Discouraged

I understand your frustration. Happened to me MANY times on my journey. Though I would NEVER get to where I am today. Looking back, though, the journey was actually fairly quick. Try upping your Protein and liquids. Sometimes a stall is from not enough calories/protein. Without enough protein you body will go into starvation mode and hold onto every calorie. Good luck and may the scale start moving in the right direction again. I may also be that your body is adjusting, you may lose inches and clothing size while you are not losing pounds.
2. Today 4 dresses that didn't fit 3 weeks ago fit me 3 18's and one 16, the 16 I probably shouldn't wear until I lose another 10 but hey it went up over my hips and zipped this time so I'm counting it. That's my brag what's yours?

Heart Palpitations

Hi Jodi I am three months out, I get real bad heart palpitations. Like you my cardiologist has run all sorts of tests. The heart and arteries appear all normal. My dr said prior to my surgery that the palpitations should stop or decrease after I start to lose weight . Unfortunately that has not been the case for me . I have lost 30 kg to date but heart pal show no sign of improvement. I am so depressed and fearful because heart disease runs in the family. Yet my beautiful cardiologist is bending over backwards to help me. I adore the man I just wish the pal will stop.

Locked Up Abroad

Anyone else catch this show? My Tivo recorded it last week for the first time, so I don't know if it's new or what (on National Geographic Channel). First one I saw, they follow the story of how someone (tourists all I've seen so far), agree to do smuggling to make some extra $$ while on a vacation.. get caught, and go to jail. First one was a guy smuggling nearly $2m in gold to Napal, and got caught, and was sentenced to 8 years in Napal's jail. He had an uncle in the royal guard or something, and was able to get him pardoned on the king's birthday after 8 months of jail time. It's really surreal, so this is what I expected. I watched Mexico last night  So we follow the story, they are doing illegal stuff, so shame on them.. but it still makes me think of Broke Down Palace-- though these people brought it on themselves. So near the end, I expect to hear how they were released.. they've been interviewed the whole time, how they thought they were smuggling weed from Costa Rica to Amsterdam (weird concept imo), and the layover in Mexico they got caught.. and it was a crap load of Crack, not weed. So they got 10 years in prison. And they are currently serving it!! So near the end, they are showing us around their cells in prison in Mexico City. They won't be out until 2014. What a crazy thing to happen, it fascinates me. I couldn't imagine being on vacation somewhere, and getting dazzled by the idea of smuggling drugs or gold, etc. through foreign countries. Wow. Anyway, this is one of my new favorite shows, it's so scary!!
5. Hey All, I wanted to ask a question, and see if I get some answers. I am scheduled for a fill tomorrow, but I feel like I really don't need one, I am never hungry and have to remind myself to eat most of the time. I never get sick and have never officially gotten stuck. I am 6 weeks out and down 25 lbs, so I am losing, I guess I can always see what the MD and Dietician say tomorrow, I was just wondering does everyone need fills or is sometime the band enough to put my hunger in check???? Veronica
6. I have fibro, DJD in my lower spine, osteoarthritis, lax joints, plus a laundry list of other issues, and am 4 weeks post-op. I mostly had the surgery as a last resort to get whatever relief I could from those issues. I haven't had much time to see any improvement post-surgery. I've lost 70 pounds total since starting the process toward surgery, though, and I've seen some improvement since then so there mit be something to it. I wish you luck!
7. if your pain is on your left side it should not be your gallbladder. I had what they thought was a leak 2 weeks ago. For three days I had a random stabbing pain on my left side under my ribs and every time I took a deep breath I felt sore inside. When I had my CT scan they did not see a leak but what appeared to be air surrounding my stomach, they think perhaps I had a pinhole that sealed itself. I did not have a fever, nausea or vomiting which would be typical symptoms for a leak. I was admitted and given IV antibiotics in the hospital for 48 hours and they had me go back to the liquid diet for 2 weeks. I feel great now, like nothing ever happened. A lot of people report having that pain under the left ribcage and it turns out to be nothing. Just make sure you follow up with the doctor as soon as you can. And if your symptoms get worse especially if you have a fever, go back to the hospital.

question about burning sensation..

I have the burning sensation too...it is a few inches below my port. I have heard that eventually it will go away. I think it may be some nerve damage, but maybe it will heal itself. I am only 2 weeks po.

How long should you wait after surgery?

i suggest calling your surgeon. i was OK on the treadmill after 2 weeks and strength training after 4, but every surgeon is different.

time off from work - help

I was banded on March 7th (20 days ago) and my port site just stopped having pains - and the occasional, disconcerting, throbbing feeling - yesterday. It didn't actually hurt hurt but I wouldn't have wanted it to get bumped. As recently as yesterday I still had to stand up slowly to not feel like something was pulling at the port site. Nothing today though so hopefully I've turned the corner with the port site stuff. I also didn't lift anything over 10 pounds until day before yesterday. Take at least two weeks - you'll be glad you did.
11. Glad to see it's not just me. I'm working on one thing at a time. So far limiting caffeine & diet coke. I went out to dinner alone last week and decided to try proper chewing. I'm glad I won't be eating alot because I will be at the table forever. It took quite a while to finish a portion of my small steak (granted it wasn't the most tender steak). Afterwards I realized that I drank alot less as well-only one glass of soda. Maybe because I had the food in my mouth so much. When out to dinner i have had up to 6 glasses of diet coke while waiting for food and eating etc. You'd think I would have no room for food. However, I never drink that much at home. I think it's because I'm spending so much more time at the table than I wouuld at home.
12. So I'm 12 days post op...all seems to be healing well I have now noticed last night when lying down that in the area of my largest incision I fell like a weird lump that is about 2 inches long directly under it it's like a bar that's how it feels...does that make sense? Still the only spot I'm really sore and now I'm scared that something's wrong! Like terrified!! Anyone notice this before? Wed will be 2 weeks post op.
13. So we are in Pensacola this week for vacation, which means eating out way more than we would otherwise. I do not order anything to drink when we go out because I am there to eat and can't do both at the same time. Well I am wondering, what kind of reactions do you guys get when you don't order a drink? Last night our waitress asked for our drink order and I politely said nothing for me thank you. She then responded by saying "not even Water? What about tea or lemonade? Or do you want a diet coke?" When I told her again no thank you ill have nothing to drink, she rolled her eyes at me and made a rude face. :/
14. I have always had a problem with overdoing when I exercise. I try to start small and work up gradually but I end up getting worn out and can't do anything for a week or more. This lady tells you how to build up after WLS. She said to increase the time by 10% per week. I hope this works for me. This is an excellent lecture for those new to the band or exercise. It is called "Lecture on Importance of Exercise Immediately After Weight Loss Surgery Weight Loss Surgery http://www.dynamic-progress.com/exercise-video-lecture/ http://www.youtube.c...t=FLFNut9fnDIMQ

Suggestions??? Anyone???

Just be careful, because it wont necessarily loosen on its own. I just went through this... I had my last fill almost 8 months ago, and I always knew it was on the tighter side, but I didnt mind. Over those months, it never loosened up ~ it actually felt tighter in the last month (my dr said it could have been from my traveling on airplanes or from a cold I had... go figure!)... I was so tight that I was getting the acid reflux at night and honestly couldnt eat more than a bite of food at a time and in the past 3 weeks even drinking became difficult. It got to the point where I was having headaches every day and became dehydrated ~ but I had a major fear of having an unfill and going the opposite direction. Well I finally gave in, went to the Dr on Tues and had a small unfill ~ I still have restriction...but I can eat more than a bite and drink again. This whole thing is so individual and seems to be a science, but don't suffer or take any unneeded risks, you will still lose if you are doing what you need too ~ and u will still get your nutrition rather than getting them from pure liquids. Good luck!!

Lose, lose, stall

Thanks for all the feedback. The stall broke today (ish) as I went down 7 ounces. Ha ha. Hoping tomorrow is better. And Ada, I’ve lost 55lbs after surgery and TODAY is my 5 months. So yes, you’re doing great.
17. I eat salad...I think I started getting things like grilled chicken salad out at about 6-8 weeks. I eat some chicken first then some salad...tomatoes and cukes...oh and hard boiled eggs sliced up too...then take it home and had 2 more meals out of it...lol.

First Day With Eggs

The half of the scrambled egg white I attempted to eat yesterday tried to kill me. It was awwwwful. Sorry if this is TMI, but the 2 times I've tried scrambled eggs I get the grosses vomiting experience, it's as if it takes forever to all come up, & I'm practically choking with the mouthfuls of slime that do come up. Im bummed because I loved eggs before-now, not a fan! I got a lil discouraged because next week I get my new (1 month) diet from my dr (yay for crab, chicken, & VEGGIES) but I was thinking, if an EGG kicked my butt how am I gonna even try anything else. Maybe eggs & I will have to do a trial separation for now & attemp a reconciliation much MUCH later down the road.
19. I have had a few rounds of depression since surgery 14 weeks ago. It is getting much better now. If you haven't had many sunny days there in the past few weeks, you may also suffer from seasonal depression. Sunlight helps those with that problem. Its emotional and probably chemical, too..so it isn't something that you can just snap out of. Though you will often read that your attitude is 100% up to you and that you must decide to be happy, that is not so easy when you are in a real funk. Have you thought about starting a blog? There are so many military spouses that would appreciate your perspective and I would bet that there is an unconnected community of them who are spouses at home that have had bariatric surgery. It would be a unique opportunity and it may help for you to write out your feelings and share them. It may help others, too.
20. Normally when I diet I lose well.....I am 6 weeks post op...no fills but eating like I'm filled. I have tops a thousand calories a day and havent lost but 2 pds since my post op appt 4 weeks ago. I'm dieting hard and can't figure out why I'm not losing when without a band I would be!
21. First, please fill out your profile so we can advise you better? How much have you lost since surgery? Many of us, including me, lost very little till our first fill. I lost 12 lbs the two weeks post op and then nothing for 3.5 months. I would also advise you to speak to your nutritionist when you get your fill. tmf
22. Your story sounds like mine back in the early days of my banding. I went back for my 6 week visit and did not need any fill. However a month later I had another visit with the specialist and then had three more over the following months. I now think I have good restriction again and rarely feel hungry. All the best

Stalling so soon?

I'm 3 weeks post op today....I stalled over a week @ 305 and got down to 297 and now I'm stalled again
24. Can I induce any of the physicians who belong to this group to offer an opinion on this? I belong to another board where a number of people are having potentially SERIOUS, recurring problems that may or may not be band related. (I have cut and pasted a series of posts below my message.) These ladies have all consulted their band docs, specialists, etc - without any concrete answers. I experienced something similar about a year ago and my doctor slapped my butt in the hospital, unfilled my band, and put me on a course of IV, then oral antibiotics. His diagnosis was Aspiration Pneumonia. The general professional consensus seems to be that these are not cases of Aspiration Pneumonia, otherwise they would not clear up without treatment. I'm thinking there are just way too many instances of this for it to NOT be band related. Do we have anyone here with a similar experience? Here are the posts... Post #1:ffice:office" /> Several months ago, I wrote a message to you about fever, teeth chattering, vomitting etc. This happens to me on a semi-regular basis -- 3-5 times a year. My PCP sent me to an infectious disease specialist who tested me for every possible inf,. disease. All were negative. I thought it was related to reflux, and you seemed to agree. My hiatal hernia was surgically fixed, yet I still have fever, vomitting etc. My doctors call this my "mystery illness", "fever of unexplained origin" in relation to the band.. My lapband was inserted in Oct '04. To date I have lost only 30 lbs. You can imagine how depressing this is. Have your doctors been any more forthcoming? These fevers (102 degrees and up) mean I am fighting an infection, but no one seems to know what. Any help would be appreciated. Post #2: Rose, I'm not a doctor, so I don't know what to tell you. I do remember you asking me about it because everytime I had reflux I also felt really yucky and fevery the next day. I know for myself it's directly related to the night time reflux. I've always suspected that my body is ensuring I don't get any infection from the stuff I'd aspirated into my lungs. I'm sorry that this is happening to you. I'll let you know if my doctor has any ideas. Post #3: Robin I have these same symptoms. I, too, have nighttime reflux, but thought my symptoms were possibly gall bladder in nature. I wonder how many of us have this!!!! For me, these types of symtpoms are directly related to my nighttime "reflux". I am sure I have aspirated fluids, and I probably don't get "sicker" because there is no food or stomach acid in it - as we discussed in the other reflux post, it's just liquid, and usually mostly saliva. The next day, I feel downright sick for at least 4 or 5 hours. I feel fevery (though I don't always actually have an elevated temp), nauseous and headachy. It does pass as the day wears on - sometimes faster than others. My doctor said it would take an immediate doctor visit, a chest xray at least and probably blood work to see if there was anything incubating in my lungs. He told me if the pattern changes, to let him know, but if Tylenol and a few hours passing addresses it, that's what I should do. Post #4: Thank you for all your responses, I have been on several courses of antibiotics. When the fevers etc. began, I would wake up with flu-like symptoms - so sick I could not get out of bed for 5-6 hours, but I would be fine the next day. Now I begin to feel sick 2-3 hours after I wake up and I am not better for at least 24 hours. I have had two MD visits during an actual episode. Bloodwork confirmed an infection. Chest xrays were clear. I was sent to an infectious disease MD to test for malaria, dengue fever etc (all have recurring fevers as a symptom) and was negative for all. I saw my PCP, gastroenterologist, lapband doctor, even my gynecologist . I guess I need Dr. House now. Post #5: I had the same thing numerous times in the past. I would have fever the next day and felt generally run down and awful. I needed to spend the better half of the day in bed. Good thing I was not working during this period or I would have been fired for so many sick days. As it was I think my friends who did not know I had the band thought I was terminally ill. The problem is stomach contents entering the lungs at nightime. This occurs during sleep when the musculature is completely relaxed. Also our saftey reflex called our " gag reflex" which causes us to cough and the opening to our trachea to close does not work as well when we are sleeping or in the supine position. The lungs are "sterile" unlike the stomach, intestines and esophogus. Whenever anything "unsterile" enters the lungs the body reacts by creating inflamation, fever and white cells come to surround and battle the envader. If our immune response loses this battle it turns into full flegged pneumonia caused by the aspiration of the stomach contents. This problem must be fixed for obvious reasons. Long term I believe you will permanantly damage your lungs with scar and fibrotic tissue. You will be at high risk for esophogeal cancer. ( and possibly lung cancer?) And people have been known to die from aspiration pnemonia, especially if it evolves into somthing called Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), where the lungs go into shock and stop working. If you do survive you will have to endure a long serious illness requiring a stay in the ICU and a respirator. Much to my dismay, my severe reflux was not simply fixed by the repair of my slip and Hialtal Hernia. It occured after incremental unfills. I was simply too tight. Dr. Feilding's last unfill did the trick. However, unfills before the Hiatal Hernia and slip repair were not effective. It was the combination of the surgical repair and the incremental unfills. I have had no problems since ( almost a year) I can eat a full meal and go right to sleep without a problem. I wish everyone who suffers from this gives it full attention, repairs what needs to be repaired and lossen up by all means. Best of luck, ffice:smarttags" /><?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comNancy Post #6: Thank you all. I am hearing my symptoms repeated as you all report yours. I have another gastroenterologist appointment next week and will reiterate what you all have told me about your symptoms. How can so many MD's, including lapband surgeons, and gastroenterologists not have heard of these symptoms? From all your comments, it seems as though reflux is what we are all suffering from. I will also mentiomn these symptoms in a message to Anne (aefpa), in hopes that she can ask Dr. Fielding about these continued fevers etc. I am, clearly not the only lapband patient with this problem. It is ridiculous to think no one (MD's) know what we are experiencing.

Weeping Incisions

I had the exact same thing happen to me! I was sleeved May 15th. I went to my PCP she was not concerned... she said it is not uncommon to develop fluid pockets in abdominal area after surgery. She put me on Bactrim DS for 10 days ( i think to just to pacify me). The drainage from my incision never had an odor, I never ran a fever. My incision drained for about two weeks.
