have any of you wished you did gastric bypass instead
BeachBabe replied to racheyrach's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How in the world can you go from having gastric bypass to having a band? What is left to band? No stomach right? Anyway, My husband who is in the medical device industry told me no on getting the verticle sleeve. He felt that you can always reverse a band but not a sleeve. I am upset that my port tipped without me doing anything outside of a normal way of living and now if I want it fixed I have to pay another $2k. I am not sold that it is even my problem since it has been tipped since the day I could feel my port without being in post op pain. -

Before you decide on a bypass, find a bypass forum (e-mail me and I can direct you to the one I frequented before I found this forum) and read all the posts. If my only choice is to be fat the rest of my life or do the bypass...I'll take fat. I've known too many bypass patients that have had major medical issues after the bypass. Yes, some do well but you never know which one you'll be until it's too late to do anything about it. Also, bypass is no more reliable than band...unless you 'work' it. Read some of the bypass forums and you'll find a rather large (no pun intended) contingent of people who lost most of their weight and then gained it all back. My surgeon said that a bypass patient will lose 2/3 of their excess weight as a result of the surgery, but it's still up to them to learn new eating habits and control their eating. Unfortunately too many people choose bypass because they think they can continue (and do) eating the way they did prior to surgery and end up stretching their pouch and gaining back all their weight. At 20 years old, bypass seems kind of drastic. . -

When we go through the screening process for LapBand, they continually talk about your willingness to do the maintenance and I really couldn't understand this part before now. The reality is, as said before me, there is a lot of maintenance, back and forth until you find that sweet spot. But, considering the risks and the side effects of bypass, this was a no-brainer for me. The mortality rates in bypass were too high to be acceptable for me or for my family. PLUS...I have read that with bypass, the weight loss is faster but then most people have a little bit of a rebound....honestly, my psyche couldn't take that. Get down to 150 and then bounce back to 175.... no thanks. Slow and steady is nice! -

Hello! I new here and going through the process with the bariatric center and now at the decision of lap band or bypass. I first inteaded to do lap band but now am in the middle. Have anyone wished they did gastric bypass instead why? and if not what are you reasons for lap band? I need people that are going through the process cuz right now i can only hear what the doctor and my family are saying:redface: -
I had RNY gastric bypass and the number and quantity of vitamins that I take is several times that of sleeve patients. So I generally take inexpensive vitamins that I buy in bulk as Sam's Club. I take Citracal for my calcium requirements. I take Centrum for my multivitamins. I take Sam's club brand sublingual vitamin B12.

Hi everyone! I have not had the gastric bypass yet. I am still in my first 6 months of learning to eat healthy/dieting. I do have a question. What do you when you get sick? I have always been told drink ginger ale or coke with cracker, or my other got to is bread. It just seems to settle my stomach when I am sick and especially have to take meds. This town I didn’t want a shake, anything felt like it was make it worse, but the ginger ale/coke abs crackers made me feel better. Or just eating plain bread. I just know after the gastric bypass I don’t think those would be an option or most likely not the best option. I just don’t know what else I would do. Thank you in Advance!

My bypass is in 2 days on 9/23, and today I feel like I might be coming down with the virus my kids had last week. Just a mild scratchiness in my throat so far, but I'm worried. Does anyone know if they would cancel surgery if someone has a cold??

Hi, I just had my conversion to bypass from sleeve two days ago and today I had my first vowel movement. Great I thought! Now, rather than passing gas I run to the bathroom just in case it’s not. I’ve had about 3-4 small bouts of loose stools today. Is this normal at all?

Foods that made me gag

I'm just over 16 months out from bypass, and I still can't eat white meat chicken, or any dryer meats like pork chops, or steak, without hurling. The great thing is I still don't miss them. I can eat bacon though, but it can't be crisp. -

I actually had the same issue. I had a distal pancreatectomy. My cyst was on the body of my pancreas. It was found during routine scans. And you can live without a pancreas. I have the head but it doesn't work. So I am a diabetic now. But i'm grateful to be alive. I did as well lost my spleen due to the location. I'm post sleeve going to bypass. -
I plan to have gastric bypass. No surgery date yet. Just got financially approved. Got my TSH for the surgery and it was "off" . Primary Doctor called and wants me to come in tomorrow to discuss it and possibly start a new medication. I've never had a problem with this before and I'm afraid its going to hold up surgery. Has anyone dealt with this preop? Sent from my Z988 using the BariatricPal App

The same thing has happened to me. I was thinking about getting the revision surgery. I'd rather not go under the knife again. I know that you can do the diet from the first month to shrink your stomach again. Im m not sure how effective it is though.

Welcome. I had a sleeve in 2013 and a revision to Modified DS in 2020. I hope your recover is smooth.

i am so tired of explaining to people
nu2ywg replied to joleng5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't tell anyone but my husband and my dad & stepmom because I didn't want anyone scrutinizing me or even paying attention to what I was doing. But seeing as you've told some people already and it's not working out so well you could either drop them from any updates (as in just say you want to be more private about it from now on) and carry on your merry way OR you could give them a crash course on what the band is all about: explain that the reason it's great is that it's NOT bypass so the weightloss is much slower and healthier (ie, 1 to 2 years to lose what you want), how the fills work and how you are not even at a stage where the banding is doing much yet etc etc. I hope you are able to make a choice and deal with this because these friends could really bring you down and you are doing really great. I'd hate to see you affected by that. -

My neighbor behind me, his son in law had Bypass about 6 months ago. He told me about it as he has seen weight loss with me, thinking I had the same thing "NO THANK YOU !" His attitude is why would you put any thing in you, that's just going to cause you problems an choke? I told him why would you have them cut out 20+ feet of your intestines, cut your stomach up, and re route your insides. Only to have to suffer from Dumping Syndrome, and if you stretch yourself, you can gain the weight all over again.... He just walked away ! ! ! I didn't tell him that everyone that I ever knew that had Bypass are in the Ground. So if he wants to watch my progress,,, I guess I can watch his, as time goes by. I hope he makes it. He would be the first. I don't like those kinda odds.. -
You can look up BPD/DS..Right now, I have a gastric stricture. Not one dr has concluded this yet, but extensive research I have done for last week has led me to this conclusion. Newbies in the honeymoon stage hate me. Think I'm being negative...no, being realistic. Do you think my bariatric surgeon told me all of the possible complications - of course not, this is what he does for a living. Luckily, he is a good surgeon so I hope he didn't make my opening too small. Praying for last hour, as it took me, not the three doctors I've seen, to diagnose myself. Even an experienced nurse in a Bariatric Surgeon's office said I was anorexic and needed a good dietician. I am not anorexic! How did I get so fat? And struggle to keep the weight off for 7 years, and suddenly develop anorexia...total nonsense. I am literally getting unable to eat, it nauseates me and I can hardly swallow. My bowels are shutting down.. But I know hospitals can screw up. God, this is overwhelming. So, I'm praying and claiming, I'm right, I'm getting to the right Bariatric Surgeon or right ER doctor, etc. Praying I have no complications from the correction, dilation of the stricture. I may have to have multiple dilations. I may develop a bleed during dilation. Hope you get the drift how complicated this is. Please don't take this the wrong way, but if I asked, May I ask what a DS is, you are not a good candidate for DS. You can fight serious health complications, requiring many hospitalizations, or even death. May not happen, but may. And you cannot be revised from DS, If surgery is available, any responsible surgeon wouldn't do it If you can't lose the weight at this point, get intensive therapy before making such a lifetime commitment. From your pic you don't look that old. This is for the rest of your life!!! Bariatric practices are going to tell you about all of the successes, not the failures. I would be considered a huge success, maintained my weight for 7 years, and now losing....how exciting....wrong...I may be dying. Praying for Divine Intervention. I'm not ready to check out yet.

MADE IT 2 MY GOAL..OH YEAH replied to candibaby0417's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Everyone looses at their own speed so dont try to compare what you have lost to what others have lost. Comparing yourself will only make you depressed, trust me, I have learned that the hard way. We are all impatient to reach our goal weight but you have to remember, we didn't put the weight on over night and its not going to come off overnight and we had the lapband not the bypass so it will take longer to come off. As long as you do as you are suppose to, IT WILL COME OFF RATHER IF IT COMES OFF SLOWLY, THEN SO BE IT. 30lbs since Jan. is really good and nothing to turn your head at. This month I will be 8 months out and I have only lost 60 pounds, I know that is not as much as some people have lost but it's great for me and its 60lbs that WILL NEVER HAUNT MY BODY AGAIN. As for filling foods, try foods that have a high amount of Protein, chicken is good and seems to fill me up faster and I still filled up longer when I eat it also. -
Blue shield of California (medical)
la.pereira replied to fatmommy1808's topic in Insurance & Financing
I have Blue Shield and am wanting to bypass their 3 month "waiting period" recommendation. In which they suggest that you take some time to think about whether you really want the surgery or not. However I have been researching and thinking about it for the last 4 years. So I want to write them a letter addressing that in case they try to deny me because of the waiting period. (Which of course they will try to). Any suggestions? -
I went protein crazy!

My nutritionist explained that they are just fine for sleevers, but not recommended for gastric bypass for this reason. I love them too - sipping one right now in fact. -
Revision Surgery - Band to Sleeve-any tips or success stories
cutlass6521 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good Day I am going to have my gastric band removed and the gastric sleeve done on May 17, 2024 due to complications from the band. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions on recovery, foods, exercise etc for the first few days after the surgery. When I had the band installed i was on a liquid diet, then puree and finally real food. Lots of gas pains in chest and shoulders back then. Now I am on a new journey at the end of the month. Any success stories? -
Revision Surgery - Band to Sleeve-any tips or success stories
cutlass6521 replied to cutlass6521's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good Morning: I am currently on day 9 since my revision surgery. For some really strange reason I am no longer having any issues like I did on day 1. No pain, no stomach spasms, very minimal nausea. I am now craving something with substance. Contacted my surgeon today and he advised that if I am tolerating liquids...move to the next stage-puree. If in a week I tolerate this well...move to soft foods, then the next stage and so on. It almost feels surreal. Every clinics website states two week for every stage. I wonder since I was a band patient previously that my stomach is accustomed to the sleeve diet. I was very fortunate to loose 150lbs total with that gastric band and good food choices. It seems revision patients have it a little different...we know what is going to happen. -
I have a question. After bypass or any WLS are many people noticing a huge amount of excess skin ? If so what are the options and if not what have you done ???
-
Hi Sandy, I'm 32 and I just started my diet to hot my pre op goal weight. They won't let me snack. ????. I've lost 5 lbs in three days so it must be working. I'm undivided between the sleeve and bypass. How are you making your decision?

Is The Lap Band Just Sticking Your Toe In The Water?
Vicki Loichinger replied to 120darby's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was banded seven years ago. And yes that is what it is like, "sticking your toe in the water" I was afraid of doing anything more invasive or "drastic" as I thought at the time. But I should have went the rny route then and saved myself seven years of up and down weight, still all the comorbities I had and all worse now. I don't have any horror story to say about the band, but it just was either too tight, too loose, and between me and it we just didn't do what we should do. I have lost and gained the same 30 to 40 pounds, and now at my heaviest and sickest. I am waiting for insurance approval to revise from the band to rny. Again, I could have been living life and enjoying health benefits if I had just "jumped all the way in" I hope you have that option. -
Ok So My Surgeon Has Me Second Guessing My Choice...
Rainydayz replied to dreamkin's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon said the same thing about the bypass curing diabetes. But since I didn't have it he didn't push me to get a bp, but he said he does recommend it for those who do. Something about the mechanics of rerouting your guts - not just the weight loss, causes the remission. I admit I didn't pay close attention since my mind was made up about the sleeve and I'm not diabetic. I chose the sleeve because I just didn't want to put myself at risk for deficiencies. I'm not the world's best vitamin-taker and you have to take so many with the gb. I'm barely able to keep up with what I take now. But you should probably keep gathering information and talking to more doctors. Good luck whatever your final decision is!
