    Band to bypass approved today

You are going to love the bypass! I was revised from band to rny may 2014. I am below my goal weight which is a normal bmi. I wear a size 6 and honestly I am so much healthier than I was with the band. The band worked for me but I could never lose the last 20 pounds and I had a lot of sliming and throwing up. I have had no sliming and haven't thrown up at all! It's so much easier than the band. Wish I had done it first lol good luck!
  2. Hello. I am considering revising my sleeve to Sadi and I’m curious to know how you guys are doing now.
  3. Sometimes you feel like your the only one that “didn’t do it right” because you see all these success stories online but there are many of us in this boat otherwise revisions wouldn’t be needed. My doctor told me not to expect too much but I’m going to work hard on this. Im determined. We got this
  4. I haven't had much trouble with pain, still a little tender but that's about it. I only have one problem right now, which unfortunately is a major one, I can't keep fluids down. I'm just hoping I don't need anything more than an edg with dilation. A revision surgery would be a nightmare. I'm just relying on prayers and steroids to get me through Tuesday when I see the dr. I do have occasional gas pains but no big deal. I'd give anything to keep fluids down.
  5. Blood clots and infections are a complication of any surgery, but I can tell you that once I recovered after my revision, I have had zero issues. I am almost a year out, and have zero food restrictions, no med restrictions, and the only "problem" I've had is trying to maintain. I've pretty much got a handle on that for a few weeks now, and it's just a balancing act. It is tough to find some negatives, but the ones I've read about more often are the mental struggles with eating small portions, and wanting to eat junk. For some, the food issues aren't resolved with the sleeve. I had head hunger pretty much beat with the band. I have never experienced hunger post-op and even to this day, I don't get real hunger. It's a great tool, and I have zero issues with vitamin/nutrient deficiency. Oh, the only other problem I've had is in February, I was diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension. It's low blood pressure when I stand up too quickly from a sitting or laying position. It's been resolved with increasing my Fluid and sodium intake. My surgeon and PCP agree that it is related to my drastic weight loss and it will take some time for my body to adjust to my current weight. I hardly ever have an episode now since following doctor's orders with my fluids/sodium intake. Overall, I haven't had any serious issues post sleeve.
  6. My major problems have been mental. I had never suffered from depression in my life, but at around 6 months out I was having a lot of emotional difficulties and went on an anti-depressant around 7/8 months out. I'm assuming the sleeve, rapid weight loss, played some role, but I also had many other things going on in my life at the time too (death of my grandmother, infertility issues creeping back in, etc.), so who's to say. Medically, I have low blood pressure issues, which I've always had, I'm just about 4-6 points lower now, and Vitamin D deficient, which I was pre-op as well. Good luck with your revision! I am so happy and grateful I had this procedure.
  7. Who'sThere

    Insurance question

This is a revision. I've already done all that the first time. My surgeon only wants me to do a brush up nutrition class, support group meeting, EGD and barium swallow. I agree that this is important for WLS virgins, if you will, and so does my surgeon. He requires all this whether you have insurance or not for a first procedure. He knows I am adequately prepared for the revisions. Well, at least as much as one can be for such a serious life changing surgery. Oh, and if I DO have to do the 6 month diet, I will NOT qualify if I lose 10% or more of my body weight. I have to show an INABILITY to lose that much by conventional means. Plus, I have to have been a bmi or 40 or more for 5 years and I haven't been. (I dont have three comorbidities yet.) My band was great until I had it unfilled with my pregnancy and then i a double hit with a Hasimotos flare up. I will have to wait 2 more years. 8. Who'sThere

    Insurance question

The bariatric pre-certification nurse said if they "remove the lapband and convert to RNY in one fell swoop" it is considered a revision and I do not have to meet the initial criteria. If i have two separate procedures, though, I DO have to meet the initial requirements again whether the band is out 2 days or 2 years. Now, I see why your insurance required the 6 months. 9. My port flipped about 6mnths after my intial surgery n Jan 2010. My surgeon would flip it manually. My surgeon left, and I got a new surgeon who did port revision surgery--he flipped up and moved it to a more accessible area. I was unfilled for the surgery. Like another OP said, my weight loss slowed down some. Hope everything works out okay for you.
  10. band to revision in 3 wks, scared about complications after reading posts, dont have any dieting, surgeon said to maintain 35 BMI. my family and friends are trying to talk me out of it telling me i only have 50 to 60 pounds and should me able to do it on my own, feel shame that i can't, excited but scared too, afraid i wont be able to drink 96 oz daily.
  11. I went into my initial consult not really knowing much about either procedure. After the nurse gave her presentation, I knew that I wanted the RNY. I had mild GERD, and was concerned it would get worse with the sleeve. After I joined this board, I read a lot of stories about members having a revision from sleeve to RNY b/c of GERD which reinforced my choice. So far, so good!! I'm very happy with my surgery!

    US vs. Mexico?

Hi.... Find out how long the process is through your insurance. If it's too long of a wait/process then check out "Beliteweight." I went through them to finance my surgeries. First I had lap band by Dr. Rodriguez in TIJUANA, Mexico in 2013 and now I am having revision surgery to the sleeve. Dr. R is the best!! I can let you know how my sleeve surgery goes if you want. It is scheduled 3/24.
  13. I don't know why you would consult an attorney or another surgeion unless you think malpractice was done. I think your surgeon did the correct course to fix your henia, then wait to do your revision...... I'm sure you signed your life away before the surgery as well.......
  14. Thankful that you'll be okay! I'm glad there was no need to revise to another surgery. Speedy healing, and I hope you won't have an issue again in the future, ~Cheri

    Worried about getting surgery

You are over thinking it as we all did, I had gerd before surgery I was on 40mg nexium as well as gaviscon liquid and tablets just to keep on top of it. I now take 20mg nexium and that's it and I am not sure I even need that but haven't been game to come off it yet. My surgeon said weightloss would help my gerd which it did. I have noticed the people who get gerd and revise to bypass also had a substantial weight gain as well. I have had zero issues with keeping food and drink down, had a few little omg I shouldn't have eaten/ drunk that so quick but after a few minutes it's all good and you don't do it again lol but honestly I a a week away from 12 months and I have zero problems. At the moment I am recovering from covid and I am suffering from lack of desire to eat or drink and have a bit of nausea but that's from covid not surgery.

    1 year post op!

Thank you for showing your amazing progress. I am in the process of getting a revision and this photo is making me feel excited. Also you look Amazing!
  17. I have the same issue over 2 years after my revision to RNY. The GERD has never left and i am still on the strongest PPI twice a day and I still Burn at times ! Please let me know if you are able to get help. The Dexilant is over $2500 every 3 months !!! My saving grace is that my insurance covers it!
  18. When you have an unusual situation such as you have, I have found it useful to get second and even third opinions. A general or general GI surgeon may not have that much experience with bariatric patients, and a strict bariatric surgeon may not have run into this type of problem before (though is more likely to be familiar with such complications. Is this a problem with something that's odd about you, or was there something odd about the way the bypass revision was done - good to get a fresh set of bariatric eyes on that to check. Is it a hiatal hernia - some bariatric surgeons have a hard time dealing with them, (and some don't...) and likewise some general surgeons may have a hard time dealing with that in a bariatric patient. A regional cancer center with a GI department can be a good place to consult, as they tend to have experience with a broader set of unusual cases, and they also usually have an associated bariatric department. I ran into an odd cancer situation a few years ago (thankfully fairly minor and early), such that even a major center might see one or two per year, and was a subject of one of the department's monthly meeting where the doctors all get together and discuss their "interesting" patients and brainstorm different approaches to the problem. You may need that level of "interest" to solve your problem hopefully not,) but it's good to be able to tap into that level of resource if it's needed. Good luck in finding a solution...
  19. I went in for RNY as my surgeon promised on 7/2. Surgron said adhesions & scar tissue too much to risk (even though he claimed he cleared this up on May 7 when he removed the band). He did not perform the surgery, so I'm stuck recovering from a non-surgery surgery,. The band and all the revision surgeries for the band has stolen any ability for me to ever have bariatric surgery. Just waiting for the inevitable now. People don't realize how much damage the band does internally to you until its too late. My advice would be to go straight to RNY if you need to lose more that 100lbs. The bariatric system is all about $, not about us. You won't know for years that the damage is. It's over for me. I wish all the rest of you the best of luck & be proactive when when you know things aren't quite right. Surgeons aren't Gods...sometimes they just put ego above everything else--but it's your gut that will tell you when something is terribly wrong.
  20. I don't have dumping syndrome. I had one episode of reactive hypoglycemia, which is considered late dumping, and I had that before revising to bypass. I've also thrown up once but I didn't have the sweats or shaking, so I think it was more related to eating too much. I think the current way they do the surgery actually minimizes dumping, so don't count on it. But the good news is that it still makes it difficult to eat too much of the bad stuff and doesn't allow full absorption. So you still need to make good choices, but it's very possible to still enjoy bits of indulgences.

    Final Choice

I was open for either but my surgeon chose sleeve for me. The reasoning was that if I didn't lose enough or had issues, I would still have the option for a revision to lose more if I needed whereas bypass is a one shot deal. Also I'm an athlete and the malabsorption issues might have caused a problem with a high activity level. I think sleeve was the right choice for me and while my loss has been slower than some I've been able to maintain muscle mass which I don't think I could have done with the bypass.

    May 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hi everyone, I’m new to this forum and planning to have revision from lap band to sleeve. Lap band experience was not good a waist of insurance money. Is a month wait for approval the usual weight time?

    2 Days post-op and hopeful

I was revised from gastric sleeve to bypass on 8/31. I had the same thoughts on food but know from the last surgery that would happen. The only pain I have is my lower belly feels like cramping and pulling. I have fits of energy then need a nap. I knew that would happen too. Hang in there! Once you start seeing the scale moving you will realize you did this for the greater good! Good luck and keep us posted on your progress !

    Self Conscious....

Hey All, My name is Rebecca and I am almost 29 and married from NJ. I have about 70-80 lbs to lose....I had my band for a year and just got it removed two days ago. I am doing a 3 month medically supervised diet then revising to the sleeve in September. I know I have to kick up my exercise regime once my surgery incisions heal up. I am a big fan of yoga but have found it to be hard since I have gained weight (At one point I was down to a size 8/10 but gained the weight back to a size 20). I have a gym membership but find it hard to motivate myself to go because I am very self conscious of the way I look. I need to get myself to go and walk on the treadmill or go to one of their classes and not care if people look at me. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get over the gym jitters? Thanks!
