Band to RNY..first steps
iamworthit replied to ColoradoChick's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My doctor requires a month of Optifast pre revision. I start optifast on may 12th and surgery on june 12th. Im praying the revision is a success and they don't just take the band and require me to come back for a third surgery. -
Hello fellow Bypassers. This evening before my VFW Auxiliary Meeting I went to our local Rutter's Convenience Store and got the sugar free French vanilla cappachino. Figured it would be a win win for me since I am now on puréed and at that point I was hungry. I dumped for the first time today and it sucked! Hot flashes, red face, emergency running to bathroom diarrhea (sorry tmi!) and I even vomited! Did anyone else experience this with sugar free products before? Surgeon didn't complete my Gastric Bypass surgery!
numinousvessel posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I went on January 16 for gastric bypass. I woke up about an hour after being put under to a nurse in the recovery area telling me they did not complete my surgery because of complications. I have multiple adhesions and my intestines are stuck together so much that my anatomy does not look like it should. My surgeon did not want to complete the surgery until I could be told. He has given me the option to have him do a sleeve or for him to refer me out to someone who still does open bypass surgery. I cannot explain the mind f**k this was and the anxiety I am feeling. This is terrible. I knew something was going to happen or be found. I knew that I was right. Something was going to be found that would explain the symptoms I had had for years at this point. These adhesions do not show up on scans of any sort unless you have an obstruction. I have only had one other surgery in my abdomen and it was a laparoscopic appendectomy 10 years ago. He thinks it stems from chronic inflammation and autoimmune **** that I have. Has anybody had an open procedure for bypass? What's your experience? Or has anyone been opened up and not finished? I finally got my first fill yesterday during my port revision surgery. He said he just put a little in but hopefully I will begin loosing again. I have gained some back and that is dissappointing after self-pay. They said my port flipped within the first day or two because there was alot of scartissue they had to deal with. Hopefully I am now really on my way!

Kinda in a what in the heck did I do to myself place right now. Any suggestions, tips, words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to meeting new people who are in the same boat.

Phoenix area looking for best doctor? And cost web sits dont show cost! Going to Free meeting Jan 21 Are you happy with discision,? Why not bypass?

I saw my post earlier in this thread and realized that I wrote it before I decided to go with the band instead of bypass. My surgeon does both; he does more bypasses than bands, but he's highly regarded in the banding community. My starting BMI was 50ish. Good luck in your Quest for for the band!

I had revision seven months ago, and feel so happy with it. I just feel normal, long gone are those choking feeling, no gagging, no forced or non forced puking, i can sit down and eat with my family (before i had to stand to eat, and that usually ended up with a rush to the bathroom)). With the band i was always hungry or thinking of food or feeding on sweet stuff that me feel better. Now i eat a small meal and im satisfied. I do not live to eat. I just live. I have lost just about 105 pounds, feel great and best of all get to live the life of an active mum! The only down thing of my weight lose in one of my daughters eyes is now she can't play hide and seek behind me!!! Good luck with the op! It will change your life!

Surgeon didn't complete my Gastric Bypass surgery!
mililani50 replied to numinousvessel's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I just had my bariatric bypass on 2/26/18... I stayed overnight at the hospital... I’m doing well except for the pain where one of my cuts is... When I’m sleeping and take my pain beds I sleep... But when I wake up the pain is almost unbearable. Just took my pain pill now. Take an hour half to work. I know part of it is gas. Has anyone had the same experience....Help!!! -
I had flouro on Friday and my port is totally flipped. They tried to manipulate it but couldn't. So I am having a revision surgery but they don't know when they can schedule because I have to pay the hospital fees and my doctor is going to reimburse me with free care for a few extra years. So I am dissappointed because I am very hungry now, and no longer loosing weight. However, I just want to get this surgery over with so I can get a fill and get back on the wagon.

I have heard this from a few people. I can honestly say that if I could change my primary surgery to sleeve or bypass I would. -
Band to RNY..first steps
Krismarie0605 replied to ColoradoChick's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did the band first because 7 years ago it just seemed right ! I was 22 and all i was worried about was getting skinny so i could wear cute clothes . Never really did no research just heared it was safe and went for it ! Plus everybody had a horror story it seemed back then about rny so i backed off . Then my best friend had rny a year after me and i watched her success and then many friends and family did it and all had major success . After six years and only a 40lb lost i desided to go foward with the revision . I had my lap band removed and rny the same day 1/29/13. Best choice i ever made i have lost 51 lbs and feel great ! To make a very long story short i pick the band for all the wrong reasons but now i got a second chance at success and i love my new life ! -
3 years banded, how often do you need fills??
SueAZ replied to ragdollx19's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've had my band 2 years and still have questions. The group that did my surgery requires followup each year. That's to maintain their status of center of excellence. What I wish they had was a more structured program with more followups not just once a year. There support groups were not very good. They had both bypass and band meet together, with the majority being bypass. That said, I have to call for an appointment and see the doctor. I think if your losing or maintaining if you have made it to goal you don't need to see the drs or have a fill. -
Not following my surgeons recommendations....
c1973d posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
BECAUSE he keeps thinking I had Gastric Bypass and not the Sleeve! My 6 month check up is this week and I'm not even excited for it. Starting weight 276 in January, Surgery weight April 15th 255 and current weight 199.5 (yay!) I've been told by my surgeon I'm not losing as fast as everyone else and to eat 3 meals a day with no snacks. Well too bad because I continue to eat 5 small healthy meals a day and I think I'm doing great so he can shut it! -
Hi Gaintheworld! Sounds like your doing really well. Even tho you feel your loss is slow. Did you have bypass or sleeve? You lost quite a bit prior to surgery. Good for you. I wish you luck! We're all here to cheer you and each other on! I'm always around if you need to talk. How are you feeling?

I've gone from a size 22 to a 16 and am feeling so much better mentally and physically. The first 6 weeks, I was really tired but other than that no pain or complications. Good luck on you're journey!

When your spouse/significant other is still obese...
dhrguru replied to dhrguru's topic in The Lounge
My sister who had VSG has never made it to goal. her starting weight was over 300#, lowest she made it to was about 250ish. She works out hard core, but IMO wasn't eating well and drinks too much alcohol. She is now @ 260 and doesn't like the fact I'm approaching where she is. She is working at eating better. My neice who had lap band lost almost all her excess weight, from over 300 down to 178ish. She has gained back to about 230. She's young and in love for the first time in her life-- love will make you gain every time :-) Though-- her BF just had VSG-- so i think she's determined to not let him get lower than her. My cousin has a band complication now and had to be unfilled-- and she has started to gain. Her insurance won't cover revisions- so she's stuck. I chose RNY because I saw my sister with VSG was still able to eat a lot of crap after her surgery. I knew the malabsorption feature would help *if* I chose to eat crap. And we both loved sweets...I also wanted the 'safeguard' of dumping to keep me away-- but it looks like I tolerate sugars so far. My sister gets heartburn and throws up more than I care for-- I didn't want to live like that. (and for the record-- I thrown up a handful of times in my life-- mostly pregnancy related-- anything beyond that is abnormal in my head.) I never wanted band-- too many complications and too much risk of not maximizing my weight loss considering my high starting BMI. -
Honestly the me now would prefer GBS because I'm lazy, I ultimately made the decision for myself to do the band because it's about making changes, all around no just eating right. It also has to do with my pride, one of my lovely deadly sins. I'd rather go around and tell people I had a band than to say I had gastric bypass. Idk not the prettiest ring to it I suppose.

I found out today that tricare denied the revision request they say it would qualify for revision but the Dr that took the lap band out did not show medical necessity for removal. I have ask his office to review his notes and see if they can correct or add to my reason for removal because it was a necessity... bummed I still have hope a little
-
All surgery poses risks... even Band removal. Having said all that, I cannot think of one death attributed to Band removal in the seven years I've been on Band boards. I would ask your consultant more about why he believed that... and seek out a different surgeon. You may also want to talk about revising to a different operation (vertical sleeve gastrectomy, RNY, or DS). Good luck

Surgeon recommended roux n y, I was thinking sleeve
Nancy E. replied to suekistar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also planned on the sleeve and was redirected to the bypass due to several conditions I have. Took me a bit to get used to the idea but I'm more comfortable day by day and just want to get it done and be on the "other side"! -
Surgeon recommended roux n y, I was thinking sleeve
Angelkeeper4 replied to suekistar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've thought all along that I wanted sleeve but as I've been researching and given the amount of weight I need to lose (200) I'm thinking bypass is the better decision. I have my consult June 16. -
Surgeon recommended roux n y, I was thinking sleeve
HelenaMarie83 replied to suekistar's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
To revise a sleeve into a bypass, at that point it's more of a duodenal switch which is a much more malabsorbtive procedure than the RNY, and from what my surgeon said, is almost never done unless in very special circumstances. I was concerned with absorption too, which is why I initially went with the sleeve, but after deciding to switch to RNY, I found that the sleeve also causes malabsorption and there is no difference in the amount of vitamin supplements you have to take between the sleeve and RNY. They key is to take them they way they're advised, if you do that, you should be fine. -
I never had a sex drive so I cant answer that, but the bypass sent me into menopause so I'm fairly certain this surgery messes with your hormones. Just my experience, I have no proof to back that up but i have read many places that major surgery can start menopause.

Just had my revision surgery!
VSGmary replied to LSF's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Your doing well, dont worry about how much others lose .. My loss was slow in the beginning and i had my doc telling me my loss was slow compared to others however they had been only sleeved.. Not revised to sleeve, so to me he was comparing oranges to apples! From what i have read generally, revised to sleeve patients lose weight slower in the beginning then they catch up, and this is what's happening to me. Just a lil advice take your measurements at least once every couple of weeks, this will show you while weight isnt coming off the scales, that its possibly shifting. Just stay on the path and keep plugging away. It will start to come off Wishing you every success with your weight loss journey xox
