    Need a good LIE

I'm going with bronchitis. I've had it often in the past, so it's believable. Then, with the timing of the new year and my turning 50 this year, I will explain my weight loss as a result of a dedication to a keto-ish diet (that's actually true) so that I can be "Fab at 50!" Only my husband, two friends who've had the sleeve, and my best friend know the truth. I WILL tell someone I had the sleeve if it seems they're asking for themselves and not to be a nosy gossip. I work at a high school, so I already know that most of the inquiry from co-workers will be nosy gossip. It's easy to discern the nosy from the genuine ask.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Friday, Jan. 3 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 111.9 lbs ---------------------------------------- Lunch was at a new fancy Japanese restaurant that recently opened near our place, and then later we went out to dinner with Mr. & friends. I was really happy to be able to go out and about, after being stuck at home for the past 2.5 weeks (well, except for our annual 3-day xmas-party bender, but those parties were with famlly at various homes...so they don't count, LOL) Got nice and drunk at dinner and ate my fill of both regular and sugar-free desserts. My current low-ish weight sort of made me feel I had carte-blanche to eat whatever, but at the end of the day I didn't even rack up as much cals as I thought I would...may or may not not be a good thing.... ---------------------------------------- 11:00am - coffee-cayenne coffee w/ stevia + green tea 2:00pm - 1 cup seafood soup (broth w/ lobster, scallop, mushrooms, crab, clam) + 1/2 cup truffle edamame + 1/4 fillet tempura cod + 2 tbsp Takowasabi w/ 2 peices of seaweed snack wraps (Takowasabi: chopped raw octopus w/ wasabi sauce) 4:00pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 3.5 oz grilled chicken + 1 Keto Flax ChocLin cookie 7:30pm to 12:00am 1 cranberry martini w/ 2 maraschino cherries 1/2 cup salad greens w/ olive oil 1 bite of baguette bread dipped in oil and balsamic (I logged it as 1 fl oz of bread, LOL) 4 oz steak 2 truffle french fries 1 coffee w/ baileys 1 slice lemon cheesecake 1 lemoncello 1/2 sour apple martini 1/2 lemonade & tequila 1 tequila shot 1 Lindt Lindor Hazelnut Truffle 1:00am - 4 oz steak (I ate the leftovers I planned to take home!) 3:00am: 1/2 cup cottage cheese + blueberries + pumpkin seeds + cashews + almonds 1 sugar free Reese's cup 1 sugar free Russel Stover chocolate mint patty 1 sugar free Russel Stover chocolate coconut snack 1 sugar free Russel Stover caramel pecan snack ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1680 cals - 112g Protein - 99g NET carbs - 63g fat

    Low BMI 2018/2019

I was banded in 2016 at that time I was about 220 pds and started having issues even with air all let out in 12/2018. Insurance had approved to remove band however I did want to wait and make sure that’s what I wanted. Over this past summer is when I decided to have my band removed and switched to the sleeve. My doctor wrote a letter of necessity to my insurance and it was approved. My lowest with band was 165 and at my surgery date on 12/31/2019 I was 183. I’m currently diabetic but off meds as instructed by my doctor. I’ve heard sometimes the surgery doesn’t work for everybody. . I also love wine but I do plan on doing everything by the book and cutting most of the carbs out. I had tried Keto but I think I gained weight instead of losing and I also ended up with my cholesterol a little high. Hope you find something that works for you.

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Thursday, Jan. 2 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / 109 lbs ---------------------------------------- Finally got on the scale properly for first time PO. Down 6 lbs since morning of surgery. And I think it is mostly muscle loss, so not really good news. Though I did have a massive poop last night so there is that. Anyway. On the bright side, we got a belated Xmas gift platter of nuts that we enjoyed while watching "Get Smart" starring Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway last night. That movie is funny 😂 ---------------------------------------- 12:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + cucumber + carrots + 1 oz cheddar + 6 grape tomatoes + 3 oz grilled chicken 5:00pm - 4.5 oz steak + 2 oz grilled chicken + 1 seed cracker w/ peppercorn paté + 5 dark chocolate covered coffee beans + 1 Keto choco-coconut fat bomb. 7:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 6 grape tomatoes + 1 oz almonds + 4 oz grilled chicken + 1 tbsp peppercorn paté 11:30pm - 3/4 cup chocolate peanut butter protein ice cream + 1/2 cup cashews + 1/2 cup almonds + 1 seed cracker w/ peppercorn paté ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1955 cals - 129g Protein - 64g NET carbs - 118g fat

    Diet Doctor - Keto plan

As stated already, keto is very high in fat. The problem there is that fat has 9 calories per gram where carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram. Eat 50 grams of something that's protein and it's only 200 calories - the same amount of mostly fat foods? 450 calories! HUGE difference!!

    november sleeve

You can add my name to the slow down list... I have a feeling I know why, at least for myself. Surgery date: November 27th. (In week 5) Surgery weight: 247 current weight: 216 I was doing very well up until the week of Christmas when my Mom visited. I used her visit and the holiday as an excuse to eat whatever and however I wanted. I was following keto diet when I was on my prep diet and the 3 weeks post up leading up to Christmas and I was doing great! Now that I have reintroduced carbs back into my diet, I have not looked back since. The only thing I am looking back at is the rapid weight loss. Last week less than 4 pounds lost, and as for this week, I am currently +1 pound. I don't officially weigh in for the week until Monday morning, but I guess it is going to take either an actual gain or no weight lost week for me to kick myself in the butt again and get myself back on track. 😐😐😐 I don't know what to say other than its important to be honest with myself during this process, and the only thing that can effect my progress is my actions.

    Diet Doctor - Keto plan

Hahaha... so true! I think I might be like your girlfriends I have previously done Paleo, Keto, generic low carb, and basically I prefer a lower fat model myself, so it's interesting what you say about not being able to eat a lot of fat after WLS, I don't think that would be a huge issue for me, bring it on baby haha. tbh... not sure I would have been able to eat lardo even now... I like my pork belly lean and always cut around the fatty bits lol Hubster not so much he loves pork fat. My bestie has suggested a surgeon who did her lap band about 8 years ago (since removed but was sucessful she lost 50+kg) who is at Greenslopes, I did contact the clinic of your surgeon, still waiting to hear back but they might be on hols... will find out info from both and go with whomever I feel most comfortable with if I do go with someone in Bris. Still debating if I should not just go with the Sydney guy who is very good/empathetic... just the Follow up situation. Frustrating that I have to delay the surgery tbh... but I really can't hit new company with "oh btw..." at this stage and they have given me a lot of other things to come on board.

    Diet Doctor - Keto plan

Lol re aussies drink a lot. Understatement there @DaisyChainOz. It can be odd to be still nursing my first G&T while my girlfriends are on their 3rd bottle of bubbles. I was put on keto by my dietician for three weeks pre my surgery & was successful too. (Yes, it’s easy to do & fits in well with family & lifestyle.) Now, I can tolerate very little fat in my diet. (Cheese is ok & marbled steak but had a thin sliver of lardo on king prawns the other night. Tried one piece & threw it up an hour later - all slimy yuckiness). Strangely, my cholesterol levels immediately pre surgery were in the middle of healthy range as it always has been. But it has been going up over the last 4 months when I eat far, far less fat than I’ve ever done. I believe there is talk around now that you should only follow a keto diet for short periods of time - a couple of months at a time only. A modified version may be different. Talk to your doctor about this. I know you haven’t got a surgeon yet because of your move & the delay to when you can do the surgery but maybe you could start the process. The surgeon I went to refers patients to either a dietician or the Wesley weight loss clinic (all shakes). Ask for the dietician. I believe the Wesley program can get very expensive.
  9. Your post op diet will focus on fluids and protein. Then low carb veggies, then fruit and more starchy veggies. Finally some grain based carbs, which are best left until maintenance. I guess you could say it is a high protein, low carb paln, but not the enormously high fat of the strict keto diet. You will definitely be burning fat, but it will be your own!
  10. The keto diet is very high in fat, and that can be a problem for WLS patients. The poor old liver is already stressed from processing all the body fat breakdown, and adding even more fat can be rough. Fat malabsorption is also a very real issue for some people after surgery and having a lot of extra dietary fat running through the system can have it's own set of issues. I'm not trying to discourage you, but be prepared that your body is going to be in a completely different mode after surgery, and you may not tolerate a lot of fat. Because of the rapid weight loss and caloric restriction, you will automatically be producing lots of ketones. Some folks even end up needing their gall bladders removed after WLS, and I have to wonder if this is related to the poor liver simply not being able to handle the rapid fat breakdown.
  11. Due to a weird set of circumstances I have moved back to my home city (Brisbane, Australia) and am about to start a new job on Monday. As a result my Sleeve surgery is currently on hold until such time as I build up some personal leave from this new company to be able to take 2 weeks off to recover from the surgery. I also have a big final professional exam coming up in the middle of the year so really need to focus on that as well... so no WLS for me until July earliest. In the mean time I am going to go on the Diet Doctor program, I did the 2 week challenge a year or so ago and did lose about 5 kg in the 2 weeks.. that's about 11 pounds, Hubster also likes the food and lifestyle and it works for him as well (he also needs to lose about 30kg/66 pounds) For both of us the biggest issue we have is alcohol (Aussies drink like fish haha) so that needs to be curtailed and we both do really well on Keto or very low carb finding hunger is really not an issue after the first few days and keeping to it is pretty simple as you make 2 x every dinner the other half of which becomes lunch the next day, I also really like this kind of food myself. The program is here if anyone is interested... https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/get-started As I am interstate on induction and training next week we are actually going to start it on the 12 (program starts on a Sunday). Has anyone else been on this program and had success with it? Anyone want to join in starting 12th Jan?
  12. Hello, my husband had Gastric Bypass in mid-November & is currently on mostly soft foods. We are working on trying to cook our meals together for things we can both eat & feed our two kids, as well. I prefer the keto diet for myself to lose the weight I need to lose also, which is not optimal for the bypass diet, at this point I don't think. Has anyone experienced trying to cook meals that everyone can eat or is it easiest just to cook individually based on needs?

    2020 Vets Updates

Calling all vets- share your 2020 status and updates! I am now 5 years post VSG. I had good loss (75+lbs), fell off a bit had some regain, got bad health news, went Keto, lost regain....I am now the same weight as I was at my lowest after surgery. I feel pretty good. I do CrossFit 3-4 times a week. I still identify as a WLS patient, and I always will because it was the first step in my journey of taking control of my health. I am keeping my medical issue at bay. I continue on Keto and would like to lose about 20 pounds in 2020 and will be where I think would be a perfectly ideal weight for me. Hoping everyone is well!

Has anyone kept their surgery a secret?

I’ve only told my husband and 1 close fried who has joined me on ALL of my weightloss attempts .. we did Bernstein, keto and weight watchers together .. we we both successful (short term obviously) as we are both heavier than ever before and out of pocket thousands of dollars. In my opinion, it’s nobody’s business. I know how judgy people can be. I figure, I got my husbands support of my trusted friend and everyone on this forum that I can talk to. Everyone else can just be proud of me! All they need to know is I will have lost the weight by eating less and healthier :). My date hasn’t come yet. I’m scheduled for the sleeve on feb 4 :)

    My new way of living

After much controversy out there on CICO and macronutrients, I spoke to my dr. DISCLAIMER: THIS IS ALL OPINION AND NOT FACTS A little background: I have always struggled with my weight since I was a kid. I started dieting as young as 11 years old. After graduating High School I weighed in the 260's and was really unhappy with myself. I had a terrible relationship with food and would go from starving to overeating. I decided to have the sleeve done. I did the sleeve at age 19 in Aug 16, 2017. At first I did great the weight slipped off quickly, but what i didn't realize is that i was losing weight without eating properly. I didn't really track my foods after 6 months and ate whatever I wanted. A little less than 2 years out I realized that I had some regain and again started with yoyo dieting. Instead of dieting I needed to find a new way of living. One of the main things they will tell you out there is to do something you can stick to long term. Otherwise the weight will come back up. What I have decided together with doc: I will aim for 1200-1400 cals a day, minimum 60g of protien and maximum 100g of healthy wholegrain carbs, we discussed carbs for a long time, basically as long as you eat wholegrain healthy carbs and some fruits without going crazy it should not cause me to gain weight. And since I want this to be a lifelong way of living, I have to do something that I can stick too. Although keto in the past has helped me lose weight quickly, I cant stick to it. I will also be adding 1 cheat day every 2 weeks in which I can have up to 1600 cals and must hit my protien goal first.( this is so that there is no food that I can "never have again") Bottom line - I will try to stick to these guidelines and see what happens. I will post weekly updates on how I'm doing. STATS: 5'2" / 28 months PO sleeve / HW 275 / LW since sleeve 165 / CW 176 Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stop the gain!

I've gained 23 lbs of an over 200 lb loss. Would like to lose 10 lbs as I felt best at that weight. I'm just going back to basics - not all the way back to liquids and purees, but the "protein first - then veggies - then if there's room, a small serving of fruit or healthy carbs (e.g., whole grain thing))". I've also stepped up my exercise - 4-5 days a week. I've always logged my food, so I'll continue to do that. The issue is I've let too many calories and not-the-greatest-food-choices back into my life, and I'd slacked off on exercise the last few months. I don't know how successful I'll be with this, but this is how a lot of other vets have tackled it. other methods I've heard that vets have had success with are Weight Watchers, Intermittent Fasting, and Keto - so any of those could be worth a try, too.

I have used a ton of vegan protein drinks, and they are mostly all fine. I make the shakes in a shaker bottle, with ice. My goal is to drink, and I try not to focus on it too much. The protein shakes include the following (all purchased from Amazon.com): Evolve protein shakes (vanilla and mellow mocha) Vegansmart Plant-based Vegan Protein Powder by Naturade (wild berries) TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Chocolate – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Vanilla – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB Naturade Plant Based Vegansmart Vegan Pea Protein – Chocolate – 20.6 oz Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Creamy Chocolate Fudge - Vegan, Low Net Carbs, Non Dairy, Gluten Free, Lactose Free, No Sugar Added, Soy Free, Kosher, Non-GMO, 2.03 Pound I *did not like* this unflavored protein: Nature's Best Plant Based Vegan Protein Powder by Isopure - Organic Keto Friendly, Low Carb, Gluten Free, 20g Protein, 0g Sugar, Unflavored, 1.15 Pound (20 Servings). It’s a wee bit nasty.
  21. I'm sorry you are going through this! Peri is worse than meno in my opinion!! I lost all my weight after meno, so it is possible to lose with forked over hormones. I don't know the requirments for overstitch, I've just "heard" that they aren't always very successful? Can you tell us more about your diet? How many cals per day and your macros? Maybe give a sample day? I can tell you as a post meno woman on a big time cancer drug that shuts down all hormones, the ONLY way I lost my weight even after surgery was to do low carb lower fat. Any excess fat and I would/could not lose. I can maintain, and I can definitely gain on high fat. So keto as defined by modern terms doesn't work. I've seen it again and again with post meno women as well. Also, no booze. It will stop you dead in your tracks for up to 4 days, especially when you are perimeno and meno. It's like we lose our metabolic flexibility.
  22. Hi, I was sleeved in 2014. My high weight was 311, I got down to 165 and now I am 205. BMI is 32. I started to take progesterone for perimenopause two years ago and I have been gaining since then. My sleeve has stretched out a lot in five years. Does anyone know what the requirements are for surgeons and insurance companies to get overstitch? I can't find anything online, it is so vague. Ideally I would like to be at 175-180. Anything under that and I look gaunt. I have tried the pouch test and keto and monitoring my calories and protein but nothing really helps. I'm afraid the further I get into menopause the worse this is going to get. Thanks in advance.
