7 years, lost 120, got rebanded!

Wow, what an inspiration you are! I had to call my daughter over to see your pics. Thank you for posting your story, especially about your decision to be rebanded. Often we only here of the people who had slips and decide to revise to something else. Thanks again!

    UHC - BMI 40 w/no comorbidities

I hope this is your coverage: From: https://www.unitedhealthcareonline.com From the home page, scroll to the bottom, type in bariatric, it is the second article. Bariatric surgery is proven for the following: 1. Class III obese (BMI > 40 kg/m2) 2. Class II obese (BMI 35-39.9 kg/m2) in the presence of one or more of the following comorbidities: • Type 2 diabetes • Cardiovascular disease (e.g., stroke, myocardial infarction, stable or unstable angina pectoris, hypertension or coronary artery bypass) • Life-threatening cardiopulmonary problems (e.g., severe sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, obesity-related cardiomyopathy) Surgical revision or a second bariatric surgery is proven for inadequate weight loss if the
  3. islandmom, mine isn't a revision, but we are being sleeved on the same day. I know this is what will work for us!!
  4. I am scheduled for a revision from Lapband to sleeve on September 17th and the closer I get, I am feeling more and more nervous. For two reasons: Reason One: I am AFRAID of suffering a terrible complication. (I have read some real scary stories on here and all I can do is hope and pray that these poor souls will feel better soon.) But if I am doing this surgery to enrich my life, it is complete irony to come out of it suffering with chronic pain or end up on a feeding tube. Reason Two: I am really note sure what to expect by way of restriction. Can anyone describe what Sleeve Restriction feels like after they are fully healed? Is it pain? Is it nausea? If you are banded can you describe the difference?
  5. I had my lap band done in May 2011 at the time I weighed 281 lbs. I was able to get down to 230 within 6 months but then just stalled out. In 2013 I got pregnant and had my daughter 2/25/15 but after having her I could not get back under 250. (I had extreme port pain the last few months of my pregnancy I think from my growing belly and stuff, some days I wanted to cut it out myself because it hurt so bad) So, I decided to have it converted to gastric bypass. I went into it like it was no big deal and thought I would be fine because I didn't have much pain when I had the band put in. But, on 3/19/15 I woke up in recovery is the worst pain on my left side where the port was. It's now been 6 days and I still hurt so bad. My right side doesn't hurt at all it's just the left. Has anyone else had the same problem if so how long did your pain last. It's making taking care of a 1 yr old who doesn't walk yet suck as I can't move without having sharp pain like I'm being ripped open. Oh they also had to remove my gallbladder as during pre-op testing they saw I had gallstones. On a side note I'm so glad I found this forum because I don't know anyone that has had revision surgery to know what is normal.
  6. My surgeon recommend the sleeve for me. They do all three procedures at the weight loss center where I go. He brought up a few key points that helped change my mind...1. I was worried about being able to have children and give good nutrients to the baby after my weight loss, he said I could do that with the sleeve. 2. Short term and long term maintenance - with the lap band, you have to go in for monthly fills to find your weight loss "sweet spot", plus he said that they are finding that many people have to have their lap bands removed after 5-10 years. 3. After researching and asking questions online, I have found so many people who have had to had lap band to sleeve revisions. They all wish they would have gotten the sleeve the first time. One last benefit of the sleeve is that the doctor said that you will lose your weight faster and lose more of it with the sleeve than with the lap band. This is just what I have found with my research, I hope this helps.
  7. I got the surgery at 174 lbs cuz my lapband slipped (started at 248 lbs almost 4 yrs ago) and I knew I'd gain every lb back that I had lost without anything. I probly wouldn't have gotten wls for 44 lbs. There's quite a few of us here that revised to sleeve from band at a lower bmi (mine was 28) but we still needed it.

    OK, so now what??!!

I just want to cry. Scratch that, i have cried. Today is 4 months since surgery (sort of, since I had surgery 10/29). I had a great first two months. Felt good, everything was going smoothly. Then the acid reflux started. A bit at first, then worse, even on 2 Nexium a day. OK, I could handle that. Then, about a month ago, the nausea started. I just can't deal with it. Seems to be getting worse every day. I feel worse now than I ever did before surgery. I can eat less now than when I started on solid foods. This is the first time I haven't been able to hit my protein goals since day 3 after surgery. I even have trouble getting in all of my liquids because I can't drink for forever after eating (maybe 1.5-2 hours). And I have to eat All.The.Time because I can eat so little at a time now. I'm doing my best, but the nurse is starting to worry they need to put in a PICC line to get fluids/nutrition in (luckily, she told me today she doesn't think that is necessary yet. Had an upper GI. They found a hernia, but saw no GERD. I got a hold of my doc's nurse. She'd talked to my doc. They don't really know what is causing it. She said they could do an endoscopy, but that he thinks he won't really find anything new. And he doesn't want to repair the hernia (again) until I lose more weight. Doc apparently wants to revise to bypass. But, for a number of reasons, I don't. Particularly since they don't really know what's wrong and can't tell me the bypass will help. I mean, I can barely eat now - and if bypass doesn't fix it I'll be even more malnourished than I am now. So, for now, he's prescribed a different reflux med, given me anti-nausea meds, and OK'ed me to lower my protein goals (protein supplements REALLY make me sick). my nurse keeps telling me that this isn't the rest of my life and they'll figure it out. But, I'm still worried and frustrated and sick as a dog. I'm not really looking for suggestions, or reasons I'm wrong not to want the bypass. My two close friends are having family emergencies and I don't want to burden them now. So I just need a space to let it out. Thanks. And really glad I have an appointment with my therapist on Tuesday.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

Bypass, I am going through alot of problems due to the sleeve. They are revising me to the bypass due to reflux and the hiatal hernia I got from the sleeve. My SD is October 15th, I just got my clearance from my physician on Friday. Sent from my SM-J337P using BariatricPal mobile app

    It Finally Happened

Good for you! I had my band revision to RNY on May 13,2014. Had the band since October 2007...bad experience for sure. The bypass is the best decision I have ever made for my health. I am down 85lbs (20 before surgery),not quite 6 months. I had a rough first month after surgery, but at week 5 everything fell into place. I have slowed down on weight loss the past 6 weeks, but it is still coming off about a pound a week. Rest up, do what the doc says and enjoy the journey.

    It Finally Happened

I am so happy for you. I am hoping to have my revision done the first of December. Iam ready to get rid of the lapband also.

    6 YEARS!

Hi Scott, I too have the band and have had some problems, I just went in for an EDG now I'm waiting for my Dr. To call, I lost really well at first, but after two years started having problems, I was down to 135 lbs, gained back about 25 lbs, I was at 189 starting weight, but I want to keep my band and have them do a revision and plication done know, yes it is hard but I did it and now what some thing that I can lose this weight and keep it off, with the plication, I was reading your story and whated to wish you and your family good luck!
  13. Hey everyone- I had my band to sleeve revision on May 30th..I've lost 20lbs and am feeling great. Today, being Day15, I am allowed yogurt, SF pudding, etc... I bought some greek yogurt and took a couple of VERY small bites of it and it had a hard time going down. I could feel it sitting there and it took several minutes to go down and was mildly uncomfortable. I gave up and went back to my protein shake. Like everyone else, I want to know if this is normal?? Should I just stick w/the shakes until it's easier, or just very, very slowly eat the yogurt? It was a 4 oz container and would probably take me at least an hour to eat..

    Diabetes

This is absolutely the reason for my revision to the VSG. I had gestational diabetes with my last baby (at 41) and it went (thanks to crazy amounts of exercise) until 3 years ago. I had blood tests every 6 months and I knew how it felt when it went up. I am unsure of the comparatives in the US but here in Canada I was 18 when I was diagnosed - way way too high. I started on 2 x Metformin - then went up to 4 a day - now I have added Victoza - a new injection (not insulin) and my numbers are still not great - and I walk at least 1 hour a day. I know its going to get worse - runs in the family (with the larger ones). I want to live and be healthy for my 9 year old - and I am excited to be getting my sleeve. Right now I have two options - waiting on finance for Dr Kelly OR an initial appointment through the Health Care System up here in September. Either way - I'm doin it!!! Thanks for this positive thread. Glenda PS Just to add that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes - so my ego doesn't require the sleeve - BUT my health definitely does!

    Hello All!

I am also a patient of Dr. Curry. I am having a band to sleeve revision on 8/9/11. Excited, but scared.. Afraid of failure and afraid of leaks...The band has not worked at all for me...was banded in 2007.

    Bypass to Sleeve?

There is a good basic article on the subject over on OH: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/revision/gastric-bypass-revision-surgery.html While it seems that the more common revision is to the duodenal switch, the article says that revising to the VSG can also be done. The DS generally has better regain resistance than the RNY or VSG, so that seems to be the more common revision, but this can be an even more individual issue than choosing the original WLS. The article goes into some of the considerations in revising including analyzing why the original surgery failed and determining the appropriate response - behavior mod, reworking the original procedure or revising to another. Another good article is this one: http://www.dssurgery.com/about/publications/duodenal-switch-safe-operation.pdf Revising an RNY is a complicated procedure that relatively few surgeons are qualified to do (or that one would trust to do,) so travelling is often involved. Is your sister near you in NJ? Dr. Roslin in NY is one, Rabkin and Keshisian in Calif are also well qualified. Posting to the revision board and DS board on ObesityHelp will get you some more help on this issue (even if the desired or appropriate revision is to a VSG, the folks on the DS board there tend to be very protective of their procedure and picky about surgeons' qualifications, so they can steer you to the best revision surgeons who can help guide your sister to the best answer for her.
  17. Hi all. I was banded Aug. 3, 2010. I weighed 285 lbs. I had an "uncontrolled pop" at the port site about 10 days post op. It was drained and I was on antibiotics. I now weigh 250 lbs. I went in for my first adjustment on Sept. 15 and found out my port had flipped. I had surgery for port revision yesterday. I will hopefully have my first fill in 2 weeks. Wishing success to all of us.

Any aussie rny people out there..

Hi all I'm from Perth.. Nice to see some fellow Aussies.. My doc said the same thing. If there is too much scar tissue he won't be able to do the revision on the day. I hoe it will be ok...I will be devastated if I have to wait.. My surgery was already cancelled once already.

Any binge eaters who had sleeve?

I am a binge eater, comfort eater, stress eater, emotional eater, you name it. For a while after surgery I was fine but gradually I started to eat more and more, and eat the wrong foods (junk, too many carbs) and since surgery 4 years ago I have regained 50lbs of the 100lbs I lost. I stretched my sleeve and became addicted to carbs and soda again and now I am having to restart my journey with a stretched sleeve. I will probably have to have a bypass revision next year. I don't tell you this to scare you, but I think it's a really really good idea to have counselling and try to fix your binge eating asap. The sleeve won't necessarily "cure" it. If you try, you can cheat and work around the sleeve. My advice is, stay right away from junk food, don't eat simple carbohydrates, don't drink soda even diet, esp when eating. And get professional help (which I am now doing). Good luck!! I am a RARE case of failure, so don't panic, just be sensible and follow your food plan ALWAYS.

    Newbie Here

I always wonder about the people writing about "brimming with energy" 3 weeks after WLS. Well, not this gal here... How much food the pouch can comfortably hold is depending on the patient (e. g. did they a pouch/sleeve-resizing or not, how much swelling is still around) and what you put into the pouch. I can eat way more than 0.5 cup. I'm 4 weeks out of revision from MGB to RNY. I'm always surprised how little other patients seem to be able to eat or drink. Totally normal. You're putting food weight into your system again. Revision weight loss is said to be much slower. You're also at a relatively low BMI of 32 - I wouldn't expect quicker weight loss.

    Why isnt it working?

Hi, and I am so sorry to hear your mom's story--. I think that she should look into a revision surgery. When my band failed, not only did my surgeon tell me he did not think I was a good candidate for another one, but quite frankly, I didnt want another one, to always be scared that the same thing would happen. Even if mine had been a slip, I would have taken it out, do do something else. I only need to loose a little over 100 lbs, but I still want something more permanant with less room for mechanical errors...good luck to her!
  24. There is a good reason to avoid the RNY revision if you can - the reactive hypoglycemia and marginal ulcer (and all of the medical care limitations that stem from it) issues, but it's not the end of the world, either if that's what you need. It's a common procedure that's been done in one form or another for 140 years, so its quirks and features are well known (but I would rather avoid its quirks if I can). I would certainly get a second, and even third, opinion on it, as while the sleeve is a fairly straightforward procedure most to do these days, repairing one that isn't working correctly is not necessarily so. Most bariatric surgeons started out with the bypass, so that is their comfort zone and they often prefer to go back to the familiar when things get a bit complicated, while there are some who have gone deeper into the sleeve and specialized in it and related procedures, such as the DS, and they are more comfortable doing things that others wouldn't do. We sometimes hear on these forums that "you can't do a Nissen (fundoplication) on a sleeve as there isn't any fundus left (well, not much) yet there are some who routinely perform them. Between that and meshing, there are options, and an RNY doesn't necessarily fix the potential recurring problem, as it, too, yield a small stomach pouch that is subject to herniating. If possible, for a second opinion, I would seek out a surgeon who does the DS (duodenal switch) as that is a good proxy for one who is well experienced with dealing with sleeves, and is more comfortable with more complex procedures as well. If they recommend an RNY revision, too, then that's a pretty solid confirmation of what's appropriate for your specific case.
