  1. Welcome. Most of us are "champeen" losers. Most of us have lost hundreds of pounds countless times in our lives. And clearly most of us suck at maintaining. Not only are we fighting our internal habits of a lifetime with food (addictions, using food as a drug, disordered eating behaviors, etc), but we also battle our metabolism and the neurohormones and gut hormones and insulin/glucagon, derangement that happens once obesity has set in. So we are walking time bombs. I would encourage you to spend time doing the head work. I would encourage working with a counselor and an RD. Please don't wing it. You only get one golden shot. After that, revisions become dicier and weight loss is usually slower plus you'll be out a lot of money. Please consider what kind of surgery you need. Do you need malabsorption in addition to restriction? Only you know this. Hope you post often.
  2. Weight management has always been an issue my entire life, I have gained and lost over 100 pounds THREE times in the last 15 years, hoping the FORTH time post-surgery will be the last. Whatever diet program, book, shot or pill that has come along in the last 15 years, most likely I have already tried it and unfortunately failed. If your “considering” non-surgical alternatives to weight loss surgery feel free to ask me, most likely I have used it at least once and have accurate records of what was used and what were the results and pros / cons of each. The “pill of the month” currently is Contrave Blue which I have been on since December 2019. I have been avoiding weight loss surgery for years. My sister had full bypass surgery 20 years ago and unfortunately, she has suffered complications for many years. At the end of 2018 I had ballooned to the heaviest I have ever been, started January 1, 2019 I was a “Big Mac and Large Fry” away from 400+ pounds. My blood pressure was extremely high, and my new primary care physician was very blunt during my first visit, “lose weight or die” was the basic theme of our health conversations. Even with that much bad news and new physician pushing for weight loss surgery, I still was trying to avoid surgery. I decided to take an alternate route, take some time off from work and attend a Weight Loss Boot Camp for 10 weeks at a cost of over $15,000 self-payed of course since health insurance does not cover this type of activity. Unfortunately, life has ways to make things difficult at the worst time and I only was able to complete 6 weeks For those interested I have a blog that chronicles my weight loss efforts at the weight loss bootcamp last year, good reading for those thinking about that route. https://vin1959.blogspot.com/ For reasons I will expand on in future messages, the weight loss boot camp adventure did not get the job done and weight loss surgery has now become necessary. At this stage I am not going to play the “pre-approve documentation game” and wait for my health insurance company to say I am covered, I am simply going the SELF -PAY route and will plan for the Gastric-Sleeve procedure hopefully in April this year.

    Lap band to gastric bypass

That's great news all around. Hope the weight management program goes well. I started my pre-op diet today while we are driving home from Arizona. My wife has decided to do it with me which is a huge plus. God bless her for supporting me through this journey. The first day went well. My revision surgery is coming up on Feb 27. Pre-op appointments are on Monday with the surgeon and nutritionist. It is our final meetings prior to surgery. It's been a journey to get to this point, but it is only just beginning. I have been struggling with weight control since my lapband was removed in December. Traveling the last several weeks hasn't made it any easier. Hoping the pre-op diet will get me back my weight las month.
  4. I am scheduled for bypass on March 10th, but if I can get the financial stuff figured out earlier, it can be rescheduled to March 3rd. I am super nervous but excited. I lost 90 pounds on a medically supervised weight loss in 2018 and then my thyroid misbehaved and I gained it all back and then some. I have boxes full of clothes I would like to wear again, lol. Plus I want to be able to fly comfortably. I currently do Orange Theory 3 times a week and I am going to miss that during the post-op downtime!
  5. Just had my appointment with my surgeon & told him I wasn’t taking my multi vitamin & why. He was fine with it. Agreed better I eat than be nauseated & not eat. He also confirmed they are not as necessary for sleeve patients as they are for bypass BUT I had to ensure I was eating a balanced diet. My medical team will continue to monitor my bloods as usual.
  6. My sister took 2 weeks off from her bypass surgery (office job, but had 2 little kids under 10 at home). My old boss took 4 weeks (teacher). Neither had robotic surgery which research said costs more but is supposed to be less painful with potentially faster recovery. I work in elementary special ed, and I'm taking just shy of 2 weeks (Mar 26-Apr 7) going back on a half day/non-instruction planning day Apr. 8th to see how I feel. I might take the rest of that week off for an extra 4 days if I'm healing slow. My clinic paperwork says patients will generally be able to swallow any med under the size of a pinkie nail after surgery. Pill powder (or crushed pills) can be put in thin liquid or applesauce. They recommend one a day bariatric fusion multivitamins but to take them x2 a day. The nutritionist said to either get the chewable or to open up the capsule and put it in a spoon of food/fluid. I have a splitter already but a pill crusher might be handy.
  7. Hello everyone I had my bypass Monday now im either woefully hungry or can't easy at all. I can't drink much anymore and the protein water is disgusting. I can't even do the broth without retching... any food suggestions up hey me out of this rut? Please Sent from my SM-J737A using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. My friend had to lose 13 pounds before having gastric bypass surgery. I'm going to the same doctor, so I wonder if I will too. If I could lose 13 pounds, I would have done it. Do you know what I mean? The only way I figure I could do it would be to go on a liquid diet. Did you have to lose weight before the surgery and why?

Neither had robotic surgery which research said costs more but is supposed to be less painful with potentially faster recovery. I might take the rest of that week off for an extra 4 days if I'm healing slow.
  10. I work a desk job also - in Health Insurance ironic right. I'm taking a week off then a week working half days from home. I'm scheduled for 3/2. I know it's a 2 week minimum for sleevers...not so sure for bypass peeps. Sent from my SM-G950U1 using Tapatalk
  11. Hi March people! I am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on March 5th. I am getting nervous, anxious and excited. I work a desk job (accounting) wondering how much time people take off for Bypass (robotic) before heading back to work. I am tenatively taking a week off then will work from home for 2 weeks before heading back to the office.

  13. Hello All, Does anyone have any REAL LIFE experience(s) with taking alternative plant medicines like ayahuasca or san pedro, for religious practices, after undergoing either gastric sleeve, bypass or gastric banding. I'd like to gather this information from people that have first hand experiences or maybe second hand from a friend, but i'm not asking for the opinions from those who have not these experiences. Thank you.

    Liquid restriction

I was revised from sleeve to RNY yesterday. Today I can do way more than sip water, Propel, and crystal light. Am I correct in assuming that liquids are going straight through like a slider and that I have nothing to worry about other than liquid, protein, and vitamins?
  15. GotItDoneInHarlem

    Done and Done!

I was revised from a sleeve to a RNY for GERD.

    United Healthcare History/Requirements

So I have UHC choice plus. They told me over the phone that they required the 5 year weight history, 6 month diet visits and so on. But I went and looked at the policy online and saw that they had revised their policy and guidelines at the end of the year this past year. In the revised policy, there was no 6 month diet needed and no mention of the 5 year history. So I called again to verify that and they told me no, that I needed the 6 months diets and blah blah blah. So..... I saw my surgeon for the first time to get this all started on dec 27. The nurse told me she would just send in for the prior auth and see what they came back with. When she sent in for the prior auth, all she had was my 1 office visit with them, my psych eval and that was it! I got approved in 4 days. Yes, it has to be at a center of excellence facility and you do have to have a psych eval, but @momotrips3 and @Deemarie1221 I would strongly recommend requesting they just send in the prior auth once you have those. At least they will tell you for sure sure what they need for approval. the nurse at my surgeon’s office told me that sometimes policy changes and that new info doesn’t get passed down to all of the customer service representatives but the people who are actually approving or denying should know what they are doing. anyways This is just my experience and hope this helps!
  17. I have UHC Choice Plus and have just chosen my surgeon and started scheduling the various appointments required, thus starting that six month insurance clock. From everything I have researched and been told by the Bariatric Center, BadWolfGirl is correct. I have had the same information and instructions. I must meet monthly for Weight Management Classes where we weigh in and can't gain any weight and try to lose, do a Psych eval, get a cardiac release from my Cardiologist, meet several times with a Nutritionist (I can't remember how many, but may pay for some extras, because I am f-ing serious about this), get some records from my Pulmonologist re: sleep apnea/ my biPap, i am having a lapband removed and revised to RNY, so I may have a couple extra requirements - that is not 100% set, yet. I haven't had to deal with Optum yet. My Bariatric Center has been around for years here in Houston and I have confidence in them. I hope that confidence is not misplaced. It's a good size practice in a large city in the Houston Medical Center, so they had better know! So, I have not been told that I need to document my weight other than the six month period - I could if they just need a number recorded annually from a doctor. I have never had any issues with UHC in the past for other things, so don't anticipate any going forward. The worst that has happened is that UHC has cut ties with a large hospital system in Houston and half of my doctors are employed through that system. Sigh. Both called the other's bluff and unless they come to terms in a couple months, I need some new docs. Surgeon is fully covered, thank God.

I’m happy to hear that it was a smooth operation this time around! Did you go for bypass?

    Low carb diet suggestion

The bottom line is that this is a life long journey with a very short window of "quick" weight loss. And you only have one golden shot at it. Because revisions are not usually as "easy-ish" as the first time. So you do you, Boo. But I think for you to be so categoricaly mis-aligned with your doc/RD that it's going to make your journey difficult and the sad thing is you will likely give up going to your check-ups etc. Which could spell disaster for you long term and regain in your future. So like, why have it at all? Or why have it with them. There are docs/centers who espouse a WFPD for all their surgical patients. Look one of them up and make the transition now. I will also tell you that I DO have a bias. I am pro-low carb and pro-lower healthy fat for the quickest losses and maintenance is done by adding healthy fats rather than adding protein or more fast acting carbs. I would have never gotten to my goal nor been maintaining had I been eating the grains and lots of fruit. I wouldn't. I have too many metabolic strikes against me. And not that it can't be done, but I think the life of a vegan or vegetarian WLS patient is very hard. The ones I know of in real life have either not gotten to goal ever or they have suffered big time regain. But I do know of a couple of women here who are very successful following a WFPD. But, they are also endurance athletes and as such, they're as much outliers as I am... I encourage you to look at other bariatric teams who are more closely aligned with your belief system. Studies show that long term success is directly linked to after care by a team of bari pros.
  20. Bypass solved everything! I’m the healthiest I have ever been, plus I’m no longer on any type of acid controlling meds. I had reflux so bad that not even 280mg of omeprazole a day coupled with tums would relieve it. The obstruction pain was terrible, that was towards the end.
  21. I also had band first and now VSG. The GERD I'm experiencing sometimes feels unbearable. I often feel like I have food coming back up even though it's been over 12 hours since eating. I also don't want to have the bypass. Did it at least solve your stomach pain problems?
  22. Yes. I had gastric bypass.

    Pre op tests

My gastric bypass is 3/11/20. Testing began last October: EKG, Cardiac Stress Test (I’m over 60), Echocardiogram, Gall Bladder Ultrasound, Upper GI, Psych Eval, Bloodwork, 3 Months of Dr. Supervised Diet. Granted, it was a LOT, and sometimes time consuming, but SO reassured to know my surgeon is thorough, and I’m going into this with a clean bill of health. I, too, wondered (feared) I may not pass one of these tests and be rejected, but quickly decided Hey Wait! What a blessing and RARE opportunity to get all of this baseline testing BEFORE a problem became evident! In our medical system, tests are only approved once a problem has manifested itself which can sometimes be too late!😪 Thus, I decided no matter the outcome, I WON either way! I walked forward in Gratitude of all that was being done on my behalf, willing to accept whatever outcome presented and make the BEST decision at each juncture. It all went fine and it also made the past 6 months FLY BY because I was joyfully knocking out one test at a time!😀 Stay positive! Live in Gratitude every day and WATCH the Blessings unfold!

    Pre op tests

I had blood tests, an EKG, a sleep study, and a nuclear stress test (because I was over 50). I had the bypass. If I'd wanted a sleeve, I would have also needed an upper endoscopy (some surgeons require that regardless of surgery). A lot of us also have to take psychological "tests" online...and then meet with a psychologist.

    February Surgery ?

Right! Are you having bypass or vsg? I’m going to Tijuana, because my stupid insurance stopped covering bariatric surgery this year.
