Can someone please enlighten me.
stacy71 replied to damonlg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was originally wanted the sleeve but per the doctor the RNY/gastric bypass was better choice for me because I suffer from severe reflux/GERD. My Doctor personally stated the gastric bypass is reversible. -
Can someone please enlighten me.
damonlg replied to damonlg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did a huge amount of research before making my decision and one of the main reasons I went for a gastric bypass is that if you get complications you can reverse the operation as nothing is taken away. With a sleeve you remove most of the stomach so once it’s done it’s done. I found very few advantages to the sleeve and the Acid Reflux is a major reason why it soon became a no go for me. Another big factor is if you have diabetes a sleeve doesn’t really change that much, where a bypass can reduce it hugely or in some cases eliminate it completely. That is a huge reason to seriously consider a bypass over a sleeve. I am not trying to say that everyone should have a bypass, but every day I read more and more people who say Sleeve to bypass for me. Something seems wrong about that. I think you are right James, it seems to be on trend right now, which is extremely worrying. I get the feeling that most people get told what to have, rather than make there own decision based on evidence. I bet if the patients are told with a sleeve is final or with a bypass it’s reversible if you have complications, most would go for a bypass. Anyway rant over 🤣🤣 -
Just had first consult…settled on Gastric Bypass!
Jalapeño replied to carrielee's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You didn't explain your reasoning for choosing the gastric bypass. -
Snuff, I am a revision patient also. It sounds like you were full. The same area where I feel full now is around the area where my band used to be.

Is there any support group activity in or near Seattle Bellevue area, Western Washington?
CowgirlJane replied to Karenytrevision's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Over lake in Bellevue has one open to all - don't need to be a patient. 5 years ago I went once, very good, at the time bypass focused. -
Hi there new to here. I am 2 weeks post sleeve op. I had a few problems but they seem to be getting better. I have read numerous conversations on here that say basically the sleeve is a waste of tim and bypass is the way to go. Has anyone had success with sleeve and found it a good choice? Hope I didnt make the wrong choice.
-
I have met a few people that have gotten revisions but most people i've met that got the sleeve are happy with it (but so are pretty much most of the people that have gotten the bypass too).

I am a VSG to RnY revision but not because my VSG failed me, because of GERD. I didn’t hit my weight goal but I lost 47% of my excessive weight and maintained until my revision. I do know I learned a lot between surgery 1 & 2 and my biggest take away is my surgery didn’t fail me but I definitely failed my surgery. Your tool, or whatever you call it, doesn’t decide what you eat or when you eat. It doesn’t choose to drink while eating or to graze. You get out of it what you put into it.

My revision date is tentatively set for 12/5

100CM BYPASS anyone? Pros Cons of length?
MaybeMeow posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Gang. Can the Bypassers weigh in? I'm scheduled for a Bypass on June 29th and just had my last visit with my surgeon who told me he would be doing a 100cm bypass. Does this seem short? My concerns regarding the Bypass were the malabsorption and dumping. I know some people value these to help them stay on track but I do not so I thought the sleeve would be best. But I suffer from reflux and have since I was a kid so Bypass was recommended. I believe my concerns about Bypass are why my surgeon chose this "100 cm size". However, from my research most people do twice as much. Thoughts on the pros and cons? Would love to hear from other 100 cm Bypassers. Thanks! -
I made the decsion As I had serious health issues and I am wheelchair dependant. Being morbidly obese with a BMI of over 60, my independance was at imminent risk, for me that was a bigger issue than early death. may seem strange, but I think that I got desensitized to the message that fat would kill me, sure something will kill me! so for me, forced dependancy was far worse. Quality of life stuff. I knew that WLS was my only real option and dd not like the thought of the more invasve procedure like RNY gastric bypass. I knew someone who had gastric bypass- she lsot the weight and kept most off but has had to deal with severe nutritional imbalances and anaemia since then and probably for the rest of her lfe. She s happy wth the decision but I guess I liked the idea that as the band is adjustable it could be fine tuned over my life- even removed if needed and the underlying anatomy basically is back to square one. None of us know what the future hold so I did not want to burn any bridges with permanent anatomy changes if I could achieve what I needed with less invasve surgery. my surgeon is one of the australian pioneers, he has been doing band surgery since the early 90's and has been doing wls in generla for longer. He is Professor of bariatric surgey. He has not done anything but the band for over 6 yrs as he said the long term stats show better success rates for the band and far less complications, the rsk of death from the procedure is as high as 1 in 200 for the other surgeries and less than 1 in 2000 for the band. One of the biggest units doing this surgery in Australia for the longest time has said that they have not had a single death from the band that was attributed directly to the band surgery. thevery small number of deaths that have occured have been related to the co morbs or completely unrelated stuff. same long term results with far less rsk was the final piece of the puzzle

Advice regarding "Omentum Separation"
RestlessMonkey replied to Gerberdayzee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't want to be a guinea pig unless I just absolutely HAD to, as in using a drug to save my life when all others failed. If I wanted things cut up and rerouted, there are surgeries that have been "tried and tested" (like the sleeve, bypass, the duodenal switch) for me to choose from. I wouldn't mess with my omentum. For me the beauty of the band is that my "innards" remain intact. Only you can decide this. Personally, I'd say no. (San Antonio has a LOT of "clinical trials". Usually the patients receive the med or procedure, and concommitant medical care for free, PLUS some compensation. Will they cover your surgery, if you are willing to be the experimentee? What is "plan B" if it does you damage? I'd ask this, if I decided maybe to proceed!) -
Thank you for answering my post about depression. So sorry you have to go through this too. It is horrible. I have my good days and bad days I do take wellbutrim and t does take the edge off. I am lke you without my faith that there is a living God who loves and cares about me that I can talk to everyday I would not get out of bed. I have had my Band 2+ years and the Band helped with the weight but not the depression. The weight is not the cause of the depression but a side affect of the depression. But my husband and I agreed the depression is not something I can cure myself but the depression and the weght were too much for me. I was 251 and am now 169 a tight size 18 to a loose size 10, so that does make me feel better. I am still believeing God will not make me live the rest of my life living like this. I am waiting for healing, I know He can and I want it. So you are thinking about the Band? It Is a good thing. I might would have done the Bypass but I was self pay and could not afford it. But now I am glad I went with the Band. With the Bypass I could have lost even more weight but too many risks. I have really had no problems with the band, too tight twice but no biggie they just take some out and I do throw up but always have and no slip or problem. I have been married for 31 years to a wonderful supportive man and have a great son and a wonderful daughter-in-law and the most beautiful grandbabies Olivia 5 and Isabella 2 both blond hair and blue eye and both left handed like my son. They all are the joy I have in this world. I fear my depression will ruin their lives too. I spend a lot of time faking happiness as to not ruin their time. But it is hard sometimes. But I would never want to cause my grandbabies any unhappiness or set a bad example. The oldest one Olivia does know that grandma does get sad sometimes but that it is okay. She is more concerned about my Band, she tells everyone, people in the store, or when we are out to eat everyone, does not bother me. She thinks she can feel the band because she can feel the port really easy. (it is by bra line). She always ask me if I am going to eat something “Is that healthly grandma”. She is so funny. So you see I have a wonderful family my husband and I made, but really no relationship with my family. They are all into drugs and drinking which I do not do. My daddy died when I was 10 and my brother who also suffered from depression overdose last Christmas on prescription drugs, his and someone elses. It was a terrible death he would have never wanted people to see him like that in a coma on life support for 2 days it was terrible but he was one of the saddest people I have ever known but would not accept help. I have been throught 3 years of counseling and learned a lot of coping skills and that I have probably been depressed my whole life but was too busy being a mom to care about myself and kept it all inside. When my son married I kinda lost my identity and it opened the door for the depression to surface. I am gonna stop writing now as I have written a book, more than you wanted to know I am sure. So sorry it took me a few days to answer you but like I said I have my good days and bad days. Cheri

wow, lot's of fellow cnyer's. congrats to all that have had it done & are doing so well. i'm just beginning to research. i was about to do the surgical bypass, but decided against it. a co-worker had had it done & had serious complications. i thought i was out of luck until i saw the lap-band commercials. i went to my family dr. & told him i wanted to have this done & he's all for it. my diabetes is out of control, my b.p. is pretty high; meds control that, and my cholesterol is pretty high. i had my grandson here for the week...chasing a 2-1/2 yr old around really made me think i should get moving on this SOON. i'm not getting any younger or thinner just sittin' here. keep up the good work fellow nyer's...let's make ny a healthier place to live  -
Eee gads you should have seen some of the pictures that Pascal had for when he lectures, to show how not to do it!! It was enough to make you gag. Some of the transformations on there are truly amazing though arent they, there is one lady in particular who is on the first page when you go into the tummy tuck albums who is such an inspiration, she is a gastric bypass lady and OMG you should see her now!!! I havent had my last minute panic yet, I am kind of waiting for it, I cant be this calm and just excited can I? I hope that I dont get it after the surgery, that would be a major bummer! LOL How are you doing LJM still fighting the good fight against the Cookies?

I have lost enough pre op that I have about 75 pounds left to loose but I’m having the bypass because of gerd and that my Metabolism level is so low that bypass helps with the malabsorption which can help me maintain my weight loss longer -

https://obesitynewstoday.com/bariatric-surgery-reversibility/ "In addition to reducing the size of the stomach, the gastric bypass also rearranges the digestive system, which is why it is usually not reversible." https://www.realself.com/question/gastric-bypass-reversible "Gastric Bypass surgery is considered a permanent operation but can be reversed for medical problems only. The risks of a reversal are extremely high." So, "potentially" reversible, but reversing is almost never done due to complications. The band can be removed, the sleeve, your pouch can and will stretch out, but the bypass, the restriction plus the rerouting of your intestines, this surgery should not be considered "reversible" as a justification for getting it. -
I am curious that so many people are going from Sleeve to bypass. What is the reasoning behind this. Do you not have the option to go straight to the bypass. Can someone enlighten me. Concerned it’s a just using us patients to make more money for the doctors by getting 2 operations from us?

BAND TO SLEEVE REVISION QUESTION
Brigette posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Good Morning Sleevers!! I have a question regarding the ability to eat without effort 4 oz. of food. I feel that I can easily eat more but, stop myself at that point. My surgery date was 9 Feb 15, so, I am about 2 1/2 weeks out. I started soft foods 1 week after surgery (fish, tuna, green beans). I guess each Surgeon is different. My surgery was completely pain-free and, though I am off work for 6 weeks, I could have gone to work the same week. I am losing fine (hit a stall now but, not too worried) but I am concerned that if I am able to eat so much now, in a month I will be eating a much larger portion. Also, it takes me about 5-10 minutes to eat meal. I have forced myself to slow down to minimum of 20 minutes. I can drink 32 oz of Water in about 5-10 minutes too. I can't eat salads yet. Sorry for the long post!! My actual question is: Are you or were you able to eat so much 2 1/2 weeks out or, is this due to my having a revision? Let me give an sample of a days worth of food: 1st meal: Protein shake 11 oz. mixed in my decaf coffee about 10 oz. 30 minutes later: water, water, water 2nd meal: 1 scrambled egg with 1 oz. of chicken and laughing cow wedge water 3rd Meal: 4 oz. grilled chicken breast w laughing cow wedge or chicken salad w light mayo 30 minutes later: water, water, water 32-40 oz. 4th Meal: 4 oz. grilled chicken breast, 4 green Beans water w Crystal Lite 5th meal: Protein Shake or string cheese with 1 slice of budding turkey wrapped around water, water, water -

Any February Surgery Dates...
csjenkins09 replied to youngme's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am have gastric bypass Feb. 26th. I have been waiting since June 2015 to complete my program requirements and waiting for my surgery date. Super excited and scared all at the same time. I know different surgeons require different pre-op diets but mine is no more than 800 calories daily, protein shakes only with the exception of 1 sub. of diet juice or sugar-fee Popsicles for 2 weeks. Really dreading that part, but I know it is totally going to be worth it. It is going to be hard to cooking dinner for my family for those weeks but something I will have to get used to. -
Personally, I didnt choose bypass because I didnt want the malabsorption part, the dumping (vomiting or Sh^ting over the moon) when you eat certain things with too much sugar in them. That did not sound like a very pleasant existence. I chose the sleeve for me because it would limit the amount of food I could eat, not what I could eat. Granted, we have to eat protein first but that doesnt feel like a diet to me. I always want the meat over the veggies anyway. It fit my lifestyle better. If I want a sweet treat, one or two bites and Im great! I dont feel the need to eat the whole cake or whatever like before. With the bypass, that bite or two of cake or pie will send you straight to the john for Montezuma's revenge. I have freinds who have had the bypass and thats what they tell me. So, its a personal decision but these were my reasons for choosing the sleeve and I am 7 months post op and doing wonderfully. I love my sleeve!!!!!

YAY FOR FRESH VEGGIES!!!
1-4-Many replied to apple-saucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A good friend who had gastric bypass had her only horrible moment on a taco out to eat with her husband. She's never eaten a taco since. This was like 3 years after her surgery! That's always in the back of my mind........ and not a pretty image. Oh...and what was your surgery date? I can't wait to be able to test fresh veggies.
