Wow everybody.. thanks for the replies. You all have confirmed what I had hoped. I will go forward with bypass and lose the weight. I expect my pain will be very little to none afterwards. Thanks again!

I was 59 when I had bypass surgery. Prior that I had moderate to severe pain in my right knee, particularly when walking up stairs. After losing 110 pounds it has essentially disappeared.

Thanks for the reply. I knew there was another one out there. I'll take the chance and do the bypass. Thanks again.

So glad I did it. Sure there have been odd times when I’ve thought oh if I hadn’t had the surgery I could ... but then I think if I hadn’t had the surgery I’d still be obese. I was fortunate pre surgery in that I wasn’t diabetic, no high blood pressure, no sleep apnoea or other health issues related to my weight, however, I realise that was all probably ahead of me. I‘ve had a few hiccups along the way but generally it has been pretty straight forward. I had some reflux, a very acidic stomach & a lactose insensitivity (thanks to a parasite I picked up teaching in central Queensland). I was pretty successful managing these probs prior to surgery (avoided any food or drink which would aggravate). Post surgery, I don’t think my stomach is anywhere near as acidic, dairy products don’t seem to bother me (the parasite can live in the lower stomach or upper intestines for ever so I wonder if it was removed with my stomach) & my reflux is about the same though I do still restrict my diet. I still get hiccups but no where near as extreme & gurgle a bit but ... shrug. Regardless if you progress with the sleeve or change to bypass, in the long term you will be so glad you had the surgery.

Wow! Way to persevere! Good luck with your revision.

Thanks for the reply. That is my guess as well, kinda common sense, but I was looking for confirmation. I still have a choice between VSG and bypass. The Nsaid is really the only issue with bypass which i prefer. Thanks again!

I have had a right knee replacement and the left might eventually be replaced. I had to stop taking NSAIDS right after my knee replacement because they were giving me duodenal ulcers. I have had a revision from a lap band to a RNY, and have only lost 34 pounds, and can already tell a MAJOR difference in both of my knees. If you have severe enough osteoarthritis, you may still need a knee replacement. But you will likely buy yourself several years before you might need one by losing weight. Good luck!

So finally after 3 years of fighting with my past insurance I am approved! I used to have BCBS IL and switched to IL Health Alliance through my employer. They approved me within a few hours! BCBS IL denied me three times and after peer to peer they still didn't approve because they said GERD was not enough to do a revision. Surgery is in three weeks!

Hi everyone. New to the group just starting my WLS journey. The journey started with a visit to an ortho surgeon for very bad knees. Recommended knee replacements and obviously weight loss. Being only 50yrs old I am going to focus on the weight loss and hope the knees improve greatly with weight loss. I believe with me wanting to lose over 50% of my body weight that bypass makes the most sense. I just had my consultation yesterday. My question is how much less pain, especially in the knees and feet, have you successful WLS patients experienced after 100 or more lbs lost?

Forced to do Bypass

I just met with my surgeon, Dr. Quilici last Monday (1/27/20). I wanted to do the sleeve but I have really bad GERD and have a hiatal hernia. He said he recommends the bypass because of my condition. I was in tears when I left. I also didn't want to do bypass but after researching, I know that it is the best option for someone like me. I feel you. The surgeon said the bypass will help my hernia and GERD, practically curing it. My surgery will be towards late March. -
Oh. I went originally for lap band. Went for sleeve. Should have known and won’t bypass then.

No way i never wanted it ..went straight for bypass

Possible Revision

I'm in the same situation as you are. I'm having a revision February 11th. -
I had RNY bypass 3 months ago doing great!!

I'm new to the forum. I had my sleeve done six years ago and I loved it...that is until 4 months ago when medication was no longer keeping my reflux in check. I've lost 150lbs and have maintained that loss. I had a hiatal hernia repaired last month and I still have gerd symptoms and I'm terrified of having a revision. Has anyone had a revision completed? If so which one? Did you have complications? Did you have hair loss again? Vitamin deficiencies? Any complications at all?

So are you getting bypass?

I had a sleeve done in 2015, did well, lost 92 lbs, gained back about 25 lbs now, during the past year as I cannot get my heartburn/Gerd under control. I was given Protonix again, was on it after surgery, but now a stronger dose... I went to my surgeon, actually his colleague in the same office and she advised to up the dosage of the Protonix and get an end and some studies done. I did that -- they did some Xrays, a CT scan, endo and colonoscopy and I was told stay on the meds at this rate for at least 3 months. She said any changes or its worse, come in and see her before the 3m time and since she was ready to give birth any mind, said to see her colleague. I did just that - she's out on maternity leave and I saw another dr. in her office and he suggested upping the meds again, to 2x per day and another over the counter at night time so avoid the GERD issues. I can't keep anything down, you'd think I would be thin LOLLL it's the opposite, I'm maintaining, but I have GERD 24/7. Its horrible, even water does it. So long story short - he said he would recommend the revision, which she did too - as well as fix an umbilical hernia I have that bothers me. The surgical coordinator called, temporary scheduled for March 18 for a revision, said he will get pre auth from GHI, my insurance and if it's weight gain, don't get my hopes up of it being approved.. he's always been a non friendly guy, even years ago, it's like I'm bothering him. He must deal with horrendous people all day to act the way he does, but besides that.... He said don't get my hopes up and he'll pencil me in for March 18. He said I didn't come back to the office for years, erhmm, why should I - I was feeling fine... Gastro doc told me my GERD could be due to the sleeve and to go back to my surgeon, which I did - has nothing to do with weight gain - I'm not dealing with GERD for the rest of my life.... It's really really bad.. Anyway, GHI said they cover the procedure, just needs pre auth and it could take 7-10 days to get back... so I'll keep my fingers crossed and not listen to the surgical coordinator guy ... maybe he needs a drink LOL Anyone have any luck with GHI/Emblem Health for the revision - my husband carries City Of NY coverage of GHI. Good luck all

I just got back from having an upper GI series. I was surprised to see that my stomach had stretched, the radiologist said it did not look like I had a sleeve surgery but it didn't look as big as I thought a normal stomach should be. Usually a microwavable meal for one will last me for 2 meals. Pre-surgery I could eat 3 bagels now I eat half of one of those very thin bagels so I can't believe the stomach went back to the same size but it has gotten bigger and there are times I do surprise myself and eat more then I should. I crave a frozen yogurt pop and most people would eat one and sometimes I can still eat three. the point I want to make is when I first started having problems with the craving of food in that first year I did not go back to the doctor I felt ashamed and that was the beginning of the problems with the overeating. I also have a fairly large hiatal hernia. I hope the doctor will be doing the bypass to stop the severe reflux as I mentioned before and I wouldn't mind losing 30 pounds. I would be very willing to talk to someone email or even if it can be done on the phone if you're having problems like I am or if you are able to give me support. Because support is one of the most important things to have when you're having these surgeries. Good luck to all of you.

Blood pressure crashed, I passed out walking to the kitchen.

Thank you for posting this issue, @Slimming Down Steve. It is something that I've heard a couple of times here previously but not so concentrated as this thread has been. It will definitely be something I watch out for when I have my bypass done. I'm also on BP meds and have been doing really well on them. My BP has been running low to right on track for the last several months thankfully. I'm glad your back hardware survived your fall! That is always scary. My husband has seizures and he has: almost fallen into the fireplace and the stove, he has had more stitches than I can even count from punctures and hitting corners of things, and more. I feel for you and your wife, because he doesn't always get "aura" or warning before he goes down and has the concussion record of most football players. I'm glad yours was a one-time thing and that going off the BP meds has done you well. -
Distal gastric bypass revision
FluffyChix replied to frosty 84's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I would think yes. Revisions don't usually result in lightening fast results. But additionally, you also are dealing with the inflammation from the surgery, plus the fluids you received via IV. So it will take time. Additionally, some people don't really start losing until they are able to eat normal food rather than protein drinks. Some people find protein drinks actually slow their losses. I was one of those people, so I do have a bias. Protein drinks were very insulinogenic for me. Congrats on your surgery! -

I had surgery 2 weeks ago and am not losing I lost 4 pounds and have stayed the same for a week is this normal?!?! -
Would you qualify for a revision at this weight or does your BMI have to be higher? Would this be self-pay?
