  1. Or at least an upper gi. Michelle Post op revision band to bypass 9-28-17 Sw 276 Day of surgery 252 Cw 248 Goal Healthy BMI 154.

    Spasms and cramping

If you are getting 50 ounces in at 3 days post op you are doing well. You are going through a healing process so you can't expect to get in so quickly. After my sleeve 2 years ago it took me 3 to 4 weeks to get that much Fluid in. You'll get to the goal amounts don't rush yourself. I am having a revision to RNY in August so I'm dreading having to do it all again.
  3. I have a relative who had the lapband and that relative now drinks milkshakes every day and is regaining weight. I'm not yet sleeved. I have anxieties about regaining weight. I am inspired by CLK's post about the fact that our stomachs will never be able to hold the same amount of food again. Also, the sleeve (in theory at least) eliminates or reduces the part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone. Yes, I'm scared of regaining weight. But I am going to go ahead and try the sleeve. And if I regain, I will go for gastric bypass. Even waiting on surgery has made me think differently about eating. I am much more aware of how I eat too much at every meal. I wish you and everyone else with the VSG the greatest success. It's a journey.
  4. I'm two years out. I'm currently pregnant, but prior to this I was easily maintaining my loss despite eating pretty much whatever I want, within reason. I weigh daily to keep myself accountable and gauge my leeway each day based upon what the scale says and I've had no real problems. I have zero regrets with my sleeve. I only wish I had known about the surgery and chosen to have it done sooner. It is always possible to eat around any WLS, so yes, you could gain weight once you're at goal if you aren't careful. For me, the best approach was to NOT use the sleeve like a diet, but instead to incorporate moderation and variety (and carbs!) into my diet long before I reached goal. Everyone is different, but in my case, I would have viewed reaching goal differently if I had spent the previous seventeen months restricting carbs and calories down to nothing. I would have gone on a hell of a binge, I know that from past experience. Doing the head work and eliminating my poor eating habits and emotional eating prior to goal is what I credit for my easy time in maintenance. I have seen nobody gain all of their weight back with the sleeve. I have never seen a total regain post, EVER, and I've been here more than three years (I lurked a long while before making a profile). I've seen people that stall out and stop losing, but even most of those folks maintain the loss and don't regain. They get about halfway to goal and peter out and fall back into bad habits and stop losing as a consequence. But the good news is that it's very easy to not only pick it back up at any point after surgery, but to lose any regained weight very quickly. Because the sleeve is NOT a bypass, with a limited window of malabsoption and a stretchy pouch. Once you remove 85% of your stomach, it's gone forever. Through real effort (and pain) you might be able to stretch it out about an ounce or two, but it's not giving more than that. It will never, ever hold a massive plate of food again. It's possible to eat around it, but it takes dedication and around the clock snacking on slider foods to do it. A sleeve is just as restrictive more than two years out as it was at one year out. There's no reason you can't lose weight on it, provided your body doesn't have something else going on, no matter how far out from surgery you get. ~Cheri
  5. I've just joined the community today and have gone through most of the discussions. But stating this obvious question once again to gain some comfort in deciding to go under the knife. I desperately need your wisdom to help me decide. I’m obese, type-2 diabetic for the past 9 years (I’m 40 yrs now) with uncontrollable blood sugar levels all this while. This summer my tests had traces of Microalbumin and a follow-up test in autumn confirmed Microalbuminuria (Incipient Diabetic Nephropathy, early stages of Chronic Kidney Disease). It was like a bolt from the blue! If I do not take control, I could progress the stages of CKD and also risk having other complications (like hypertension, heart disease and eye diseases). I've consulted an Obesetologist and a Bariatric Surgeon to understand the bariatric surgery options for BMI 36.0 and my comorbidities. They've advised me Gastric Bypass Surgery. I can fund my surgery if Insurance declines. While engaging the doctors and follow-up tests I've also started to follow strict low-carb diet and follow a good exercise regime. In the last 3 months, I dropped weight and now at BMI 28.5 and blood sugar level is at normal levels for a month now. Here is where the confusion is - I know the risks of the chronic disease like Diabetes and Nephropathy + others. I'm only 40 and need to strictly follow the diet and exercise without getting a burn-out for the rest of my life and not let the diseases take over my life. On the other hand, Bariatric Surgery is promising with limited set of post surgery complications/risks. If I weigh the risks of not having surgery and having surgery done, on paper Surgery WINS hands down. I just need someone to tell me to go ahead with the surgery, so that I can focus on preparing myself. Thanks a lot...this advice will change my life and my family's.
  6. I am having surgery on Tuesday, the 29th, and I cannot stop eating....I know I shouldn't be eating but there are so many leftovers and cupcakes/candy in the house from the holidays.... I know what I need to do so this is more of a "what the hell is wrong with me" vent. My friend had the bypass a few weeks ago and I was doing good until she scared the crap outta me and said, " eat what you want, because you won't be able to afterwards". I have been a mess since. ????
  7. I know I can't expect everyone around the office to not eat anything I can't have but it's so hard! I'm 4 weeks post op gastric bypass so I'm on soft foods. I've been back to work a week and have had several crying sessions because I feel sorry for myself because I can't have that food. I'm learning a new way of thinking about food but my question is: Does anyone have a tips to surviving life in an office post op?
  8. Sasicas, I will never be ready to eat small amounts of food. I can never do it on my own. I will be having open surgery anyway, with them repairing my hernias, so as the surgeons said.....lets just do it once and for all and get it over with. I know I will be neurotic. It will be major, major for me, but I am at that point in life where I feel like im literally going to die and something needs to be done! I keep having hernias which get stuck, then winds up to be a bowel obstructions and they cant go in anymore. I have no muscle left holding anything together inside. If I have this surgery, and make it out alive, I will have no choice but to do it. Im not doing it any other way. Iit's very scary, as im sure we all experienced. My sister had the gastric bypass 5 yrs ago, and claims she is eating as she used to pre-op....so, I know its alllllll in the head, and I know there is no going back. I also know it didnt quite hit me totally yet!!! Anyway, thanks so much for sharing. You r so right in what ur saying, and I realize it has to be a 100 % commitment! Keep up the good work and thanks for all the thoughts and info

    Chewing Everything To Death!

Oh my....I don't like the sound of that. Like Beanie&Rosie'sMom, one of my principal reasons for doing the revision is to avoid all the "issues" with sliming/vomiting/gagging on the first bite.
  10. Hi, I've been through a band to sleeve conversion after an initial band and then a revision. My band removal and sleeve surgery were done 8 weeks apart. I had my sleeve surgery 6 weeks ago. The surgery went really well even though I had to have an unexpected second hiatal hernia repair. Apparently the surgery took longer than expected. I didn't have much in the way of gas pains. My pain meds worked well and I went home day 2. The recovery was more painful than I'd anticipated so I stayed on narcotics over 2 weeks. I'd heard sleeve surgery is easier than a gallbladder removal. I'd say it was the same as my gallbladder removal. More painful than band surgery, but I'm 18 years older now so that may have something to do with it. It was really hard to bend over for a while and then voila about 2 1/2 weeks in it got a lot better. sleeping was tough bc I'm a side sleeper and I had to sleep on my back for a while. I took four weeks off from work and I'm so glad I did because I needed the time to get my energy back. Now I'm feeling great and am SO happy to have made this change. It's such a different experience physically and emotionally. Good luck to you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Re-sleeve

hopefully someone to respond. When sleevers revise, it tends to be to bypass or DS (duodenal switch) - but I think I've read about some people re-sleeving. Hopefully someone on here has done it and will respond to this.

    Re-sleeve

Hi Nina, Although I'm from a Turkish background, I didn't have the courage to go overseas to get this surgery done bc if any complication arises the doctors here in Australia are hesitant about treating somebody else's mistake. So I just bit the bullet and decided to have it here in Australia, I've heard a lot of success stories from people who have had it in Turkey. It's good to hear yours whent well too! Hope everything works out for you in the long run, 🙏My surgery is tomorrow I have butterflies in my stomach nerves are flying high lol I'm hoping it goes well as I'm having a hiatal hernia repair and a gastric bypass. All the best to everyone🙏🙏

    Re-sleeve

i have never heard of someone getting resleeve. Its always bypass. So they are just making the sleeve again? your stomach stretched?
  14. Thank u wallflower. I believe that is true because everyone else sees it drastically and i just see it a little. I hit my 40 lb loss on the scales this morning was a big yay for me!! U have done fabulous girl!! That before and after pic is amazing transformation!! Woohoo! I cannot wait to be in ONEDERLAND! lol i actually had lapband 8 years ago and lost 100 lbs. Had it removed about 6 months ago due to the fact i had so much reflux issues that for 3 years i was basically deflated and it wasnt a tool for me anylonger. I gained 20 of that 100 back. So if i was to count all that loss id be at about 120 lbs lost too. But im basically just counting what ive lost w this whole gastric bypass... i still have about 120 to lose. But ur photo is inspiring to me. Thank u

    Possible Revision

I'm in the same situation as you are. I'm having a revision February 11th.
  17. Hi. I'm 7.5 months post Bypass and all the sudden I'm miserable. When I eat my stomach instantly bubbles and eventually my bowel starts cramping and I'm stuck on the toilet. If I'm constipated, I'm there until I'm cleared out and liquid diarrhea happens. If I'm not constipated it's just the liquid diarrhea. The catch is I've changed nothing! I'm eating the same foods I've always eaten since 8 weeks post. Low carb high protein. But this happens regardless of intake. It doesn't sound like the symptoms of developing an ulcer which I know can happen around this time. At first I thought maybe I just had a bug. But I'm moving onto the 2nd week of it and have no other symptoms. I eat. My bowels go into hyper drive and I after excruciating cramps I have liquid diarrhea. No new foods. Just new symptoms at almost 8 months post op. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on? I'm at the point now I can't leave the house confidently and I don't want to eat.
  18. My revision was a bit more... complicated than most. Due to unforseen issues (basically one anastomosis was not done right), the surgery in March had to be aborted after 3hrs. New surgery was scheduled for June to allow for healing. 2nd surgery, the surgeon discovered another surprise. My common channel was only 25cm and the configuration of my intestines was not the rny configuration. He had to back my common channel to 300cm, cut out a portion of my pouch and small intestines due to necrotic tissue. This surgery took 8hrs! So almost 9months post op, I do have better restriction than I did with my surgery 22 years ago, but I'm absorbing more. I'm down 50lbs so it's been slow going, but I'm still losing. Thanks for asking, Hope you are doing well on your journey.

    Cold Feet? Big Mistake?

I had lapband over 2 years ago. The only regret I had was that I didn't have it done earlier. Like most I am an expert at dieting and losing weight but couldn't keep it off. I have been at goal for awhile. Weight loss surgery is nothing to take lightly, it is a major surgery. Lap band has its advantages in that it is less invasive, can have fills to control amount of restriction thus either lose weight or maintain. It can be reversed if need be but do go into the surgery with the thoughts that it is a forever deal to have the band in you. Fills can be expensive if your insurance doesn't cover them but once you are at the sweet spot you generally don't have to get fills and if you do then it might be a tweak here and there. Unlike gastric bypass your body does absorb nutrients from the food you eat. You do lose at a slower rate than the gastric bypass but I do know of people from my group that have lost 150 to 200 lbs in the first year of lapband (that is the exception not the norm). I chose the lapband because I felt it to be a safer sugery but I do not look down on the gastric bypass. To me it is a personal decision that one must make to suit their lifestyle and needs. In the end it is all about losing weight to be healthier physically and emotionally.
  20. Carnie Wilson was just in the news for eating her way around the bypass snd now just got the Lapband. She talks about making choices in this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvWvQVOhfiw&feature=youtube_gdata_player
  21. Hi everyone, been searching the net for a while to find a forum so am pleased to have found you. am feeling very alone right now and would love to hear from anyone! I privately payed for my lap band , and am 6 weeks post surgery .... i payed £7,600 at BUPA - which is a well known uk private hospital .. a big ouch to my wallet . The op went well, the hospital was great. I managed the liquid diet for 1.5 weeks (i was asked to complete 4 weeks). I came off it having an egg sandwich which went down nicely (much to the horror of my surgeon). But was starving on watery Soup. I have felt no restriction what so ever and had my first band fill 2 days ago. I asked the doctor how much liquid he put in , he said 5 mls, and the band can take 10mls , but they dont fill it right up ever (bit of alien language for me really). So the moment i have been waiting for, for many years has been a huge let down!!! I dont feel at all restricted on what i can eat. I can eat the same amount as pre-op. Although i am forcing myself not to. I can drink as much Fluid as i like, downing a pint of Water is no problem. I feel so let down by everything. My hospital told me i would only be able to manage a cup full of food, and i would full up at the top of my body... i dont feel any of these things. only difference is a little more wind. If it wasnt for the fact that i saw the band on the xray machine at the 'fill' appointment and if i couldnt feel the port in my side when i bend over, i would never believe i have had surgery. I feel very alone and that my expensive surgery has been a failure and a waste of my life savings. Just want to give up and eat lots of food (which is sadly my life long way of dealing with stuff) I have just started self funding Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to help with that side of stuff, but my body just isn't feeling full as i was lead to believe it would. And will take a while i guess to sort out my head with my overeating. I have a BMI of 37 kilos - so not heavy enough for gastric bypass op, hence i chose the band. I am 5ft 7 and weigh 104 kgs, pre op i was 109 kgs. my weight loss has been due to the restrictive pre - op and post op diet .. nothing to do with the band at all. right now i feel like it has been an expensive waste of time. And i dont know anyone else who has had the procedure so cant ask their advice. i would be so grateful to hear if anyone has had a similiar experience, is there any light at the end of the tunnel ? should i demand more support, when and if will the hospital decide to do another band fill. I only get one more fill in with my package price of £7,800 so will have to pay for others. many thanks to you all.

    Waiting For Lap Band Surgery

Gastric bypass is the #1 choice for resolution of diabetes. Many patients have normal glucose levels within days of gastric bypass. Other types of bariatric surgery, like the band, can also improve diabetes, but that usually is the result of the weight loss, not the surgery itself. I have no idea if the bypass can reverse or stop the calcification in your pancreas - you need to talk to your doctor about that. One other thing (for now) to keep in mind is that with the band, weight loss may not start until months after surgery, when you've gotten enough fill in your band to help it do its job of reducing hunger and creating early and prolonged satiety. For that reason, if I were in your position, I would strongly consider a different surgical procedure. I loved my band, and it did wonders for my diabetes in the long run, but the benefit only persisted as long as I made good food choices and exercised. I can't help you with your support group questions because I'm not even sure where Brownsville and McAllen are. Are they in Texas? There are 2 ways you could research support groups in your area. One is to go to the Texas forum here on LBT and post a question about it there. The other is to call the hospital nearest to you and ask if they have or know of any WLS support groups in your area.

    What a nightmare !

Im not a bander I am at the first phase of GB but we all need support and after the ordeal that you are going through I couldn't imagine feeling good. We are here for you and wishing you a speedy recovery and what happens next??? Do you have the band replaced or go to a sleeve option or bypass?? I have read about the bands having to be removed before and then other procedures having to occur keep us updated xoxo
  24. I have Medica which is adminsitrated by United Healthcare, In fact the bariatric policy is United Healthcare's policy and Gastric sleeve is covered by UHC. No longer considered investigational. Ask to see a copy of their current policy, Do not take their word for it! I was originally told that the Sleeve was investigational and not covered. I pointed out the policy has been revised and offered to send them a copy of the one I found on their website. They were looking at an out of date policy!
  25. My husband had surgery about 3 and a half weeks ago and eats almost nothing. Says he just can't, nothing taste good, and says he just feels full. He eat about 3/4 of a yogurt for Breakfast and maybe a few more bites of it for lunch. That's its nothing else. He does drink lots of Water. Has anyone else had this happen? He's just very weak and has no desire to try and eat. I had bypass 4 months ago and felt nothing like that. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
