  1. Mini bypass can also cause reflux issues.. RNY is the best option

    Weight gain

I regained seventy pounds after my weightloss. It took me two years to lose 40lbs. Still working on the next 30. You can get a revision to RNY but first you should work on why you started eating again and how to address that. I am not on board with super restrictive dieting. It doesn't work for me. I just rebel. It is part of my eating disorder to binge if I am too restrictive. I just watch what I eat and only eat 4 times a day. This is why my weightloss has been so slow since the regain. But you need to find out what works for you. I am a big believer in out of sight, out of mind. So I do not keep any trigger foods in my house. Living with my Mom and her house of trigger foods was what caused my regain. I have to take care of her but I can not live with her. so I moved nearby. Good luck with your weightloss. If I can do it, I feel certain you can.

Anyone a few years after bypass?

I am 4 years out of an open gastrectomy partial obstruction surgery and 3 years out of the gastric bypass to repair gastroparesis from a perforated ulcer. Yes, I was overweight and the surgery helps me lose weight. But it has left me for the rest of my life with a malabsorption Disorder. So I do get iron treatments. Every 3 weeks. I do take all of my medications liquid. I do have chronic bowel obstructions. Now I'm a female so my malabsorption issues are going to be different than yours as a male. My best advice is to Take your vitamins. Get your blood work. Have a great doctor when you retire. And keep up your protein. Live life like you've lived it the day after surgery 20 years from now.
  4. Hey I wanted to let you know that I just had Gastric bypass RNY on 1/27 and I’m on Pre-soft foods diet until my two week postoperative appt then they will advance me to soft foods and I will be on that for another ten days then move on to regular diet. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with and what will make you feel satisfied and not sick. I have broke out with allergic reaction and I’m itching to death I really not even eating much hoping to get relief tomorrow with doctor visit. Good Luck😊
  5. I plan to retire to the Philippines in 10-15 years. Is managing the nutrient malabsorption an issue many years after surgery?

    FEBRUARY 2020 Surgery dates🌹❤️

I'm the 24th, going for revision as well.
  7. My doctor requires 2 nights in the hospital for his bypass patients. I was glad to be there 2 nights as they kept me on pain and anti nausea meds. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. So, I went through my hospital's weight loss supervision program. Only 3 months of classes and appointments. I was so stoked when I got approved for surgery (bypass) by the surgeon on the 17th of January. I was told it could be as little as 3-5 days before I would be called to schedule the surgery. Unfortunately, this practice is very short handed and it's nearly impossible some days to get ahold of anyone. Let alone figure out what's going on. So turns out my surgeon went on vacation for a week after my last consult. Ok. Then they had trouble getting it submitted to the insurance company. Several phone calls and transfers later, I finally got the prior auth submitted. Now to wait for approval. Apparently my insurance company approved it within 3 days... But I still have not heard from anyone. It's now been 3 weeks since my last appointment and nothing. Not even a time frame. I called and got through to the scheduler (holy cow), and she said it's waiting on the financial woman. So I called and left a voicemail for her (yesterday). I didn't hear anything today and I intend on calling again tomorrow. But I have been advised to be patient by some and others (who went through the same office) told me to pester the hell out of them until I get results. Conflicted, depressed and thinking the surgery is never gonna happen! Anyone else have similar situation? I have been slipping into eating bad stuff again because I'm just bummed out.
  9. since you have reflux, this decision should be a no-brainer. RNY. I would not even consider sleeve. P.S. I had gastric bypass for that very reason. I had GERD pre-surgery, and there's no way I wanted to risk it getting worse. I see a lot of people revising from sleeve to RNY for that very reasons - sometimes people who never even had GERD prior to surgery. I hav no regrets at all - I'm very happy with my RNY.
  10. If you have gerd it is not a good idea to have the mini bypass. It carries a far higher risk of bile reflux. Personally I think the name mini bypass should be banned. It gives people the impression that it is a minor surgery which it is not. It should be referred to as an Omega Loop gastric bypass or Single anastomosis gastric bypass. Generally the RNY is the procedure that has the best track record for preventing or alleviating reflux. There are of course people that still have issues but everything has an exception.
  11. I take Duloxetine 30mg capsule for nerve pain following a back surgery. Will ask Dr about it at my 3/2 pre-op appt., but wondering if anyone here has had experience with it? And if able to take it post-op, any issues with dosage after Gastric Bypass? Thanks!
  12. Hi, I had a slipped lap band that needed to come out. I thought I wanted a sleeve until my doc explained that it was easier to revise a lap band to a bypass because of the scar tissue the lap band causes. Then he explained about the GERD the sleeve can cause and that clinched it, because before I got the band I had TERRIBLE GERD. So I went with the bypass. I stayed two nights in the hospital. They were willing to let me go late in the day after the first night, but I live five hours away by train, and was afraid of something popping up on the way back home, so they (and my insurance!) let me stay an extra night to make sure everything was OK.
  13. Your Surgeon is absolutely spot on, IMHO go with the RNY bypass I chose VSG originally as I had no precursors to GERD/Reflux but I developed it along the way. I had to be converted to RNY. *Please note: It doesn't happen that way for everyone* The decision you may have to weight is if you are at a higher risk (which you are) will you be comfortable having a second surgery (revision/conversion) Good Luck❤
  14. Briswife15...With your G bypass, were you 2 nights in hospital or 1? Not sure what’s average... Thanks!
  15. Hello! I'm 10 months post gastric bypass and chose that at my doctor's suggestion since I already had GERD, and the sleeve can make it worse. My diabetes is gone! Hope the same for you post surgery. My insurance doesn't cover mini GB, so it was bypass for me. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  16. Hi All... Not sure if there is already a thread for March surgery yet, but if not, here’s one and ready to support one another! My Gastric Bypass is scheduled 3/11/2020...working to get my head right for 2 week pre-op😳!
  17. MsMocie, may I ask what the difference is between Mini Gastric Bypass and regular Gastric Bypass? Thanks!

    Pre surgery liquid carb drinks?

Never heard of this but it makes better sense recoverywise than the starvation one usually has initially with weightloss surgery. Yes, There are no more self administered pain meds. They are very concerned with patients becoming addicted. This drove me crazy as I was in a lot of pain (which believe me poster is not usual at all) and oxycodone did nothing to stop it. I would have killed for a morphine drip. Don't worry poster my situation is very different from yours I was getting a revision from RNY to SADI and I am sure you will be fine.
  19. VRox33, Hello, and I’m a newbie as well😅. When I saw surgeon last Oct. my mindset was same as yours—set on sleeve, and only sleeve. He asked re: acid reflux and yes, I do have it at times. His explanation and picture drawing of what happens to GERD/reflux after sleeve was a major let down, but I (secretly) still held hope for sleeve. As I researched more, and especially the very real experiences on these support boards, I realized he’s SO on target. The risks/dangers/incidents of increased reflux after sleeve seem far riskier to my situation than RYN. Yes, we’ll perhaps have a few more challenges with absorption and medication adjustment, but hopefully, ideally, our surgery will not only be a “one and done” requiring no revisions, but our acid reflux will be greatly alleviated, as well. I also feel great trust and confidence that RYN has been around the longest, and still considered the gold standard by many people. Just my experience...Best Wishes in your decision!
  20. Hello everyone! This is my first time posting anything to a forum, so please bear with me! I am 5' 5" and 225lbs. I went into my first surgery consult last night thinking that I wanted to have the gastric sleeve. Because I have a history of heartburn, and already take Protonix, my surgeon also suggested a gastric bypass. He said that there is a much greater risk of my heartburn getting much worse with the sleeve procedure vs gastric bypass. I also have type 2 diabetes, with A1C's always at or below 7. I take Jardiance and Metformin, although the Metformin had been prescribed originally for my PCOS. What has your experience been? How did you decide which surgery was best for you?
  21. My sleeve and I failed. Despite numerous attempts to reset it, nothing has worked. It's also clear that I have a sugar addiction. I should have done the bypass from the beginning, but I was a little fearful of it and the lifetime of supplementation. I'm hoping that the bypass, and knowing what I know from my previous experience, that this will be more successful.
  22. March 3rd, sleeve to bypass revision. I started my pre-op diet this week (I don't need to for another 2 weeks but I wanted to get a head start). The hard part for me is that I will be travelling for 3 weeks before my surgery, so I hope that I can deal with all the different foods while away. I'm an outlier here as I'll be getting my surgery done in Estonia (!). I live in Japan and there's only one really expensive place in Tokyo to get it done -- it's just easier and cheaper for me to go abroad, since no matter what I choose, I have to self-pay. I had my last surgery in Mexico, so this will definitely be a change. It's really interesting how different the recommendations between the US/Mexico and Europe are for eating both pre- and post-op. I get to have a full meal (carb-heavy) the day before surgery!

    Safe meds for arthritis?

Briswife, You Go Girl!!! Sooo proud of you with our “relatively diminutive height”😉 and knee pain challenges for you to have lost 102 lbs in less than 12 months is Amazing to me!! Fantastic that your knee pain is 90% better-gives me Hope! I pray you can get relief for your neck..hopefully someone here will have answers. I’m also currently taking Cymbalta (duloxetine) for nerve pain and I fear at pre-op he’ll tell me no more of that, either. Along with diclofenac substitution, does anyone here have experience with Duloxetine/Cymbalta after Gastric Bypass? Thanks and keep up the Great Work, Briswife!
