Often revisions are covered when they're because of complications. With the sleeve, quite a few patients develop severe GERD.

I would love to know if insurance covers revisions and what circumstances, if any, this is the case...I have searched my heart out and can’t find any answers in forums-feel I may need an evaluation to consider revision or *something* to address my October 13th ‘19 sleeve with current weight loss(3/24) of only 15lbs post surgery...I am devastated

4 months out and stuck

Of course - any calorie deficit will most likely result in weight loss. I think what the surgeons are referring to is the honeymoon period after surgery, where weight loss will happen the most rapidly, and the most easily. Eventually it does slow down, and for many people, hunger returns. But I've known people on this site, and other places online, who lost 80-90% of their weight in the first year (often faster), but took 2-3 years to get to their goal weight. It's not impossible. But I think it also sets up people to feel like a failure if they DON'T reach their goal, and that's not true either. Many people make it to the overweight BMI and can't go further into the healthy range (or can, but find it harder to maintain). But even then they've lost 80% or more of their excess weight. That's something to be proud of. Even for myself, I'm trying to manage expectations - I'd like to get to a healthy BMI, but I know that weight loss is usually not as dramatic with revision surgery, and that it will probably take me longer to get there (if ever). -

I can't help myself, I find this statement more and more irritating the longer I'm out of WLS, especially that one about "the window of weight loss closing". It puts patients into an unnecessary state of anxiety and builds up equally unnecessary pressure. I wonder if surgeons and dietitians sometimes are being misinterpreted here or - if they're interpreted correctly - if they're aware of the consequences they provoke. My first surgery was 2001. The MGB was almost 4 years ago. After my latest revision 4 weeks ago my weight went down again during the liquid phase (i. e. eating less calories than my body is used to) and I'm in the middle of a normal BMI range. My findings are: if I'm in a calorie deficit (screw the macros) I'm losing weight. I doubt I'm the big exception. However, creating this calorie deficit is definitely harder for some people! (Think age, height, gender etc.). -
Gastric Bypass was the worst decision of my Life!
Marni yrussell replied to muck's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my surgery gas gastric bypass in 2011. Two weeks later I got up to go to work. I had the worst pain in my stomach and I felt like I was light-headed. So I got in the shower and apparently I passed out. My husband heard me pass out in the shower and he picked me up and brought me to the emergency room. I was in so much pain that I couldn't even unfold from holding my stomach. I sat in the ER for about 6 hours. The Physician said that there is nothing wrong with me and tried to release me. I argued with him and said that he was wrong but something was definitely wrong with me. After hours I convinced him to do a CT scan. So I could see if there is anything wrong because I knew that there was something wrong. After the CT scan was conducted in the ER he came to me within minutes and apologized and told me that I had anatomic leak. I was rushed by ambulance to the hospital and the surgeon that did the original surgery. It was so scary I was being ran back to the surgery room and they had to perform surgery to fix the leak. They had told my husband and I had a 10% chance of living or surviving the surgery. When I woke up I had 4 drain tubes in me and I had a feeding tube. I was in so much pain. I was admitted into the hospital for 4 weeks. Then I had to go to the transitional Hospital area and I was in there an additional three weeks. I was unable to go back to work because I was so sick and so weak. Now it is 2020 and I am permanently disabled. Because of the surgery I have neuropathy from my hips to my feet. I also have seizures at least twice a week. I am also anemic. I have horrible pain from my neck all the way down to my feet. I did the surgery to change my life. When I started the surgery I was 350 lb. At the beginning of my weight loss I was down to 114 lbs. Very frail very weak. I was wheelchair-bound for 2 years. Then I graduated to Walker with lots of work. My life was changed forever. I wish I would have never had the surgery. I cannot believe that I became permanently disabled at the age of 41. I do not work. I cannot stand in one place for more than a minute without my legs getting weak and he wanted to pass out. I cannot watch fireworks with my grandkids because I have a seizure. I cannot be around light because it gives me a seizure. I cannot handle stress because I have anxiety attacks now. So anybody that's thinking about doing the surgery better think really hard because you're taking a chance with the rest of your life. My dream is to be normal. My life is changed forever and not for the good. I take 7 pills a day just to walk and cope. -
Converting Sleeve to GB RNY
biginjapan replied to Christina.Rose's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had my revision to bypass three weeks ago but did not have to do any bowel prep. In fact, I was told to eat a carb rich meal for dinner the night before surgery (which I did). Surgery went well and other than gas pain on the first day post-op, haven’t had any problems since. (Ahhh...that’s not true. Now that I’m soft foods constipation has become an issue, but that’s another topic...) -
February 2020 Post-Op Thread
krfecht@mac.com replied to ResaRoo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had bypass the 6th of Feb. have done pretty good and have trouble getting enough protein. Have been getting the vitamins via patches and so much easier than crushing. Also have trouble drinking the water I need so have started sucking on ice cubes. -
true dumping is a lot more common in bypass patients than in sleeve patients, and it's usually caused by eating too much sugar. I've heard of some situations where RNY'ers will dump on fruit, but it's usually things like cake and cookies.

March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
biginjapan replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had bypass a few days before you and I've been on purees (and full liquids) since the day I left the hospital (day 3 post-op). I haven't had any real issues except with Greek yogurt (I guess I'll be a bit lactose intolerant for a while, common with bypass, not so much with sleeve). But I had the sleeve 3 years ago so have already been through this once before, where I had to wait a couple weeks before going on purees. In both cases, waiting, or starting right away, I've been doing well. I've been drinking blended soups, pureed veggies, soft tofu, cottage cheese, etc. Just go slow and start with small amounts at first. Try one new (pureed) food per day. After a few days, try adding another pureed food for a second meal. Your sleeve will let you know what's working and what's not. -

October Surgery Roll Call
mememomma replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wish I had better news. I had sleeve surgery October 6. Shortly thereafter I developed a severe case of meraglia paresthetica, and they put me on all kinds steroids and nerve pain medicine. It completely STOPPED my weight loss for months, and brought on hunger with a vengeance. I have only lost 53 pounds, which has been disheartening. However, it is still 53 pounds gone. Have another 50 to go. ( I am also a revision patient so that can also account for a slower loss. ) My restriction is still there, but like most of us, I have to be careful and resist the urge to "graze". I take one day at a time and hope for the best. My nerve condition will be lifelong but fortunately not nearly as severe and I decided to stop the meds and manage it naturally. . It is wonderful to read how everyone is doing. Congrats to all on your successes. -
I had surgery (bypass) on Mar 5. I have steadily lost .8lb each day. I have written down every calorie and every gram of protein. My question is On Thurs I ate 400 calories and 75g of protein walked for 25min. On Fri I copied everything to a tee from the day before except 1 sugar free popcisle at night and my exercise was doubled but I gained 3.8lbs. Anyone explain the abrupt weight gain? Sat I went down 1.5lb (same) food intake but less exercise only 45min. I know alot of ppl stall at 3wks but this wasnt a stall it was a gain....

Alcohol a year after bypass
mcfluffington replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I find it is not worth the calories for the short lived buzz I get do to gastric bypass. I also here that folks who have had RNY can end up alcoholics trying to chase that lengthy buzz. I just make do with the occasional drink. -
Hello 3 years ago, I have the bypass gastric SW was 265 one year ago my weight was 155 Now I am 175 I want to know any ideas to go back on track I am scared to gain weight again.

either. If it's a stricture, they'll know how to deal with it. Strictures happen to about 5% of bypass patients, so they've both seen them before.

Alcohol a year after bypass

March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
Girlnextdoor00 replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm only 9 day post op, but I prep new foods with hesitation. I was provided a very inclusive binder for weight loss surgery. It includes macros, examples of receipes to use at each stage, and examples of a daily menu to mimick at home to meet nutritional needs. I use it as a guide,to say oh...I can have this and that, eventhough I have no appetite. I downloaded a bariatric cookbook yesterday, it includes options for each stage. Most is for the pureed and general diets, but I picked it because it tells which recipe is okay for which stage. And reviews say that people have been using it years after their procedures to stay on track. There are some a few taboo things in their bypass people can't eat, but sleeve or band people can so you have to know your personal dog's and don'ts. It's called "fresh start bariatric cookbook by sarah kent if you want to check it out. The reviews were mixed, I checked b&n and amazon. I figured it was worth a peek. That's if you are into receipes. I'm usually not, but I knew I would need a little help with this nutrition stuff. -
I’m 3 weeks post op gastric bypass and these past couple of days I have been extremely nauseous. Zofran isnt helping not are those nausea patches they gave me. How did you guys treat nausea post op. Before the operation I’d have ginger ale, and saltines. But obviously those aren’t an option now. i only started the purée food diet a week ago and have actually put myself back on the liquid diet until my appt on the 27th because I keep having complications (inability to tolerate most foods (severe cramping, vomiting and diarrhea). But now with this nausea I’m struggling to even get in a protein drink or my daily liquid intake. Yesterday I had 20 oz liquid. It’s Sunday so my dr isn’t even in the office.

I had a mini gastric bypass on Monday 16th March. Had a rough recovery in hospital after the biggest of my port wounds bled Tuesday night. My surgeon cleaned the blood that pooled under the skin and replaced my staples. I'm horribly bruised and swollen. I'm still struggling to lie down, get comfy or sleep and ny clips are itchy as hell. My question is, how normal is it to want to cry your eyes out after? It's not a pain thing. I am sore and uncomfortable but the crying comes on suddenly and is uncontrollable sometimes. It's been every day since i got home Thursday. I get that I've been through a traumatic experience but anyone else find themselves crying like a baby for no reason?

Ok. Please just try this out! I have the same insurance through my husbands job. They kept telling me 6 month diet requirement. But one day I actually pulled up their policy for it and saw that they had revised their policy at the end of the year 2019 and removed the 6 month requirement. I called them back and spoke to several representatives who said no that’s not true, we require 6 months. Well I had my first consultation with my surgeon dec 23. The nurse told me that sometimes policy gets updated but the representatives on the front end are not always aware of the changes. She suggested sending in the prior authorization at the beginning of the year and just see what they came back with. She sent the prior auth on Jan 2. On Jan 6, they let me know that I was approved. I had no diet followed by a physician. They hadn’t even received my medical records from my primary doctor yet. All they had was my first consultation with the surgeon and my psych eval(which is not bad at all). I had surgery feb 19 (I could’ve had it sooner but my schedule hindered it) So please see if your doctors office would do the same thing. They have changed things under that plan but unfortunately they are still giving out the old information.
