Sleeve revision to bypass for GERD and Hiatal Hernia
GG926 replied to jskittles7694's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hello. I will be having the gastric bypass for a large hiatel hernia (also a mass and an ulcer within the hernia sac). I’m very sad and upset because I had bypass 17 years ago and was so sick I had to reverse it. Doc says no choice at all but to do it again or hernia cannot be repaired. -
Hello, just wanted to share my story. It’s quite unique, and I’m hoping I hear some positives because I’m so depressed. 17 years ago I had a gastric bypass. I was 345 lbs and due to terrible back, I decided to do the surgery. The bypass went well, no complications. When it was time to introduce solids, I simply couldn’t. Everything made me dump..soups, eggs, everything including shakes. I stopped eating and ended up having a reversal to save my life. The reversal happened 5 months after bypass. Since then I’ve suffered every single day with gerd. Now I have a hiatel hernia that’s 4 mm with a benign mass and an ulcer. I just saw a surgeon and he said no other option than to do a gastric bypass. It’s that or I could die from the growth of the mass and hernia. I think I’m most scared about food not agreeing with me again. Can those of you out at least 6 months and up to a couple of years share your diets with me?

Hello, Just reaching out...I’m worried because my doctor is recommending a gastric bypass and I don’t want it. I had one 17 years ago and had to reverse it due to malabsorption issues. Now I have a very large hiatel hernia and he says there’s no other option. I can’t believe I’m back here 😢

Revision when your Insurance only covers One surgery per lifetime
Aurelia posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I have a bit of a complex issue. I had the Lapband put in 2009 and had great success. In 2015 I developed an antibiotic resistant port infection and had to have my band removed. I’m trying to get approved for the gastric sleeve but my insurance has denied saying I’m only allowed one surgery per lifetime. Has anyone ever successfully got them to approve it with peer to peer review. Trying to arm myself with as much info as possible. -
A year and a half post op

Even if your portions have got bigger you still need to make the right choices... It's your choice to eat fat or carbs when you should be looking at protein first as protein will fill you up where carbs will spike your sugar and make you even hungrier... I made a promise to myself to be strict from day 1 and for the first 6/7 months I logged everything I ate and counted every calorie and carb I consumed and it's now 8 months 3 weeks since I began my own diet and 6.5 months since surgery with bypass and I've been in maintenance a few weeks now lost 156lbs as of today by being struct not giving in to bad craving... The surgery is only a small part of your success you're also meant to learn better eating habits; healthy eating not going back to junk foods otherwise you'll obviously gain weight..... It's not magic it's simple science eat right make good choices.... Go back to the start and tell yourself to be strict again so not giving into bad cravings..... -
Surgery was yesterday, need encouragement

Mate you've gone to food in the first week that's the number one issue for slow weight loss... Everyone knows the first month's is when you take advantage of the liquid and puree diet to lose the most.. I don't understand people who are in such a rush to easy solid foods.. Not trying to be rude but you've kinda set yourself up for failure eating those kinds of food so early and giving into cravings... I've been through surgery bypass and come out the other side and below my goal weight and feeling great but I did that by being very strict from day 1 maybe I was lucky I didn't have cravings for months nor did I give into anything for months.. I don't know what else to say mate... -
I use shakes mine luckily taste like milk shake and only use water but sometimes I'll add a shot of coffee or Milo for caffeine that I need to get my day started i actually don't do much exercise just ate very little calories for months and lived off shakes for months but I had bypass and weight has come off quickly.

That's unfortunate... But you're one of many who wished they knew about the GERD and chose bypass... I chose bypass as my first ever surgery and it went well and one has no issues and only one stall and I've lost a record 156lb since started my pre surgery diet 8m 3 wks ago Never felt better. -

I too am upset with myself after 8 years being sleeved, I’ve gained back about 55 lbs. However I remember I lost 120 lbs and I’m not putting on anymore. I have suffered w acid reflux from the sleeve and now awaiting approval for a revision. Hang in there....time for us to focus. To remember the why I have a pic of me at my highest weight.

Thoughts on revision?
catwoman7 replied to rulooking4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
it's not that unusual for GERD to start up a couple of years after VSG. And it's also not unusual for people to have revisions a few years after the original surgery. -

From Sleeve to Bypass Revision time

Well I had my sleeve done on 9/20/12; now I’m awaiting approval from United Healthcare Choice Plus for revision surgery. Why? Severe acid reflux which I never had prior to my sleeve. I’ve also gained back about 55 lbs. I know I just can’t continue waking up w acid coming from my nose any longer. Every day is the same. I try to stay away from trigger foods but that doesn’t stop the reflux issues as I can drink water and have problems now. My hubby is more worried about the revision than I am at this point. I just want to be done w the reflux. I’m going for the cardio test while I await the 15-30 day approval process. I haven’t been on here in a long time...I’m back 😉. Now I’m just looking up videos and trying to soak up all the knowledge while I wait. Fingers crossed for a fast approval. -
Thoughts on revision?
NovaLuna replied to rulooking4me's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try cutting your calories down first. Try 800-1000 calories a day and cut your carbs. Also, avoid acidic foods https://www.healthline.com/health/acid-foods-to-avoid first. A revision should be a last resort because even that isn't guaranteed! Sorry you're going through a tough time and I hope things work out for you! -
You will get very many varied responses, particularly as you posted the same thing four times. Doesn't sound like you took your investigatins further when your weight lost stalled. Have you now? Had an endoscope? Not sure what thoughts you are after? But if you want a bypass revision, talk to your doctor and get a referral to a surgeon and discuss your surgery options. But you one step ahead of where you've been for the past few years and its a start.
