It could be little post surgical muscle spasms when you swallow. Everything is still a bit sensitive. It takes weeks to heal & recover. Make sure you’re sipping not gulping & leaving time between each sip. Cold drinks are often a culprit too so try room temperature liquids or warm/hot (many of us find warm more soothing). Eventually you may be able to drink larger amounts, closer together & drink cold again but when, how much & how often is an individual thing. Me, I can’t do more than two large mouthfuls in a row after all this time but others can chug. Just one of those things.

You won’t have messed up so you can breath about that. I do agree with the suggestion to check your portion size recommendations. Mine was 1/4 -1/3 cup to begin from purée. Liquids stage was just sip your shake or soup ‘meal’ until finished. Portion size of those were a cup of but I’d dilute them to double & would take a couple of hours to drink. All adds to your fluid goal so all good. If you weren’t given portion size recommendations, ask for some. Nerves are cut during surgery so your signals aren’t working & then they may not work the same which is one of the reasons portion control is important. Plus liquids go through your body more quickly so your tummy is emptying more quickly than you getting ‘full’. Even when your nerves have healed, you’ve recovered & are eating solid food, you may not feel full or feel your restriction. The actually goal should not be to eat until you are full or feel the restriction but eat until you’ve had enough. Three years out I still ask myself do I need the next bite or just want it. Big difference. I still eat slowly too: 30-60mins depending upon what I’m eating (of course I’m eating more then you are at the moment). It takes me about 50mins to eat a 6oz/1cup yoghurt. But surgeons have different recommendations on time frame & you’ll discover what works best for you. I still also take small bites. A teaspoon helps to modify the size of your bite & keep them small. Then, put your spoon down between bites & wait a couple of minutes before your next bite. There are a lot of new things to learn but you’ll get there. Also what worked for your brother may not work for you. All the best.

What sort of changes are you referring to? Dietary, taste, constipation/diarrhoea, tiredness, activity, recovery, food intolerances, stalls, hair loss, etc.?? It’s good to be aware of possibilities but you can’t predict what will happen to you. Generally a lot of things that change are temporary or are easy to modify your behaviours to manage the changes. Some may be frustrating or require support from your medical team & dietician. Some changes will become permanent like dietary choices, activity, etc. Don’t let fear hold you back. The benefits are amazing.

Your BP is often higher when you see the doctor. Apparently they attribute it to a conscious or subconscious stress reaction. 🤷🏻♀️ I started keeping a record of my at home BP readings to show my GP but then forgot to take it 🙄. My readings are usually 15-20 points higher at the surgery than at home. Funny thing is I’ve been seeing her for more than 20yrs, taught her daughter, she’s very supportive & we get on really well but my BP still goes up. I blame the traffic I have to battle to get to the appointment. 😁 And yes your BP will be up & down at home too depending upon what you’ve been doing, time of day, if your hydrated, etc. I always record the time & add what I’ve been doing against the reading. Sometimes it’s helpful to take it at the same time three times a day. Congrats to everyone who have been able to reduce or drop their meds. 🎉

4 months out and stalled all month!
fourmonthspreop replied to DonnaGS's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I seem to be in a cycle of losing and gaining the same 3 lbs. I keep going in between 250 and 248. I am also about 4 months post op. Is a 4 month stall normal? I thought I broke 250 but it goes in between those 3 numbers probably for 3 weeks now I think or more idk... I'm going to be honest I'm not meeting my protein goals or hydration goals. Trying very hard with water but protein I am.not getting enough. I am still in a major calorie deficit and started vigorous exercise recently. I'm frustrated but all I can do is stay off the scale, stay in my deficit and keep working to reach my protein and water goal. Uhh but it is the most frustrating thing ever. I want to get to 200 so badly. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app -

Hi surgery twin! I had my surgery the same day and finally advanced to full liquids from clear liquids this week. I feel a little more human but I am having those cravings as well! My dr’s plan has me able to eat peanut butter next week, I hope you are able to have some soon too! -

What I learned on this forum. Everyone has their own experience. You will have your own. I don’t think anyone is alike at all. My surgery took forever. My family was seriously worry. It started at 130pm and got to recovery at 830pm. I stayed In the hospital for 3 days. My doctor came and saw me. I was very well taken care of. I arrived to the hospital like 1030am. Surgery was scheduled at 12pm. I arrived and had to register and check in. Then they had me strip naked and wear hospital robe and put all my stuff away. Struggle at the hospital is making that first urination. I just couldn’t urine laying in bed. I had to use the bathroom. Once I did I was up every 2 hours using the bathroom. I had bunch of machines on me. So it was annoying. Being home so far is putting eating a drinking in order and I’m schedule. I’m still struggling with it. I took two weeks off and I will than be working from home for a month. I will be going into the office afterwards. I packed my phone charger and a change of comfy clothes. Loose clothing you want nothing tight on when u leave to go home. Hope this helps but again you will have your own story and experience best of luck. -
Food Before and After Photos

Tofu scramble! Half a block of tofu , mixed frozen veggies, frozen green beans, nutritional yeast, and I will throw a handful of fresh spinach in before I warm it up for breakfast. This will be three meals worth for me. I love this breakfast! I may also throw a few slices of avocado on top tomorrow.😀 -

I am Definitely curious about labs for those who use the patches. My Team recommended the patches, I am only 2 weeks post opp tomorrow so labs will be in another 2.5 months.

thank you! I knew you would understand being your Hashimoto's struggle. I literally can't "stomach" the taste of water additives. I'm not a picky person at all so its super frustrating when everything makes you gag. I can get about 2 sips of a protein shake and less of protein water but this too shall pass so just doing the best I can and drinking water with lemon with SO MUCH ice lol its literally the only thing I can drink, and it has to be that way. I'm really trying to drink more than my current 2 - 3 glasses a day - it's an all-day struggle. I may get another myers IV bag next week but really hoping to no have too as its not cheap. -
This is such a helpful thread. When I was in the hospital (2 weeks ago) my bp was 188/96. I’ve taken meds since my twins were born 21 years ago and my bp went up but never came down. I take 2 meds. They discontinued the med with the diuretic the day after surgery because obviously they are trying to prevent dehydration. I was instructed to purchase a blood pressure monitor and keep track of my bp when I went home, and to let my PCP know when I saw it drop so that my dosage could be changed. Since yesterday, I have been extremely fatigued after feeling like the energizer bunny since surgery. My bp was 126/79……😳 Same today and still tired. I see my PCP tomorrow morning at 8:30. My pcp did tell me in April that she and my surgeon were communicating about my bp and the fact that my meds would be getting adjusted. I am so thrilled about this! 🤗

First Post-Op Dr Visit
Rettak64 replied to Rettak64's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ya I'm thinking thats what I'm gonna need to do too. Just weigh in at the doctor's office. With my husband having surgery on Monday, I'll be back in the office on 2 weeks with him anyway so I can weigh myself then. I can't continue to stress how much I'm loosing because I'll just hinder my progress. -

That's AWESOME! I'll be happy when I'm under 300. It's my goal to reach 250-ish by the end of the year, so we will see how that works out. I'll be happy if I get close! I'm sorry to hear about your protein/water intake problem. Yes, dehydration will cause your body to reject other things until it's properly hydrated. Have you asked about the possibility of using something like IV Hydrates in your water? After passing out in Legoland, my husband would put that in my water and I didn't have much of an issue with dehydration after that. I usually have Weigh-In Wednesdays, but some Sundays I sneak a peak, especially if I feel bloated or haven't had a proper BM, but that's happening less and less now, especially since I don't want to get discouraged and weight fluctuates throughout the week. I can't imagine living with fibromyalgia. I'm glad this gives you some relief from the exhaustion and brain fog, I'm relieved to experience the same. -

I was on metformin at one time, but it made me violently sick and passed out several times while on it, so I'll never agree to be put on it again. It also caused an issue with my pancreas (already had an issue, but it enflamed it?) I can't do keto/low carb because I literally stop losing weight, but my diet is mostly protein/veg with a little bit of sweet potato or a couple of tbsp of quinoa or brown jasmine rice, depends on the meal. I've noticed the 2 weeks I was below 35g carbs after surgery I not only had issues with low blood sugar, but I also didn't lose any weight during that time. I was low carb for years and never lost weight, no one can really explain why since my blood work does show insulin resistance. I don't take any medicine for hashimotos. Many people with hashimotos thyroiditis get put on thyroid medicine. I was on Leothyronine (NP thyroid did not work for me, caused major weight gain), but since surgery we've done the labs 3xs and my provider said not to take it and we will re-test in 90 days unless my weight loss stops completely. Hopefully that means I won't need it at all in the future. I'm still AIP-ish in eating, which is what helps the most with hashis symptoms. Luckily, eggs don't cause a flareup and most fermented dairy doesn't either. However, milk-based products and casein does. -

Hi Rachel and Jen!! My mini gastric bypass was 4/14. I have lost less than you both. I have not been able to get anywhere near my protein and water intake, I have a HUGE aversion to protein since week 6. I did my surgery in Mexico so I don't have any local support at this point but my surgeon advises he thinks I'm very dehydrated causing my inability to handle eating. I went and got a Myers IV bag last week and i feel like it has helped a bit, My starting weight was 242 and hit onederland Monday!!! I only weigh once a week and was at 199.8 this past Monday. You both are doing so amazing!!! I have fibromyalgia and this has helped with my brain fog and exhaustion for sure. I am not working out yet at direction from my surgeon until my fluids and protein are under control. I still get very light headed and dizzy everyday. -

We went to a baseball game this past week, and I easily fit into the stadium seat. Pretty certain that wouldn't have been the case 108 lbs ago. Also, we decided to avoid the elevators and walk to our parking level, and I was NOT slowing the group down for once. -
Had my 1st post-op visit today...my scale says I've lost 13 lbs...Dr scale says I've lost 7...6 lb difference!!! WTF!!! Dr says I should only be weighing myself once a week and that I'm doing fine. But I thought for sure the weight would come off a little faster. Sticking with soft foods until next appointment on July 20th. Hopefully I'll see a better loss then. My husband goes in on Monday for his surgery so at least we will both be on the same diet. Sent from my SM-G981V using BariatricPal mobile app

I had surgery 8 weeks ago. Weight loss will vary depending on how much you weighed to start with. I’ve lost 31-33 lbs since surgery day and 39 lbs including pre-op, however I was a lot smaller to start with so % wise I’m right where I need to be. Your body will keep losing until you hit your BMR plus activity calories to maintain your weight. We just have to remember we have the rest of our lives and to enjoy this awesome ride! Congrats on your weight loss so far. I know there’s more to come! 🥳 Queso -

Same! It's OK, even though I'm not where I thought I'd be, I'm happy to be losing consistently and not gaining it! I'm sorry you're experiencing so much nausea, I usually don't get nauseated unless I'm really about to vomit. Have you spoken with your doctor about trying Zofran to help with the nausea? My eating is OK. I struggle a lot, it seems many things make me vomit or can't be tolerated. I make sure to chew very, very well and to make sure not to overeat ever. Usually eat a 4-6 oz meal over an hour or 90 minutes to make sure I don't overdo it. If using portion cups, I have between 1/2c and 3/4c of food, depending on what I'm eating. When it's 000 Vanilla yogurt + blueberries I do the 1/2c yogurt and 1/4c blueberries, but normal meals with protein/veg are just 1/2c (4oz). I can finally get all of my protein and most of the water in everyday. I'm not quite to 64oz, but most days I'm really close. It's difficult to drink that much fluid throughout the day because I'm on the phone all day at work, so the time I have to down water is limited to before taking calls, on breaks, and after work (7pm at night). I walk, I swim, or I jump on the elliptical for a few minutes if it's raining and I can't walk. I've tried working out with resistance bands, but just a few sets into a workout, I feel like I'm going to pass out. I'm having about 750 calories a day most days, sometimes less if I ate something that made me vomit that day because for the rest of the day I can only have liquid because my stomach is unforgiving. I actually did pass out a couple weeks ago, apparently. We took our daughter to Legoland and I thought I had been drinking enough and forgot to eat (breakfast at 9am, but should've had protein or snack by 12pm and didn't). I don't remember what happened, but I woke up in the medical facility being cared for, they said I passed out and needed to be hydrated ASAP. They gave me 2 gatorade popsicles and made me drink my protein shake (premier protein carton my husband gave to them) and eventually I was feeling better and caught up with the family to continue our vacation. Truth is, I have hashimotos and because of the restrictions in eating, I feel 1000xs better. Free from the fatigue and the brain fog, I can finally reach my toes again, and I'm all around feeling better than I did at 421lbs (or the 381 I was at on the day of surgery). I really hope that you find it easier to be consistent. Sometimes setting hard boundaries are needed when you have a set day/time/times that you decide to walk/exercise. My daughter is 12 and a good helper, she reminds me every morning about our walks together OR getting on the elliptical and we go swimming every Saturday, sometimes Thursday or Sunday too, depending on how I feel. I don't stress the exercise as much right now because I'm consistent enough that when I take a day to rest, I'm not upsetting anything. My doctor asked me to start working up to eating 1000 calories a day by my 3 month post op, but I don't think that's going to happen. At 750 I feel full all day long and can hardly eat more and I don't eat fats in my food unless I have olives or avocado because I can't process it very well. But alas, we are all different. I've seen many stating how they feel great and can eat pretty much anything with no issues and I'm happy that they can. I'm hoping to grow up and be like them someday, LOL. Unfortunately, that's not my story for now. -

Yes its the worst. After four or five days you will feel less hungry and just knuckle down and get on with it. I had three weeks. I just could not wait for it to end it is so boring. It felt like some cruel game some Doctor had conjured up just to make their day better. The diets are so random from doctor to doctor

Getting closer… timeline question
LookingForward22 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yesterday I had the last of my appointments, tests and virtual check-ins (or so I thought). I got a call after my last appointment - expecting it to be a scheduler to set up a time to meet with the surgeon. Instead, it was a question about my cardiac clearance - “did they do an echo while I was there?” (they didn’t). They said I would need one - sorry it got missed (irritated it’s another copay 🙄) … hoping they could get me in before my new insurance year (July 1st) but grateful they got me in on July 1st. At least it is not a long wait. I’m worried that’s going to push out my meeting with the surgeon… and back things up a little. I know I will have a 8 day pre-surgical liquid diet to do prior to my surgery…. but my question is - how long after your last meeting with the surgeon was your surgery scheduled for? My husband is a teacher and I’m hoping to have the surgery before he goes back so he can be around that first week or two at least. As June turns into July… (he goes back mid August for in-service) I worry that might not be possible. I’m not worried about the insurance part, I’m confident that is already good. I’m not worried about the echo (I have no cardiac issues… it’s just the programs requirement). So it’s really just the surgeons availability that’s the last piece of the puzzle. Thanks for any insight you can give. I’m trying not to stress - but the closer I get to the pre-surgical requirements being done … the more anxious I get. -

Good afternoon, I'm officially 10 weeks post op after VSG. I've only lost 48 lbs, but I'm feeling SO much better than before. Just curious for anyone who's been out of surgery around the same time (my date was April 13th) and what you've lost during this time. I'm not worried about not losing more because 48lbs in 10 weeks is still a great amount to have lost, but my surgeon said I would've lost between 50-60 lbs by 8 weeks out, on average. Weight loss is consistent now, I didn't lose anything for about 3+ weeks after week 3 while I was healing, but now it's consistently about 3-4 lbs down every week. I've also found it helpful to include at least 2 tbsp a day of some type of grain or starch (nothing processed/white/wheat). When I stay lower in carbs (below 35), I don't lose weight at all for that week. -
Ugggg, I forgot how much the preop diet sucks. I'm being revised from a lapband to gastric bypass on July 6. My band has been unfilled since December, so I've been able to eat normally since then. My current surgeon has me doing two weeks of shake for breakfast, shake for lunch, healthy choice steamer for dinner. Last time I did all liquids, staying under 20 grams of carbs, but it was only for a week. From what I remember, the first days of the preop diet are the worst and then I kinda got numb and it wasn't so bad. But I'm in the thick of it now. And staring down two full week of this is daunting. I made it last time, I'll make it this time, but just uggg.
