Keeping it a secret? Anyone else
chunckylady replied to Dualstarr's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a "secret lap band" in 2008 and it was REALLY hard not telling people. only my parents and husband knew of the surgery. The fact that everybody knows me for my hefty eating habits made me self conscious during holidays and dinners with friends and family. This made me try to be discrete and I would eat more than I should have with did not help me in the long run. My band slipped during my last pregnancy (less than 1 year post-op) and I've had reflux issues and weight gain. Now I weigh more than I did at 9 months pregnant and I'm preparing for a revision surgery to get the sleeve after the band comes out. I don't want to hide this surgery, I don't want to come up with excuses for not eating, not being hungry and actually even eating more than I should. Who cares what people say, EVEN IF IT YOUR MOTHER, we are adults and this is a medical decision for our health. -
Don't feel guilty - I can't imagine anything you would have done to cause the port to flip. Good luck with your revision!

No Fist Fill Till 28Th And Gaining
bluetigereyes replied to heathernotafeather's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I got my band on 12/22, I went in to get my first fill on Feb 5th, and my port had flipped...so I had to wait 2 more weeks to get my first fill. After my first fill, I couldnt feel anything different. I did lose 2 lbs 9by sheer willpower). I had my 2nd fill 3 weeks after my port revision. Now, with that second fill, I can sure tell a difference. I am only eating 3-5 bites at a time before I get that tight feeling in my chest. I made the mistake (once) of eating another bite after I felt that fuillness, and it all came out! I am still fighting being hungry every 2-3 hours, but eating just a few bites at a time, I know that I will see a loss on the scale. Its been 2 weeks since my 2nd fill, I go back in 2 more weeks, I think with just a tad more tweaking, I should be at my green zone and see the weight coming off! -

I too had a lot of UTIs post sleeve! Isn’t that weird? And with the antibiotic restrictions post weight loss surgery they were hard to treat! Post revision I haven’t had one yet so yay! I’m glad I’m not the only one who experienced that with the sleeve…I thought I was just gross 😬 -
My port is hard to get into for a fill
genepha replied to tutornmom's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I also have a lot of difficulties with the doctors finding my port. I always have fills under fluoro at the hospital and it still takes them like 5-10 tries before they get it. It is very frustrating!!! My port is tilted and a revision may be necessary but for now I am filled just right so things are good. The drs and I finally discovered that I need to be standing for them to access my port! The things we go through for a fill!!:rolleyes2: -

That's right. So strange. I had the most difficult time getting treatment because how often they occurred. "Too soon for another prescription for antibiotics..." Etc. Over 1 yr. 2 months now, not one UTI (I would've had 3 or 4 in that time frame pre-revision. I have no idea why the sleeve gave me constant UTIs. Never heard of it nor read about it so at the time, I didn't think it was connected. I honestly didn't think it was the sleeve until a couple of months after my revision, I was like... Wait, what happened to my constant UTIs? So glad there is someone else out there that can identify with me. -
Thx for the info! I'm already emotional abt it all! All I do is research, and look for answers online. I'm mad that I have to go through this. I thought of revision, but the fact that it could slip again or erode??!! Ummm just not enough confidence to make me revise. I know it was never guaranteed but I swore it was a one time thing!! BUT now after researching like a nut...I see sooooo Many complication stories: slips & erodes--scary! I won't let that happened to me again! I'm worried abt weight gain. I have been with a personal trainer for 5 weeks & now I have to give that up for awhile I guess bc of the surgery. I'm gonna miss my aqua classes :-( I'm more mad abt not being able to exercise the way I have been lately :-( How long does it take to be able to exercise!?

Alrighty, things got real today!!! I'm so excited to be on the sugery schedule! Things have gone very fast. I made the decision to go for this new life on January 1st. I was in the enteromedics study with the recharge device. This has recently been fda approved, its a great device and it worked well for me....until there was a glitch and the thing shut off. So technically, I am having a revision.

An observation: I know NO ONE that has wls...
pantala replied to marfar7's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yep, I know what you mean. That's why I have only mentioned it to my family and then I had to do a tutorial which ultimately meant nothing..... I can't imagine having to explain revision. You can just stop now if you want: don't tell anyone new and if the subject comes up, say you have the situation in hand, you'll be fine, blah blah, etc. Best of luck! -
OMG! I can still eat so much - HELP
pear425 replied to Mid West's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You always should follow what your surgeon and Nut tell you to do. They are the trained professional. If you trusted them to do your surgery you should trust them with the food stages. Every surgeon has different rules, even though we are having the same procedure. It is their years of training and experience that made them dictate their post op eating plans. My revision surgeon has you go right to purée but my original surgeon 9 years ago had 6 week transition period. Also my Nut is very clear that it is all about protein. We don't count calories in the beginning. -
Did your insurance make you go through the steps again?
2goldengirl replied to Wendydarling19's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It depends on two things: first, what your health plan's guidelines are for revision from band to sleeve (they all differ). And second, each surgeon may have requirements of their own for revisions. Call your health plan and ask for a copy of their guidelines for revision of bariatric surgery. Good luck! -
Pre-Op Diet and Surgery
dawalsh replied to Cwalband's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm here to attest to the fact I was fearful all the way being wheeled into the OR. I've had many surgeries and as my doctor put it the scars I have look like the road map of Europe . Every time I have had surgery I have had that fear but came out of it fine everytime. I think it's normal to be a little anxious before any type of surgical procedure. My doctor requires an overnight stay for all his patients having Lapband surgery in case of any complications. If I was having the sleeve he would require a 3 day stay and 4 days for bypass surgery. He's pretty thorough. When I had my port revised because it flipped I was released early evening. I went in the OR at 7:30 was in recovery by 9 and released at 4 PM. I still had that fear going into the OR but was given an injectable sedative to relax before being operated on. Thank God everything turned out OK. Best wishes to you! -

I had revision 4 weeks ago and did have the extra test, was put to sleep first.......but they r looking for band slippage or erosion thru the stomach lining and if its all good they will do the revision n same day instead of waiting a few month to do sleeve -
Mickeymantle I'm not quite sure how you came to the conclusion from my minimal post that I am not ready for the sleeve. My band NEVER gave me restriction, had an Upper GI recently that validated the fact that there was no restriction even with a complete fill. There are health problems associated with my band, as I stated I have Lupus, which was diagnosed post-banding, Lupus is a contraindication for the band as there is a foreign substance in your body and Lupus is an auto-immune disease. So regardless of wether I'm sleeved or not, the band has to go. I'm assuming that you have suggested therapy to everyone on this board, as everyone that requires bariatric surgery has some type of food issue, otherwise bariatric surgery would not be necessary and 35% of the population of the United States would not be considered obese. I am ready for the revision, my husband is the one that has concerns. Not looking for judgement on my decision, looking for assistance in convincing a loved one.

I would ask these questions: 1. How many bands has he/she placed, you are looking for a high number, a couple of hundred is a good. 2. How many revisions to other surgeries have they had to do, if they take out more bands than they put in--run, ideally you want a very low revision rate to any other surgery. 3. Aftercare is MORE important than the band, ideally you want a surgeon that do his own fills, but if he is busy, ask if he has a physician assistant that is trained in surgery as well as perform fills. Also part of aftercare is diagnosing and treating any type of lap band issues, you want to make sure that your surgeon will not outsource this, many lap band surgeons either work closely with GI doctors to do EGD's or Radiologist to do Upper Gi,'s etc, and most lap band surgeons are skilled to fix hernias, etc. Also your lap band surgeon should ONLY treat and diagnose any lap band related issues you may have, such as determining if your band is adjusted properly and following your progress, you don't want a PCP doing this, they are not skilled to do so. 4. Fills, should be administered by your surgeon, or a skilled PA, not just anyone. Ideally you want a surgeon that will be available to fill/ or unfill your band if needed and not on a set schedule, but ideally every 4/6 weeks the first year. Good luck

Which was your old and what is your new? Anyhow, so glad you are recovering well. I'm sorry you are hungry Egg Drop Soup...Yeah Baby!!! -
Please Help Me Decide ...
Kami63 replied to Andrew0929's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't regret getting my band bc I would certainly have climbed to over 400 lbs without it, but I am revising to a sleeve on 6/25 due to complications with my band. I too did not have the sleeve options when I was banded 6 years ago. On lapbandtalk.com you will find many wonderful success stories and many horrible complications as with any surgery. Do your research and find what fits you best. I personally am ok with having 85% of my stomach cut out after having the horrible complications I had. But I am still not ok with the bypass. Good luck! -
This is extremely hard since you need to be signed off by your doctor to get the approval letter sent to your insurance. I found away around going to my primary doctor and went to my obgyn. she was caring, compassionate and sent in the referral for my revision surgery. Now I drive 2 hours away (4hrs round trip) out of network to get the proper care from my New surgeon. So there is an additional cost but I think I am worth it! Good luck!

I'm planning on revising to the sleeve. I've had problems with my band with vomiting. Not sure if it's from not chewing appropriately or what. But I was just wondering if you don't chew well with the sleeve does it cause problems? I have a class 3 malocclusion. Basically my teeth don't meet in the back and I literally have to push my lower jaw forward to chew. Sometimes I feel this causes problems with me chewing well. So I was just wondering if this will cause problems with the sleeve? I may try to ask my surgeon tomorrow if I remember but I wanted some input from people who have the sleeve TIA

I had the lap band in 2008 and just did a revision from the band to the sleeve so has my mom and my aunt. For me personally I don't care for the lap band I didn't ever really work for me and in the end it became displaced so I had to do another surgery... -
Should I band or VSG having doubts
BayougirlMrsS replied to offigo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
band worked and is still working for me and all my friends that had LB are still going strong, except for my sister in law. She got her band in Mex and had nothing but problems. She just revised to GB. I hate to be a debbie downer... but three weeks ago i had supper with her. We stopped at Taco Bell (yuck) but that's what was available at the time, anywho.... i had pintos and cheese and a scoop of ground beef... she had the new smothered burrito and ate the whole thing... I don't see this surgery lasting long either... Just saying. Three friends had the sleeve, one had it done 5 years ago and has gained about 50lbs back of the 100 she lost. One only lost about 50 of the 100 she said she needed to lose and the last friend just had it done in Feb and ended up in the hospital in March and had to have a stint put in due to complications. I know this is not related, but, four of my friends had the GB done. Two have gained all the weight back, one is on her way and the other is doing great. -

Hi guys! I'm 24, I'll be 25 in April. In the process of planning my second wls: revision from the lapband to the bypass. The band just doesn't work for some people unfortunately. I'm hoping for a second at life! -
I'm in the process of revising my band to sleeve. I have no insurance so the surgeon quoted me $12,500 for everything. I have managed to come up with $6,400 so far!!! I'm halfway there and getting anxious lol!
