    Gastric Sleeve to SADI-S

The first thing you need to do is call your insurance company and determine your bariatric benefits and ask for them to be sent to you in writing. At the same time, ask for their policy paper on bariatric surgery. Most insurance companies have the requirements written in detail. Ask for them to be sent to you in writing as well. This policy paper should detail the requirements to be met for a revision. As far as the SADI-S, it is what my doctor recommended. Like you describe what “should” happen, my doctor listened to all of my issues, and explained all the procedures and recommended the SADI. Going in, I was thinking just a sleeve, but with my various metabolic issues the SADI made more sense. If you stay with your current doctor, demand that he review the pros and cons of each revision as it relates to your specific issues. You will also find a lot of information here in this forum from others who have gone through each procedure. Read, read, read! Good luck to you! Keep us posted on your progress.

    I've Been Sleeved!

I am 6 months out. I had only 3 instances of reflux and they were mild. I am on a ppi called Aciphex, once daily in the morning w/or w/out food as per directions. I've had no problem with reflux. From what I've read the Lapband can really cause reflux issues. I have a friend who had a gastric bypass and had issues with reflux as well. I'm thinking the VSG is the least likely to cause reflux in any chronic or significant way. Best wishes to you whatever you decide...stay healthy and be well.

    I've Been Sleeved!

LyndaRN - I'm getting ready for surgery end of the month - can you tell me why you decided on the sleeve vs. bypass? Thanks - and glad you are doing so fantastic - you are an inspiration to those of us getting ready to have the surgery

    Just Getting Started

23 pounds in 2 weeks? That's TERRIFIC! I get my motivation by seeing the results of weight loss, which is why, when I thought I'd have bypass, I thought I could do pretty good at keeping the weight off. I know I'm gonna dread the day when the weight loss starts to slow down, but hopefully, I will have lost so much that I'll be happy with how I look by then. I am really impressed. That's probably almost a couple of clothing sizes! Keep me posted. Meg

Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015

Have you tried marinating the chicken in something like fat free Italian dressing or cooking it in some chicken broth? With hamburgers I have to have mine medium instead of well done to be able to eat it. I like pork with fat free honey mustard dressing. We have a Nu Wave oven like you see on TV and it's well worth the money. You can cook your meat from frozen and it stays really juicy. My husband hates turkey but he will eat turkey cooked in the Nu Wave because it's not all dried out. My surgery was June 1st. I'm down 29 lbs since surgery. I haven't had any problems with any foods but I'm a band to sleeve revision and my sleeve is a little larger - he only took out 75%.

    Pain Pill Absorption/Chronic Pain

Hello Imagine 1....I take Lortabs for chronic pain, I'm at about a year into them. PCP stated that I will most likely be on them for the rest of my life. I'm 50. Due to the Opioid Crisis in this country, it is always on the news. Though I take my pills precisely as prescribed, never doubling up, the press makes me feel like I'm an addict. A criminal addict! It feels awful. But just to be able to walk or stand for five minutes, I have to have the Lortabs. I'm almost ashamed. I am still in pain despite the pills, but I am afraid to ask for a higher dose or use another pain pill because I believe that one gets "used" to them and they feel like they don't work as well. I don't want to ask for, say, Oxycodone, because I feel I'll just get used to them too over time and then where do I go? My PCP says she may send me to a pain clinic, because she does not dispense anything over my current dose or a stronger pill. That's ok with me, but I don't know what a pain clinic does. I'm not addicted to pain pills, I never misuse, sell or share them. I am dependent on them. But as far as how well it controls or eases my pain, I think they work less now. The only thing I can think of is that my body is used to them and I don't get the benefits from them like I used to. But they still help, a little. I could only assume that I am becoming resistant to them. Does that help? I can only offer my experience and tell you you are not alone. Good luck with your new PCP, I hope they can help you. Thank you so much for your reply. That is exactly how I feel. I too, take them responsibly. I took them before my surgery and then I also had shoulder surgery a couple of months ago. I think that if my doctor would just prescribe One more per day I would be ok. I know I might have built up a tolerance but I would still not be taking that many and it is true that I am not absorbing the full amount since my bypass. I saw my doc this week and she started me on a non narcotic pill, Gabapentin. The generic form of neurontin. I read on internet that people are given it for epilepsy and seizures and for nerve pain from herpes. Yikes.. But I also read that Dr's prescribe for arthritis pain and back pain. The thing is, my pain is in joints and bone spurs are not really nerve related. So far it just makes me sleepy. She is still continuing the 3 Vicodin a day so at least I have something that works. Even if it is still not being absorbed efficiently. Is Lortab the liquid form of Vicodin? What dosage works for you? I too am going to be on pain meds forever. It honestly helps me function and enables me to live life in a more normal fashion. I am wondering if I need to see a pain specialist. Like you, I have taken them at the same amount for years and have only increased once and that's because of the shoulder surgery. If I was going to be an addict I would not have stayed at the same strength for so long and they would not be lasting me for the full month! Sorry, just venting. I'd appreciate staying in touch because it sounds like we have a similar problem. Thanks for lending an ear! I look forward to seeing how things work out for you. I've Been Sleeved!

Hi Trish, I didn't have a problem with reflux in any chronic way prior to my sleeve surgery. After being sleeved I had maybe 3 episodes at night awakening me from my sleep, but I was not on a PPI at that time which is recommended for several months to a year after WLS to prevent ulcers (due to excess stomach acid production). I decided to take a PPI for the following reasons, 1. fear of ulcers--after finding out that a friend of mine who refused to take a PPI after having the gastric bypass almost died from bleeding ulcers a few weeks after her surgery. 2. Most WL surgeons do put their patients on a PPI as I've already stated. 3. I had/have this over production of mucus and read on a thread here somewhere that sometimes that is an unusual symptom of reflux, like the body's way of protecting itself from too much acid production. I have lost a total of 70 lbs. I've approximately 30lbs to go to reach goal. Aciphex is what I am taking once a day in the AM w/or w/out food as per directions. I tried some others but experienced unpleasant side effects, not with the Aciphex, it's working out well for me. Hope that helps.

    Acid and decision for surgery

I'm getting the bypass. I was told the sleeve can give even people who have never had this trouble, have it afterwards. And if you already have it, it will just compound the issue. When he said cancer that was it for me. He's a very pronouned surgeon and does seminars and writes books. Top surgeon in the area. Idk. I would like to trust what he is saying. Everyone will do as they choose but even tho I don't want the bypass that's what I will be having.

    Acid and decision for surgery

I had GERD prior to surgery, but I found out that it was likely caused by a hiatal hernia (your surgeon should have you do an upper GI series or endoscopy prior to surgery which will diagnose whether you have a hernia or not). Because my surgeon would be able to repair the hernia during my sleeve surgery, he felt like my GERD would not be problem -- and it hasn't, it's been gone since my hernia was repaired. If I had not been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, I would have gone for a gastric bypass. No way would I have a sleeve surgery with GERD unrelated to a hernia. Gastric bypass is a great surgery and there is no reason to be afraid of it. If you haven't, you should meet (in person) some people who have had gastric bypass and discuss the surgery and their results with them.
  12. The possible saving grace, is that people who want to test run the sleeve, can revise to RNY. (I understand it would be a second surgery and all that that brings.) I do think I'd follow surgeon's advise. I do believe it's smart to preop investigate the cause.
  13. Aloha all, My gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for April 21, 2014. I've done such a good job logging my food and making healthy eating choices since December when I joined my hospitals program, but since actually scheduling my surgery a week ago though I've found it so hard to avoid my old pitfalls. Perhaps now I have, "this is my last chance" mentality- but it is ruining all the work I've done so far. I have had nightmares about gaining weight and then denying me the day if my surgery because of it. This has been a logistic nightmare to plan because I'm a teacher and have to take so much time off work. I would love some encouraging words, stories or tips to get me through my last 29 days before surgery. Thanks all!

    Hydration

I was drinking like 30 oz in week 1 and 60oz in week 2 but with bypass... Everyone is different though.
  15. Worst comment I heard.. "You took the easy way out..." This is by No means the easy way out. It is a psychologically and physically tough for the bypass patient and the immediate family. People are so inconsiderate of others feelings.

    Upset About Sleep Apnea!!

I know a woman who went through bypass, has lost a tremendous amount of weight, and is one of the people in the few percent that the sleep apnea did not go away for. It's always a possibility that you may need the machine for a short time, or that it will be long term.

I had my gastric bypass at Swedish Seattle in 2013. I'm very happy with them Kat..????????????????????????????????????
  21. I'm considering a revision as well. I'm 8.5 months out and stalling. My Dr reccomend the ds, but I chose the sleeve. Wondering @GreenTealael are you asking about the other surgeries ds/sips because it is a better choice than rny? Good luck on future decisions!
  22. This. I think it's very important to take into the equation why one wants/needs a revision. Anyway, results regarding revision and weight loss seem to vary a lot.
  23. I had the sleeve and did the revision to the mini and if I could go back and not do the revision I would. I have gained back everything I lost and more, I have consistent reflux and vomit bile almost daily. I recently had a surgeon tell me that the mini was the worst choice for me and the surgeon who performed it, never should have. Not saying this is the same situation for you, but this was just my personal experience

    may2018 bypass for pcos

I have PCOS (lifetime member). It was one of the reasons I had bypass. I'm loving it. Am losing steady but not like lightening. My A1c continues to improve as do other symptoms like BP. My insulin is still high, but I am still VLC (very low carb). So the combination is going to help really well.
  25. I am 12 days postop. Feel great. I am a band revision. Have been able to drink normal since day one. When will I feel restriction and how and where do you feel it?
