I know it's not much, but I'm excited to say that I have taken the first step, officially! I spoke to my general family doctor today and asked for a referral to a surgeon. I had already picked out where I wanted to go, based on references from a couple of friends, and research that I had done on my own. But something that I didn't know prior to reading the brochure I was given today, is the surgeon I have chosen, is in a Center of Excellence for Bariatrics! YAY! I was a bit disappointed though, thinking that this would be the first of my 6 month medically supervised diet. Turns out, the bariatric center works closely with a weight management center. So they want all of their patients to go with the weight management center for their diets, and they walk you through the process and all the hoops that the insurance makes you go through. This program though, costs $120, which covers education, materials, and other miscellaneous stuff. Insurance pays for the appointments though. So that's not too bad, but still... ugh. So, I'm on my way! I think I impressed my doctor though. I don't think she was prepared for me to know so much already about the surgery, the options (Lap band VS Bypass), and the lifestyle changes required before and after surgery. Next step is to call the Bariatric Center and get scheduled for a Seminar and follow up appointment! I also got a prescription for Wellbutrin to help me stop smoking. So wish me luck with that! Oh, and I've lost 6 pounds this past month! YAY ME!

I'm a revision, had Lap band, the port flipped, no more constriction I was uncomfortable, had to lift bra to be comfortable, have lost 15 lbs since two weeks before surgery, if you are constipated try a Fleet supository. Having 2nd thoughts now
ncoll replied to chucklecheeks's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had thought about which surgery to have also. My doctor suggested bypass due to better results and since I have heard. He said my heartburn may get worse with the sleeve. I have a father in law that had bypass several years ago and he still has problems with vomiting, diarrhea. I chose the sleeve and haven't had single problem. I am so glad I did this. 53 lbs down since July. Nancy C -
Hair loss & Biotin when did you start taking it?
Mj77803 replied to Alikiinz's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've been doing biotin for 6 months ( post sleeve 17 mo, bypass 2 weeks) honestly it's done nothing. I did the monat shampoo for a year as well- and my hair still fell out at a ridiculous rate. I've since stopped using it. It did grow out pretty fast. Although I'm debating on cutting it all off. -
I had the DS a month and one week ago. I’m still new to all of this but I don’t regret my decision. Like a previous poster said the sleeve part is what controls hunger and it’s the malabsorption part that helps you lose more weight. If you do get the revision you do have to make sure you are taking all your vitamins everyday. With the DS you only absorb 40% of the calories you eat from complex carbs and protein, 20% from fat and 100% of the calories from simple carbs and sugar. So you will have to learn to control your cravings for the sugary simple carbs. Before surgery my surgeon did say that there is the possibility of the surgery working too well and you lose too much weight. He did tell me there are ways to revise the surgery so the part where the food and digestive juices mix is longer and the key is to keep your surgery team aware you are having problems when you begin to have them. I have learned a lot about the surgery from shrinking violetds on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCfDprJMbSy-J3MILnRPT8Yw She is currently maintaining and had the DS.

I'm Having Mixed Feelings About Bariatric Surgery
CowgirlJane replied to nydiva's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a lapband implanted in 2001 and it removed in 2010. I would not recommend it, I don't think it works for most people in the long run. I took at least a year before I was ready to pursue the sleeve. I started down the path of revising to gastric bypass, and one day, it just hit me that I would rather stay obese. It isn't even a logical decision, it is how I feel. When I started getting serious about the sleeve, it triggered alot of fear and anxiety. One reason I picked the lapband was that it was "reversible" and this is not. I think what helped me was doing 2 last major efforts at a diet on my own in 2011. I lost weight on medifast, but discovered that all the soy in those products was really messing iwth my tummy and digestive tract. Of course I regained everything once I went off medifast. Then, I lost like 3 pounds on my last attempt and was very unhappy with the super low carb eating program to boot. It hit me that dieting just wasn't working at all anymore. I encourage you to take your time in thinking through this though. The sleeve doesn't make you instant skinny. It is still alot like dieting, takes planning and focus to eat right and exercise. I have lost nearly 60# since my preop diet start of 11/30 (surgery 12/12/11) but I am still obese. While I am excited about my progress, I wouldn't want to somehow make anyone think that this is easy or even super fast. For me, dieting just wasn't working and so far this is, so i am very happy I did it but I think you really do need to know that it isn't a perfect solution that cures all of your eating/activity level challenges. -
How is United Healthcare (UHC) for getting revision approved?
DTERMINED replied to Poorehouse's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have UHC (coca cola) and even though my plan states I am covered for the band or bypass they found my revision medically necessary and approved it. It was approved in less than one week and I had my revision on aug 21st. -

Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?
traceyc replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
When I went to my surgeon for the first time I had my mind set on bypass and wasn't familiar with the sleeve at all. After she looked at my medical history and saw I had been on anit-inflammatory off and on for a year she suggested the sleeve. There is a high risk for an ulcer at the point where the intestines are reconnected to the stomach with the bypass, the same for DS, if you take certain medications. After I researched I was so glad she suggested the sleeve. I was most worried about the malabsorption with bypass and the sleeve seemed perfect for me. I personally will not be able to do the DS later, but I do like that is an option to do later when you are sleeved. From what I read, most lose enough to be happy with just the sleeve. -
Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?
AmberDawn replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was considering the band until I heard of how many people fail with it and the constant fills/unfills you have to do. Also my Dr said the band is more dangerous if you plan on getting pregnant, it can slip and move from the added pressure during pregnancy. As far as bypass or DS, hell to the no. Never even considered the two. I know 1 person who died from it and another who ended up with tons of complications. -
Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?
RickM replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I never seriously considered the RNY because it doesn't really do anything performancewise that the sleeve doesn't do but has a lot more downsides. If I felt that I needed something stronger (I had about 100lb to lose and had good weight stability), then I would have gone with the DS, as unlike the RNY, its continues malabsorbing calories for the long term while the RNY only continues malabsorbing minerals, so the DS does demonstrate better regain resistance than the RNY or sleeve. My wife is almost seven years out on a DS and is doing well, down over 200lb with good weight stability (which she never had before.) A word on the prospect of using the DS as a backup for the sleeve - by my surgeon's experience, this works best if one makes the decision to revise (or complete the DS, as some would say) early rather than waiting for most or all of ones weight to regain - the results of waiting rarely work out as well as a virgin DS. This makes for a tough decision - after all, who is going to pull the trigger to revise if they have only regained 10lb, and they probably aren't heavy enough yet to get insurance coverage? I felt that my weight was stable enough thru well established my diet/exercise habits that this was worth the risk of just doing the sleeve. Time will tell if that was the right decision. -
Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?
Darla5060 replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! I never considered the bypass or DS. It seems like there are so many more complications with those two surgeries compared to the sleeve. At my pre-op classes, the RN shared that 1 in 200 die from bypass, while 1 in 1000 for the sleeve. I also didn't want to deal with all of the malabsorption issues. -
Question For Pre-Op/post: Ever Thought About Chosing A Different Surgery Like The Ds/bypass?
Rootman replied to Kiki Von Moonshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too never considered a bypass. My brother and sister both ad bypasses. She started having heart issues and stopped exercising, got depressed and gained back a lot of weight - no failure to the bypass but she also has a LOT of malabsorbtion issues and must consume a LOT of Protein a day and a LOT of Vitamins. She's been in the hospital a few times due to this too. My bro did OK, fell to a real nice weight then gained SOME back. he too has constant malabsorbtion issues and must pop vitamins at every meal and drink protein shots a lot. With the DS your digestive tract is COMPLETELY severed ONCE, with the RNY it's severed TWICE. This scared me. I've thrived with the sleeve. I am not down to the weight I want after 14 months but am looking and feeling fine, certainly a LOT better than 14 months ago. I honestly thought that obesity was going to kill me. Do your homework, ask a lot of questions, consult experts and then make up YOUR mind, DON'T let anyone make it for you. We all wish you the best! -
First Steps take - nervous and depressed?
kirajh replied to SciTeach's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You are doing the right thing. There is nothing more than being FAT to make you depressed. Tell me,........I know all about it. I was banded last July and have lost an average of 8-10 lbs per month for a total of 93. The main reason I went lapband instead of bypass was the fact that I didn't want to "do without". Last month, I finally got the restriction I'm sposed to have, but if I hqave a craving for something.......hey, I have it.....just in moderation. Yeah, I could probably have lost more, but I haven't been deprived at all and HEY.................maybe I didn't lose................BUT I DIDN'T GAIN ANY. And still managed to lose 93 pounds. Only about 45 more to go and then I can honestly say........'I'VE LOST HALF OF ME!" GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS ON YOUR CHOICE. -
Poll- Pg when did you get unfilled?
libra replied to jillrn's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats bushbaby....twins!!! Wow, rest up now, you'll need it later. Congrats to you too avasmommy. When's your due date? Mine's been changed to April 2nd. My mother is thrilled because the April birthstone is a diamond for her "grandmother ring" LOL!! I think it's insane for people to judge one another regarding fills during pregnancy. My OB has dealt with several pregnant bypass patients but never a bandster. She said if bypassers can have a healthy pregnancy, she doesn't see the need for me to get a total unfill unless I'm having difficulty eating healthy foods. -
How to decide lap band or gastric?
MollyRN replied to angilu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My understanding was that people were primarily not band candidates if the shrink or surgeon believed that they would not be able to make the lifestyle and dietary adjustments required to be successful. (Also, heavy drinkers are not band candidates either) Honestly, you have to work harder with the band than with bypass and we all have to ask ourselves how much work we are willing to do. Beyond that, look at the stats!!! 1 in 300 gastric bypass patients die. While for the band, it is like 1 in 4000 or more. -
How to decide lap band or gastric?
THEMAXWELLFAMILY replied to angilu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
same here... a lady in my church had bypass, and had a ton of problems after surgery. she lost a ton of blood, blood transfusions, she had to walk with a cane for 2 years, and now she is blind. -
I am happy so far with the sleeve and I am only a month out. I originally was going for the lapband, but, at orientation they touched base on the sleeve and that peeked my interest! I researched it and decided it was right for me! I felt the gastric bypass was too extreme and I already have issues were I lack vit D, Iron etc., so I didnt think that was good for me. But with the band, way too much maintenance and my friend keeps puking with the band. So, the fact that I never got sick with the sleeve makes it the best choice for me and the fact that I dont have any hunger and my friend with the band is always starving! So, I wish I could eat alittle more, but, ,I am happy with my sleeve!

Thank you! I am very excited to be only 5 lbs from my goal. Now my goal is not to gain anything over the weekend. That's my downfall. If I am around people eating bad things, I have no willpower. I am getting better, but it's so hard. I wish the junk food would get stuck and make me sick. My daughter had gastric bypass and if she eats anything that has too much fat in it or any sugar, she gets very sick. I think that would be a big help. I sorta ate junky today. Breakfast Kashi Crunch cereal. It's high in fiber and whole grain. I have to eat 1/2 cup before I work out with my trainer or I get dizzy. I put ground flax seed in it. Lunch- cashews from the dollar store 1/2 an Atkins bar Dinner will be half of a South Beach frozen meal, chicken and broccoli.

Work Requires Dr. Approval to Retun to Work
Mim posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I will be having revision surgery in Oct. With Dr. Aceves. I wasn't working when I got the lapband three years ago, so this wasn't an issue. My co-workers know that I am having surgery, but not the details. I've been told that my surgeon will need to clear me to return to work with a letter. I don't want to reveal what type of surgery I had or explain why I had it in Mexico (I work at a US hospital!) Did any of you have this dilemma and how did you deal with it? Thanks. -
If you could....
LilMissDiva Irene replied to Driver Deb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lap Band: Yes (obvious, as I did go back and do a different surgery). Sleeve: No. I have no desire to revise to any other WLS any further at this point. Depends on how my health is doing in the future. As for now, me and my sleeve are doing quite well together. -
Reasons I chose Sleeve over bypass: Less risks and complications Able to take Nsaids Loss of hunger ( I now have control over what goes in my mouth) No Vitamin deficiencies No DUMPING syndrome Less chance of regain. (some 50 percent of bypass regain all of their weight and then some) Sleeve is effective for the rest of my life, Rny only for 2 years Sure I could eat the wrong things with the sleeve, I choose not to, but even if I ate the wrong thing, let me tell ya there is just no room for much food at all and believe it or not even after only about 3 or 4 bites of a meal I am TOTALLY satisfied as if I just had a huge meal. I really don't know how anyone could eat too much with the sleeve as that one bite too much causes instant discomfort and then the food has to go!

Dont want the Sleeve
Margaret replied to FallenAngel's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have sleeve surgery coming up, and that is because my insurance started covering it. When I attended a seminar on WLS I knew it was the ideal one. Plus, two friends of mine had gastric bypass ONLY because they couldn't have the sleeve at that time. Insurance changed and I lucked out. I would not hesitate to listen to your doctor and keep reading this website. It's helped me so much with so many questions! I also recall my doctor's telling me, "My sleeve patients are my happiest patients." Good luck to you!
