    Any 50yo or older?

Yes, I'm 60 and had my gastric sleeve surgery last week. Currently in the full liquid phase. Looking for support in my area while preparing to return to work in a couple weeks.

I love wall pushups. Been doing them for almost 2 years now almost every single day. I stand about 1 metre away from the wall (which is almost 2/3s of my height - lol!) and do 35 ordinary pushups & 35 with a clap. Should do more but I am ultimately lazy. I have distinct deltoids, triceps & biceps. Don't know how much stronger I actually am but my arms are toned which is what I wanted & not muscle bulk. My 14yr old competitive swimmer niece complemented me on my arms last week & was comparing them to hers. I’ll take that. Though she did point out they’d look better if I had the loose skin removed. Aah 14yrs olds, they give & they take away. 😂

    3 Months Post-Op

Massive congrats on your progress so far! I remember your initial profile pic, and you can so tell you have lost in your face! It's funny as I am the same in that respect - seem to have visibly lost in my face first, and folks I haven't seen for a while (and don't know I've had WLS) ask me if I've done something to my face as its different (good different) haha. I totally agree with the new normal takes some time to get used to. I am at the 2 month mark now and still have to remind myself that I will lose more weight, albeit I have slowed now to about 2-3lbs per week, even with exercise everyday. RE the out of breath part, I was the same - would struggle to walk up an incline for 2 mins without being out of breath and sweaty, now I can do it no problem. Keep up the great work, I am sure the stall will move soon.
  4. As a general rule, the effects of supplementation of any kind on weight loss will be extremely minimal. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say for most people, 90-95% of weight loss is calorie intake alone. Other factors like exercise might make up a few percent, and supplements would be down at the bottom of the list probably only making 1% or less of the impact. Since 1% might mean something like 20 calories a day, you can see how it would be really easy to overcome that effect just by eating a tiny bit more. Keep in mind there is no overcoming basic physics. If you want to lose weight, you have to consume fewer calories than you burn. Things people worry wat too much about in my opinion instead of placing the focus where it matters on calories: Types of diets: Things like keto, low fat, low carb, intermittent fasting, etc. may help with compliance, but otherwise make no appreciable difference in weight loss. Bottom line, eat the way you want as long as you meet your nutrient goals and eat less than you burn in a day. Exercise: Exercise is critical for overall health and fitness, but as a general rule, you are not going to lose much if any weight from exercising. The reason is that your body is really good at stabilizing your overall calories burned in a day/week/month. What I mean is that studies show that for the most part, your body will slow down other processes to "make-up" for the exercise calories you burned, so whether or not you exercised won't actually mean you burn more calories per day. Exercise CAN help in weight loss for some people, but as a general rule, you'd probably need to be doing something that burned more than 400 calories a day, every day for you to see any impact at all. One place where exercise really comes into its own is in weight maintenance post-weight loss. Here the data is super clear. Those that exercise at least 1 hour per day were significantly more likely to maintain their weight loss than those that don't exercise. Supplements: As I pointed out above, at best, supplements might have a very small impact on on weight loss and this impact is really easy to negate by simply eating more. Typically weight loss supplements fall into two categories: Thermogenics (things that increase metabolism), and Appetite Suppressants. Some claim to have both effects. Without going into too much detail, the vast majority of thermogenics work simply because they are stimulants. Caffeine is the most well known and well studied (and frankly probably the most effective), but since you already are a coffee drinker, you're pretty unlikely to get any additional benefit from switching to another source such as green tea. Appetite suppressants are really a mixed bag. These sometimes work for some people, but again, the effects are really small. This is a little old, but I still think worth taking a gander: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8406948/#:~:text=A total of 1945 participants,morbidity%2C costs or patient satisfaction. It's a meta-analysis of the impact of green tea on weight loss. The conclusion they came to after looking at 15 different studies: "Green tea preparations appear to induce a small, statistically non‐significant weight loss in overweight or obese adults. Because the amount of weight loss is small, it is not likely to be clinically important." Best of luck.

    Yoga Supplies and Tips Please

i use a diy spray (1 part distilled white vinegar, 3 parts filtered water and and several drops of tue essential oil du jour...currently it's peppermint)...fill up a spray bottle and bring with me and some disposable "dry" wet wipes. i spray (both sides) of mat when done and wipe down. then once a week i soak it in the bathtub with some dawn dishwashing soap and warm water for an hour and dry (first with a towel and then hang). BUT i use my mat 2-3 times a day every day. 80% of the time doing hot yoga so my mat gets pretty sweat soaked. also...this is the first time ive heard of putting a mat in the washing machine!. i looked up the care instructions for the ones i have and none say i should do that? maybe because mine are on the thicker/heavier side?
  6. Good evening guys! It's been a while since I lost posted on here, and I'm really pleased to say that almost 12 months post-op (celebrating next week on the 28th), I am officially 54kg/118lbs lighter. My dietician and surgeon have given me a goal of between 70-80kgs, I'm currently sitting at 81kg and would like to get to 75kg and maintain for another 6 months or so prior to deciding on plastics, however, that is another story for another day. I've come on here today - a primarily US-based forum - to ask my fellow UK/European bariatric patients about where you've been looking for your plastics. I've been having a look on here, speaking to people I know who've had WLS and/or plastics, Youtube videos, surgery websites, searching for surgeons etc based on their speciality, however, it would be great to learn more about other personal insights. I had my WLS done in the UK on the NHS - which I am ever so grateful for - however, I had a really bad experience and was severely ill in hospital for a month after, so I'll be honest, the thought of going under the knife again gives me some of the worst anxiety. I can't even go into a hospital currently without feeling anxious and a bit uneasy. I'd love to know some positive stories of those that were made to feel really comfortable, consultations that were really well in-depth, surgeons and doctors who made you feel like you were making the best decision. I've looked into UK surgeons - to be honest, I totally understand why people opt to go abroad (although Turkey is out of the question for obvious reasons) - I've been hearing great things about NordsEsthetics in Lithuania, with really good views and standards. I've also considered Germany or possibly the Netherlands, again for quality standards of healthcare and successful surgery rates. I have of course looked into UK-based clinics and hospitals, however the majority don't necessarily have any better review than others I've looked into - particularly surgeons who work abroad, but were trained and worked in the UK prior, although I am still contemplating whether I would go anywhere outside the UK, for the sheer reason that if I were to get ill again, what would happen etc. I am looking at a full 360/FDL tummy tuck with breast enhancement, as I've been left with a lot of excess skin on my upper torso that a traditional tummy tuck wouldn't necessarily remove. Anyway, any and all opinions are welcome, TIA x
  7. I wanted to share my experience of what happened 3 months post op with everyone so that they're aware as well! I had Gastric Bypass on October 15th and everything went amazingly well. Flew thru post-op without a hitch- diet was on track with where it needed to be, and I had even started back at the gym (all with the Dr.'s approval!) I had passed every post operative appointment up to that point. On December 12th (almost 3 months exactly after surgery) I was in the office eating lunch with my co-workers and after just a couple bites of food I felt what seemed to be dumping syndrome coming on but coming on a lotttttt quicker than it had ever before. As I got up from the table to head to the bathroom, the world started spinning and I had to grab onto the wall before I could finish my mad dash to the bathroom. Once I got in there, I never even managed to flip the lights on before I passed out on the floor. From what my coworkers said I was in there for about 30 minutes was their best guess. I don't remember much just that I woke up to find myself throwing up. Once I turned the lights on all I could see was bright red blood all over the floor. I managed to get up and open the door and flag a co-worker down before passing out again. Long story short- my body was going into hemorrhagic shock from an ulcer that had formed on one of the surgical connections which ate through the incision and finally broke through an artery. I was rushed to the hospital via ambulance, and you know something is realllllly wrong when they get you right into the ER and within 20 minutes you've seen a doctor, surgeon, they have a game plan and you're being wheeled into an emergency endoscopy. During the endoscopy they found the ulcerated site and cauterized the bleeding artery and placed 4 to 5 stitures to help close the hole. This whole ordeal landed me in the ICU for several days... not the type of vacation I wanted 2 weeks before the Christmas holiday but alas... I was stuck. I've been placed on 80mg of anti-acids as well as another stomach-coating medication with endoscopies scheduled for 6 months post fix and then yearly from there on out. Looking back there were signs... I should have clued in on. But most importantly listen to your body- if something isn't sitting right go to your doctor. I will forever remember waking up in recovery with the surgeon coming in and looking me dead in the eye and telling me I was one lucky lady to be alive... If I had gone another 30 minutes or so in the condition I was- I wouldn't be here today.

@pinkneymm@aol.com Another AOL account? Great, have you had it for a long time? I’ve always had mine. Anyway I’m on my 2nd week of pre op diet and having a hard time with it because I don’t know why?? I’ve lost a lb a day so far and my esophageal hernia started really acting up and it hurts to swallow anything. But other than that it’s great to already be losing weight. I can even fit into some clothes that I couldn’t before. My surgery is 10/21…really looking forward to it! Yours is not too far away! Yay!!! Best to you!
  9. I agree with this. I'm about 4 weeks post op. According to my plan, I can start soft foods on Monday. But I've struggled with purees and eating too fast so I've gone back to liquids and protein shakes. I'm honestly kind of scared of moving to soft foods and even more scared of moving to solid foods. I think if you're going to use shakes and things to supplement your diet, Meal Replacement shakes are a better alternative to protein shakes as they also have more vitamins. While on my LSD, I would mix the chocolate slimfast with some chocolate protein powder and little skimmed milk to disguise the taste of the slimfast, but also to give it a little more protein. I would not WANT to live on those long term, but occasionally, I think can still have a place in the diet if you're in a rush or not feeling well enough to cook.
  10. My purpose of doing this surgery so late in life (I'm 46) is to be healthier. I have multiple co-morbidities including hypertension, left ventricular hypertrophy, sleep apnea, CKD 2, and hyperlipidemia. There is a family history of stroke and cancer, including colon a stomach cancer. I meet with my surgeon for the second time Tuesday. The staff said the surgeon wanted to meet with me because had questions, but that did't make sense because they've responded to my questions. The only new information was from my EGD pathology report. My EGD found asymptomatic HP negative gastritis. The GI Doc didn't know what may cause it but tossed PPIs at me and I will learned Tuesday if I need another EGD or what. If I have contra-indicators for Sleeve Gastrectomy I'm considering backing out of surgery because that means my only option, anywhere would be RYGB. I'm afraid of having a remnant stomach that could continue down the path of inflammation. Apparently I was on the path to stomach ulcers. Maybe I'm being unreasonable, I'm just afraid of my remnant stomach being a time bomb. I'm also concerned about dumping, not being able to take NSAIDs, and perhaps having to change my other medications. I've committed to having a procedure including buying vitamins, typing protein shakes, losing weight in advance, learning more and more about the procedures, my relationship with food, and continuing to exercise with my personal trainer, and attending support groups. But I have this fear of RYGB and maybe it's silly. I know people, good friends, with RYGB. I get the sense they like the results, but not the down sides. One even told me they are surprised hospitals still perform RYGB because of the issues they had. I don't really know what I'm walking into on Tuesday and I am nervous. I've been taking 80 mg or pantoprazole daily. I learned my insurance company will only pay for 90 pills, so my refill was tricky. I don't know how longer I will have to take it or what that all means, and i don't know what impact all this will have on the surgery (if any). I'm terrified of having come this far, made peace with the decision to have surgery, over come the shame, had to deal with the doubts and fears of other people including my own spouse to find myself with the possibility that it's all a no-go. I won't have surgery until the fall, and normally the second appointment with the surgeon is closer to the the surgery point. Even the program staff weren't sure why it was being scheduled. My RD follow up, last week as also much sooner than it should have been, and after the meeting the RD said it wasn't the actual required follow up. I'm left scratching my head, being coming anxious, and I feel some slight indigestion which is wild since I've been on the PPI since early last month. I doubt my experience is unique so I open to learning from others. I'm currently on Zepbound and losing weight, but it's expensive with insurance and the insurance could decide to not cover even with the insurance and a coupon it's about the amount of a car note every month. So that's not sustainable for the rest of my life. Ia also need to lose more than the 20% max it would get me to. So if surgery is a bust, I I don't know. The gastritis is a contra-indicator for Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty and it's not covered by insurance anyway. Thinking about all of this makes me kinda nauseated.

    Carbonation

I drink it slowly & only have one glass so the bubbles aren’t as great an issue plus the bubbles are smaller & more refined in good champagne. It does mean I can’t open a bottle to drink at home myself. I don’t mind as I’m not drawn as much to alcohol as I once was but I do know what you mean by having a nice supply of bottles. Never know when you have to go somewhere or if someone pops in. I introduced my girlfriends to the joy of real champagne some years ago and now there’s never ordinary sparkling for us anymore. I say quality over quantity now. Don’t know about using a swizzle as part of the joy of champagne is the bubbles. What are your favourites champagnes? My go to is Mumm but I enjoy Veuve in summer don’t mind a Moet or Bolly and have three bottles of Dom in my fridge I’m saving (not sure what for though).
  12. hmmm...maybe because CAMH is high demand/high level cases? 🤷🏻‍♀️ back in 2016 i was able to get an appt with one at Markham-Stouffville hosptial within 1 week of refferal. last year, my daughter was able to get an appt with Mackenzie Health (in Richmond Hill) within a month...and this location is probably the CAMH equivalent in york region (my words, not anyone elses! lol) neither of us would i consider to be one of the "most severe cases of mental health" (but we did each get a referral from our family doc). anyway, maybe check it out...IF YOU WANT TO...i don't want to come off as pressuring you to do something you don't really want to do! whatever you decide to do (or even if you don't do anything at all), hope you find a way to get some peace.
  13. I can answer a couple of your questions. Yes, you will likely need to get your dentures re-fitted. I’m a nurse and have patients who have had large weight losses and they have needed to have this done. Protein shakes will depend highly on your taste. What tastes good to you now may change post op. I wouldn’t buy a large quantity of anything, Rather, just a single serving to try out post op. I personally really like the premier and fair life protein shakes, but others hate them. I took three weeks off work, but could have gone back after two. I really only needed someone there with me for the first couple days then would have been fine on my own. The sooner you get back to gentle activity, even just day to day care of yourself, the quicker you’ll recover.
  14. I'm going to start with my obligatory recommendation to talk to your surgical team. There is a possibility your issues are complications due to surgery, or even other potential medical conditions. It's better to be safe than sorry and talking with a medical professional can help rule out some issues. With that out of the way, I will give you my non-medical opinion just based on what you posted. Again, just based on what you wrote, it is possible that what you're experiencing is related to the volume of exercise and your low calorie intake. While it's not exactly the same, this is similar to something we call RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport). Feel free to Google that to get an idea of what I'm talking about. Both in the case of RED-S, and what you're describing, it sounds to me like your body is telling you that you're overdoing things. I love that you're being more active, but without properly fueling your body, you can actually cause some nasty problems (again, see RED-S). Keep in mind that your body actually only improves physically during recovery, which includes both proper rest and proper nutrition. Dehydration can also exacerbate the problems your having. Plus, while dehydration can always be an issue for anyone, for someone so soon after bariatric surgery it can be really problematic. One of the most common reasons bariatric surgery patients end up back in the hospital is due to dehydration. My advice would be to give yourself a down week from the exercise, which should do a couple of things. One, it will give your body a chance to recover some, which is a good thing. Two, it will help you know if this really is due to the volume of exercise and the incredibly low calorie intake. By the way, a down week, does not need to be a week completely off, Just stepping things down 25% to 35% is enough. For example, instead of walking 5 hours, shoot for 3 or 3.5. Do the same on your swimming. Taking a down week like this around once a month is really common for even pro-level endurance athletes. I promise it's going to help and not hurt you in any way.

it really resonates with me! I actually love setting small targets because it keeps things fun without too much pressure. I tend to expect less deep down, so I'm not as disappointed if things don’t go exactly as planned. For example, this week, I told myself I'd probably lose just 1 kg, and then it turned out to be 2.2 kg! I really believe in choosing our words carefully too—don’t say if you lose the weight; say when you lose the weight! Shifting those small things helps reinforce our mindset, making it feel like reaching the goal is just a matter of time. And great job on finding different programs to keep you excited! It’s fantastic that you’re trying new things, and it sounds like you’re setting up a routine that truly feels sustainable. You’ve got this

IBS - 2yrs out - Irritable Bowel Syndrome

🙋‍♀️ In the last 3 weeks, I've been dealing with crazy weird constipation. But my poop isn't hard, it's really soft. Just won't come out. TONS of gas. Bloated stomach. I was diagnosed with IBS-C about 7 months after my initial surgery (sleeve). I was on the 145mcg dose of Linzess for about a year and a half, and between that and Miralax (and every once in a blue moon, a combo laxative/stool softener) I was very regular. Pooped either every day or every other day for the most part. No bloated stomach. No real gas. Then 3 weeks ago, the constipation just went crazy and got really weird. Gas has been the most insane of my life. Stomach super bloated and uncomfortable. Linzess was increased to 290mcg and has done NOTHING. Miralax was increased. Added more fiber to my diet and even a fiber supplement. Even started taking more laxative/stool softener meds. Added prune juice. And still, I've had a good poop exactly twice in 3 weeks and 3 small poops. That's it. Nothing is working. I drink 100 fl oz daily. I don't drink soda or anything with sugar. I honestly don't know what else to do. Oh, and I added magnesium and tried Colon Broom. Still nothing...

    Surgeon Appointment - YAY!

My questions were: How long are we looking at for the actual surgery time and time in recovery before getting to the actual room? How long is the recovery and what can I expect during it? How long will I be in the hospital and how soon after the surgery will I be up and walking? Should I use a stomach binder the first 2 weeks to help with the pain after the surgery? What is the recommended time for each stage of eating post surgery, how many calories and carbs should I be getting in, and what are my fluid and protein goals at each stage? When will I be getting follow up blood work (I personally had it at 2 months, 6 months, and 1 year post op)? Is there a list of acceptable exercises to do at each stage of healing until I get my final complete clearance, and at what stage will I get that? What pain meds will I be given and how long will I be able/expected to take them? What, specifically, is dumping and what has been known to trigger it and how do we get through it if it happens? What hormonal changes are to be expected as the weight drops off, especially during the first 3 months? Please tell me EVERYTHING you can about stalls, in as much detail as possible. What medications are affected by the malabsorption that comes with bypass (typically it's extended release, but there could be others). That's all I can remember that I asked, but I hope this at least gives you a good start!!!

    14 Days to Go!

I do have to say I kinda agree with you here! Seems like such a strict and long LRD for no reason! @NeonRaven8919 if my maths is right, I weighed more than you pre-surgery, and I was on an 800 cal a day LRD for 2 weeks - it is mad to me what they are asking of you! Though, with that being said, you are smashing it and that is just reflective of your own strength!

    TODDLERS

Hi I'm scheduled to get the Sleeve 5/6/15. I have two-year old twins and wanted to know how quickly you were able to get back to normal after the sleeve. My BMI is right at 40 so I don't have a tremendous amount of weight to lose so I'm hoping I can get back to normal in a couple days, just no lifting. I plan to go back to work in a week. Anyone please, how much downtime did you experience? Thanks, Nerkerle
  20. Hi, everyone. I had a sleeve to mini bypass conversion in 2024. It’s been fine except I often have loose stools and need to run to the toilet. Recently I noticed a weird bulge in my abdomen a couple inches to the left of my belly button. I’m not able to see my doctor, as I’ve just started a job and am doing a three month shift in a remote location. There is no pain and sometimes the bulge is not there. It sort of comes and goes. Has anyone been through something similar? Thank you.

    Going back a step?

I wouldn't worry too much about if you have done any damage - I highly doubt you have! Especially if you have been following the recommendations of your surgical team. It is a little bit of hit and miss learning in the early stages - what feels good, what doesn't etc. If you think a puree is too thick, just thin it out a little bit and then gradually increase! For example, I'd have yogurts but just thin it out with milk. My surgeon literally recommended that I have a week on each stage, so that just goes to show you that the gap can be quite small! So long as you aren't in any severe or prolonged pain, I think you should be okay! Always reach out to your surgical team if you are worried though

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

My win(s) this week... being able to tie my shoelaces by bending down, rather than crossing my legs to reach them walking up the stairs and not feeling out of breath sitting more comfortably & realising I am more flexible without my tummy in the way realising that I FINALLY need to get new clothes...I have put it off for as long as possible 🤣

Report Your WINS ..What is your today's win??🥇

Love your idea of creating this post, just 1 win at a time! So up lifting !!! Wish I saw this the past few weeks. Yesterday I work out for about 3 hours and burned over 1000 calories! Jogging in the early morning and walk to Orange Theory Fitness for my class. After lunch I went to HOTWORX for more work out. Felt so great that I took the day off and was so productive. I’ve been stuck on 201/202 lbs for a few weeks. This morning I am poppy playtime longer in 200!!!! 199.6lbs!!!! Omg I am just screaming and crying. This was my first goal I wanted to hit. I beat myself up often and was so upset I didn’t reach it 3 months ago when I was at the doctor appointment. So I started 273 lbs, on my surgery date in Jan 24 I was 250, took me 8 months to reach 200. My next appointment is in a month and I look forward to show my doctor that I am in ONEDERLAND! (Under 200lbs)
  24. I'm almost a year and a half since my RNY (November). I've lost about 135 give or take (I bounce between 125-130lbs). I haven't lost any fat free body mass since month 3, and have actually gained 5lbs of fat free mass since May. At my 1 year, in May, my body composition said I was at 18.1% body fat which is on the low end of "lean" I did another one last week because I was feeling off (tired, muscle cramps, brittle nails, headaches) My body fat percentage was at 12.3% which translated into roughly 16 pounds of my overall weight (130 at the time of the test) being fat. Anything under 15% is "at risk". I eat, what seems like all day long, I get my calories, protein, healthy fats, fiber. I take all my supplements. All my blood work I've had this year for random things and specifically for post surgery, has been normal. Nothing, other than feeling off, pointed to this. I do have an appointment with nutrition and my bariatric team this week. But wanted to see if anyone has gone through this, heard of this... Anything? My initial thought is how my body is absorbing nutrients, but again, my labs have been normal.

    Spring Rolls: Yum

We also call the rice paper ones Summer Rolls. It’s actually pretty confusing here when you say Spring Rolls because some people assume the ones that popped in your mind and others think of the rice paper ones. But to further confuse you, egg rolls and fried spring rolls are two differnt things here 🤣 I love them too, though. I just tried them for the first time post SADI with chicken, avocado and julienned veggies (I used cucumber, carrots, red pepper and red cabbage but you can just clean out your fridge). The recipe included a super simple peanut sauce that I love. It’s quite salty but I like salt anyways and you don’t use as much of the sauce that was. It calls for 2tbsp soy sauce and one tbsp peanut butter just mixed. I used fresh ground peanuts so it was better for me. My husband didn’t want to try them or I would make the sauce with reduced sodium soy sauce but easier for me because I like it the other way better. Anyways I get about three servings out of that sauce recipe because it is salty so it goes a long way. actually whipped it up to have on some leftover chicken breast last night because I didn’t feel like doing anything fancy. I also learned for anyone who hasn’t made them it’s best to prepare the bowl of fillings but only roll up what you plan to eat. They didn’t do well on the fridge. The next day they stuck to the bottom of the container and broke apart and the second day the wraps got hard and I had to remove them and eat just the filling.
