    Gallbladder surgery

I had mine out 6 weeks after rny because I was experiencing severe nausea/dry heaving and lower right back pain. The pain with gallbladder surgery was worse than rny. I'm still sore, and I had it done three weeks ago. I think it's different with everyone though. My mom had hers out after rny and she was up and about the next day. Good luck!
  2. Her Royal Nonsense

Tomorrow's the day, and now I'm nervous!!

It's completely normal to be nervous! A few weeks ago I was perusing my Fitbit app and noticed that I had data on my surgery day (I didn't take it off until they came to wheel me to theatre) and my heart rate was going crazy that morning. Best of luck!

    Psych Consultation

My pysch eval was an 800 question quiz to determine if I was "mentally unstable". I was honest with him and told him in an hour long visit (not including the quiz) that I have diabetes in the family and was concerned for my overall health. He asked if I was a binge eater and I said yes. He just asked when my last binge was. Then he had me promise that I would start so kind of exercise 3X a week and to give up my sweet tea. I told him that I would give that up when I get approved for the surgery and he said that was fine. He also asked that I come in at 20-30 lb weight loss and than again at 100 lb weight loss, just to see how I was handling the weight loss mentally. It was very pleasant and I have never seen a pysch before!
  4. Can anyone tell me what questons are asked at a psych evaluation? Is it possible to flunk the evaluation? Also, I had 3 hernia repairs within months of each other, a couple years ago. I have a ton of scar tissue, metal clips and mesh in my tummy. Will this cancel my chances of being approved? Kat
  5. I don't have trouble with chicken. I just don't like it! Nasty... Many WLS folks have major taste changes post operatively. Every couple of weeks, try eating meat---tiny bits. Usually beef will be the last dense Protein to be tolerated. Don't give up the ship! I thought about becoming a vegetarian once, but am EXTREMELY allergic to all beans/legumes. Oh, bother...

    I wasn't completely prepared....

@@VSG_lauren this is EXACTLY how I feel! I thought that I was ready but boy was I in for a surprise!! I'm tired all the time, can't eat but two teaspoons of puréed anything, fatigued and a little miserable. It's unbelievable that you REALLY can't consume not even what nutritionist would say is a normal plate of something! 6 month old babies can eat more than me:(. I pray that 6 months from now that I can say it was worth it and I don't regret it either..... I'm two weeks two days post-op 9/26/14
  7. I am one week out, and I Not been able to get my protein in yet. I have tried everything just makes me gag. This has been a slow recovery.

    I wasn't completely prepared....

This is so normal, but I felt like I was the only one who felt so bad. Even the nurse at my doc's office said people go back to work with no problem after a week or two. I was out of work 4 weeks, and could have been out longer. I was very weak and tired, and just felt pretty bad in general for the first couple of weeks. It did start to improve slowly after that, and I never did just wake up one day and think - wow- I'm better now! It was gradual over months, but every day was a little better than the day before. In fact, I can remember posting early on that I wasn't sure I would do it again if I knew what I was in for. However, at almost 2 years out, I'm so happy I did! I am thrilled every day that I've been given this gift. Hang in there, drink your fluids and eat as you are supposed to, and it will get better!
  9. I just had the surgery on Dec 23rd and it says not to lift over 10-15 lbs for the first 6 weeks on mine. My port is up on my shoulder and not close to my abdomen. I have had no problems and it was much easier than i thought it would be. I have had no solid food for almost 4 days now and have not been hungry at all, even during Christmas dinner at my sisters.

saying goodbye to my old friend...FOOD

It feels so good to know that I am not the only person who saw food as my "freind". I am 5 weeks post and struggling horribly with adjusting to my new lifestyle. Sometimes I feel like Im going through a form of with drawal because a familiar part of me is missing. My family can never understand where Im coming from or why I get soo upset when they order out or sit directly in front of me and stuff pizza in their mouths while I sip 1% milk and Protein. It gets so bad that I have to leave the room and spray lysol through out my home so that the tempting smells dont drive me absolutely crazy! I mourn my old friend all the time and I have difficulties eating and finding foods that work for me because deep down its not what Im used to.Then when I do find a healthy alternative I enjoy ,I cant enjoy it. I take 3 or 4 bites and Im completely full. any more and im on the verge of sickness. Food has gone from my best friend to that bully I avoid and am now afraid of. I have no clue how to get over this fear or where it even starts to get better. On top of that my fiance is taking to me vegas for our 6th anniversay at the end of this month and I am completely terrified I wont be able to enjoy my trip. I am technically now out of my 15-30 days puree stage but still not sure what foods I am allowed to eat or try or even if Im allowed a glass of wine on my anniversary. It all just scares me.

    July 6th surgery

I've got 3 days until my surgery. Haven't slept well at all. Good luck with yours! I'm sure we will both come out on top Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. My surgery is Dec 2nd and my pre op diet is 2-3 protein shakes and 1 lean, low carb, meal. But two days before surgery I just do protein shakes and water of course. I have been doing chicken and fish (Baked) and veggies. Only getting 1 or 2 carbs from protein shakes. Started this past Tuesday and my headaches are gone now. Good luck!

saying goodbye to my old friend...FOOD

A few months ago I was asking myself the same questions and questioning my decision to take such a radical step. Also, I went through a few months of food funerals and gained back 15 pounds I'd lost while going through all of my pre-op appointments. In my appointment with the surgeon to schedule surgery, he was really pissed off at me for gaining and put me on a 3-week pre-op diet. I took that seriously and dropped 31 pounds in 3 weeks, with Thanksgiving in the middle of that. My wife and I cooked for 20 guests and I consumed 450 calories that day. From a dieting perspective, the pre-op diet was the worst part so far. The shakes made me want to barf (and still do thinking about them). Dieting post-op has been a breeze for me. It's like I don't even have to try to diet ... The restriction takes care of my over-eating and my cravings are pretty much gone. I hope this lasts long-term because I'm loving my new outlook on food.

    Dehydration

One thing you can do to check if it is indeed dehydration is check your skin turgor. I have been doing it all week double checking to make sure I was okay. Hold your hand in front of you palm side down. Pinch the top of your hand and release. If the skin goes down quickly and elastic, you're okay. If the skin stays up or "tents" or takes a second to go down, you are definitely dehydrated.
  15. I'm 51, look 30, but 5'3" and 201. Waiting now for the approval and my BMI when I went in to see the doctor in April was only 198 and at 34.9BMI. I had talked to my regular PCP doctor and we discussed as stupid as it is, for me to gain some weight to get me to the 35BMI. WHICH HAS GOT TO BE THE DUMBEST THING, but it's working (lots of Starbucks shakes) I hate it, my knees hurt, hurts to walk up the stairs in my house, hurts to get out of the chairs, and my lower back feels like someone has hit me. I needed to be OVER 35 and ONE cormorbity (sleep apnea) and that's an entirely different story, but if that's what it takes to get me to the surgery then so be it. I was uncomfortable at 170 but with the amount of diet I was on, the amount of water and workouts I did, nothing helped in the last 3 years, so it's to surgery. They (medical) really need to do something for those of us that are under the 35BMI, especially if we can show years of hard work and testing and nothing helps. But gaining those last 20 pounds has taken about two months, it's been actually hard and I'm SO SICK AND TIRED OF JUNK FOOD. I am trying to maintain my 200+ JUST for this reason Doctors are evil.
  16. I'm wondering what foods people struggle with, even when in the green zone? I had my third fill a few weeks ago and have been doing pretty well, but recently have had issues with some fish, and also quinoa (which had previously each been fine). Only really at dinner time, been able to eat chicken, breads, fruit etc with no issue. Just trying to get an idea of what people accept as not bein able to eat and alternatively, when they think they're band is too full?

    Love & Hate relationship

My NP wanted off the protein shakes at 3 months and get my protein from food. I still drank one a day because I had a stricture and could barely eat anything but mushy until my 4th or 5th month. Drink as much as you can. If you can get 40oz in, you are doing great. I am 19 months out. A few bites and I am done, too. Welcome to your new normal. Your hair will grow back. Promise. Metamucil in your coffee or water will help with the constipation. You can't taste it and it works wonders. Find something else that makes you feel good. Relying on food to make you feel good is what probably got you here in the first place. That's a slippery slope you are treading so early out. Chocolate isn't giving you physical energy, either. It will give you a sugar rush and then you will crash. Bad bad bad cycle. Heartburn may never go away. I never had it before but I do know. I take my PPI and tums regularly. You don't want to hear this but chocolate gives you heartburn: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20443643_2,00.html ChocolateBad news for chocolate lovers: Chocolate seems to cause more reflux than any other food. It’s a triple whammy: 1. Chocolate contains caffeine and other stimulants such as theobromine, which cause reflux. 2. Chocolate is high in fat, and fat causes reflux. 3. Chocolate is also high in cocoa, and cocoa causes reflux. Theoretically, dark chocolate isn’t as bad as high-fat milk chocolate, but let’s face it—all chocolate is bad for reflux.
  18. Just going through the 2 week liguid diet. Only allowed 4 protein drinks and water. Getting through it. As of today down to 229 from 240 in 8 days. It's been rough the last 2 with being hungry. Switched my drinks to strawberry and chocolate and made it with my bullet with ice to make it like a shake. It's very good and helps to make it slower to drink. Fighting the allergies with being tired and soar throat, just took tylenol allergy for it. Need to get some energy back. Going to get the vitamins Monday before surgery on Wednesday. Legs and feet are starting to feel less swollen from the weight loss Wich is good for me, I retain water alot. My everyday and thoughts revolves around this new chapter in my life. Health issues and comfort food are my biggest issues. Always been able to loose weight before I hit 40, just can't fight against serious medical issues to even walk comfortably and two ankle/foot surgeries already. Another after the sleeve. Everyone has issues and that is why we are all here. Not to cure them all but to have tools to help our struggles how ever we can for better quality of life. I call my self a pear with legs! Small up top and bottom heavy...and it's not my waist. Thighs, hips and ass! Never will be proportioned. I'm ok with that. Just this body now keeps my physical activities very limited. Glad to be on here. Hope to learn, and support others. Here is to my last 5 days before a new chapter of being healthy and staying that way. It's my life!

    Heart Burn?

I had the worst heartburn before surgery, so far the only time I feel it coming on is when I over eat. (Who would have thought that I can eat 2 baby spoons of soup but 3 is too much). But the gas pain. I have never felt that kind of pain before. I thought my appendix must be bursting because no way that was gas. My father (had a hernia) said it sounds like a weak spot from surgery is causing the pain. Take chewable gas x and walk walk walk and try some positions to release the gas. My gas pains lasted for 3 days and so far I haven’t felt it again and hope I never have too.
  20. Yes, I have a pretty consistent history with weight records. Five years ago I went in (in the obese category) and started Fastin (other half of phen phen) and had to go in to see my doctor every 3 months to check in. I lost weight but put it back on, which is also documented. So I can prove the obesity and the gradual gain that put me into morbidly obese (what a term!)

    Sleeping hurts.

I wonder when can we sleep on our bellies? Any indicator or anyone remember how long after surgery? I am one week out.

    Crappy Subject

This is a crappy topic, but here goes: I am almost 5 days post-op from R&Y, and have graduated from liquid poop to dark, tarry, foul smelling, stools. Seriously, I told my husband he should probably leave the house for a few days. I know this can be one of the signs of Intnal bleeding, but couldn't it also just be leftover blood that was inside me from the surgery? Everything else is going great. I was kept in hospital for three days, and came home late yesterday afternoon. I am eating and drinking ok, and have little pain except when getting up and down. No energy yet, but that will return in a week, or two. Anyone have any crappy problems like this that took care of itself?

    issues with protein

Some programs don't allow protein shakes after a few weeks. I only get them week 1 and 2 then I'm done forever. All my protein has to come from food.

    weight loss

The initial weight loss is Water weight. Most people will experience a large amount of weight loss in the beginning (even pre op). But once you're a month post op and on to solid foods, it's going to slow down, but it's still coming off! Someone mentioned that this isn't bypass and they're right. Bandsters average 1-2 lbs per week whereas a bypass patient averages a pound a day (my doctor said so). Just be glad you're losing weight! I've read posts where people aren't losing at all. Keep up with that you're doing. It's working , trust me
  25. I have a desk job. I had my surgery on a Friday (outpatient), flew home to Portland on Monday from Las Vegas (Baby!) and was back to work 3/4 on Wednesday. Back full time the following Monday. So, it all depends on the person and how well they recover from surgeries.
