    Flipped Port

Port revision surgery is a breeze. Mine flipped a couple of months ago and I had to have revision surgery. I was in and out in under 30 minutes and got a fill during that time as well. I went home within an hour after the surgery, felt great and went back to work the next day. The recovery is minimal and there is very little pain involved. I didn't even take tylenol. As for why they flip, no one knows. It just happens sometimes, thats all.

    Failed Lapband Patient

One of the stressed points made to me about LapBand was it was only a tool and you have to make changes to make it work like stated above. I also know that of the bypass surgery, which you can gain back weight. there was a person at my orientation that had the bypass and was there for the band. So it can go both ways. My surgeon said he would hesitate approving this for the person may not have made the committment to change her pschological aspects and that may not be ready. I think this is smart. I think the doctor on this utube thing is just trying to make money! Trying to sell his patients. How many of his bypass patients will come back saying they can't lose weight either ? I am not attacking the woman he chose, just the doctor for using them for his own agenda!
  3. I find that people in general are just uninformed and way too opinionated. I have an acquiantance who works in a hospital. She's seen maybe 2 bad bypass scenarios and keeps telling me how fortunate I am that I didn't end up like them. I'm like, "you have no idea what you're talking about." She's obese and chooses to stay that way; that's fine, can't change anyone or make them want to do something good for their health, that's totally on them. But then when they complain that their husband doesn't want to have sex with them and they don't know why or what to do, I'm like....."Well, you could take off some of those fenders and feel better about yourself," but you can't say that, can you?! She complains that she has "back boobs" and how ugly that is....yep, that's true, but to actually take the action to fix these self-esteem issues, oh HELL NO, not going to do that, way too scary. You see where this goes, right? Some people would rather just be fat and use food as a crutch than to have a real life, be healthy, and unobsessed with food, but then they'd have to deal with the underlying issues of their personality dysfunction. Yep, it's one big old rolled up ball of wax, all that emotional junk that gets trapped in us. At some point you have to start to unwind all that crap and get down to what's really going on. The eating and weight is just a symptom of the underlying trapped junk. You got to fix it eventually, either from the outside in or the inside out. I say congrats to all of us who've taken the initiative to resolve our addictions and create a better life for ourselves and our families. Yay!!

    Need some feedback

Hi everyone, I've been a frequent lurker, but I have not interacted on the boards. I now find myself in a position that I'm unsure about and could use some feedback. I was banded in 2008. I haven't had any problems until semi recently. Two weeks ago all of the fluid was taken out of my band because I started having bad heartburn while I was sick with a summer cold. Oddly enough, this was just a little over a week after seeing my Lap Band doc and being advised to consider revision to either sleeve or gastric bypass due to not really seeing much in results. My surgery weight was 258. My lowest weight was 221. Current weight is 247. Anyway, since having all of the fluid removed, my body is all kinds of messed up. I can actually eat LESS than I could with the band. I eat, I get heartburn. I get too hungry, I get heartburn. I eat solid foods too close to bedtime, I get heartburn. I'm also experiencing lots of gas and some bloating almost every time I eat something, Yesterday, it happened with water. Now, I'm on Prilosec per my doctor. I have an EGD scheduled for Thursday of next week as well as a barium swallow the day after. They've already done an x-ray and they say that my band is in the correct position. So, I'll have some answers soon, but I want to know if anyone has any kind of experiences that might give some clue as to what's happening. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Ahhh shucks, thanks everyone. Yes I had the revision surgery on May 5th to repair the wound seperation scar. this time all healed wonderfully!!! I sure was mosre scared the 2nd time around because of the first times issues.
  7. Hello today is the big day . I am getting a revision from the lap band to the sleeve , I go in at 9:30 am . I had the band put in twice the first time I contracted h pilorie or what ever it was which caused a lot of vomiting and acid . Which Inturn caused the band to bend the stomach. So they took it out but before they did I lost a 100 pounds I was 430 when I had the band drop to 330 . Then they put it in again but just maintained it . But then I started having problems , they now are saying it is bending the stomach and some of the fluid is missing .so now today I will get the sleeve I gained 20 pounds unfortunately .so I am up to 350 ..looking forward for the new lifestyle and hopefully no more constant hunger pains that never seem to get satisfied .

    November Sleevers

@fab...me too! I've never been more ready in my life for anything like I am about this. I know about 3 people at work who have recently had either the sleeve or bypass and they all say the same thing. It's the best thing that has ever happened to them.
  9. I went to my first dietary consultation and was asked what kind of surgery I was interested in. I said adjustable band and was told not to get that because 30 to 50% of them had to come out, and that there was no hunger loss either; they hadn't done one in 3 years. That's not what the introductory class literature said; they had nothing but praise for it. I took the class 10 years ago and banding had been around for 8 years and they were pushing it as the next new thing. Now its the gastric sleeve. I was told that nutrient absorption was very high, better than gastric bypass and everyone was getting it, plus you would have no sensation of hunger. I would now need 60 grams of Protein and it pretty much has to be animal protein. Strange thing is I still feel like I am getting the pitch here. I saw the suggested diet and it was pretty severe. like one boiled egg and a half a English muffin for Breakfast. Anybody here been through this. How honest is the presentation I was given do you think? Man I am eating like a horse and still losing weight atm. Only been a few days since my first appointment so I have time to start this. I do wonder about the veracity of what I have been told though.
  10. I work in the health industry, and this article came across my desk today... it's an opportunity for you, the patient, speak up regarding their proposal to NOT cover surgery for patients whose BMI's are under 35 who are dealing with diabetes. Their argument is that it won't make a dramatic difference in a person's health. CMS Proposes Covering Bariatric Surgery to Treat Diabetes Written by Stephanie Wasek Monday, 17 November 2008 After an extensive evidence review, CMS has announced a proposal to revise its existing coverage policy for bariatric surgery to include type 2 diabetes as one of the co-morbidities CMS would consider in determining whether bariatric surgery would be covered for a Medicare beneficiary who is morbidly obese (an individual with a BMI of at least 35 is considered morbidly obese). CMS is also proposing to not cover bariatric surgery when it is used to treat type 2 diabetes in a beneficiary with a BMI below 35. In 2006, CMS expanded coverage of bariatric surgery for Medicare beneficiaries who receive one of four procedures — gastric bypass, open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, and open and laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch — in bariatric centers of excellence, as certified by the American College of Surgeons or the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, and as reported on the Medicare coverage Web site. To be considered for coverage, Medicare beneficiaries must have a BMI of 35 or higher and must have exhibited a serious health condition in addition to morbid obesity, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, or osteoarthritis. Type 2 Diabetes would join the list of serious health conditions. However, after "a careful review of the medical evidence available on bariatric surgery," CMS is also proposing to not cover bariatric surgery for patients who do not meet the definition of morbid obesity, even if they do have type 2 diabetes. "While recent medical reports claimed that bariatric surgery may be helpful for these patients, CMS did not find convincing medical evidence that bariatric surgery improved health outcomes for non-morbidly obese individuals," says the agency. CMS is seeking comments from the public about this evidence and its implications for coverage, and about which groups of patients should be covered for this surgery. Public comments may be submitted directly to CMS's Coverage Web site for 30 days from the Nov. 17 posting of the proposed decision memorandum. CMS will issue a final decision memorandum within 90 days of the proposed decision. Read the proposed decision memorandum and submit comments at the CMS Coverage Web site.

    What did you eat today?

I think every surgery and every surgeon is different and has different guidelines on what to do before and after the surgery. So best to stick with what the doc says. After my gastric bypass, I was on a 10 day liquid diet (only liquids, including Protein shakes), then the second 10 days were all mushy foods, pureed foods which would include mashed potatoes, unsweetened apple sauce, eggs, hot cereals, blended Soups, Protein shakes, tuna, puddings etc etc..and then after that, it would be soft foods firm tofu, seafood, thin sliced deli meeds, toast, crackers, Beans, peas and well cooked Pasta but must meet 75grams of Proteins. Then 2 months down the road I would be able to more of soft foods. But its also been said that you can introduce foods to your stomach and see how you feel. But to be honest, just meeting the goals of protein is tough and you can only eat small amounts of food so best to get all the good stuff in vs. bad foods like sweets and carbs. Today, first thing I had for food was a thin sliced deli meat with Dijion mustard, then had a bite of my mom's cabbage dish, had a tablespoon of Peanut Butter, later in the day had 1/2 an apple with another tablespoon of peanut butter, then for dinner, we had some hard shell tacos and the meat we used was turkey. I had one hard shell taco with turkey and cheese which took me a while to eat. And then for snacking after dinner, I had some almonds and I am full. Am drinking lots of Water through out the day and before I sleep...

    Straws?

I was going to say that you will get a myriad of responses on this. To be honest, I have used one quite often (7 1/2 months post-op). I did ask my NUT this question just yesterday and her response is that straws (as well as carbonation) should be avoided long term as the air it can introduce in to your pouch can eventually stretch the pouch. Now I had bypass not sleeve and the rules are often different. Additionally there are a lot of folks that say the pouch cannot be stretched. So, in summary, there isn't a clear answer. You can always avoid it to err on the safe side but don't panic if you have or need to use one.

    May 2nd Surgery

That's good news for your husband! I am sorry that you are going through all this. Would you be denied from your surgeon or insurance? I thought it was pretty common these days to have the revision. I started at 40 bmi (back in August) and was so nervous I was going to drop below and get denied - that I unintentionally gained more weight over the course of 9 months. My process was a bit longer than most, because I was on anti-depressants, but not seeing a therapist. They wanted me to do 12 weeks of therapy. When that was completed, I was weighed in and was told I needed to lose 15lbs to before I was even allowed to meet with my surgeon. It never dawned on me that sleep apnea (I had just been diagnosed) would be considered a co-morbidity, until my nurse confirmed it. Extra anxiety over nothing. You should contact your insurance/surgeon and ask, just in case. Keep me posted on how you both are doing!
  16. Ha! One boiled egg and half an English muffin? The first 5 or 6 months, you can barely eat just the egg! Sleeve surgery is a RESTRICTIVE surgery alone (although you do get a little extra help with hunger from the ghrelin that is cut away) Bypass uses a combination of restriction and malabsorbtion. Although the bypass is the "gold standard" of weight loss surgeries, the Sleeve is becoming more popular because of the sheer safety of it and lack of side effects. As a rule, weight loss is slower at first with the sleeve as opposed to the bypass, but long term losses seem comparable. Both cause restriction where little food can be consumed in one sitting. With the bypass, Vitamins will need to be taken seriously for the rest of your life. Any surgery is just a tool. You'll still struggle with head hunger, and food choices should still be smart and nutritious. Forever. So choose the tool you feel will serve you the best for the long haul. Do your research to weigh the pros and cons of each. Good luck!

Yes I feel so much better and am so much happier!!!:tongue_smilie: You Bandpal look amazing too!!!! Yes for the most part the tummy tis gone!~ For the first time ever I don't have a tummy that sticks out farther then my boobies!!! Thanks Sades!!! I now have something to smile about!!! Scarecrow you look great!! a whole new man!! And I agreee with you Scarecrow, everyone that's losing weight needs to look at before and after pix , becasue that's the one way we opurselves can truly see the weight loss, at least for me. Sure I know I lost weight, But there are times when I still see myself fat, So then I look at side by side pix and THEN I can see the difference and not be so hard on myself and nit pick at what I Still need to lose. Shortgal, Thanks. am feeling 110% better for the most part, I still have days when I am tired and have to take it easy. I am still having some woun d issues where it's not healing and still have to pack it 2 times a day with gauze. (oh how fun that is) For some reason it is not getting better BUT its not getting worse, it's just at a standstill. So he has me on some new meds, and I have have have to get my 125+ MG of Protein in. Some days that's hard . But I am trying. I am trying to stay positive abut all this, I know I have to have a revision when I finally heal becasue of the scar tissue, so that scares me. But we will cross that bridge when we come to it. I get to go back to the gym so that makes me happy, Laying in bed for 5 weeks wasn't good for upper arms and thighs. Tonight is my husbands Christmas party, Noone at his work has seen me since the surgery, So it will be my unveiling!!! WOHOOOOO  Keep up the great job everyone!!! Happy Holidays to each and everyone of you and your families!!!

Question foe those who were prego after bypass.... does anyone feel full even when Ur not and u know u should eat
  19. RNY was recommended by my surgeon but he said I could choose either. I choose RNY because I wanted a one and done. I didn't have issues with GERD but I didn't want to chance having problems with reflux after the sleeve and having to have a revision to RNY. Very happy with my decision. Not worried about skin and such. I did this for my health as I was facing 2 knee replacements. Now I think I can survive without them - still can't jump but I can walk without pain and that's all I care about.
  20. to answer your first question - yes, we do. when people pop off at the mouth spreading false information to prospective patients for no reason, it's definitely something to get worked up over. a skilled surgeon can reverse an RNY. a back-alley Mexican chop-shop probably can't. but again, the RNY is such a superior procedure it is virtually never even ASKED FOR, much less done. compare that to the constant flood of sleeve patients who have to have revision surgery to.... you guessed it.... RNY. second question - yes, ghrelin reduces with bypass. one study showed it reduced MORE than the sleeve.
  21. Today is one year from my bypass surgery. So much has changed in this one year. Both my life and I are unrecognisable. Now I am going to attempt to post the obligatory before and after shots. (please disregard my messy closet in the "after" picture!)

    feeling hopeless

This year is my 10 year anniversary from when I had my RNY. I originally lost 155 lbs and had not felt better in my life! I was addicted to running and working out...which isnt a bad addiction! 18 months after my RNY, I had my Gallbladder removed. 5 years into my weight loss I slipped my SI joint and there began a serious of complications with my lower back! I started a serious of steriod injections in 2009, and began to gain weight. Not too much weight, becuase I was still working out despite doctors orders. Then in 2012, I lost feeling in my left leg and had to have emergency back surgery. I ended up with drop foot and a discectomy in my L4, L5 and S1 joints. After that I felt pretty ok, except i had to learn how to walk normally again. A few months after my back surgery, I ended up in the ER with pain in my stomach and violently throwing up. Again, I had emergency surgery....a obstruction in my intestions. When they went in there, they found my intestines were twisted. I woke up 5 hours after surgery to find out that they couldnt do the surgery laprosopically, and they cut me right open and it was more serious than they thought. So after recovering from that, and all the steriods I have been on over the past few years, I had now gained 50-60 lbs back. Last summer I had to return to a pain specialist for my back, and they discovered they my back pain is now coming from the scar tissue from my back surgery. So here we go again....more steriod injections. Over the past few months, I have learned that I have developed sleep apnea, and now high blood pressure! These 2 things I have NEVER had before in my life! As of today, I have gained 90 lbs of my weight back! Im so overwhelmed. I still cant work out like i used to, because of my drop foot, and I am limited in my activities. I have started drinking diet sodas again...although i still drink my required Water throughout the day. But I just cant seem to break this cycle, and stop the downward spiral! I feel so hopeless, my spirit is broken, I feel lost and afraid! This is affecting my health, my marriage and my quality of life! I see my gastric bypass doctor for my monthly B12 shots, and all they tell me is, keep track of your eating and cut back. YES YES...I KNOW!!!! Easier said than done....especially when you are not depressed! Ive tried the 5 day pouch test, and my doctor has done a upper GI to see if my pouch has stretched and it hasnt. I would love feedback! I just dont know what to do anymore!

    Can't decide...

I am going to have the sleeve. My mom and sister both had the bypass. My mom 18 years ago and did great. She does have the carb dumbing/diarrhea. She also has a ton of gas and burping. Also she takes a ton of Vitamins through out the day. I personally think she has some issues with bone density as she has fallen and broken her wrist several times now. She also doesn't exercise or lift weights. That being said, I am going to have the sleeve because I didn't the deficiency aspect of bypass. I also didn't want to deal with bathroom issues the rest of my life. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
