    August Surgery Buddies!

    Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It sounds like you’re prepared and have a wonderful support system. I had a gastric sleeve done 18 months ago but am now getting ready to have a revision (gastric bypass) on August 8th due to severe GERD. I wish I would have just had the bypass instead! Going through the two weeks of liquid diet can be tough but just keep your eyes on the prize! Swanson sipping bone broth is great to have on hand before and after surgery since it has a lot of protein. Remember to sip, sip, sip your water constantly after your surgery and get your bariatric vitamins ready (I take Barimelts.) I’ve rewatched a LOT of YouTube videos in preparation for my surgery; they’re very helpful and motivating. I know you’re going to do well! Be sure to keep us all updated! Best wishes!😁
  3. For a while after my surgery, I over-shopped for groceries because I hadn't yet gotten used to eating so little. Even in my liquid/pureed/soft food stages, I bought way more yogurt, applesauce, etc. than I needed because I wasn't really thinking about how I was only eating half a container at a time. Plus, I was living in a "food desert" without easy access to a grocery store, so I was in the habit of stocking up when I went to the store. Eventually, I got a much better handle on how much food to buy, and I now live somewhere that I can get grocery pickup or delivery, so I order online and I use the same basic list every week (adding or subtracting as needed). I have also gotten really into healthy cooking. I've found tons of great, healthy recipes on Pinterest. Since I live alone and eat fairly small portions, every time I cook a meal, it makes 8-20 servings, and I freeze the leftovers (Souper Cubes are the best thing since sliced bread, BTW). I have had to hold back from cooking because my freezer is already packed with single-serving meals. I have a whole list of other recipes that I really want to try, but not until I use up some of my existing meals! My biggest weakness is Built Bars. They keep releasing new limited-edition flavors, and every time they do, I HAVE to buy a box! I even track my Built Bar inventory on a spreadsheet. I keep telling myself I'm not going to buy any more, but every time I get below 300, they release another new flavor.
  4. I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare.

    Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

    How long it took your doctor to complete your surgery? About 2 hours. I had a routine RNY. How long was your hospital stay? I stayed for 3 days. How was your doctor's bedside manner? My doctor and his PA were great. They answered all my questions. What can I expect when I get to the hospital before surgery? I arrive at 7:15am for a 9:30am surgery. Get there when your surgeon says NOT when the hospital tells you. If I had listened to the hospital I would've missed my surgery completely! The put 2 iv's in me, 1 in each hand, different sizes. Just in case one blew out. I saw my surgeon, anesthesiologist, and the nurse that would be in the operating room. Once I was taken back to pre-op it all happened very quickly. What was your biggest struggle at the hospital and at home? Realizing my limits. This is MAJOR SURGERY! Give your body grace and allow it time to heal. When did you go back to work? A little over 4 weeks post-op If there was one thing that you could have changed, what would it be? Nothing. I'm content with how things have gone so far. What did you pack to take to the hospital? I packed an extra long phone charging cord, toiletries, book, some crosswords, I downloaded some movies to my phone in case the wifi wasn't dependable. I wore loose clothing and crocs to the hospital, wore the hospital gown at the hospital(in case i bled or got sick- better their gown then my clothes), and wore the same clothes to come home. I found that between sleeping, walking(they were pretty clear they wanted me up as fast and as often as I felt capable) and drinking slowly the TV in the room was extra enough. Oh and chapstick! That will really help with any dry mouth! Eye drops will help if your eyes get irritated easily. I think that's everything. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Needing help

    I'm in week 5 and still have no hunger/food cravings. I have an am schedule that involves eating first and lunch/dinner are usually based on how long ago the previous meal was OR if I start feeling icky and realize I lost track of time and haven't had any intake in 4-6 hours depending on my activity. This usually happens with dinner on my days off if I don't cook. I do enjoy looking at the different ways to fix the food I used to eat in healthier ways.     August Surgery Buddies!

    My RNY surgery is scheduled for August 1. I start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow (July 18). I have all my supplies for the next 2 weeks and the first week or so after surgery. Getting that sorted and clearing out a shelf in the kitchen for all that stuff made me feel more prepared and slightly more in control. I’m excited and a little nervous. I’ve been working through the pre-surgery required appointments since last Sept. My surgery is about 2 hours away from home. So my family (spouse and 2 kids - both younger than 8 ) are going up the night before. We have a hotel for them to stay in for a couple of days before I get discharged from the hospital. They have been super supportive which I am grateful for.

    Straws

    Now that I think about it (I'm 5 weeks out) I drank from a straw when my daughter brought me home a baby Smoothie from her job. It was habit, I did it without thinking and had no ill effects.   11. My Psychologist and I have a deal. He is the ONLY one that can change my mental meds. Other doctors are not allowed to change them because even though they are doctors they don't have the training to know better. I 100% agree with the others to contact the doctor that prescribed your mental meds to see about getting back on them. For the past 5 weeks I've been crushing my meds (which is disgusting btw) and putting them in flavored water and chugging them like a shot. Super gross but haven't missed because so much is changing already in my body that I can't risk my head being out of whack too.     Stall out and depressed

    I am experiencing my first stall and heading into week 3 of it. Very frustrating! As a fellow Bipolar I can't emphasize enough how important your meds are especially with the stress of a stall AND moving. Do you have a therapist you can vent this all out to that can help you gain some perspective and air out your fears? I don't know where I would be without mine. I hope this helped! Melly
  14. Hi everyone!😁 I'm Melly. I'm married with a teenager and a preteen. I've had trouble losing weight since my mid 20's, I'm in my 40's now. Just couldn't keep it off. Each time I failed a little more would stay on. I have PCOS, Diabetes, COPD and Asthma among other things but my weight made those worse. Climbing over 300lbs and have no quality of life was my line in the sand. I had my RNY surgery on June 7th (I can't figure out how to put that in my profile). I started my pre-op liquid diet on May 27th. I've lost 50lbs since then and I can't believe my mobility and energy. My goal is 160lbs. I have 100lbs to go. I know it's a journey and that RNY is just a tool but for the first time in a long time I feel like I have a chance. Right now I am in the middle of my first stall. I was really down on myself at first but continue eating correctly,in the past I would've gone for junk to self soothe but won't because I'm afraid of dumping. I finally called my doctors office and they explained that I stalled and it was natural and would happen 3-4 more times over the year. It started on July 3rd. I'm staying the course but it is a little frustrating that it hasn't broken yet. So thats me in a nutshell. I'm excited to get to know everyone and already appreciate the answers this board has given. Thanks! Later! Melly💋
  15. Ok so this is my third week post op and even though my diet plan doesn’t mention anything about crackers I have been eating ritz reduced crackers and my stomach is taking them really well. I am not munching on them but I had about 4-5 crackers today. I don’t know if I should be guilty? Or is eating crackers normal at the soft food stage? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

    I just want to eat 😓

    I do love cooking for others. Ive thought about trying to learn to cook really well, like culinary classes or something so i can cook quality- learn to make good food i make a lot of throw together meals but if i learned to make high quality meals from scratch it would keep me busy and i would be doing something i enjoy. i used to draw, i drew really well but ive lost my technique and just dont have time anymore it seems. I work a very demanding work from home animal rescue job. I work from the time i wake until I go to sleep on call 7 days a week. I also have 3 small children. im only 2.5 months out so early for these kind of urges i think 😩

    Wish you knew before surgery…

    That you will stall and you need to just keep on going. You haven't messed up, you're not doing anything wrong (as long as your following doc's instructions), you haven't failed, this is just your body resetting. People on a regular diet plan losing 1lb a week stall, so imagine how panicked or brain is after 5-10lbs! Your body is just getting everything balanced back out for the new you.

    I really hate stalls!!!!!

    I feel your pain. I've been stalled since July 3rd. I called my doctor's office on July 8th to make sure everything was OK and his nurse called me right back to say yes and explained I was in a stall and they were expected and I'd have more throughout my weightloss journey. I could've cried y'all! I was getting so knotted up thinking once again I failed (where it was supposed to be almost impossible if I follow the plan and i have been strict!) and it was all hopeless only to find out this is normal body stuff. It's resetting itself. I was so relieved. They really should put that in the pre-op literature🤪. I have been guilty of daily weighing but am now weighing on Friday. I had my surgery on June 7th.     2nd Day Post Op

    Yes! The dr said to drink room temp, warm, hot only for the first week because if cold, it causes construction inside. Makes sense. So I went ahead and drank a cold Premier Protein shake and was fine. I am so hungry!!

    June 2022 surgery buddies

    Hey all! I had DJB-S on June 29. Recovery has been a little rough. I can’t stand most protein shakes/drinks since surgery and I’m having some trouble getting my clear liquids in everyday. That means I’ve been in the infusion center a few times for IV fluids, so that I don’t dehydrate. I can tolerate some foods just fine (yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese) and others don’t agree with me at all (tuna and salmon). I’ve not been as active as I think I should be, but I’m pretty weak. I’m hoping this week I will be able to turn a corner. Shoot me some tips and tricks about proteins. I hope you’re all doing well!

    Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first

    As of today, I have officially dropped a full clothing size!!!! The scale isn't moving again (hello stall #2) but I dropped from a size 26/28 to a size 22/24. WHAT??!?! I literally cried. I can't believe I'm sitting here in size 22/24 clothes. Right now. I also went out to dinner with my husband last week and we sat at a booth and my stomach wasn't smooshed against the table. I had space there!!! Again...WHAT?!?!?

    It seems like when I work out more, I stall. So I was trying to just stay with what I had, and I'm still stalled. So now I'm going to ease my work outs and just walk. Hopefully that will help.
