgery with GHI/Emblem Health. If I switched insurance to Aetna or another insurance would I get approved because I didn’t do the 1st surgery with them? I’m hoping someone can help me with this question 😞
  8. So I went to my surgeon on 7/2. He said that I have 2 ruptured hernias in my stomach. One is above.my belly button the other about 5in to the left of it. Theyre gonna repair em both and do my gastric bypass same time. Until then....he gave me pain meds to use for the extreme discomfort. Is anyone else having this done?

    hernia w/ gastric bypass? anyone?

I had a ventral hernia surgery last july. Then I went to see about the gastric bypass and had a endoscopy and they found a hyatal hernia so they plan to repair it while they do the gastric bypass. I think I am falling apart..
  10. Hello I am in hopes that someone out there can help me with this In 2004 I was diagnosed with Paranoid Depression and have been on anti Depressants for that since then. In 2006 and at 313pounds I had Gastric Bypass surgery my lowest weight was 167 and slowly I began to gain weight til I hit 280 I am now losing weight again down to 268 but I have had to retire from my job driving school bus for 11 years I have been diagnosed with Fibomialgia and I have arthritis in every joint including my neck. The dr. has has to switch my depression meds because my pain was over taking my anti depression meds. This is my Question there are so many meds out there that gastric bypass patients like me cannot take and the dr has no idea what to give me. I feel like I am screamming and nobody will hear or help me. What can I do and any advise on what I can take. I have tried OTC Patches OTC rubs. All anyone says is take Tylonal
  11. Hello. I’m new to this forum. Got a lapband in 2011. Overall it’s been successful. Starting weight was 255, I now weigh 198. My weight is stable. But…. I am now having a large amount of reflux and nighttime coughing. I’m worried about my esophagus and I am starting to consider revision surgery. But… my BMI is now 33. Which is great, except I’m discovering that is too low to qualify for revision surgery through insurance. But if I get the lapband taken out without any other help, the weight will not stay off. And I’d much prefer to just have one surgery instead of two. I’m only about 6 lbs under my insurance’s minimum BMI of 35. What do people do in this case? Wear ankle weights to the doctor? Just try to gain the 6lbs through milkshakes? Any advice appreciated.
  12. Hi guys--my name is Amanda. I'm 29 and it's been a long road to this point. I've battled my weight my whole life, and finally i'm here. My bypass is scheduled for this Saturday, December 10th. I'm super excited for the journey ahead, but since it's getting so close i'm feeling scared at the same time--just basically the fact that i have to have surgery...haha. Did you guys feel the same way before you had yours? I've read some posts here that kind of make me feel like i'm not the only one. AND...i'm on my pre-op liquid diet...which for me is only protein shakes, broth and clear liquids...and i'm STARVING!! It'll be worth it, i know. Thanks for listening & i wish all of you the best of luck!

    Help please

I don't even care about Lopez anymore. I am happy with the doc I found for my after care and will continue to go to him. Lopez was OK for the surgery but his aftercare sucked big time. I had a port issue that he told me would go away with more weight loss. My new doc said that it was Lopez' technique that caused my port issues. So I had a port revision surgery in July to correct his technique problem. If I get a call from Lopez or his staff then I will expect the world to end soon.
  15. Thank You, Paula. It's pretty tough to eat your words, which is what I've had to do, but as soon as I'm off puree's, serve it up, I'm ready to eat them. (Because I swore anytype of bypass was the DEBIL!)

    Why Not Gastric Bypass?

A friend of mine went through the same thing and we tried to come up with a reason why she couldn't have bypass. She did fight it and got nowhere. They have their rules and if they don't offer banding they don't offer banding. Hers was TriCare. TriCare will be offering banding in the next year or so from what I hear.

    Why Not Gastric Bypass?

Also, there is NO way to look at the inside of the stomach after a bypass other than cutting it open. So if you have stomach problems a gastroscopy (tv camera going down the throat) will not be possible. The first surgeon I saw refuses to do bypasses for this very reason. Peace Out T~:hippie:

    Open vs Closet Bander Questions

Definately open!!!! I love to talk about it and answer questions for the most part. Although when your open and you don't lose as fast as the girl with the gastric bypass people are usually thinking whatever you had done is not working. I hate that part of it.....

    Good bye group

Whatever you decide, PLEASE make sure your insurance company does NOT have a 1 weight loss surgery procedure per LIFETIME, or policy period exclusion. With the recent study out in 2010 showing 1 in 3 band patients need another surgery and it's typically a revision, you'll be stuck with a band. I have appeal letters, and there are SOOOOOOOOOOO many people on obesityhelp.com that had the same rule with their insurance, they appealed it and WON for the sleeve. I had the band because VSG was not available when I had to choose. So, believe me, I do understand in choosing the band, BUT VSG was NOT even offered in my area, along with government ran insurance through the military, I had to tackle 2 hurdles to get VSG. I say do NOT give up, do not settle for the complications that come with the band lifestyle.

    No weight loss

I'm 10 wks out from a band revision. I lost 18 lbs (I started at 174 so I knew Id lose slower) 5he first 6 wks. Haven't lost a lb in 4 wks. I'm traveling now visiting family in a different state. Guess I'm using that as an excuse to eat crap. Not very much crap, but crap nonetheless. My sleeve tolerates everything but ice cream (including burgers, fries, corndogs {went to the fair} and Cookies. Haven't tried pizza yet bbut I'm sure it'll go down just fine). I wish my sleeve would reject all of these things and make the right choices for me but alas, I've figured out I have to make the decisions for my sleeve, not the other way around. I'm happy I can only eat 1/3 of an In and Out Burger, maybe 6 fries, maybe 1/3 of a corndog. Otherwise Id be gaining all I lost back. Hopefully when I get back home and all becomes normal again I will make better choices. At least I'm hoping...

    Reflux Question

I know a couple of people who had the gastric bypass due to them having reflux problem. And they said it went away. Some people actually do have reflux issues after having the sleeve. Just my experience.

  25. Hi there....did you have to pay for the revision surgery or were you able to get it covered?
