Questions and concerns on malabsorption
spiritfilled posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am considering bypass surgery. My BMI is a little over 38 and I have very bad GERD with Barrette's esophagus and a hernia. Because I am obese, my surgeon as said that if the hernia were fixed, it still may not completely help the GERD because I am obese. I have been considering bypass surgery for someone time now, but had other things come up. He has told me that Bypass surgery will solve my GERD problem and he can fix the hernia while he is in there. I had originally wanted a sleeve but he said because of the GERD, he would suggest the bypass. One of my major concerns with the bypass is malabsorption. There is a lady at work who had the bypass and is on 5000 mgs of Vitamin D and is now in the beginning stages of osteoporosis. Malabsorption is a major concern of mine and one of the reasons I wanted the sleeve to begin with. I am wondering how big of a concern has this been to you? Should it be a concern? Any info is appreciated -

Welcome, Julie! This is a great place to learn just about everything you need to know about WLS. Are you having gastric bypass? I had my bypass surgery Monday and it is a whole new world! Congratulations to you for going through all of the requirements to become a healthier version of you! -
I started going in 2009 for band adjustments after I moved Was told the only one the area. I moved to Fremont from San Jose 2 years ago and noticed they has a program but she my dr put in a transfer I never heard so I have been continuing up there. Now that I had my revision surgery I think I'm going to try and transfer again as I would love to be 5 min away instead if 45-1 hr.

Research: Bariatric Surgery Revisions Carry Greater Risks Than Initial Procedure
kareyquilts replied to jcondron's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Interesting articles. I had revision surgery for a slipped lap band and had a new lap band placed 1 1/2 years ago. The new band slipped twice and I had my lap band removed totally a month ago. I'm sure that is a complication of revision surgery because my surgeon said that I had so much scar tissue from my previous surgeries that the scar tissue pushed my band up into my esophagus. Certainly this is a complication of revision surgery? -

Congrats on your revision! Not "running hot" all the time is a real change for me too! I'm going to have to crochet myself some shawls pretty soon just to stay warm!

First--Hello LBT Ive been reading forums and blogs for a few days now and I feel like I know all of you already, a feeling that I love. My nerves have been a wreck lately so I was extremely grateful to find this site and even more relieved that I can blog about my experience(I love to write!) Sighhh. Ok so lets get started. I was born without a thyroid gland. I have been fat since birth lol. Although I think this 'worked' for me as a baby and toddler(I think I am the cutest baby since sliced bread) When I was about 5 I remember starting to hear relatives comments about my weight and they never seemed to stop. I have been what I consider 'skinny' for 3 times in my life. In 8th grade, In 12th grade and then again at age 25. Each time seems to last a little under 6 months. The weight always comes back with a vengeance. Im now at age 29, my big 3-0 is right around the corner and I do not want to enter my 30s with the same problem. I really want to be able to be 'free' of diets, even though I know this upcoming diet will be the queen of all diets but thats ok, because I think the LapBand will really help me. I know its not a quick fix and I believe in myself that I can follow the diet afterwards. I notice something I always wish is that I could have a do-over with my body. I started considering weight loss surgery approximately 6 months ago, at the urging of my endocrinologist and even an urgent care doctor, who took the time to talk to me about my weight and seeming like he genuinely cared about me. One thing I will say is that I have been blessed with awesome doctors so far, and they have often moved me to tears. So I considered gastric bypass, the sleeve and the lapband. All 3 have about the equal amount of terror for me. I had my seminar Thursday and I was hoping that it would ease my fears and it did a little but not as much as I had hoped. I think what Im most afraid of is that I am going to get a bad band. I seem to have bad luck in every area of my life, and thats ok, but this bad luck will be in my body and wont be so easy to fix. If I could get a good band, I think I will be ok. Soooo...tomorrow is my consult. Im so nervous. I know I will probably have to lose 10% of my body weight but how on earth will I do this? Its going to take forever. Also, how long does the pre-auth take, how many times do I have see a counselor, do they recommend a counselor for you? How long does the process take, from the consult to the day of surgery? So here I go...wish me luck :)

For me, it was important to go with the band once I had decided to pursue weight loss surgery because it didn't involve cutting or removing any parts of my digestive system. I knew conventional diets weren't working for me, but I couldn't bring myself to purposely mutilate my digestive tract, which is healthy and fully functional. That was the key FOR ME. Personal opinion only. At the same time, I find sleeve gastrectomy more attractive than RNY gastric bypass because it's not malabsorptive; the intestines aren't bypassed, so it doesn't cause dumping syndrome or dependence on Vitamin supplements. (Although the fact that the large part of the stomach is REMOVED and THROWN AWAY is a little disturbing to me.) However, critics of the sleeve say many of the same things critics say about the band: that because there aren't dire consequences (dumping) for eating fatty or sugary foods, it's easier to "eat around" than RNY. But when it comes right down to it, anyone can "beat" any of the surgeries and either fail to lose or even gain weight post-op if they try hard enough. It's just a tool. You can make any of the surgeries work for you, and you can work against any of them. It's just that some are better fits for different people in different circumstances. I hope you get all the information you need to find the best fit for you. Good luck!

How much support is your spouse giving you?
sweetbean70 replied to spoiltmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I first told my hubby that I was going to be banded, he was reluctant. His fear was that I would follow the same path as me ex-SIL (key word being EX). She went from 232lbs to 91lbs via gastric bypass about 8-9 years ago. After losing all the weight, she decided that she didn't love my brother anymore, was tired of being a mother, and walked out on her family to be with another man. She currently looks like a "crack ho." Due to not following the required dietary requirements associated w/ the GP, she has had to have all of her teeth pulled and wears dentures, her hair is so thin she looks almost bald, she looks like she has aged about 20 years, and worst of all, she is now having seizures. I told my hubby that I love him. I did NOT "settle" for him because I felt too fat to "get" anyone else. I told him that my main reason for being banded was for my health. I had just been diagnosed with insulin resistance (a precursor to Type 2 diabetes) and with my bad kidneys, I didn't want to end up like my mother (kidney transplant in 2004) or my grandmother (died of kidney failure in 2004). He certainly understood my concerns about the health issues and decided to research the LAP-BAND® procedure. After truly understanding what the procedure is about and feeling secure about my feelings for him, he became my biggest supporter. :scared2: -
Thanks for the info. I am waiting on a call from Dr. Provost office for a second opinion. which I no longer know if it is going to matter. I called my insurance yesterday and they said they do not cover gastric bypass or the removal of my band. I don't know what to do and am quiet concerned. I have been reading how esopheal dilation can turn into cancer and I sure don't want that ugly beast. I started on liquids and am doing okay with that. I actually have several things to consider here. I have PKD and my kidneys are functioning at 37% currently (down 10% in 6 months). when I reach 10% or there abouts I will have to have diaylsis. I also know that being overweight while on dialysis is hard on your overall health. And in the event I am fortunate enough to get a transplant that will put additional weight on me (most probably) which will again be harder on my kidneys and over all health. At this time I feel that it is SO important to get the weight off to avert more possible problems. But now I don't know how I can get anything done. Of course it would be better to get it done sooner than later since my kidneys are where they are right now. so I guess support and contact from the band world will help me through. I was sleeved 22/12/16, lost 19 pounds and been stalled for about a week. Getting discouraged because I am following my plan and getting my Protein and Water. Hope it kicks back in soon. Starting to wonder if I should have done bypass instead. HW 280 SW 257 CW 239 sleeve surgery 12/12/16

Why is this ALL I'm thinking about now!?
Band07 replied to KalelsWifey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was a band patient, then sleeve and as of Thursday (4/23) Mini bypass. I never had any regrets or hesitations with the first two but for some reason even though I'm physically doing pretty good, I'm even back at work today, I've had a terrible time emotionally with this one! I keep feeling like wtf did I just do to myself? I'm scared to death now of a life of being sick and dumping. -
Why you can't drink immediately after eating
Christinamo7 replied to joei0005's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my understanding is that it is different for people with a sleeve and RNY due to the valve at the bottom of the stomach that regulates how quickly food leaves the stomach. however the sleeve can't stretch very much as they have removed most of the stretchy part of the stomach. you can and will have it sort of reflux back into your esophagus if you eat too much or drink a bunch with eating. not a pleasant feeling. happened a couple of times with drinks early on when my stomach was swollen and I was still getting the hang of things. With the RNY my understanding is it can very well empty the stomach quicker with the bypass bit of it. -
Did you pick or did you follow Dr.'s recommendation.. How did you decide?
imsoglad56 replied to gobeit's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I picked, and my doctor agreed with me. I never considered lap-band as an option as I did not want to have to deal with the fills, etc., because my surgeon is a two hour drive away. So I was looking at sleeve vs. bypass and I just felt more comfortable with the sleeve so that's what I did. I'm one year and one week post-op and have lost 126 pounds so far and still losing slowly. I'm happy with my choice and would make it again in a heartbeat. -

RNY 21 years ago looking to revise
Karen Dean posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my gastric bypass in 2000, I was one of the first to do it in the UK. 21 years later and some non weight related illness I have regained half of the weight I lost. I was 300lbs and went to 140lbs. It's only in the past 5 years the regain has really started. I am looking at having a minimizer ring fitted. Has anyone here done this? What was the outcome. Is it like day one after your original surgery? Any information would be greatfully received. Thanks x -
Anyone else have a bypass booked for July?

My BMI is 33 and I have GERD so I was approved for gastric bypass. Can I expect a substantial weight reduction? Anyone else a low BMI patient? I still need to lose 50-60 lbs.

Why is this ALL I'm thinking about now!?
KalelsWifey replied to KalelsWifey's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congratulations @@feelinggood! Your not alone, I so cried when my surgeon was speaking to me right before they wheeled me into the or. I have been speaking to numerous people who've gone thru either sleeve or bypass and the concensus is this: initially we are making these crazy drastic changes. Doing so much good for our body. Getting it healthy so we can correct our initial mistakes of more than likely overindulgence. When we reach our points of what makes us feel great, energetic, beautiful or handsome we can then introduce in extreme modification those little thimgs we once enjoyed. I've began to understand carbonation will absolutely ruin your ability to completely maintain as it is a main trigger for weight gain bc it slowly allows you to stretch your pouch and not allow you to feel the restriction of maybe one or two Hershey's kisses and suddenly you've had twelve... I love sprite. It's absolutely delish to me, but when I began this journey I said if I want this bad enough this is what will ruin me and set me up to fail so I can give you up! I'm glad your doing well. Three weeks out is great. I imagine you still on your moist, soft proteins, you can't go eat everything right? -

New here- looking for advice on lapband revision!
ama2414 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I'm new to this site. I had Lapband surgery in 2005, with no results. I'm thinking about having it removed and possibly getting a different surgery. I'm not sure what would be best for me to look into! Anyone with a similar scenario? Thanks! -Amanda -
Switching from the Sleeve to the Roux en Y
shaines9 replied to Ineedhelp2014's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Since I started this journey I always wanted RNY. For some reason I started second guessing myself & wanting the sleeve. As soon as I got my upper endoscopy & found out I had mild reflux I stuck with RNY because I don't want to mess with GERD & have to revise later.
