Why Do We Lose Our Hair?

I am 19 weeks out from surgery -- I started the hair loss at the 16 week mark. My hair is fine, thin and I have eczema. In preparation for the inevitable, I have taken Biotin, hair/nails Vitamins, NuHair leave in serum nightly, and used Nioxin shampoo/conditioner since about 2 months prior to surgery. I knew these wouldn't prevent the trauma reaction from surgery, but I still needed to be proactive in some way. For those with thin/fine hair -- I don't lose my hair in "clumps" or "handfuls" because my thin/fine hair doesn't know what a "clump" is. I lose my hair in strands and I see them in my comb/brush every day or feel them in my fingers when washing my hair. It seems to be focused on the crown and I actually started doing the "comb over" technique which made me SO PROUD. Last week I went to my stylist who cut my hair short and in layers and I swear my hair feels healthier and is not falling out as drastically. I HIGHLY recommend seeing a stylist soon after the hair begins to transition. This week I have enjoyed the multitude of compliments on my new hair style. It is all part of the process and I hope my hair begins to regenerate at some point, but I think I will just continue to make more frequent trips to see my hairstylist to keep the illusion that my hair is as healthy as my body is becoming.

    Some good news

10 wks. 40 lbs. I'm not gonna lie, it's a big lifestyle change, but still happy I did it. My life just doesn't revolve around food anymore. I no longer live to eat. I eat to live! You'll do great!
  3. I am 31 years old and have basically done whatever I wanted (within reason) whenever I wanted since mid-college. I'm self-employed in the financial industry so I have been able to take off on a vacation, golf, or whatever reasonably easy (since I didn't have to ask my employer first.) This do whatever, whenever is partly why I'm in the shape I'm in, I love to eat... and eat good. One of the things that I'm most worried about is the possibility that I won't be able to drink carbonated beverages such as beer or things that mix with alcohol after surgery. I'm not an alcoholic by any means, but, I have a lot of fun. And drinking on the golf course or during a cocktail hour in business settings has been a big part of my life over the past 10 years. Not to mention, most of my friends like to kick back and drink on the weekends. I'm confused because I have read many things that a lot of folks aren't able to handle alcohol or drink carbonated beverages at all... Yet, I have a good friend who had the surgery and in some ways, I wouldn't hardly notice a difference in his eating/drinking unless he had told me. He still drinks a few beers, drinks a ton of wine, and some mixes and seems to be fine. The main area I can see a difference is that he seems to get drunker quicker. What are your experiences? What is the norm? Is it just that this surgery affects everyone differently? I mean, I am obviously willing to give up some of this for my health for my family... But, I'm just trying to figure out what to expect. Any input is appreciated. Oh, and my surgery is scheduled for this coming Monday. Thanks.

    Start again.

The band is working well for me. I am losing about 2 to 2.5 pounds a week so around 10 pounds a month. I need to work on exercise. I sit at a computer all day and come home and sit some more. Today I told hubby I'm going to exercise no matter what. Regarding my eating I limit bread and steak which doesn't agree with my band. Everything else I eat small portions of. I track using My Fitness Pal. I'm working hard to be consistent with my healthy eating. Thanks for asking. I hope you are doing well. Lap-banded and love it!
  5. Welcome if you need a friend I'm here. I personally had the bypass but I needed to lose 150lbs and I have done that. Being 19 though you have to be mentally prepared for a huge change in your life where most of your friends are probably going out every weekend and socialising you'll not be as social you'll need to commit to this change of lifestyle totally to be successful and not let temptation take over. It is a good decision but a big decision I choose RNY BYPASS personally because I needed more than just sleeve and wanted better long term success as well.. The sleeve is fine if you only need to lose a smaller amount but there is chance of reflux issues and then needing a bypass anyway. Tell us more about yourself and what surgery you are thinking of and what research you have done???
  6. Thanks! The 10's are tight, but I was quite excited to get into them. My goal is to be a 6. I have about 33 more pounds and I'm thinking I should be there.
  7. Way to go Mudbug!! I too was size 20/22 prior to surgery and am wearing size 16 now. Size 10 is WHERE I want to BE!! Next dr. appt is May 21; not certain about fill yet. Still having some problems w/food getting stuck & PBing. Not daily but maybe once a week or so. I think it is because I have gotten hungry & when I do eat I am eating too fast/not chewing good enough. We'll see what happens between now & May 21. Again.....size 10 is awesome!
  8. :kiss:Hi everyone, My journey begins this Thursday @ 2:30 in the afternoon. I will be banded that day. I have tons and tons of questions to ask my Doctor tomorrow at the pre op visit. My doctor is Dr. A Joe Cribbens. My son had the same surgery this last March and has lost 69 lbs. He is a new person. Dr. Cribbens is the greatest. I waited three months before Dr. Cribbens would even file insurance on me. After the initial approval everything has moved quickly. Now I am nervous. I know how my son ate and he did great. I just hope I can do the same. He is a great support for me. My only fear besides not being able to eat is that I won't be able to play tennis in two weeks. All I read in the posts is that you hurt after the surgery. Can anyone tell me what it feels like? Does the pain go away? I only have my son to go on but he is 19 years old and I am 57. There is a big difference between us. However, I do think very young and play a mean game of tennis. I look forward to hearing from all of you. Skinnydeb:wub::teeth_smile:
  9. Banded on 10/24 and no restriction. First fill on Dec. 1st. Turkey for sure a 1/3 cup of mashed potatoes 1/3 cup of stuffing veggie one roll, not a butter fan, so all good there. I'm sure later I'll have one piece of SF chocolate pudding pie.
  10. Thank you everyone for your comments and support. I happen to be an honest person and don't like to hide things especially from friends. But it's weird that I get praised from friends I've acquired over the last 10 years and a person I know for over 25 yrs and I'm the godfather to his daughter would make a comment like that. But I agree, his comment had nothing to do with me and was more to make himself feel better. Unfortunately a person can live in the gym but if you don't eat right you'll play the up and down weight game for the rest of your life. Much love.

I’m 52 (so a bit younger but not too much). I had surgery on 10/10 and my only issues were nausea and heartburn for 4-5 days. Other than that I was fine. I walked the halls in the hospital (slowly at first) with little to no pain and by 1 week I was moving like I did pre-surgery. Good luck!!

    I got sleeved May 15,2014

Keeping in touch sounds great to me as well! It's nice to know how others are progressing to gauge my own progress! The Isopure drink (at health good stores) is not bad at all. I have only tried grape and got 10 oz of it in today so that = 20 grams protein.

Did Dr.Suh make you loose 10% of your initial weight and how long was the liquid diet? Congratulations on your weight loss....I just got referred to him so just curious...thanks
  14. Thank ALL so much for your comments. You have really helped me put my mind at ease. Apparently my ins/Dr only requires 1 vist to the Nut. My first call the only appt avialible was Sept 25th! Almost a month out. Called the second person on the list who doesn't work with my ins co and they got me on this Wednesday! $95 out of pocket but I willing to pay the money not to have to wait a month. I worked with a nut (doesnt support WLS) before and my eating habits have improved dramatically over the last 10 years, I've no problem maintaining and just can't seem to lose so here I am with sleave. Thanks agian to everyone.

    One week to go....

It's totally normal to be scared and worried! I totally was when I had my revision on December 10--and I'm 63 years old, so I was afraid that would complicate things as well. Thankfully, everything went well--a little damage to my stomach from the band so my pouch is a bit larger than the surgeon wanted it to be, but, other than that, everything went well. I'm six weeks out and still figuring our how to eat correctly and how to get in 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz. of Water every day. Believe me, it's a huge challenge. It definitely is a learning process! Good luck to you. If you are like me, after the surgery you'll wonder what all the fuss was about.
  16. Wow, with a family history like that, I'd say banding is a really good investment in your health and quality of life. It IS hard. You dont get banded and then automatically lose weight for very long as you'll quickly work out a way to get calories in if you really want to. Look, you have to WANT to change. You have to be willing to do what you would always have had to do to lose weight, only the band will help you to be a lot less hungry. But its a tough journey, and losing 100lb in a year doesnt always happen, it took me 2 years to lose that much. Any weight loss at all, even 10% of your body weight can do marvellous things for your health, so I'd suggest to not be so fixated on a goal like that, Exercise helps enormously too. What do I eat in a day and what are my portion sizes?. I dont measure to be honest, early in the day I can eat probably a cup worth of food, late in the day its 1/2 cup as I tend to be tighter at night. I eat all foods, I dont avoid carbs, but I dont eat a lot of white sugary carbs. I try to avoid too many processed foods, preferring fresh, I have the occasional glass of wine, a treat every now and then and I run for up to an hour most days of the week. To lose 100lb in a year if that's what you really want to accomplish, then I'd imagine you need to be stricter with the measuring and weighing than what I am, keep to the portion sizes suggested to your by your doctor, adjust your band so that those portion sizes satisfy you and make sure you do regular exercise in some form or another. If you MUST reach that goal and you really do not think you can live with the restrictions the band places on you and the amount of work you have to do for a band to be effective, then there's other weight loss surgeries to consider, I know nothing really about them so perhaps others can chime in there. I can tell you that it doesnt stop when you've lost the weight, I have not changed my routine or exercise now that I'm maintaining rather than losing. I'll have to do this for the rest of my life. You've only got a little time, I see. Dont go ahead if you're not ready, you need to think about it. However, whilst its VERY scary to contemplate it really feels perfectly normal when you get there. But you must be ready to follow the rules. Good luck!
  17. Congrats on being banded! I just got mine on July 24th and let me tell you, I am so ready for some real food!! I have been on liquids for 1 week then soft, mushy foods for the 2nd week. Come on scrambled eggs!! During the 1st week, I was able to have pudding, and creamy soups. The best thing was the sugar-free fudgsicles because those allowed you to actually chew. Tomorrow start week 2 for me. So far I have had a great experience(except for the shoulder pain!) I have lost a total of 10 lbs since 5 days before my surgery. But they say this is time for healing, not losing weight. So hopefully it will coming off easier once I'm able to get some real nutrition in me. Well good luck!
  18. Hi Jamie. I had surgery 10/11 and stayed overnight but they were going to keep me a second night because my bp dropped into the 50's or something. I also had chest pain but not from gas. It was right in the center, doc said that it is common with the lap for a few days. They did EKG to be sure but when BP dropped they got worried and were going ot keep second night. But I was really drugged up so on Friday after they gave me my 7:00 am shot and my bp dropped, I asked them not to give anymore to see. I wasn't even able to get out of bed I was so lightheaded. By afternoon I was ok. I was lucky and didn't have any of the gas pain problems. Since then, I do continue to feel week but I am not drinking my protein drink because it is really disgusting and he wants us on this clear kind and not the powder because of the milk in it. So after the one week of clear liquids, I can go to the powder and I hope that gives me a little more energy. But my doc recommends a minimum of 2 oz of some kind of liquid every hour you are awake. I have jello, broth, ss popsicles which have been my savor really, crystal light and I repeat that to stay hydrated. If you dehydrate it will cause chest pain, body aches and not feeling well. If you continue to feel really bad, call doc. Other than the hunger thing, I feel fine and actually could function pretty well, even though I am a little sluggish. I hope you are feeling better soon. Let us know. Drink your liquids and if you can get that protein (60g) in. Wish I could. Oh, and your multivitamins too.

    Dr. Kelly Preop Diet Ideas?

I sent you a message with my phone number. I'm staying a few extra days in the hotel, so I'll be with you until the morning of July 4th. I emailed Omar, and he apologized for not sending me the diet sooner. He sent me an email of the same diet in the first post except that "potatoes" are removed. Plus, it says clear liquids only for 3 days prior to surgery and no eating for 10 hours before my arrival to Tijuana so I can do my pre-op testing as soon as I get in.

    Medicare Approval

I did not attend a seminar at the time I saw the doctor. I am going tomorrow evening. I am on Medicaid right now but go to Medicare in October. I saw the doctor several months ago and have done some of the tests but what is holding me up is some tooth repair which I had to save up 2600.00 for. That and all tests will be completed in October. I have not been told anything from his office about what medicare needs. Guess maybe I may find out tomorrow night or I will call them. My weight has been the same for several years within 10 - 15 pounds either way. I lost 40 3 years ago but that was due to leukemia. I have since put that back on. Yours seemed to be a snap, hope mine will be too !! Good luck I'm adding you as a friend if you don't mind, let me know how it goes for you

  22. So I was handling my pain pretty well the first week. I took my Dilaudid pills a good amount each day, 2 pills per dose (4mg total) about 2-3 times a day. I started weaning off and using Tylenol which worked for days 7-8. But when I took off my steri-strips, the next two days (today is that second day) I've been suffering with a lot of port pain. I would rate it as a 6 right now. I still have some Dilaudid and took 3 (I developed a tolerance) and I am still suffering from it. It's VERY uncomfortable and the port site is the ONLY place I'm really suffering. I only have like 8 pills left out of my original 30... ugh. What do you guys do for your pain?? -Jason

    sleeve or band?

Hi Jeffrey, welcome to the BEST support website for the Vertical Sleeve... I just wrote about my recent experiences with Band Vs Sleeve. I was revised on 9/15/10 and to date it is the best thing I've ever done. In going further, we do have a LOT of well established sleevers here who like to continue chiming in. They are all a great help, and none I've seen ever stop Loving their sleeves. Good luck to you!! Here is the link to my last 2 progress posts: 5 Months Post Op and My Revision is the Best Thing

Yes, I am down 10 pounds. It was 12 but now that I am on full liquids it's 10 which is awesome. I was really nervous. When we got to the hospital everyone is all...are you excited? And I was more nervous right now, lol!
  25. I had my sleeve surgery in 2013 and have had GERD 6 months after the surgery. I have been on omeprazole for 7 yrs. I went from 40 mg once a day to twice a day. My surgeon now feels that a revision is necessary to resolve this issue. I just meet with him on 10/14 and I am scheduled for surgery for 11/19 upon approval from my insurance company. I will have the revision and repair the hiatal hernia I have too. I did not think it would be this soon. I'm a little worried but looking forward to not having to worry about taking these pills and the effects if I dont. Alot of my family does not know I had the sleeve so now Im concerned about Thanksgiving when I will still be on pureed foods. Not sure what I will do but just praying all works out well.
