  1. I was trying to get approved to go from sleeve to bypass because I have regained the weight I lost. But it sounds like people are saying that the surgery could get rid of my GERD problem. Is that the case?
  2. I think that’s the root of the problem here, I am a little shocked that your surgeon didn’t have a nutritionist as part of a team and a nutritional manual to help guide you through each phase of the bariatric surgery process including the fact that this is a lifelong tool that you use to make permanent lifestyle changes to your way of eating and perceptions of food. Perhaps gastric bypass surgery might have been more appropriate for you long term. If you can speak to a surgeon, do so. But a nutritionist and nutritional guidelines based on your personal needs and doing the head work of seeing this as a tool for life change in you way of eating and perceptions of food are very important. My story is long and boring. But I’ve fought my weight a long long time. But with this tool I hope to Finally reach goal and maintain the weight. I’m always afraid to lose that control. I track daily weight calories and protein as well as what foods I’ve eaten. Extreme maybe but takes a few seconds to do. In general it’s good to always keep to set rules for yourself. Some people find low carb helpful, combining intermittent fasting helpful as well. I need to be very strict with my calories due to metabolic disorders and inability to exercise. first step is to remember why you had the surgery. All the best to you in whatever you decide to do.

    Third Revision...

Sadly, I am in this situation as well. Lap bad in 2008. Lost a good amount of weight but that was because I was sick an d non stop vomiting. Could not tolerate any restriction in the band at all. Revised to sleeve in 2014. Have battled severe reflux for years. Main reason for another revision is REFLUX. Sure, I hope to lose the rest of this weight, but if I can get some relief from constant bile and acid in my throat, this will be a success for me.

    Third Revision...

For some of us with GERD (acid reflux) caused by a VSG sleeve, the alternative to re-routing intestines is Barrett's Esophagus which carries like a 1% per year risk of Esophageal cancer. Sleeves create a pressure system where acid is much more likely to spew up and out. I really wish I had done RBG in the first place vs. having to get revised to it, although I kept off my weight with the sleeve the reflux, which was new after I got it, was a miserable situation for 7 years.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

I had my band placed in 2009, lost and maintained 89lbs for 7+ years. then in 2017 i got the flu and slipped my band.... So out came the band. I looked on and off for years for someone to revise.... but keep getting NOOOO you don't weigh enough. Over that time i put on 30lbs of the weight i lost. Went from 143 to 173.5. I was so depressed that i was doing everything i could and i was still gaining.... Crossfit, starving my self, diet pill.... nothing worked. I was weeks away from going to Mex to get the MGB when i happen to call a local dr. He agreed to see me. We talked and he said that because i had had the band that he could do a revision even though it was 2.5+ years out. He just had to note it in the file that i was a previous bander. So Aug 28, 2019 i revised to the sleeve. I had to pay out of pocket 14K. Worth every penny. As of today... down 38.5lbs in 19 weeks. 5'1" (now 51 y/o) 2009: SW: 232, LW: 135, but my most consistent weight was 143. Size 20 to a size 6 2019: SW: 173.5, CW: 135. Size 4-6 Pros of the band, i had total control of my diet. What i ate and didn't eat and if i ate too much, i "got rid of it". Sleeve, no maintenance. I can't eat nearly the amount of what i ate with the band. 2-3 bites and im done, but i'm hungry again in about an hour. I've only had two episodes of vomiting in 19 weeks. If your dr. will do a revision at the same time as a removal..... i would do it. Look into the Mini GB. Its what i really wanted, but my dr doesn't do them. So i choose to go with the sleeve and be 10 min from his office..... vs having to fly to Mex.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

I'm one of the lap band 50% failure rate statistics. I had mine over 10 years, and then had a slip and developed a hiatal hernia. 6 weeks ago I had the band removed, the hernia repaired and a revision to a RNY bypass. I dropped 20 pounds in three weeks. The weight is s-l-o-w-l-y dribbling off now, but even only 25 pounds down my knees hurt less and I move around a lot more. I haven't regretted it once. Check around and find a surgeon that will do the removal and revision in one surgery. My surgeon recommended the bypass because he said it was easier to revise to a bypass after having a lap band for years-scar tissue issues-and what catwoman7 said, many people who have NEVER had GERD develop it after a sleeve, and I had it terrible before I got my band. Good luck--don't be afraid to "doctor shop" until you find one. I had to go 4 hours away to a large urban area to find one, but I LOVE the one I found.

Lap Band Removal and Revision Suggestions Needed

a TON of people have had lapbands revised to sleeve or bypass for the reasons you mentioned. It's either that or risk being miserable the rest of your life. I'd go with a revision if it were me. Either of those two surgeries would be a good option, although if you're suffering from GERD, you may want to consider bypass. It often improves GERD, if not outright cures it.
  9. I had my lap band put in 2012. I lost 80 lbs the first year, maintained and then in 2016 had a prolapse and all my fluid removed. I never regained restriction from fills, just random days when my band would decide to be tight and I couldn't eat. By late 2018 I had gained all of my weight back. Mid 2019 I started to have reflux that lead into really bad chest pains. I even went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. After trying meds, and having an ultrasound I just had an upper GI yesterday. I still have a prolapse and irritation and it was recommended that I have the band removed. I am on the fence about having a revision....I don't think the doctors in my area will offer a revision within the same surgery as removing the band, and now that I have children I am more hesitant to have additional surgeries. Anyone have a good pro-con list of doing a revision?
  10. I am so sorry for the loss of your mother and the other things you are going through. I had my revision in Sept my weight at surgery time was 213. I also had severe GERD and a fistula, which is why my BMI didn't really matter. You and I are the same height so you may not have any issues getting a revision at your current weight. As far as the Alcoholism goes have you tried talking to your regular DR? Most bariatric surgeons also have you see someone, and they may be able to help. I also agree with the diversion therapy that AJ talks about. I wish you all the best!
  11. Sorry to hear that you've been going through a lot. Likely the alcohol is causing the GERD and you'd have to detox completely before undergoing another surgery. Your BMI might be too low at this point to qualify for a revision. But you have the opportunity to work on both issues if you focus first on the drinking part, have you tried AA? I don't think you're going to get your weight under control until you get your drinking under control. My surgeon's office has behavioral counselors as part of the program, does yours? Perhaps you could talk to them.

    December Surgeries!

Hello peeps, I had my revision from Lap-Band to Mini-Gastric Bypass on Dec 29th in Mexico at Mexico Bariatric Center. Today I'm 9 days Post-op and I feel pretty good. Still on the Full liquid phase which is fine for me because I have zero hunger and have no desire to eat anything. Yesterday was the first day I actually had some dizziness and nausea after I showered but I think it's my body adjusting to my vitamins. I'm using Patch vitamins from PatchMD. I went back to work yesterday (desk job) but only worked until noon due to the nausea. Took a zofran, slept all afternoon and when I woke up the nausea was gone. Today I feel much better.

    NSV!!

Yeah I feel great myself nsv I've dropped from 52 inch pants to 36/38. I can actually buy decent brands and feel good. 10 wks out from bypass 54lbs gone
  14. I was doing great with the sleeve. Then my husband started beating me, my autistic son became a "teenager".... insert dramatic scary music here.... and my mom died on Dec 21. Oh, and I have an amazing 4 yr old girl. I have been hitting the bottle. A lot. In the last 6mo I have regained 15lbs. I'm currently waiting for insurance to approve a revision surgery for my sleeve. I went from 287 lbs to 215 and now 228. My restriction is still pretty good, but I am so stressed out that I have to believe my excess calorie intake is my alcohol intake. I'm not sure what I am even asking, but does anyone know a good way to battle alcoholism and a good type of doctor that is knowledgeable about bariatric issues as well as alcohol issues? Not specifically looking for a particular doctor, but any ideas would be great. Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app

    3rd times a charm!

Well I personally chose the bypass because of the change of metabolism and absorption that comes with bypassing of the intestines; I've not had one single issue and feeling great lost 119lbs so far

    3rd times a charm!

Not exactly the same, but I had the band 2009, had it removed....may it burn for all eternity....then got the sleeve 2017, lost 70lbs....not goal weight, but good....and now I am suffering from fiery dragon vomit 2 yrs out, for people who like medical terms, GERD. SOOOO painful and miserable. So now I am trying to get a sleeve revision. Too scary for me to get anything messing with my intestines. At a minimum, I need a hiatal hernia repair. Third Revision...

I had the band, with minimal results. Went to the sleeve, AWESOME RESULTS! But now 2 years out, I have unbearable acid reflux. Like burning vomit saliva misery. I just went in to see if I could get a revision to my sleeve. My endoscopy is in a week to see what is going on. I refuse to get a bypass. I like knowing a tiny little banana of stomach is still alive and well. Just saying, I am on round 3. Over a 10 year span. Good luck [emoji106] Sent from my moto e5 supra using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. If I forget and drink too close to eating, I get very very sick. It has only happened a few times. I was researching caffeine after surgery and read this in one of the health articles. Caffeine causes dehydration and acts as an appetite stimulant. Carbonation can cause increased bloating and discomfort, especially after gastric bypass surgery. Drinking too soon before or after a meal will cause fullness and may lead to dumping syndrome.

6 days since surgery and my abs finally aren't hurting.

Your incisions are looking good! Totally different places that mine though. Of course mine was a revision from sleeve. I have one directly inside my belly button and one on the right side of belly. The others are all below my belly button. mine was also done robotically. I see another little cutie back behind Bruno. Did he get to go for a walk too? actually the more I look I think your incisions are about the same as mine were for sleeve.
  20. I'm 3 weeks post bypass surgery. First 2 weeks no issue with vomiting. Now 23 days post surgery still can't progress past stage 2 liquids due to sudden onset of vomiting the same liquids and amounts that I was successfully taking in the first 2 weeks. The worst part is it happens when just taking in small amounts of plain water. The first indications happened 4 days ago. Waiting for a call back from my surgeon's office, but in the meantime, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. As I prefaced my topic, I doubt it's dumping syndrome, as I have been siping small amounts of protein shakes or even just water several hours apart but vomiting has been happening for several days now.
  21. Hi to everyone - never been part of a forum. American living in Brussels, and have found that much, good medical tourism, for my type of surgery, in Turkey. Surgery scheduled for Staurday, 11 January 2020. Seeking any last-minute advice, particularly best dietary advice that may have helped others, in the days before surgery. Doing mostly Atkins shakes, and soups. FYI - total cost of surgery and seven days in Turkey (US$4,900). Surgeon has done over 700 gastric bypass surgeries.

Calories for the First Six Months Immediately after surgery, your doctor will place you on a liquid meal plan, which helps your stomach heal from surgery. You gradually progress to pureed and soft foods before eating solid foods and establishing a normal bariatric meal plan. Once you're able to eat solid foods, the typical gastric bypass meal plan for the first six months consists of three small meals and two snacks for a total of between 1,000 and 1,300 calories per day. Calorie Breakdown The goal of your post-surgery meal plan is to get enough nutrients while adjusting to the smaller size of your stomach. Aim to balance each meal with protein and vegetables or fruit and get at about 50 grams of protein daily. If you're following a 1,000- to 1,300-calorie post-surgery meal plan a good goal is to have two snacks contain 100 to 150 calories each. Based on the calorie range of this plan, your three main meals contain roughly 250 to 350 calories each.
  23. My only experience is Lapband to Sleeve. However, I had a former co-worker who had RNY and stretched out her pouch. Gained all her weight back, plus some. She had her RNY pouch revised to make it smaller again. I lost track of her, so I honestly can't tell you whether or not she was successful. Also, in my line of work I see a lot of medical records. I read a case where a sleeved patient had a revised sleeve.
  24. I’m a type 1 diabetic. I am scheduled to have my surgery done on the 13th of this month. I am having the gastric bypass done with Dr Lytle in Atlanta. My CW is 228 and I’m doing this for the benefit of reducing my insulin intake and losing this unwanted weight. Does anyone have any insight for me? Did this actually reduce your insulin intake? Also I’m on the minimed 670g system. Should help prevent them from needing to check my sugar at weird times of the night. Thanks in advance!!
  25. Your headline and first post are misleading. They imply / state you have GBP and are wondering if that can be revised. I would edit them to clarify you have band and want revision to GBP. That is very common here for the reasons you outlined later in the thread. But the title and first post seem to state you already have GBP so that's why the responses are confusing.
