Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

@@Teachamy ... yes, this is maybe a bit on the high side, but I've averaged 1700 calories/day for many months now. I mostly walk outside for exercise. I also do a little yoga, stretching and floor exercises. But the winter and these nasty March days have meant I don't consistently do that now. And let me be very clear that I'm not at all a gym rat. However, I am so much more active than I used to be -- do a LOT more housework, run more errands, probably even fidget more than I used to. I can't say what will work for you, since WLS patients show considerable variation in how much and what kinds of food they can eat to maintain their weight. But I will offer this: When I was losing weight, my surgical practice's very well educated and experienced physician's assistant strongly urged me to eat more (not fewer) calories as my capacity increased. Specifically, she suggested that during months 5 and 6 post-op I eat 1,000 calories and during months 7 and 8 I eat 1,200 calories. She said that this would help my metabolism not get stuck at a lower level than it needed to be. Half a month later, I reached my initial weight goal (150 pounds). Then I, my PA, my NUT and my exercise consultant all agreed (based on my weight loss rate and history and my MFP macronutrient records) that 1,700 calories made sense as a maintenance calorie budget for me. But then ... very slowly over the next year while averaging 1,700 calories/day I've lost another 15 pounds. So obviously I need to be averaging more than 1,700 calories. In the last few months I've weighed from 133 - 138. I do NOT like weighing less than 135. That's why I've recently been eating more. This is just guesswork on my part -- but if you want to raise your calorie intake, do so very gradually. This will require you to actually track assiduously your food using something like MFP. Maybe raise it by 50 calories every week for the next month and see what happens. Then stay there. Then try that again. I wish we could just do a cheek swab and send it to a lab to see how much we can eat to maintain our weight. But it doesn't work like that. My own WLS experience and success has been ALL about observation and mindfulness. I don't worry about being perfect. Instead, I consider that everything I do just gives me more information to figure out how my body works. And believe me, 19+ months post-op isn't long enough to imagine I have it all figured out. P.S. I forgot to mention that I'm 70 years old. Was sleeved at age 68.

    pics before after..now stalled

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that how to do it is not the problem. It's why to do it. When you're fat, the reason is obvious. With a 100+ weight loss, the reason is less obvious. One thing you might try is this: Find a site on the web where you can enter information about yourself and then find out how long you have left to live. Do this 1st for your current situation, then do it again for where you want to be. Just a guess, but chances are you'll probably add 5-10 years to your life. That may turn the tide for you.

Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

Heh! That's exactly how I feel. I eat a lot, but I'm able to maintain 10 pounds below goal just by keeping up with my running!

    Sleeved 1/5/17

I just had VSG this last Thursday 1/5. So far so good. I can tell my stomach is still inflamed and it's hard to get liquids down currently but each day gets better. I have already lost 10 pds which was surprising to me as I thought I would be heavier after surgery. Glad to find a forum with people who are in a similar stage. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I GOT MY APPROVAL TODAY! I'm SO EXCITED!!! Surgery is on Tuesday August 11th.. I am on day 6 of my pre-op diet 10 lbs down with no cheating!! This day has just been amazing and its only noon!

Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

@@Andrew0929 You must have WAY less restriction than I do to be able to eat that much each meal. Your "lunch" is 19 oz. of food! I top out around 6 oz assuming the food has a high liquid content, like chili.
  8. Thanks for this thread. I'm going through the exact same thing. I lost 20 pre op and 21 post op. Surgery was 10/6. For the past 1 1/2 week I've still been at the same weight. I'm waiting for this stall to break. I was getting frustrated but this thread has relaxed me. Thx again!

    Food 1St Week

They started me on protein shakes on day 2. I currently am 10 days post-op and just now able to get two 11 oz Premier protein shakes in. A lot of dr will tell you to focus on hydration for the first week and then move your focus to adding protein in week 2. Just take it easy and sip, sip, sip! You will be able to build up to it. Also, if you have questions give your NUT or surgeon a call for clairifaction. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!

Ok. .. Same pattern for the 3 months post RNY ! Everytime I go even a tiny bit past full, I must be tickling that Vagas nerve! My nose will just run for 10 -15 minutes! How crazy is this?? Anyone else have this one?
  11. Hows it going for you all. I was sleeved on 10/19. Im curious what are you eatting and how much?

  13. Hey there! I hope those of you who already had your surgery are doing well. Mine is tomorrow (Dec. 19) I am getting anxious and a bit scared, but I am soooooo ready to start my journey to a heathier, happier me ! I had to be on a liquid diet 10 days pre-op and I have to agree with Haeather A....I am having trouble drinking my required amount....I'd rather just not eat. The problem w/me is I think not getting enought calories has slowed my weight loss and I am "afraid" of getting grief about that in the morning. LIke they may think I haven't been on the diet....I am probably just freaking out and over-analyzing. Bad Habit of mine:rolleyes Talk with you on the other side (of banding that is:clap2:) Cheri
  14. I had one today. I went for my annual mamogram. On the paper work they ask if you have gained or lost more then 10 pounds in the last year. So naturally I put yes. When I was finally led in to the torture chamber, the technician was going over my paperwork and ask if I had lost or gained. I told her I had lost 23 pounds. She ask me how. I figured she would see my scars anyway, so I told her I had lapband surgery. She said really! She then told me she had her stomach stapled like 20 years ago, and how awful the experience was and showed me her hidious scar. She also told me a coworker died from the stomach stapling. She didn't know anything about lapband, so I told her everything I knew plus I told her about the wonderful support network of lapband talk. She said she wished it was around when she had hers. Next thing I know she was leading me out of the room back to the lockers. She hugged me and said I probably won't recognize you next time you come in. It was so sweet and special...then I realized...I just had a mamogram and didn't feel a thing!
  15. I had surgery on 3/20 and am down about 37lbs total but have not lost any weight since 4/10! I feel slightly better seeing other comments about early stalls here. I haven't been tracking calories or actual total protein. I REALLY hate tracking - as someone else mentioned, it's never worked for me in the past, but maybe it is a good idea now? I will be upping my water intake, so hopefully that will kick start things again.
  16. I also had my surgery on 3/8/10...So I know what you mean...I have been sticking to Protein shakes and will occasionally splurge and eat some Tomato Soup or even some Potato soup that I have put in a blender...both do an excellent job of filling me up...I'm not even sure how you managed to drink an 8oz glass of milk as a matter of fact...I guess we all react differently to the surgery...i haven't been able to get down more than 2-3 oz of any liquid (even water) until today. Today was the first day I was able to get in about 5-6 oz of soup for dinner...and I'm STUFFED... :wink2: Just keep pluggin away at it...

    Depressed..lost nothing this month

I know a stall is hard. But I think my fitness pal is a great app that will help you. Also stay AWAY from the 'fat free' products and the surger free products. They have either more surgar (fat free) or a lot of ugar alcahol (surgar free). I like to eat the same thing, but I had to learn to change up the food and the exercie every few days cause your body does get use to it. Stalls do happen. I was stuck between at 196 for about a month. I thought that was the last weight loss I was gonna have. I did shed many tears. But a month later, It pickeed up like crazy. I went from 196 to 163 in just 2 1/2 months. And then boom another 10 lb out of nowhere. I have also learned to weigh yourself at the same time everytime you weigh yourself. Cause I use to weigh myself in the morning and then at night and it would look like i gained weight during the dqy. Then in the morning it was gone. This is a HUGE mistake. I hope this helps. Good luck
  18. I was also told I would lose 1 to 2 pounds per week, with some weeks not losing anything (plateau). I am losing an average of 10 pounds a month. Don't get discouraged. Try tracking calories, increasing your Protein, and increase your level of activity.
  19. Only did I regret it during the first 10 days. After that I felt a lot better physically and mentally. Sure there is the risk of complications with any surgery. But don't forget the risks of being overweight. They have to be considered too. I'm 7 weeks out. I went out to dinner last night. I had 2 nibbles of a chicken & cream cheese spring roll, 1 BBQ rib and a couple of bites of fried sweet potato cubes. For dessert I had 2 bites of a sugar free chocolate pie. There was a pretty long time from dinner to dessert. I came away very happy and satisfied. I had a taste of everything I wanted. Without the sleeve no matter my good intentions I would have over eaten. I still struggle with the 2 more bites on my plate. I have eaten them and then regretted it. Either feeling miserable or barfing!

    Weird periods?

This surgery is one of the reasons I had this surgery. No period for over a year unless medically induced. I was hoping I woulf get one this month because I hate having to take pills for it to come. Alas nothing. I guess I should justvtake my progesterone and carry one. pregnant 6 weeks later!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!! Losing just 10% of your body weight normalises your hormones, and for many seems to send your fertility into overdrive. Hence you "fell" so quickly. Please make sure that your surgeon ob/gyn actively manage any nausea throughout your pregnancy and delivery, especially over the next few months while your band is healing and your morning sickness is peaking. My surgeon said just three months post band is enough for surgery healing, so you are nearly there already. Enjoy this very special time!

    Accountability Texting Partners?

Hi everyone, Is this a thing? Accountability partners? Texting buddies? I'm kind of hoping so. I've been struggling for a little while now which I posted about elsewhere, and I've been racking my brain to come up with something that might help. Because of my schedule I'm not able to attend the support groups hosted by my surgeon's office each month and I don't really know anyone else going through anything similar with whom I could commiserate. In late November 2016 I was sleeved. My highest weight pre-surgery was 347lbs. My weight going into surgery was around 280lbs or just under and my current weight fluctuates between 196-201lbs. At 5'5" I'm hoping to get to at least 150lbs before my excess skin surgeries (for which I have no dates, I just know I'm going to have them probably in early 2019). I think this amount of weight loss is completely doable, but I'm having a hell of a time remaining accountable to myself. I've also found it motivating in the past to have another person kind of working in tandem with me. I was wondering if there was anyone who might be in a similar-ish boat and would like to be accountability/texting buddies? I'm hoping to get back to basics with my diet (have considered doing a sleeve reset diet for a few days) and have a gym membership but find myself not using it. I'd prefer to workout at home but it's hard to get cardio in at home. It would be nice to have someone to check in with about our workouts, exchange recipes or meal planning ideas with, and to support and encourage to meet their goals. About me: I'm 30, in a long-term relationship, dog and cat mom, full-time student, work part-time, have a very weird schedule, and am also in the midst of some very lame Seasonal Affective Disorder. Really love yoga, one day in the far future would be interested in crossfit, like pushing myself (except for when I don't). I struggle with discipline as far as fitness goes but am ready to sacrifice what is necessary to finish making my dreams a reality. Just hoping to do it alongside a new friend. Anyone interested? P.S. If this topic somehow isn't allowed, I apologize.
  25. After struggling and yoyo dieting for years, I finally decided to get the sleeve. I thoroughly researched the surgery and my surgeon before doing it and I am SO glad I did! I can't believe the energy I have now! I think getting your mind prepared is most important! I think that if I wouldn't have made sure that I really committed to changing my lifestyle, I wouldn't have been so successful so far! For those of you that decide on this surgery, you must be compliant or you just won't see the results! Rule of thumb...don't try to eat bad foods. Just assume you can't and DON'T!
