    Vsg to mgb?!

I agree with @catwoman7 Without the head work and getting to the bottom of why you do what you do.... No WLS is going to help in the long run. and defiantly going to Mex won't help as their only concern is getting the money. I was headed down there before i found my dr. here. They never asked if i had any type of counseling before. The only concern was booking me in and getting the money. I had counseling with the band and sleeve.... A lot of my eating came from wanting to control something.... My ex-husband controlled everything and food was the only thing i had. Plus I had been sexually assaulted at a teen and didn't really realize how much it affected me. But people eat for different reasons... The MGB was what i was going to Mex for. Then i found a dr here willing to do the "revision" 10 min from my work. He doesn't do the MGB so the sleeve it was.... 8/8/19. Mex MGB was like 8800 i think.... the sleeve here cash pay was 14k. But i factored in the time off of work, travel and the peace of mind that my dr was only 10 min from work and 20 min from my house...

    sleeve to rny

I agree with everyone else - go back to basics. Protein first, then non-starchy vegetables. Weigh/measure and track your food. It's too early to consider plastics (plus they don't really do plastics for weight loss, that I'm aware of - they lipo sometimes for small, stubborn fat deposits and/or to even things out, but to make people lose weight - no, not really...). And normally revisions are done for medical reasons. I'd give it another shot - you could probably drop more weight if you really buckled down.

    Sleeve Chat Room

I am also new here I found the place yesterday and posted something about needing bypass surgery due to the extremely painful gastric reflux that I have been experiencing now, five years after surgery, because the sleeve created pressure and acid all backed up. My memory is fuzzy on the gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago I believe I was about 230 lb after losing a little over 10 lb before the surgery. Losing weight after surgery was not difficult because there was no compulsion to eat. I think I got down to the 170's. That's when problems started. I'm a compulsive overeater and this procedure does nothing with my head and I did nothing to help myself like call my doctor. Now I am in the 190-195 range. even though I'm not eating a huge volumes of food I ate sugar. Maybe if I returned to the doctor when the problem started I wouldn't be in the situation I am now. My lower back and knees are very bad I have others conditions including fibromyalgia which makes me exhausted and staying in bed almost 20 to 22 hours a day. I am 72 today ,almost wrote 71, and going for an upper GI series later today so the doctor can see what has to be done. I have a hiatal hernia that needs repairing and to stop the terrible reflux he's going to do a bypass. I do not know how common it is to have the severe reflux, that's something I'd like to know about from other people. And for you not having surgery yet, you might mention it to your doctor. You might realize it's almost 5 in the morning for me and I have been up for hours. My insomnia has not helped with my overeating. Only sleeping a few hours at allows for unnecessary eating. Good luck to you all and I hope you learn I'm some of my mistakes.

    sleeve to rny

I wouldn't consider plastics until you've been at or close to goal weight for 6 months to a year. It doesn't seem like you've given it enough time yet to even consider a revision. I would get back to the basics and on track with your eating and try to lose more before I'd make any decisions. Good luck whatever you decide.

    Vsg to mgb?!

I had the sleeve and then due to acid reflux and my sleeve stretching I got the mgb. Unfortunately for me the reflux got worse after the mgb so now I'm getting a full bypass on Feb 3. What I can tell you was different for me was with the sleeve I had no pain and lots of energy. With the mgb I was really sore for at least a week and I was exhausted for at least 2 maybe 3 weeks. It also took longer for me to go from one phase to the other like clear liquids to full liguids, etc. I had to work harder to get my water in also, really small sips. I also found out about dumping which I didn't have with the sleeve. Hardly any sugar and I was laying down, sick to my stomac, heart racing, head spinning and then exhausted like an adrenaline dump. You learn quickly to avoid sugar! It gets better over time but here I go again with the revision.

    sleeve to rny

Why are you considering rny or plastics? To lose more weight? Have you tried tweaking your diet? You may be able to lose more weight without revising your surgery I personally would not consider plastics unless I was happy with my weight and stable for awhile. Give us more info and we will try to help you with your questions. Are you still sticking to your eating plan?
  7. I was sleeved November 2018was at 267hw cw is 190. bmi is still 30 have not lost additional weight since about 9 months post op. is it too soon to consider a revision should I just do plastics. please help Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Slightly Discouraged

I actually had the same issue. I had a distal pancreatectomy. My cyst was on the body of my pancreas. It was found during routine scans. And you can live without a pancreas. I have the head but it doesn't work. So I am a diabetic now. But i'm grateful to be alive. I did as well lost my spleen due to the location. I'm post sleeve going to bypass.
  9. Hello All! I am a newbie to this thread but I did have VSG in 2016. I lost over a 100 pounds unfortunately I failed my sleeve so now I'm going back to Mexico to have the mini bypass done. Notice I said I failed my sleeve not my sleeve failed me. I went back to my old habits. I still Have quite a bit of restriction but I'm just eat all of the time I have joined a support group and I'm also going to counseling for my eating disorder. Hopefully it will work this time. PLease don't judge but I am a heavy smoker and I am 41 years old and really worried about the surgery. I would like your opinions on the revision and any tips that anyone can offer. Thanks and well wishes to all!

    Regrets?

This is what I'm worried about. As you said, some people do just fine with the sleeve. But I'm afraid that if I went with the sleeve, it might cause GERD. I've had acid reflux in the past, but it went away after the removal of my gallbladder. But I'm really worried it may be a problem for me and then I may need to do a bypass. I've been contemplating the bypass for the last week now, it's definitely alot to think about that's for sure.
  12. Hello, this is my first post and I’m desperate for help. I’m 4 months almost 5 months post gastric bypass. I’m down 40 pounds. Only a few weeks ago did I notice I’m not feeling full like I was before. I thought it was just my body healing and I’d get back to my body limiting me on what I eat but it hasn’t. I realized that I picked up on drinking water while I ate and I’m just finding out that this is the BIGGEST no-no after surgery. I’m a water freak and just didn’t know how serious it was. Is there anyway I can go back to the way I felt (aka full) or did I ruin this for myself? I was going to go back on my liquid diet for the next week but I need to hear that I haven’t messed this up and want to take any advice I can get. It’s been almost 4 weeks since I’ve felt “full”. Please help me.
  13. I had gastric sleeve surgery 5 years ago. My gastric reflux has recently got so bad that's the acid burns into my ears. I was given a lidocaine solution that would help with the burning pain in my throat. I spoke to my gastroenterologist about a procedure I saw online for the reflux.  She said I didn't qualify so I went to see the doctor that did this procedure who happens to be a bariatric doctor. He explained why I was not good for the procedure because I had a stricture in the esophagus a hiatal hernia. Due to the gastric sleeve the acid is being forced up into my throat. The doctor wants to do a bypass which should relieve that pressure. I am going for an upper GI tomorrow.  I was wondering if anyone else as experienced this. I am new here I do not go on social media so I don't know my way around I will try to find my way back here.

      Orchids&Dragons

I was revised from a sleeve to a bypass 10 months out from my sleeve. I was waking up with acid in my mouth and burning the back of my nose. The bypass worked beautifully in eliminating the reflux. Oh, and to get back here, just google bariatricpal forums!

  14. I am scheduled for a gastric sleeve revision and hernia repair. Can I get some feedback on how long I should be out of work?

    March 11 sleeve date

I debated between sleeve and bypass-like most of us on here I suppose. The surgeon thought either would be reasonable but seemed to slightly favor sleeve, so I opted for that. Regardless, yes let’s support each other! I wish you good luck over these next few weeks. In some ways, it feels long enough in the distance that it’s still not going to happen and in other ways it feels right around the corner!

    Regrets?

I did but I am not typical. I knew in my heart that the bypass would have been a better surgery for me from the start. I feared the malabsorption and possible complications from bypass so I opted for the sleeve. never experienced gerd in my life. Until after my sleeve. about 1 year post sleeve I had gerd and a hiatal hernia. Ended up having to revise to bypass. Some of the things that made me think hard about having the bypass in the beginning was that I did not want to have to do surgery twice. having said that, there are many people that do just fine and are successful with the sleeve.

    Regrets?

I haven't had surgery just yet. I've met with my surgeon back in November and I told him I wanted the sleeve, but just a couple of days ago I've been considering the RnY bypass.

    Gastric Bypass complications

that happens to pretty much no one. The mortality rate on gastric bypass is 0.3%. That means you have a 99.7% chance of pulling through just fine. Your odds of survival are better with bypass than they would be with hip replacement surgery. people have died from having their tonsils out. But seriously, how many people are we talking about? Same with gastric bypass. It's one of the safest surgeries out there. I know it's human nature to worry about surgeries, but you are going to be just fine. Edited to add that you are more likely to die from obesity-related issues than you are from gastric bypass surgery.

    February Surgery ?

I'm Feb 3rd. I'm getting a revision from mini gastric bypass to full bypass to fix acid reflux. I only have a 3 day liquid diet, first 2 days are full liquids and 3rd day is clear liquids. I'm going back to Mexico because insurance won't pay for the revision. They said the acid reflux is a complication of my prior wls which is so not true! but whatever insurance does whatever it wants.

    March 11 sleeve date

I am also on March 11! But I am doing bypass. I hope we’ll be able to support each other, though! And my process has also been so, so slow. I started working on my requirements a year ago. Good luck!
  21. I had full RNY bypass in 2005 and lost approximately 80lbs. I was able to keep the weight off consistently for about 10 years until I suddenly lost the “Feeling Full” after meals and the weight started to creep back on. I struggled with almost a constant feeling of being hungry, which I had never had, after the RNY bypass. I returned to my original surgeon to no avail. His feeling was that I must be doing something different and not following the same lifestyle. I was referred to another Bariatric doctor who found a gastric fistula (essentially an opening in the pouch), and via surgery installed a metal clamp (also referred to as a bear paw). While this seemed to help initially, something still was not the same as it had been for the first 10 or so years. After much research and visiting several other Bariatric Specialists over the last few years, all while the weight slowly continued to increase, it was recently discovered that a portion of my pouch had attached and formed a connection to my original stomach, thus allowing food to be processed by both the new RNY pouch/digestive path as well as the original stomach/digestive path. Also the metal clamp previously installed was missing, and probably passed in the normal digestive process. This leads me to where I am today, having been informed that the best solution at this point is for a RNY Bypass revision. They will be going in and separating the pouch from the original stomach again, and suturing/stapling both sections off. I am waiting for the official revision date/insurance approvals etc, but the doctors office does not think it will be an issue at all. Fingers crossed that I will be back on my way to weight loss soon.

sleeve to rny for weight loss?

I had to pay for my sleeve out of pocket (went to Mexico) and now after gaining back 50 pounds in 2.5 years (!) I'm going to get a revision to gastric bypass in early March. For me, I think I had two reasons why I failed - first, I was distrustful of what my surgeon did. I came out of surgery feeling great (unlike everyone else on my floor) and had no problem eating or tolerating different foods when I got to those stages. One of the doctors told me that I had a really long stomach (!) and I wonder if that has allowed me to eat slightly larger portions as a result. I did well in the first 8 months after surgery, I was 100% dedicated to portion control and watched my macros, but I fell off the wagon at my dad's birthday (cake) and slowly but surely over time I was able to consume more, and eat more things I shouldn't have, over time. I knew going into the surgery that I had some food addictions, and unfortunately the last couple of years has taught me that these will be problems for me the rest of my life. There will be no "just once in a while" type of situations - sugar is a huge problem for me, and this next time around I know it will be gone for good - I'm not willing to fail after a second surgery (again, that I will have to pay out of pocket). I don't think anyone can know if your insurance will pay for a second surgery (only your insurance can tell you that), but if not, then I would look at cheaper options for self-pay.
  23. I think you have to really explore within yourself what caused you to fail. Yes, you had a lot of stress in your life. But why did you turn back to eating? This is what you need to work out, because RNY is not a magic bullet, either. The same thing can happen again. There is no guarantee that your life post RNY will be any less stressful. IMHO, I think you should go back to square one, as a previous poster suggested. Work through the issues. See that you can start losing weight again. THEN consider a revision. Look up your insurance company's position on line. Some will pay for a revision if a first surgery failed. Others won't. so you have to look it up. Print it out so you can study it very carefully. If you decide to go ahead, consult with another surgeon and show him how you have learned and grown from the past experience, that you have built a good support network, and are strongly motivated to succeed.

    Question of lower BMI patients

My journey started in 2009 with the band. I am 5'2" and my SW with the band was 232lbs. My weight for 7+ years was 143. In march 2017 i got the flu and my band slipped and had to have emerg. removal. I search everywhere for a dr. to do a revision because i knew that i couldn't control my weight alone. Everyone said the same thing.... You don't weigh enough... Over the next 2.5 years, i put on 30lbs. and still, i was told i didn't weigh enough. I was weeks from going to Mex when i found my dr. here. He qualified me as a revision. So 8/28/19 i was revised to the sleeve. Starting weight 173.5 (bmi 30-31) Of course i was also cash pay. 14k. today i weigh 134.6lbs.
