  1. You've gotten great advice so far and I don't have any practical advice to add. I would like to say, enjoy the process as much as you can. I know it sounds weird but when I had my sleeve surgery 7 years ago I rushed things and kept thinking about the next step. For my revision to bypass on Tuesday the 1st, I treated myself to new pajama pants to take to the hospital, I bought exciting flavors of protein shakes. My backpack is going to be light... Phone, long charging cord, lip balm, my noise cancelling headphones to help block out some of the hospital noises, my 3 ring binder of surgery info, pajama pants and not much else. I've had 2 endoscopies and another unrelated procedure in the past few months and I did much better with letting myself relax. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

    Endoscopy and Sleeve?

I had an endoscopy yesterday as part of the pre-surgery process for me. I've had GERD issues for a while, and my nurse wanted to make sure there wasn't something more there going on before getting a sleeve (which was the surgeon's recommendation based on my weight). Turns out I have a medium-sized hiatal hernia of the paraoesophageal type. Based on this we're actually going to go with bypass. According to the nurse, while it's possible the GERD would go away with the sleeve if the hernia was fixed, it's also not entirely uncommon for sleeve users to get another hernia later on due to the reduced size of the stomach, and then we'd be back to square 1 with the GERD issues (with them possibly being worse due to the new stomach). Where I am self-pay and a revision would not be covered by insurance, we have decided to go with bypass instead as I essentially have one chance to get this right. That is just for me though, and everyone is so different with multiple other factors at play that it may not be the right choice for others. Either way, I'd say an endoscopy will likely be beneficial. Doesn't hurt to have more information going into such a big decision, and the results may help you decide what type of surgery would work best for you.

    Endoscopy and Sleeve?

I wouldn't do the lapband at all, and I'm surprised your surgeon still does them. Few surgeons do those anymore and lots of people have had theirs removed because of complications. if you have GERD, just know that it gets worse for about 30% of sleeve patients. You may be OK with that amount of risk - I was not, so I went with bypass. Bypass usually (but not always) improves if not outright cures GERD. Having GERD won't prohibit you from getting the sleeve, though - but just know your risk if you do have it and you decide to proceed with the sleeve. Sometimes it can be medically managed, but we do see a fair amount of revisions to bypass on here if the GERD gets really severe (and again, that doesn't happen to most people - but it does happen to some..) P.S. Malabsorption issues aren't common with bypass AS LONG AS people are consistent about taking their vitamins. There are some people who can't absorb iron very well from oral supplements, so they need to go in for occasional infusions, but most of us absorb iron from pills just fine. As far as other nutrients, again, as long as you keep on top of your vitamin regimen, problems are rare.

US vs Mexico sleeve size ?

That is me. I'm three years out and was pretty solid until last year where I've now gained and feel very little Restriction. I'm considering a revision
  5. Hi all, I had VSG back in 2014, and have been good. I developed bad GERD and am converting to bypass on October 1st. Does anyone have experience with this type of surgery? I would like to lose my remaining weight too, but don’t know how much a conversation will actually help you lose. Not having regurgitation will be with all of it though!!
  6. Did you also gain some of the weight back? Don’t you have to be a certain size to qualify for revision? Especially with insurance? I mean will a dr do it even for gerd if you are near a healthy BMI?

    Yaaaaaaay vsg!

I have lost 54 lbs since my lap band a year ago and revision 3 months ago, it doesnt seem like alot for a year but I equate that to (5) 10 lb bags of potatoes + almost a 5 lb bag. I cant even imagine carrying that around all day long every day. No wonder it was much easier to climb the steps at the theatre last weekend. I am not losing as much as some people after the VSG (only 27 lbs at almost 3 months) but its not a gain and its so gradual, I dont have to come up with an excuse for all the weight loss since no one at work knows about the WLS.
  8. I have 5 kids, ages 10,9,4,2&1, the help from my mom and dad while my husband was working was wonderful. I was exhausted and had to focus on getting Water in, my kids needed more attention then I could give for the first week home. I didn't need help taking care of me, just my brood Revision 1/31/13 by Dr Cabrera and Venezuela in MX

    Looking for Texas Sleevers???

Howdy! I had my LapBand done in Conroe by Dr. Collier in 2007. He has since retired and I have been picked up by Dr. Turnquest. I am awaiting approval for revision to VSG, but it looks good. I've had major complications concluding in 2 hospitalizations. I had a very successful band until I got pregnant and had to unfill. It was never the same again. I'm ready for normalcy, if that is possible. Are there any local groups in North Houston?

Here's my unusual story as to why I'm here

I wish I could have had the revision the same day and I wouldn't have gained 75lbs waiting to heal and be sleeved. You're lucky! I was too sick to have it the same day.. Or even same year. I am now sleeved and couldn't be happier Good luck!

HELP! Pre-op, Almost at Finish Line... Thoughts of Bailing

This does make sense. I'm now on my last day of the pre-op. Tomorrow I drink some sugary drinks and clear liquid. The sugary drinks are supposed to kick you out of ketosis. It's weird now today I was just trying to enjoy my protein drinks as a "last meal" since tomorrow it's changing again. I'm still pretty nervous. Re-reading this post. Trying to focus on the good stuff. Still wondering what I'm thinking with the stomach removal, though. Worries are mostly about my new insides and that I don't want to end up with a revision. I don't have to worry about a revision if I don't have the surgery.
  12. I had the sleeve because I have bipolar disorder and was concerned about the absorption of medication with the bypass. The dr said he recommended the sleeve because of my lower BMI but would do bypass if I wanted it. The NP said she would go with sleeve because it’s the safer choice in terms of my medications. I did not lose as much weight as I had hoped to. In all fairness the NP did warn me that sometimes with Bipolar disorder that people do not lose quite as much as those without it but I only got down to 25.7 BMI which is still technically overweight and then I gained the bounce back weight. I sometimes wonder if I had just chosen the bypass if I would have lost more and had a little easier time keeping it off. The only thing is, who is to say that I wouldn’t be one of the people who lost less with bypass as well. What if it’s not the surgery choice at all. Don’t get me wrong. I am still happy to have lost what I did lose and if I can maintain this I will be happy enough. I just don’t have much wiggle room and do wonder if I had chosen bypass if it would be different. I think it’s only human to wonder if the grass would’ve been greener on the other side. You definitely do still have time to change your mind though. They told me I was in no rush to decide all along. If I had more time to research one question I would have asked is if their patients that revised sleeve to bypass lost more after the bypass (got to a lesser weight than they had with the sleeve). I know that doesn’t 100% mean people who get bypass first will lose more than they would have with sleeve but it seems like it would be the case. They are both excellent and relatively safe options so I don’t think there is a wrong choice really. My only real advice would be to take your time until you feel confident in your choice and don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions until you are.

I've Got Questions, You've Got Answers

Honestly...my answer for anyone that is willing to keep a too tight band, is make sure you are always in close proximity to your surgeons office, good insurance and money IF needed for emergency surgery or band replacement. If you can eat steak, and can keep it down, you may not be too tight, I'd give it a few days, but again, most people who THINK they are too tight probably are. Also, it takes time to get used to a very tight band, you may want to take tiny bites, and only eat moist food for a while to determine how tight your band really is. Sometimes it's a fine line between Red and Green zones, the warning signs to look for is chest and throat discomfort, frequent vomiting and reflux regardless of how small your bites are and reflux at night regardless of how close to bedtime you eat. My band is 'tight' green zone, I can eat all solids --but I have to be careful, and I can't eat no more than a few ounces per meal and I don't have to get up a slime and vomit at every meal. I went to Red Lobster yesterday for lunch and ate fish, green Beans and a few potatoes....I did not finish my fish, beans or potatoes and when home with take out box...before I ate I drank some hot tea to allow me to eat a very tiny meal -- to ME, this is what restriction is supposed to be without slimming and vomiting at every meal AND able to still lose and maintain my weight. I've had many friends over the years never could eat solids because they maintained their bands too tight, they got skinny and ALL have lost their bands and revised to the Sleeve at this point, I never question how tight they keep their bands because it was THEIR business. Remember there is no advantage for being too tight. This is one of those questions based on how tight someone is willing to keep their bands, everyone keeps their bands at different levels so you may get "varied" opinions on this boards.... I've been at ALL levels and I know what the consequences are long term....
  14. I have a friend who just had the sleeve as well as her younger daughter. They both have about 150 at LEAST to lose and they are first time WLS.They needed to do something.Great Losing weight ...ok.She told me she made some mistakes by waiting to long to eat on several occasions....ok I see in the future where this is going.I have a lap band...I thought it was less invasive back in 2004.Fast forward...I slime and vomit all the time.My port site protrudes and is painful and I Abe GERD and my esophagus has damage...did I mention I have struggled initially lost a minimal amount of weight ..50 pounds when I needed to lose 100.,,I am now an involuntary bulimic because of the band and its complications...trying hard to get a revision to the RNY

    History of blood clots

I also have the MTHFR mutation. I had revision surgery on 10/18/16 and had to use Lovenox shots for 14 days after surgery. My hematologist was on board with the surgery. He felt that I would be better off to have surgery than carry all the extra weight. Since MTHFR can cause an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes, it was a reasonable decision. 16. I had a band to sleeve revision May 17, following a second hiatal hernia (first hernia repair Dec. 2015). When I consume liquids, I can feel the liquids hit my stomach, which results in pain that is nearly intolerable, even with pain meds. Has anyone else experienced this? And, if so, how long did it last? History: Band installed May 2003 - gained 25 lb Diagnosed port leak June 2005 Port replacement 2005 - lost 160 lb Band drained for pregnancy - gained 90 lb Port replacement 2010 - lost 60 lb Band drained for pregnancy - gained 50 lb Sept 2012 - Feb 2015 - lost 50 lb Band drained Sept 2015 due to massive reflux Dec 2015 diagnosed with hiatal hernia & repaired same month Band filled March 2016 Bad hiccup April 2016 - confirmed hiatal hernia
  17. I had a revision on May 17 2016, also from band to sleeve. I can drink fluids but I have to do it slow (like a turtle), so I'm doing it every hr almost, to get fluids in. Can you try that method.? We both are only 5 days postop, and everyone says it will take time. Hope you feel better!

    Any DS or Loop/SADI patients?

Hi!!! I am not a revision, I am 5 weeks out and I've lost 38 lbs total. I had 3 comorbidities... Diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I also have Rheumatoid arthritis. All are resolved, no insulin or pills. I am so happy about that. I am in Burlington NC. My surgeon was Dr Jon Michael Bruce at Bariatric Specialists of NC. I do not regret my decision at all. I hope this helps you. Best of luck on your journey!!! [emoji1] Sent from my SM-G930VL using BariatricPal mobile app

    January 2014 Sleevers

Hello fellow January sleevers, I'm having a band-revision down January 27 at OCC with Dr. Ariel Ortiz. Getting pretty excited as it's only 3 weeks away.

    My Good News!

Oh man Well if the stitches on your port gave way, I don't think you'd feel a difference up in your chest where your band is placed. The results from the x-ray were normal? How much of a fill do you have? By you saying you can eat less and less, I'm thinking you need an un-fill, but I'd assume your surgeon would have done this automatically when you told him that you were so uncomfortable. I'm sorry you're so miserable If I were you I'd also be looking into a revision. What good is weight loss if you're constantly in pain and miserable?

    Any DS or Loop/SADI patients?

    Let's Talk About Hair Loss

I told my hairdresser that I wanted to go back to my natural color(s)--mostly grey--because post-op from my DS I'd lose hair. She disagreed...said it's an urban legend. I went for my DS..and SHE went for a revision on breast reconstruction (cancer survivor). We BOTH lost hair and now she's a believer. (I also had hair fallout with my band and my abdominoplasty and the breast reduction. But way more with the DS because of the malabsorption post-op.) (I've just started taking Biotin and folic acid because the only time in my life I had decent nails was when I was on prenatal Vitamins. I asked my DS surgeon--a new daddy, so he's up on these things--what was in them that wasn't in the regular vitamins and he said biotin and folate. I'll let you know if it works.)
  25. Hello! New to this site on the gastric bypass side anyway... I was a previous member before and during the golden days of the lapband. The golden days are over, I am so ready to get the band out... It seems there were different stages of life with the band in the past few years, that I thought were bad and seemed to get more uncomfortable. The more horror stories I hear the more I realize this thing is crap and should be taken off the market. I started the process to get band removed and revised to bypass in Oct 2013, Met all the requirements and wasn't approved by psych, did therapy and it helped, then as a military family we moved and had to start the process all over again. So I finally have a surgery date August 12!! I received the insurance approval on Friday !! Whoot! Whoot!! I am so excited, as well as a little nervous. I know several bypass patients who have been very successful for 10, 15 and 20 years... I am ready to live a healthy life forever. I am in the process of buying my Vitamins and trying really hard to do the modified pre op diet until next week and then I will start the pre op diet. Which consists of lean meat and veggies, and 1 fruit a day. Which is too far out from what I am doing already. Although I am super excited these are my concerns, was wondering if yall have had any of the same concerns. I told my boss I was having surgery, didn't mention what type he's a doctor and didn't want to go into details, and judgment of the lapband. But I feel like I should tell in case their are complications. I am scared to death, I will wake up with the band removed and the bypass not completed. And last surgery is on the 12, and I have to be back to work the 24th. I work in a small practice and there is no one to cover for me if I need more time. Thanks to everyone and cheers to getting the band removed and starting a new life!!
