Can't Stop Eating Too Fast!

I had to teach myself by literally only giving myself exactly what I'm supposed to eat for each bite. I'd set a timer and when it went off, I would get myself another bite worth of food. Or my hubby would do it. It's drastic, but I ate too fast and too much at first and REALLY paid for it. I had to do this for about 2 weeks until I got used to it. Once I did, I was able to put my full meal's worth of food on the plate or in the bowl. I also used toddler utensils so I couldn't over-eat. -

Winter approaching and I am cleaning out my closet. Realizing I have no winter clothing that fit me properly. I also clean out a whole box of clothing that no longer fits. I tried to look more throughly to see if I can find anything, but looks like the whole closet does not fit me anymore… over 10 years worth of clothing gone. Well, time for some retail therapy. lol I will have to try to refraining myself from getting too much new clothes. So far I bought myself 3 sweaters from Quince and 2 pair of jeans from Gap about a month ago, they are fitting loose already. -
You are very early in your recovery and your inside, stomach stitches are not fully healed. You dont want to push food that might do some damage. Do you know that you can't drink with food ? because that would push your meal straight out of your stomach. It is said that the hungry signals are false and could be too much stomach acid working on no food causing the rumblings. Some say its dehydration. It is always best to follow your surgeons regime at this time because it seems to be different from anyone elses. FYI, I was still on liquids at three weeks. It is a massive change in our eating habits and it take a while to get your head around. At about 6-8 weeks when your stomach has healed, your true restriction will kick in and you will be surprised how little you can eat. Just try to hang in there until you get the go ahead to eat meats etc again. They will stay longer in your stomach and you will feel full for longer

Low Vitamin A after surgery

My pre-surgery Vitamin A was 43. It had dropped to 27 at 4.5 months and was up to 34 at 7 months, but "normal" is 38 or above, so the doctor is having me take 10,000 IU of Vitamin A daily for two weeks (which is the same as 3,000 mcg) just to bolster my levels. I will retest before my 1 year surgery follow up. You can get Vitamin A supplements over the counter, no prescription needed. -

Thanks for your comments everyone! My boyfriend actually bought me everything I tried on 🤣 Apart from 1 skirt which didn't actually look nice on, so I was happy to put that back aha. I have been paid today so I am having to resist the temptation to buy more clothes...BUT, 3 coats, a skirt and a top is not a full wardrobe to sustain me...so I guess I will have to go shopping 🤷♀️😂 -

I think it depends on what you put into it like anything else. If you really use the opportunity to change WHAT you eat and not just how much you eat and take the energy burst and add some more activity to your routine. Real lifestyle changes, you should lose and have a far better chance to keep it off long term. But if you just make small changes like eat half a kids meal at McDonald’s instead of a super sized meal then yes you will probably lose but not as much and you most likely won’t keep it off long because as you probably know when the hunger comes back your portions tend to increase so that happy meal won’t do it for you anymore and you wont have any healthy foods you learned to enjoy. The exercise is a big component for me that I didn't do the first time And I question daily why i didn't start it sooner because i truly do feel fantastic after I exercise. Nutrition wise I searched for healthy recipes and tried so so many. There were several that weren’t for me but just as many that were. I made a new one everyday in the beginning and I froze individual portions of the things I liked. Now I only cook a couple times a week and I double The recipes to keep my freezer stocked. This makes healthy options far more convenient so it’s so much easier to make the right choice. I saved links to recipes I wanted to try on my notes app and under another note I saved favorites. If you are craving something specific just type the word healthy in front of it and so many recipes will pop up to give you ideas of how to make a healthier version. Now don’t get me wrong I’d love to have a pizza BUT, I have found several recipes that are totally healthy and I legit enjoy as well. And don’t rule out stuff you don’t love now tastes can change a bit and things you didn’t like before may tasted different. Also, once you detox from the processed crap things taste different. Fruit is sweeter for one thing. I have been trying a new fruit and veggie each week. And I try cooking it different ways to find as much variety as I can. -

OMG! How did I miss you had Vegemite on toast last week @Starwarsandcupcakes. I didn’t think any non Australian could tolerate it. Mind you I can’t stand it - so strong - unless there’s heaps of butter & only a smear of Vegemite. I’m a promite girl (or was before surgery when I had it regularly on freshly baked white bread). That carrot soup looks delicious! -

other things ive eaten this weekend (yeah kinda sad looking, i know 😞) 1) mini butter chicken meat pie & a minced pork and chive bao bun...400 cals for it all, ate ½ the bao and one bite of pie (wasn't very good) 2) ½ a slice of my homemade black truffle bread, 1tbsp strawberry jam, 1 tbsp almond butter: 220 cals, ate it all 3) truffle bread again with 1 tsp butter, 1 tsp olive oil & 1 tbsp balsamic glaze: 120 cals, ate it all. 4) cabbage soup with leftover grilled chicken: 150 cals, ate it all 5) a chocolate-peanut-butter-banana funnel cake monstrosity with a side scoop of vanilla ice cream. i had one single bite of this (sans ice cream), swearsies. i honestly just like ordering food more than i like to eat it. it was split among my dinner companions but most was left on the plate (they had their own desserts to contend with!!) -

It's not that we're trying to pick on you or force you to justify yourself. But honestly, what you're saying doesn't make sense. How is it your insurance covered your surgery and a panni but won't cover you for organ failure? How are you not in the hospital now? If your organs are shutting down, no way would they have just sent you home. I work in healthcare, and we've sent people to the hospital for way less than that. I would suggest eating carb and calorie dense slider foods. Mashed potatoes are great for that. Add sour cream and butter. There's a lot of stuff you can have that will add weight. I've been struggling to get my weight up, but adding protein shakes, avocado on nearly everything I can, slider foods, etc... And eat every 2-3 hours during the day and the evening before you go to bed. You shouldn't have to get up through the night to eat. -

@SpartanMaker is pretty much on point as usual. 😁 If you decide to go down the weight loss surgery path, I’d still probably look at doing the gall as soon as possible. I had mine removed 2 years after my sleeve. My surgeon (who did my sleeve too) said once you start experiencing gall pain it will only get worse & you ‘ll experience it more and more often. I had one stack & it was horrendous - was rolling on the bed writhing in pain fir about 40 minutes until it passed & I have a pretty high pain threshold. My surgeon removed my gall about 2 weeks later. The alleve may have worked but it was more likely to have been the just wave of the pain passing. The cider vinegar wouldn’t have done anything - just a co incidence. A dose of cider vinegar isn’t going to dissolve the stones to stop the pain or get rid of them (like some old wives tales advise and influencers selling cider vinegar promote). Checkout the you tube channels of Dr John Pilcher and Dr Matthew Weiner (under pound of cure as is website). They are excellent resources for anyone considering weight loss surgery or who’ve had surgery. They have a lot of videos so you may have to scroll through a lot. Dr Weiner also has podcasts. -

I am a baby in my journey 10months today actually, but I reached my goal weight at 6months and I creeped down a touch more for about another month. I have maintained +/- 3lbs for the past 3ish months. I track every single day (eating 1700-2000cal a day), I prioritize protein (hit 150-200g a day) although lately its more like 225g of protein and that is WAY too much my stomach hurts lol so I am adjusting, keeping fat low (under 90) keeping carbs under 200g. I lift heavy (3 days lower and 2 days) along with cardio (running, incline walks, stair master), then 1 day where I do 40min HIIT work out then 30min of cardio. I have 1 rest day. I meal prep every week so all my meals M-F from pre-workout snack down to my last snack before dinner is prepped and tracked. I know what's for dinner every day as I make sure to plan for those. All the food I make is now lower in fat, higher in protein and the family doesn't even notice! Weekends I "indulge" I still track but notice I do not eat as much those days. I eat protein ice cream using my Ninja Creami or sneak in a few bites of my hubby's Ben and Jerrys. I do eat chips, fries, lettuce wrapped burgers, fried chicken **gasp!!** very small amounts but I do not deprive myself. This is a LIFESTYLE change not a diet. So I wanna go buck wild and get back to where I was but I also don't want to be a bird and never enjoy all the yummy treats. MODERATION IS KEY!! Eat healthy 85-90% and stay active, you won't have any issues! -

Hi, I’m 5’2” but was 5’4 1/2” and shrinking. My surgery date is October 21st. Will start pre-op diet after speaking with nutritionist again on10/01. I was reading the info on pre op and during and after surgery about nutrition. Did you all drink 5 shakes per day every 3 hours?? I don’t like them that much! BJ’s has a variety of flavors though.

Ah 2 weeks ago I did an inbody test and today I did it again to just see if I am going in the right direction. Well, I've lost "weight" but I think i only lost water and muscles I'm down 1 kg muslce and actually gained 300g fat! Ahhhhhh why does everything have to be complicated? The coach in the gym told ne to up my protien and take PT classes to focus on building strength and muscles but is she right or is she just trying to sell her services? I'll sit n discuss with my team on the 15th and decide what to do. On another note, I tried the power stretch class today and I stretched muscles didn't know existed hahaha it was amazing but tiring like I burnt almost 400 cals. P.s. attaching my 2 weeks and today inbody results -

I put mine as the weight on the day I went to my first surgical consult, which was also my highest recorded weight. With the diet and lifestyle changes I made as part of the program, I lost about 13 lbs in the 6 months between then and the start of my pre-op diet. I lost another 13 lbs in those 2 weeks of liquid diet before surgery. But I want credit for all the weight I lost! Interestingly, Dr. Weiner recently said on a podcast that the weight lost on a pre-op diet definitely is credited to the surgery in his opinion. The reasoning was that if you go on a liquid diet, lose 13 lbs, and then try to keep that weight off without having surgery just by eating right, you are going to regain most or all of it in a matter of weeks. The fact that we lose that weight and then keep losing more weight instead of gaining is thanks to the metabolic changes of the surgery. He also told me in a live Q&A support group a while back to use my weight from before the pre-op diet as my starting weight if I wanted to plug it into a prediction calculator. I raised the concern of being a bit behind the prediction based on one of those calculators and he asked me what my weight was before the liquid diet. When we used that number instead of my surgery day weight, it tracked much better (and is still looking very accurate at 9 months out). He said if I had always been 225 lbs (my day of surgery weight) that would be one thing, but in reality, my "true" weight was somewhere between 238 and 251 in terms of what my metabolism was trying to overcome with the surgery. I feel like that's one of those big questions a lot of us have in the beginning and nobody really gives an answer on the calculator sites. -

I’m 5 years out & I did not need to loose that much weight. I wish you the best of luck! My surgeon told me to go back to the basic, the diet of pre surgery. Liquids only. I know it is tough. Also look into the Fast metabolism diet that is how I got to my ultimate goal weight. It’s eating healthy foods in a certain order each week. You don’t need to buy any crazy pills to take every day, just eat a certain amount of foods. Even though we can’t eat the amount of foods the diet calls for, just following the food regimen was enough for me. I wish you the best of luck in your journey. -

My book for soft foods say 1/2 to 3/4 cups of food but to stop when you feel full. Which I’m guessing you guys are getting sick of my saying but they didn’t operate on my stomach so I don’t feel full on these small servings. I made an omelette though with 3 eggs, 1/2 cup veggies and 1/3 cup shredded reduced fat cheese and I put it in the measuring cup to see and half fit in the cup. That is actually a lot more food than I thought and I’m kinda scared to eat that much before I’m healed. -

Only you know the answer as you have to be ready, mentally, physically and emotionally, for the surgery and the changes you will have to make to be successful with the surgery in the long term. I was healthy, no comorbidities at all yet I knew at my weight and age (almost 54) the chance of them developing was very high. I also knew I could lose weight myself as I had many, many times before (though it’s much harder as a menopausal woman) but I also knew I could put it all back on again which I always did. The decision was easy. Woke up one morning and said enough. Made an appointment with my GP and 6 weeks later I had my surgery (no or very few hoops to jump through in Australia if you meet the criteria). Yes, the first couple of months aren’t easy: restricted diet, temporarily changed tastebuds and interesting discussions with yourself around food, eating, hunger, etc. (the head work we talk about begins). Pain was gone after 4 days though if you have surgical gas pain it can linger a week or so. You’ll discover and decide how & what you want to eat in the long term to maintain and that may be different from others. It’s all about what works for you & your lifestyle. Many people still eat ‘unhealthy’ food but it’s all about the portion they eat and how often they eat it. Everyone travels & then it often comes down to making the best choices you can and not beating yourself up if you do indulge while away. I just came back from a short girls trip and ate an obscene amount of cheese & drank more than I usually do. I’m okay about it and got back on my usual path when I got home. Like @NickelChip there are things I avoid. Bread, rice, pasta sits heavily in my tummy too. Foods can be super sweet so I generally avoid sweet things (I do indulge at odd times like at Christmas). I don’t find it hard to avoid or reduce my intake of those foods I struggle to eat or choose not to eat rarely. I don’t want to waste the opportunity I’ve been given. And yes, I’d do it again in a heart beat. All the best whatever you choose to do. -

Hii hope all is well with all of you, my surgery day is 10/29 highest weight 314 2 plus years ago starting weight 286 current weight 283 my weight has been up and down from 286 to 283 and it has stayed that way for the past 3 months, I guess good thing is I haven't gained any weight. good luck to all of us in our new journey -

Things are good- really want to go to the park and walk/jog but am just focusing on getting this cough under control. I was super excited that Farmer Boys (restaurant in California) had BOGO on salads. So I had them split it in 2 containers...so technically I scored 4 containers of salad with grilled chicken, avocado, 1/2 egg each, tomato, iceberg lettuce) So I will be enjoying them for the next 3 days- part of my good choice food for the day- and then my preOP protein shakes the other meals...pretty confident and I am one of those weird ones that likes salad and I also like water! -

I'm going to ask to have an ultrasound and see if they can see anything and if not, schedule another colonoscopy (just had one a year ago, not due for another 2 years). I'm going to look at what you mentioned (never heard of it) and see if I can get it here and if it helps. Also, if you've pooped 6x in the last 3 days, you could probably give your body a break for a day and if you don't go at all, take the medication again. After a hysterectomy, you want to make sure you go regularly and keep the poop soft and/or a bit runny for the first 2 weeks at least. Well, I had to be cut open, so maybe that was more for me. But I found it helped A LOT because the muscles really hurt. I imagine laparoscopic would be similar like with WLS since we needed to go easy with the pooping for a while after that, too. Definitely don't let yourself go too long without pooping, but if you're going more than twice per day, you might want to back off just a little to give your body a break and not get dehydrated. -
I have already had my Psychiatrist evaluation and the ok letter plus 3 others, I had to get. My first visit to my new psychiatrist was my one he used to okay me! We started at the beginning since he was new. We didn’t really cover a lot about the surgery but I did tell him about it in the beginning. I’ve been depressed, anxiety and grief since 2005. But no problem getting letter! Actually that’s when my weight gain started with behavioral meds.

Over 3 yrs from revision (gerd) and I can eat about a cup of food comfortably. I always think I can eat the whole steak though but that feeling goes away after a few bites lol. I think protein will always be like that for me. So it really depends on what I eat. Either way, it's really fun & liberating to be able to experiment and eat all these delicious foods and focus on quality instead of quantity.
